Excellent post, I'd like to bring up a counter pointIMO there are two clear options to building a SB champion team. 1) have a highly paid awesome qb and hope they carry the team 2). Have awesome weapons and put a rookie contract qb into the mix and hope it goes well (burrow right now).
Mid tier QBs like carr, ryan, cousins, etc get paid a lot without being able to win on their own and it messes up the cap space to build a complete team around them.
The hard part w #1 is knowing who is elite and not paying them beyond their usefulness. Rodgers was elite. He is being paid beyond his usefulness. And guys like Lamar Jackson and d jones it’s hard to say. I think w a younger guys like them you likely take the chance. But w carr you don’t. He’s had his chance.
The hard part w #2 is drafting the right QB. Which is why in that scenario you have to draft 1-2 per year until you hit.
Now sometimes #2 sets up where you can bring in an elite vet rather than a rook to get over the top. Ie mortgaging the future. And that’s been a SB recipe as of late - Stafford in la. Brady in tb. Manning in Den. Problem is w that once you win the SB you are done for a few years cause the cap goes really wonky and the qb walks away or gets injured.
Point is. Carr is not elite. He’s not a rookie. So he gets you nowhere. No way do I sign him. You can draft someone almost as good for way way less.

Washington seems to have some nice pieces on both sides of the ball and Riveria‘s wick is getting shorter. I actually think it would be a great fit for both sides.Derek Carr will have several suitors
He should try and jump over to the NFC, much easier track to make the Playoffs and advance
Personally think Stafford's a lot better, or was anyway as hard to say now with the injuries piling up. Carr's a decent QB but don't see him as a difference maker.IMO there are two clear options to building a SB champion team. 1) have a highly paid awesome qb and hope they carry the team 2). Maybe I’m delusional but I think carr in the right spot isn’t that far behind Stafford. Especially if you don’t have to give up picks. On a team like the Jets, I think he makes them a top 6 team - problem is the top 4 or 5 are also in the AFC.
Saints becomes interesting and I do think he’s an upgrade from Dalton.
Ultimately I’d bet on him going to Washington or NO but I’d like to see him with the jets.
my concern is Jets will likely wait for A-Rod to give his decision which may not coincide with Carr.Jets are a nice fit. QBs on rookie-ish contracts, rookies that are top 5 talents at the position. They can make it work money wise
Good Morning Football @gmfb
Derek Carr to the...
Jets?
Saints?
Buccaneers?
Panthers?
Dolphins
The crew discusses the former Raiders QB and his potential next destination
yes. He is a vested veteran. So once he's released he'll be able to sign with another team and won't have to wait for free agency, correct?
Carr struggles in cold weather, New Orleans or Tennesse makes the most sense for him as a landing spot.

After the trade deadline all veterans go through waivers, so I believe this still has to happen, but the timing is interesting because technically the 2023 season hasn't rolled over yet.yes. He is a vested veteran. So once he's released he'll be able to sign with another team and won't have to wait for free agency, correct?
Interesting, because there's been no talk of teams that will claim him on waivers - just teams that would be interested in signing him once he's released.all veterans go through waivers
Releasing him is a huge blunder period.Interesting, because there's been no talk of teams that will claim him on waivers - just teams that would be interested in signing him once he's released.all veterans go through waivers
Would a team have to pick up his guaranteed $40MM if he's claimed on waivers? If some team does, wouldn't that show releasing him was a huge blunder?
I would tend to believe the Superbowl is the deadline. One article says waiver period for vested veterans ends at the end of the calendar year but it was a few years old, another from last year says it ends with the SuperBowl, no idea if either is correct.
Well of course they did.Raiders released him lmao
Raiders released Derek Carr.
ESPN's Adam Schefter notes that Carr is expected to draw interest from the Saints and Panthers. We've also seen the Jets and Titans linked to him in recent days. Carr will get a head start on free agency and can sign whenever he wants now that he's been released. His new deal won't carry draft pick compensation for the Raiders. We'd expect to see some visits lined up in the next few days. The Saints already visited with him in an attempt to get him to waive his no-trade clause to join the team last week.

The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt writes the Jets "view Carr as a significant upgrade over Zach Wilson."
He adds that the Jets are "hoping" to come away with Carr or Aaron Rodgers this offseason. It seems like Carr is regarded as a fallback plan for the Jets for Rodgers, but this piece from Rosenblatt positions Carr as a clear No. 2 choice for New York. Domino one that would lead the Jets to Carr would be Rodgers re-committing to the Packers, but Carr's free agency will likely put some pressure on the Jets to move sooner rather than later. We'll likely have to wait and see what comes of the Rodgers darkness retreat.

I don't.They also think Seinfeld was way funnier than E.R.
Their options were to cut him or pay him 40M. They already severed the ties when they benched him this year, and told him not to come to the facility. If they made a mistake, that was it outside of signing him originally, of course. At this point, they backed themselves into a corner and really had no option.Raiders are just a mess for cutting this guy into a pool of teams with no qb. Guy should get 9 figures guaranteed by multiple teams within 24 hours
agreed - talk about tipping your hand. Obviously there always is some injury risk but if they played it cool and rolled the dice with him finishing out the year I definitely think they would have gotten something.Their options were to cut him or pay him 40M. There's still a problem though. There are GMs, other front office guys, and coaches who need wins to keep their job. If everyone is given a guaranteed 10 year contract they can do what is theoretically best, but that won't happen. They are going for wins to keep their job.
The worst part about this is Carr's agent absolutely schooled the Raiders. There is no way a 31 year old QB with some actual good skills should get away scot-free without compensation to the Raiders.
I honestly feel bad for the Raiders. One thing I love about the AFC West is there is some honest-to-goodness GREAT rivalries in play. Ones that date back to pre-merger days. I hate to see those fade because of pure incompetence.
And it's a shame that Mark Davis is such a turd. His dad would be sick about how that team is run now.

Benching him didn't matter. They have to get rid of him while everyone is on vacation. Whether he found out he wasn't wanted in December or January, he controlled his own destiny.
Definitely. The Raiders should have released McDaniels and stuck with Carr, but here we are. It will be interesting to see where he goes and how he does on his new team.
I believe waivers applies only to players with less than 4 years experience, which obviously Carr is well beyond.I’m still not hearing any mention of Carr needing to clear waivers.
Yeah, I’m not sure but some one that’s knowledgeable on these things said he’d be subject to waivers in here - but it’s not looking like that is the case.I believe waivers applies only to players with less than 4 years experience, which obviously Carr is well beyond.I’m still not hearing any mention of Carr needing to clear waivers.
Actually in reading a bit more, it seems like Carr may indeed be subject to waivers because the new league year doesn't start until March. I admittedly don't know all the nuances, so I'll let more knowledgeable folks clarify.Yeah, I’m not sure but some one that’s knowledgeable on these things said he’d be subject to waivers in here - but it’s not looking like that is the case.I believe waivers applies only to players with less than 4 years experience, which obviously Carr is well beyond.I’m still not hearing any mention of Carr needing to clear waivers.
Earlier in thread it was brought up, vets are subject to waivers after the trade deadline, but there is some confusion on when that stipulation ends: is it after the Super Bowl or after the regular season ends or at the start of new league year? Super Bowl makes the most sense as that way a playoff team couldn’t sign a cut guy at the last minute. Plus allows teams to release players prior to FA and the start of the new league year. Given the timing of when Carr’s guarantee kicked in, after Super Bowl makes sense there too.Actually in reading a bit more, it seems like Carr may indeed be subject to waivers because the new league year doesn't start until March.
