QB Derek Carr, Retired (1 Viewer)

Yeah, I’m not sure but some one that’s knowledgeable on these things said he’d be subject to waivers in here - but it’s not looking like that is the case.
I corrected that above from the NFL operations manual:

From the trading deadline through the end of the regular season, vested veterans are subject to the waiver process.

So why no Saints trade? Do you think he wasn't impressed and doesn't want to go there? Or do you think he was impressed and doesn't want his new team to lose any valuable draft picks.

I think he’ll end up there. I think he’s giving them time to get their cap fixed and he also didn’t want LV to get any compensation for him.

Because he wants a total new contract and teams to bid for him. Seems easy enough.

Derek Carr’s Brother Lays Out Landing Criteria

David Carr said the first must-have for is a top-15 defense. Carr said his brother never had that during his nine seasons with the Raiders. (Hey, whaddya know, the Bucs have one of those!) David Carr said Tom Brady chose the Bucs in large part because of their defense and quarterbacks want to know if they’ll have a defense that can get them the ball back.

No. 2 on David Carr’s list is a good offensive line and the ability to run the ball. The Bucs are returning three studs with Super Bowl rings to their line: Ryan Jensen, Shaq Mason and Tristan Wirfs.

And the Bucs easily could commit to Carr that they will upgrade at left guard or left tackle.

Last on the Carr list is the freedom from his playcaller to change plays at the line of scrimmage, apparently something Derek Carr was unable to do with the Raiders last season.

The Buccs and the Jets fit this mold quite well. in fantasy terms, would love to see him go to one of these two teams, I think he will thrive at either. Not sure he'd be a top fantasy candidate at any of the other teams that have been mentioned as the front runners to land him, like Saints and the Panthers.

Yeah Bucs are a possibility too. Jets/Saints/Wash/TB all had good Ds. Car was improving. Not sure how their O lines rank. Kind of surprised we haven’t heard any offer rumors yet.

The Raiders should have released McDaniels and stuck with Carr, but here we are. It will be interesting to see where he goes and how he does on his new team.
Definitely.

If there is one thing NFL fans have been telling Raider fans for years it is this: You Can Win A Super Bowl With Derek Carr.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, I would have bought myself some an M&M

He had no incentive to accept that trade. Carr desperately wants to win, why saddle his new team with a loss of draft picks when he could simply play Chicken with a 🐔 🙂 owner, get released and sign, with whichever team he wants (and would have him) at that point?

Think I'd rather have Geno. The Bucs just signed their QB Coach/Passing game coordinator, Dave Canales, to be their OC.

Interesting question. Who gets the bigger contract? Carr or Geno?

Good question and I'd personally rather have Geno. My first thought was a to go with Carr since he has benefit of a month head start on FA whereas Geno can only negotiate with Seattle. BUT, since Carr is likely to sign first and we usually see the next wave of players want similar pay I'm going to with Geno.

Without looking I think most would say Carr, but Geno’s 2022 was better than any season Card has ever had.

Geno’s fault he never got another shot after failing with the Jets
He got some starts with the Giants and Seattle before this season. My main point though is I'll trust Carr's consistency from year to year versus what could be one magical career year season - especially when Geno did tail off a little late in the season. If I was an NFL GM, I'd be very very leery of handing Geno a big contract.

Maybe it was Pete Carroll. Should have been coach of the year.
Yeah. Amazing coaching job this year by Carroll. I think Seattle would be a great landing spot for Carr if he’d be happy with a run first offense. But to be in a division with SF and the Rams is a much worse prospect than joining a team in the NFC South.

I’m still not hearing any mention of Carr needing to clear waivers.
I believe waivers applies only to players with less than 4 years experience, which obviously Carr is well beyond.

I believe with a release he’s just a FA at this point.

im little surprised that its been so quiet since his release. He has a few week head start on the FA frenzy...I figured he'd have a tour laid out already. Maybe waiting for the Rodgers domino to fall? Gotta figure next week he starts the courting process.

Reported scheduled visit with the Jets

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports Derek Carr is visiting the Jets over the weekend.

Carr was released by the Raiders earlier this week. In addition to the Jets, the Saints, Panthers, and Titans have all been linked to Carr through different reports. New York would be a strong landing spot for the veteran quarterback. The Jets have a strong cast of weapons on offense and a shutdown defense. Mike White also showed that even below-average quarterback play was enough to make the team a playoff contender. Landing Carr would be a win for the Jets, though they are also rumored to be in the running to trade for Aaron Rodgers.

this couldn't possibly backfire on the jets

The New York Jets are really interested in Derek Carr. Nothing but positive reviews, per sources. Now they wait for Aaron Rodgers to emerge from the darkness and inform the Packers of his plans. The Jets will be speaking to Green Bay about a trade IF the Packers are willing

Panthers coach Frank Reich said the team was "not ready to discuss the specifics" when asked about possibly pursuing Derek Carr.

He also added that it was an "interesting question" while basically deferring to the idea that the Panthers haven't lined up all their free agency ducks yet because they were still assembling a coaching staff. It's likely that the Panthers would have reached out at this point if they'd had real interest, but Carr's tour is expected to take a bit and it's possible the Panthers aren't high enough on his list to where he's prioritizing meeting with them over the Jets and Saints. Ultimately the Panthers cap numbers have us believing it's more likely they'll pursue a rookie quarterback than Carr, but it's certainly not implausible that Carr and the Panthers get on the same page this offseason.

ESPN's Dianna Russini reports Derek Carr is seeking $35 million per year in his next contract.

Though it sounds like a massive number for Carr's services, that would only make him the ninth highest-paid quarterback per year. For reference, he would be tied with Kirk Cousins in annual earnings and sit just ahead of Jared Goff if he gets his desired deal. Carr has already visited the Saints and Jets. The Titans and Panthers have also been linked to him, but no meetings have been reported on. Currently many millions over the salary cap, a $35 million per year deal would be hard for the Saints to accommodate. The Jets, on the other hand, are sitting just above the cap and can easily make some moves to create the room necessary for Carr.

I can't really say I am well-versed on Carr's game. I haven't really seen him play much and have never owned him in fantasy (so had no real reason to pay much attention to him). His PFF scores across his career (2022 listed first): 66.6, 76.3, 84.7, 79.9, 73.2, 68.9, 85.3, 76.0, and 50.3. He had his least productive season since he was a rookie AFTER adding Davante Adams. I get it, the Raiders had a lot of injuries last year . . . but Carr seemed like he struggled. Moving on to a new team at 32, have we already seen the best he has to offer or will a changes of scenery / coaching bring out a new and improved Carr? (I suppose that depends where he ends up.)

I'll take a stab at this...

First three years, very steady and notable progression towards being a top-ten QB: 50, 76, 85. In the third year, 2016, he breaks out as a top-5 QB (that year 12-3 record and MVP candidate), but he breaks his leg pretty badly in game 15, and is really never quite the same player from then on, especially when it came to pressure and scrambling.

2017 his first year back from the leg break, while now seeing pocket ghosts IMO, he breaks bones in his lower back early in the season during a weird Monday night game in Washington, where it was rumored his then all-world OL quit on him b/c he supposedly wasn't supporting their intention to protest the national anthem. These rumors were never quite confirmed, and even formally denied, but the OL stunk that night and really the rest of the year. So did Carr, playing with the broken back bones throughout. That offseason, or perhaps the year after, I forget, that all-world OL was dismantled and subsequently cobbled back together year after year, never yet approaching the level they played at during the 2015/16 ascension years.

After the hugely disappointing 2017 year, the Raiders fired Jack Del Rio and hired Jon Gruden, who came in and promptly alienated Khalil Mack and others, and slowly dismantled the roster in what became a multi-year rebuild filled with multiple draft and FA misses across all portions of the roster. Despite that, Gruden did slowly but surely rebuild Carr - despite his ongoing pocket jitters - as can be seen by the PFF progressions: 73, 80, 85, 76. What happened that last year? Gruden gets fired for calling someone michllen lips and then Henry Ruggs - who despite all the name calling when drafted, was quickly ascending into a major and critical weapon - killed a woman in one of the dumbest and saddest drunken driving moments in NFL history. That season quickly went bust, but somehow Rich Basachia's quiet leadership brought them back from the brink with four wins to end the season and a trip to the postseason - where they lost to the eventual Superbowl Bengals at the goaline at the end of the game.

Along the above timeline, we saw lots of good and bad from Carr. He had/has an amazing arm - can rip every throw and is fairly accurate when his feet are right. He's also shown ice in his veins in crunch time, winning a ton of 4th qtr comeback games. But he also became known to be less than brave earlier in games - taking sacks at the first hint of pressure; throwing the ball away multiple times on 4th down, etc. And on that final play in Cincinnati, he looked rattled and threw it short of the end zone to end the game, leaving a sour final impression of what was an otherwise tremendous, resilient season from him and that team in the face of extreme external hardship and distraction.

Then last year happened. Josh McDaniels came in with yet another new system for Carr to learn. Carr never looked comfortable, often going from focusing too much on Devante Adams to ignoring him completely. Waller was hurt, as was Renfrow. But Jacobs broke out as 2022's best RB. The OL was **** to start the season, and though it steadily improved overall, pass protection remained suspect through the end and by the second half of season, Carr was seeing more pocket ghosts than ever. I am not sure if the blame here belongs more with Carr or McDaniels, but the marriage was broken by season end, obviously.

Carr is now 32. Still young enough to be solid physically, if his genetics and lifestyle permit, for several more seasons. That said, he needs to go to a good team IMO, not the one who offers him the most money. He needs a good/great OL, a solid rushing attack, and an offensively-talented coach who is willing to work with his strengths and hide his weaknesses. If I were his advisor (not his agent, but a trusted friend or family), my list in order of targeted destinations would be:

Niners, Dolphins, Seahawks, Jets, Lions, Giants, Patriots, Panthers, then maybe Titans, Falcons, Bucs, Packers - all others need not apply.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports unrestricted free agent quarterback Derek Carr is heading to the combine, where he is expected to meet with multiple teams as his free agency comes to a head.

Rapoport continued by emphasizing the idea of finding the right fit for the veteran free agent quarterback. Carr and his camp have yet to bring up numbers as they search for his new landing spot, instead focusing on making sure the quarterback lands in an organization with the right structural fit for the future. While no deal appears imminent, Carr has been busy over the first month of his free agency.

Great post.

While most of those teams fit Carr's best conditions, I'm not sure Carr fits theirs. I think the Jets, Falcons and Bucs make sense, but I'm not sure he's an upgrade for anyone else, or at least if he is, its not to the extent where they wouldn't rather see what they have in their current young QB.

Considering this is a deep QB class, and Aaron Rodgers is likely leaving GB, I'm actually a little surprised if there is a big market for Carr. I think it would be in his best interest to be the first domino to fall.

The Associated Press' Steve Reed reports Derek Carr is meeting with the Panthers at the NFL Combine.

Carr is slated to speak with multiple QB-needy teams during the Combine. He's been connected to the Jets and Colts, and with Sam Darnold atop the current Panthers depth chart, Carolina would make sense as a landing spot for Carr. He would represent a marked upgrade for D.J. Moore and the rest of the Panthers' pass catchers.

Panthers coach Frank Reich said Derek Carr is still in his prime and "there's still a good, five-year window" for Carr.

Carr met with the Panthers this week. According to Reich, the interview went well. Though Reich spoke highly of the veteran passer, he also noted that the team has not ruled out any option at quarterback, including trading up in the draft to select a rookie. The Panthers currently hold the No. 9 pick. They only have Matt Corral and Jacob Eason on the roster at quarterback. Getting a fresh start in Carolina, it would make a lot of sense for Reich to handpick a young quarterback to be the team's future, even if that means sending some draft capital to trade up.

The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt writes the Jets "should be viewed as the favorite" to land Derek Carr if Aaron Rodgers winds up back in Green Bay.

It sounds like the Jets are Carr's preferred team of the three serious suitors he's visited with so far and that Rodgers' pending decision is the main hold-up in Carr's process. Rosenblatt writes that the Jets' meeting with Carr "went well" and Robert Saleh compared him to Matthew Stafford. Rosenblatt writes that the Jets have not offered a contract to Carr yet, and that they are willing to wait out Rodgers before turning to Carr.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports Derek Carr "has a slight lean toward the Jets".

Carr going to the Jets appears largely dependent on Aaron Rodgers' future with the Packers. The Jets are viewed as legitimate players in the Rodgers sweepstakes, but can't make a move until they know about his plans for the 2023 season. Carr would immediately improve a Jets offense that ranked 29th in both EPA per dropback (-0.081) and points per game (17.4).
