QB Deshaun Watson, CLE (2 Viewers)

So in my mind, there are 4 main factors that determine which team gets Deshaun, once his legal problems are resolved:

  • Deshaun has to want to go there (he has a no trade clause)
  • The team has to want to trade for Deshaun
  • The team has to have the cap space to take on his contract
  • The team has to have enough draft capital to give up to get Deshaun
Based on that, I have a hard time seeing him not end up with the Dolphins:

  • Deshaun wants to play in Miami (it may be his number one choice)
  • The Dolphins by already trying to trade for him, have indicated they are interested
  • The Dolphins have the most cap space in the league
  • The Dolphins have picks in every round this year including 2 in the 4th and 2 in the 6th, and they have 2 1st round picks in 2023
Tua gave no indication in 2022 that he will be a true franchise quarterback, So I think the Dolphins will be ready to trade for him whenever his legal issues get resolved. In addition, if his legal issues aren't resolved by the 2022 draft (which I don't think they will be), I think the fact that they will still have 2 1st round picks available in 2023 is huge for acquiring Deshaun.

 
So let's say Deshaun is traded to the Dolphins.  How do you envision his numbers comparing to Tua's (with basically the same roster)?

I think it would be a huge upgrade. Hell, assuming Watson is the player he was, Watson may actually be better than ever in Miami. His weapons(especially if they retain Fuller) would arguably be the best of his career. He always overcame poor OL's, so that would be nothing new, and being free from Bill O'Brien even if Miami's play calling is also questionable, could be a positive as well. 

So basically, I think Watson could be a top-5 fantasy QB in Miami.

I agree and would be under the assumption the trade only happens if there is no suspension based on legal outcomes.  A suspension would most likely stop the trade itself anyway.

He'd likely be better from a pure QB perspective, but Miami's defense is better than what he's had in HOU the last few years, so potentially lower yardage. 

Miami has a nice compliment of weapons for him, even if Fuller goes elsewhere in FA. 

Atlanta might also be a great fit for him, assuming Ridley remains with the team (and returns to the NFL)

Almost no way they retain Fuller. They would try to get a cheaper guy like Jakobi Myers or Guyton to complement Waddle and Parker.

They would prioritize a free agency upgrade on the oline and a RB in day 2 of the draft.

I'd say, it's highly unlikely they keep Fuller. However, I could see them keeping him if he has a colder market due to basically missing this season, or if they do trade for Watson, and he makes it a big deal to keep Fuller.

 
Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson reports now-fired coach Brian Flores was a driving force in the Dolphins' interest in Deshaun Watson.

Robinson is not suggesting that interest led to the surprising firing on Monday, but it would seem to remove one of the most likely landing spots for the embattled quarterback. According to Robinson, the tandem of Flores and GM Chris Grier was one of the reasons Watson was willing to waive his no-trade clause. With half of that duo gone and Flores no longer pushing for the move, it is possible Miami looks elsewhere. Yet to be suspended or have any real developments in his situation, Watson will again be one of the stories of the offseason.

Below is an open letter from one of NFL quarterback Deshaun Watson’s 22 accusers. A total of 22 civil lawsuits are pending against Watson for sexual misconduct ranging from harassment to assault. Watson, who is currently dating “Boss Babe” influencer Jilly Anais, has denied the allegations.

Jilly, I hope this for your life. I am not a stranger, and yet you do not know me. I am a woman who was assaulted by your boyfriend. Deshaun Watson came into my place of work, my sole means of a modest income, and destroyed my mental health and my career. He destroyed my love for my job, my trust in strangers, and my foreseeable future. He terrified me, and tried to gratify himself at my expense. He degraded me.

Am I not a human? Am I not worthy of justice?

My understanding was Flores wanted Deshaun Watson and Ross did too. Watson came extremely close to being a Dolphin in October. Just needed the last 3 or 4 civil suits to agree to settle.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Dolphins chances of trading for Texans QB Deshaun Watson are "greatly diminished" after firing coach Brian Flores. 

This builds off previous reports that Flores was a driving force in the Dolphins' Watson interest. Dolphins owner Stephen Ross was also linked to Watson, and there are rumors Miami had a standing offer for Watson at the trade deadline pending his legal situation getting resolved. Flores is now a candidate for the Texans' coaching job, leading to speculation Watson could remain in Houston. Watson has reportedly started working towards a settlement, but his 2022 status remains up in the air. Even if Miami is out on Watson, there should be no shortage of suitors if his legal standing gets cleared this offseason.

is it just me..... or is the way we kind of just dismiss and toss out the word "resolved" when it comes to his "legal issues".....feel really icky and inappropriate......like him "settling" these things "resolves" them and they just go away....and then its back to business as usual.....

how any team is willing to basically mortgage the future in the trade capital they will have to give up and then the salary they would have to pay to acquire and support this guy and make him THE face of their franchise is beyond me....

If you look at Watson's behavior prior to this massage thing, he had been a model citizen, had done lots of great charity in Houston. He started a nonprofit charitable foundation a few years ago to assist the education, health and housing of underprivileged families. He was also a model citizen at Clemson. I think pretending he's this horrible human being and in no way worthy of being the face of a franchise is just silly talk. Yeah, the rub and tug thing he got himself into is bad, but I'm betting that never happens again, and there hasn't been a single felony charge brought against him. This isn't Ray Rice, Ray Lewis, or Mike Vick committing felonies here. He's a very likable guy and arguably top 5 at his position. I'm sure plenty of teams are happy to take him.

I agree with you. His legal issues may not be resolved in a manner in which any team will want to sign him. Either he is found guilty of criminal charges or he is found guilty of civil liability in the lawsuits against him or the publicity coming out of either criminal or civil trials is so bad that he will be forever damaged in the eyes of any team wanting to sign him.

But based on the evidence that has been made public so far, which a lot of it comes down to Watson's word vs. the plaintiff's word, I think it is unlikely criminal charges occur, and there is still a reasonable chance that the lawsuits get settled before trial. I think if the civil cases do go to trial, the chances of Deshaun playing again start to decrease. Any settlements which do not include NDA's also decrease Deshaun's chances of playing again.

lets not act like charity work, non profits to assist with education, health, housing, etc....is some great thing that separates Watson from most any other athlete....most of them have a management team that puts this stuff together for them and creates this type of portfolio for them to tell the world look how cool I am I am giving back to the community....he doesn't really get any extra cookies in his lunchbox for that.....

at this point no matter how this shakes out (sans fully innocent/not guilty/made up, which isn't going to happen because sounds like he has already offered like 17 "settlements" so that is basically admitting "guilt").....if a franchise wants to give up all that draft capital and pay that kind of money to have captain rub and tug be the FACE of their franchise.....go for it....

eta: and from the sounds of some of it....minimizing it to be simply a "rub and tug" in some cases is possibly not doing it justice....this wasn't Kraft stopping by the local massage parlor looking for a simple happy ending...

Speaking Wednesday, Giants owner John Mara told reporters "we're not trading for Deshaun Watson."

The Giants are in a tough situation with the salary cap as it is, and adding Watson would be an implausible move from a financial standpoint alone. Watson's legal issues obviously compound the difficulties in making any trade work, particularly to a cap-strapped franchise. Watson still seems likely to be elsewhere in 2021, but he won't be in New York.

People talk about Watson the player and how great he'd be here or there but I'm still unclear how he passes through the NFL "image car wash" in such a short time. The car wash is real but it can't perform miracles.

Not trying to be an apologist, I’ve ruffled feathers in this thread before. It’s just reality that allegations in a civil claim are one side of a full picture. We’ve already seen glimpses of the full picture, but likely won’t unless it goes to trial. At this point I’m just pretty sure Watson is a horn dog. Until criminality is a real question, I think that’s what the public will take from settlements.

The NFL seems to make exceptions for star players. See Tyreek Hill. At on point I thought he was done in the league for beating up his kid. Money talks and makes things go away IF the player is talented enough.

I'd agree on a he said she said singular event...BUT...22 women coming forward? Kind of hard to believe they are all just looking for a payday.

I agree but also hard to believe 22 women all thought this one attorney was the guy to represent them and that 22 women thought a guy contacting them on Instagram and flying them part way across the country to a hotel was just for a massage was perfectly normal.  My feeling, Watson is a horn dog with a kink, seems he could have went the professional escort service route much easier. I also think the majority if not all these women operate in more of a shady area then that of a professional massage therapist at a spa.

It didn't work out so well for Ray Rice, but I get your point.  Lot's of players get multiple chances, almost regardless of what they did, or allegedly did.

There wasn't any evidence to what Tyreek Hill did?  I don't know the details of his infraction.  What about that Rams player who killed a person driving drunk, did he get a second chance?

I definitely did not say "all are just looking for a payday." I said a civil complaint is one side of full picture. Maybe I should have been clearer and said 22 individual pictures.

Just out of curiosity, what is your reaction to the texts that were made public last August?

Massage therapy is a real thing done by professionals who have trained and continue to train to hone their craft.  This type of assumption is extremely unfair to that professional community.

If Watson wanted to go to shady places(which obviously do exist), these allegations would never have happened.

Shady places bring Shady diseases.  Perhaps he doesn't like to wear a raincoat.  I can't imagine flying someone across the country for a massage (ONLY), but I could be wrong.  I believe most, maybe not all, of these girls knew what they were getting into, but again, I could be wrong.

The Giants were talked about as a potential landing spot because A) they had draft capital to get him and B) New York is one of the few places speculated that Deshaun would waive his no trade clause and C) With Daniel Jones less than stellar play at QB, Deshaun would be an upgrade at a valuable position. But you are right, I don't think the Giants ever made it public that they had any interest in trading for Deshaun.

If I was a professional athlete with a 150M contract, I would fly in the best available people to help with my training and recovery.  Unless you have a 150M contract, I don't think what you would do and what a top level athlete would do have any bearing on each other.

The whole adage of "a picture is worth a thousand words" holds true here. People almost always believe their eyes. they don't always believe what they read or hear. If there was video of Hill grabbing his kids arm rather than just an allegation, he would be gone from the league. Same with Deshaun. If there was video proving the allegations, there would be no way he would get a second chance.

Maybe flying in an orthopaedic surgeon, sure. Not to disparage the profession but we're talking about a massage here.

except as it turns out.....Hill did absolutely nothing to his kid......Watson by attempting to settle (17) so far...is basically admitting guilt...

Proof? I'm serious because there seemed to be a whole lot of smoke and then it seemed to just go away because his wife seemed to do a 180 when it looked like her meal ticket might lose his job.
