Good day for Brock Purdy, rough day for Sam Darnold at 49ers practice.

Purdy: 13-19
Darnold: 1-7
Trey Lance: 3-3

Purdy was very sharp, especially on throws outside the numbers.

- Had Purdy down for 27 reps all with the first team today. There was also an offside penalty in move the ball, so 28 if you prefer. Had him at 13-of-19 with no interceptions and 2 TDs in red zone.

- Solid day for Purdy, who was good in intermediate areas. Hit Deebo, Aiyuk (x2) for sizable gains on crossers and digs as he started 6-of-6.

- Purdy found Deebo and Dwelley for TDs in red zone and led a field goal drive in move the ball period.

He wasn't anywhere near QB1, but he was a useable starter.

His numbers once he took over, were pretty similar to a Kirk Cousins pace, and about 1.5 PPG better than Jimmy G.

I think 15-18 isn't unreasonable for him. I just don't see much ceiling without the 49ers changing who they are as an offense. You could do worse as a QB2 though.

Had Brock Purdy at 30 snaps (all first team, of course), and finishing 16-of-19 with an interception.

INT came on screen pass intended for Juszczyk. Nice play by Drake Jackson who tipped it to himself and picked it. Purdy needed a bit more loft, similar to Lance on Sat.

Aside from the INT, Purdy had one of his best practices of camp, IMO. He and Deebo were cookin', especially on staple in-breaking concepts. They connected 7 times in team drills, many of which would have gone for 15+ yards.

He wasn't anywhere near QB1, but he was a useable starter.

Purdy was actually 1st or close to 1st in every passing efficiency category in his 7 game run. I'm not saying he'll be a top 5 QB......but it would not surprise me to see him in the top 8-10 with the weapons at his disposal as he heads into just his 2nd season, and first as a starter.

So was Trent Dilfer.

It took Hurts 3 years to build his quads up to rush for first downs and for Philly to suck long enough to get high draft picks.

I think people are sleeping on Purdy. Rookie dude put on a show, despite being the #4 QB on the team and getting next to zero reps all year.

I did a $350 FPC tonight and took Richardson as my QB1 (QB12 overall) at 11.01 and Purdy as my "backup" at 16.12 at QB21.

There is reason to believe that the pass protection will be better this year. RG Burford played well as a rookie last year and should be better this year. RT McKivitz isn't nearly the run blocker McGlinchey was, but is reportedly better in pass protection. A key for Purdy's fantasy season may be the health of the starters, because the Niners' backup OL situation is probably one of the worst in the league.

To the larger question about Purdy's fantasy value, it looks like Jimmy G finished ranked in the 17-20 range back in 2021. There's no doubt in my mind that Purdy is a better QB, at least for this offense, and has much better weapons than Jimmy did that year. So I'd say Jimmy's 2021 season is Purdy's floor and he definitely has upside beyond that.

I'm also not 100% convinced this defense will be dominant this year. Bosa's holdout makes the team's pass rush questionable (even if he returns, will he be 100% as effective? injury concerns?), and it remains to see what effect the change in defensive coordinators is going to have (I suspect very little, but who knows). So the team may have to lean on the offense a little more than some people are predicting.

Agree. I'd rather have a RT that is better in pass pro than run blocking, so I won't miss McGlinchey. CMC doesn't need an all pro RT, he's gonna get his no matter what, and McKivitz has supposedly got better as camp went on. Let's hope so.

As for depth, I'm sure they will be scouring the waiver wire after final cuts amd will be able to find decent depth help. Again, let's hope so.

I agree that the OL was really the only weakness last year. Defensively, 49ers stole Hargrave from the Eagles, a top 2 DL in the league. Drake Jaskson has a man's body now. This D is going to be just fine with probowlers on every level.

Yes, Lance was running but the other 3 were all injured due to a sack. And PFF dropped their ranking 11 spots to a below average 18th.

Yes, Lance was running but the other 3 were all injured due to a sack. And PFF dropped their ranking 11 spots to a below average 18th.

When DOESNT Jimmy get hurt when he gets hit? It happened in NE, it happened in SF, and it'll happen in Las Vegas. Not really an OL issue as it is a Garoppolo issue. He's made of glass. He missed almost all of 2020 with a non contact injury for F sake.

Purdys injury had nothing to do with the OL. Riddick didn't bite on a play action and the TE responsible for him on that play didn't get it done. Being hit at an odd angle causing that injury was a freak thing.

As for Josh Johnson, I have no idea what happened because I quit watching before halftime. That one you can have.

True, but not sure this is a negative for an argument about their QBs getting hurt. Running the ball more would probably have their QB hurt less anyways.

Like most things the truth is probably in the middle. They probably aren't the 10 OL that niners fans say, or a bottom 10 OL that eagles fans say. The Purdy injury was a combination of outstanding DL play, and a fluky exact spot he got hit. If I had to put money on it, I'd bet he doesn't suffer any serious injury this year.

I don't disagree, all I said was its fair to question if they can keep a QB healthy in '23. They did lose 4 to injury last year with 3 of them coming on sacks. And PFF has them ranked 18th going into '23 - down from 7th last year - with the biggest question being the right side of their O line.

I still hold the opinion its fair to question their ability to keep QBs healthy.

ETA: and to the bolded, yes running more should result in fewer QB injuries. And yet they still had the number of QB injuries that they did even as one of the teams with the fewest number of passing attempts.
