He’s my #3 “Break Glass If Necessary” QB in a Superflex league. Ugh.
And with Bryce Young as my #2 QB, that emergency might come sooner that I think.

Unconfirmed: WR Olave may have finally come out of his coma when someone whispered to him laying unconscious - "no more Carr hospital balls..."
 
It's probably predictable that if he hit a certain age and struggled with an injury- after his brother's career- that he would choose to retire.

It's probably wise.

I always want players to give better timed notice but it's not how they're made. It's the most difficult decision and their determination and will to get better has always been top notch so to (wisely) accept "the end" is a whole process.
 
Derek Carr has retired from the NFL after 11 seasons.

Wow, to put it mildly. The news was announced by the team itself. Saints insider Nick Underhill reports Carr “tried all his options to get back on the field and ultimately decided against having another surgery and will retire.” He also reports the Saints will “recoup the money from this offseason’s restructure and will get cap relief.” In a statement, the team said Carr was dealing with a “labral tear and also had significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff,” and that surgery would not guarantee a return to full effectiveness. It’s a sad end for a player who spent most of his career overachieving, though perhaps not surprising. Carr, who almost never missed time before last season, had grown increasingly prone to playing through injury. It apparently was no longer sustainable. Carr never won a playoff game but qualified for four Pro Bowls. He was ultimately a high-floor, limited-ceiling player who maximized every ounce of his talent to start over a decade in the league. Carr’s retirement means rookie second-rounder Tyler Shough will now begin the season as Saints starter barring something truly surprising happening in training camp.

Somewhere round 50 mill in dead cap to be spread over this year and next. I imagine the team will wait till June 1 to actually file retirement.

The spin from Garafolo is that he's providing the Saints with 30 mil in cap relief, lol.

No, his shoulder prevented them from kicking the can another year, so they will eat his dead cap this year and next year, instead of next year and 2027. Yeah, he's providing them with cap relief alright, instead of 15% of their cap next year being dead Carr cap, only 10% will!!

I thought I read they get cap relief from the restructure deal.
 
To be exact, the Saints save $7m this year, $25m next year.

Dead cap:

2025 $14.46m
2026 $35.6m

Yes, they converted his 2025 salary to a bonus, adding 20 mil+ or so to future caps. So that is essentially undone, he keeps his 10 mill bonus (nice going away present) and they don't go after pro-rated portion of his original signing bonus.

You'll notice in any of the bits about "cap relief", they don't mention the dead cap left behind.

It's cap relief, but the Saints converted his salary for cap relief!! One is cap relief this year, the other is cap relief in 2027, when they won't be carrying dead cap from his deal
 
The Saints have performed David Copperfield type magic with the cap for years.
Having two relatively cheap young QBs makes this one of the more normal things they've done

Carr is forgoing his $30 million in 2025 game-check salary. That comes off the Saints’ books. What am I missing?

Any retired players salary comes off the books. Not many leave behind 50 mill in dead cap. Saying they were gaining 30 mil in cap relief is not telling the full story. Par for the course with NFL media.

I'm making fun of Garafolo, no one else. This is good news for the Saints, as Carr's shoulder forced them into the correct move. They tried to tie themselves to him for one more year, it may suck this year, but overall, the quicker this happened the better
 
Sad to see. Carr was playing the best football of his career last season, before everyone around him got hurt, which then led to him getting hurt too.
 
He was a decent NFL QB who had a decent NFL career. It's just unfortunate and selfish that when I see his name I immediately get frustrated that he couldn't just feed Olave more. It's the bad part of fantasy football. It's turns us into bad people. Ha ha

To be fair, Olave was only available to start 19 games (technically) and more than a few of those he left early.

Carr targeted Olave about 9 times/game. That's a legit #1 WR pace.

honestly its such a shame he ended up in such a gong show of an organization (Raiders).

in a better organization, he likely would have had a far more productive career. either way, thanks for the Memories Mr. Carr

Not everyone is all about money and feel like they have a certain amount of character to live out. NO is letting him keep the $10 roster bonus. Sounds like both Carr and Saints went out of their way to make this a good separation that helps each other out. Sounds like a damn stand out kind of guy to me. But then again, I am one of those guys that don't have money as one of my top priorities.
