QB Deshaun Watson, CLE (2 Viewers)

laughing that he's outplaying Burrow, had SEVERAL bad drops by WRs and he's being called trash

Good half in bad weather. A few bad passes, but looking fine out there.

Joe wasn’t looking great either, so there’s that. But we’re watching different games if you call that a good half.

Deshaun Watson completed 16-of-29 passes for 154 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the Browns’ 24-3, Week 1 win over the Bengals.

Watson still looked like the 2022 version of himself for long stretches of this game. He missed a handful of deep shots and his interception came on an off-platform throw that was tipped and caught by a pair of defenders directly in front of him. On the other hand, when he was throwing in rhythm, Watson’s timing with his receivers looked strong. If he can dial in his accuracy on longer throws, the Browns offense could start to click. Watson also rushed five times for 45 yards and a touchdown while adding a two-point conversion on the ground as well. An increase in rushing production would go a long way in masking his inefficiencies as a passer. Watson will sit on the QB1/2 border for his Week 2 matchup with the Steelers.

Deshaun Watson completed 22-of-40 passes for 235 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the Browns’ 26-22, Week 2 loss to the Steelers, adding 22 yards on six carries.

Watson’s night started off with a pick-six on the first offensive play run from scrimmage and didn’t get much better throughout the rest of the game. He also lost two fumbles, one of which was scooped up by T.J. Watt and returned for a touchdown, and was sacked six times while under unrelenting pressure. The performance was truly tragic considering how well the Cleveland defense played, holding the Pittsburgh offense to just one offensive touchdown and two field goals amidst consistent short fields. The Browns appeared destined for their first 2-0 start to a season since 1993 but ultimately fell short. Watson will need to regroup quickly particularly considering the loss of All-World running back Nick Chubb, who suffered a significant knee injury and is likely out for the remainder of the season.

By hook or by crook, the offense Stefanski was running before is going to have to be scrapped in favor of more spread concepts Watson thrived at in Houston. It would help if the line maybe pass-blocked a little better... but it doesn't hide the fact that Watson hasn't come close to resembling even 90% of his old form. This is the point where the rubber will start to meet the road for Deshaun Watson; they don't have the luxury of Nick Chubb running the ball this year and quite possibly ever again.

Player B is Deshaun Watson, Player A is Baker Mayfield.

3 1st round picks, $230 million, and the respect of women everywhere, and Watson might not even be the better QB.

At some point he needs to stop looking like he hasn't played football in a while...Browns gotta be getting a bit nervous...too big of an investment to not get high-end play in return.

Baker already ruined a franchise, got multiple coaches fired for ineptitude and pissed off all a whole receiving group though. At the very least, Deshaun Watson deserves the same shot.

Baker ruined the Browns?! I think they had plenty of issues that predated Baker. Starting to look like maybe he wasn't the problem... And if Browns fans were honest I bet they'd take him back in a heart beat right now, especially if they could get out of DW's contract and get their picks back.

He was bad, and handed a winnable game away. No pocket awareness, and some of those throws 5 yards out of bounds were head scratchers.
He made a few good throws. But many of the longer throws were way off the mark and poor decisions. And he loves the sideline, maybe he's worried about INTs. There wasn't a lot of separation. This has vibes of Russell in Denver in 2022, with a coach and QB mismatch.

Of course they would. Baker, allllll those draft picks and 230M in cap space is infinitely more valuable than Watson. Cleveland made a franchise-crippling mistake.

Sucks for the fans, particularly since they have to root for such a piece of garbage on top of it.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reports Deshaun Watson’s “two blatant face mask fouls and his shove of an official” will be “evaluated and assessed” by the NFL.

Watson had a pair of face mask penalties late in the Browns’ Week 2 loss to the Steelers and made (aggressive) contact with a ref after getting into it with Steelers players on the sideline. Completely out of sorts and terrible for a second straight week, Watson’s 2023 could not have gotten off to a worse start. The outside chance that Watson could serve a suspension for his Monday night histrionics would put rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson under center for the Browns. The mobile Thompson-Robinson would be a priority waiver add in superflex leagues and some one-QB formats.

Ben Simmons of the NFL? It's starting to feel that way.

I find it shocking a guy that good could be so un-special.

Really not impressed with that offense they were rolling out, I tuned in for 2nd half. They ran the ball up the gut on every 1st down I was paying attention.

If Stefanski is forced to open it up, maybe Watson can improve.

It really is quite the dilemma. If he had a one year contract, I’m very confident we would see Dorian Robinson-Thompson start some games this year. But that contract is so crippling it gives Watson a lot of job security and really has a chance to set this franchise back for years to come.

From Kevin Cole's (former PFF data scientist) substack.

"Deshaun Watson’s 25 expected points lost to turnovers and sacks is a jaw-dropping number. That number is in the bottom 1st percentile since 2018, and he also lost an additional 5.3 expected points on non-fumble designed runs and scrambles, including two 15-yard penalties for grabbing an opponent’s facemask. Watson generated some value through the air, but was inaccurate generally (-7.5% CPOE) and hasn’t shown any signs of breaking out of his post-suspension slump. I’m not closing the book on Watson returning to the elite form we saw from 2017-2020, but if he continues to play this way, the Browns combination of trade value and contract given away to acquire Watson will go down as one of the worst personnel moves in NFL history."

And there is no way to reverse ship, they are going to be stuck with Watson for the duration which I assume is going to be the next 4-5 seasons.
Only thing they could do is possibly draft a QB in the 2nd Rd or later and see if he develops behind Watson and then you could maybe turn the page.

He looked terrible, 15/29 for 160 yds, that's what you get in primetime from a guy you paid all that money and draft picks for?
-We're done with word association or whatever the nonsense off field, this is purely QB analysis and right now he is terrible.
The Browns offense played poorly, especially the passing game in Week 1 but folks didn't talk about it because they won 24-3 over the Bengals. But they struggled.

Never understood the trade and the contract. Who exactly was Cleveland bidding against on both? Franchise killer
Atlanta was very in on trading 3 1sts for Watson, they just weren't going to do that contract.
Broncos vs. Browns: The Drive...to ruin your franchise with a terrible expensive QB decision.
Truthfully Wilson looks better, and cost quite a bit less.

I feel 100% confident the Browns would be 2-0 with Mayfield starting, hell, they'd be 2-0 with Brissett starting. DTR, maybe?

Deshaun Watson is 100% of the reason they lost to the Steelers.

Also, he can run for 70 and throw for 300 next week, and turn the whole story around.
He doesn't look like the same guy I saw when he was in Houston.
Yeah I know. I also know it's been two weeks and he's had two years off. He had bad weeks in Houston.
He played last year and that should have been his games to knock the rust off. I don't think that excuse can continue to be used now.

Miami, Atlanta and Carolina were all in the running at one point or another and I believe all had similar trade offers.

The only way the Browns could get to the top of that list was with the over the top financial offer. Without that money Watson was not choosing the Browns, no matter what he has said since.

The Browns were convinced that Baker was not the answer at QB (I agreed) and that Watson would be the answer(looking really bad at the moment!) and were willing to give up the draft capital to satisfy the Texans and the money to satisfy Watson.

They problem is he HAS to do this all the time to justify what they gave up for him.
Agreed.

I was only saying that one week can change perspective.

Every post on every guy who is disappointing or killing it right now assumes everything will continue on, exactly the same.

If a player has two quiet weeks in weeks 11/12, it's not as big a deal, to everyone, as weeks 1/2.

This is how buy low happens, right?

100%. Week 1 in the rain and a tough defense last night. He could turn it around.

If he doesn't turn it around, give DTR a chance. He looked great in the preseason.

How long do you wait? That contract has to play.

From NFL on Deshaun Watson:

Officials are called upon to maintain order on the field, and sometimes while performing those duties, there is inadvertent contact between players and officials. In this instance, in their judgment, the contact did not rise to the level of a foul.
So no suspension or other discipline expected for #Browns QB Deshaun Watson related his contact with an official. Watson could be fined for two facemask penalties. But he’ll be able to play Week 3 vs. the #Titans.
