QB Deshaun Watson, CLE (2 Viewers)

Cleveland should have moved on from him after last season, resigned Flacco and started looking for their QB of the future, but so far they just cannot admit to themselves the massive mistake they made.

I don’t disagree, but how do you move on from a guy with a literal $200MM dead cap hit? They made their bed by fully guaranteeing that awful contract. They’re stuck with him until at least 2026

So grateful for Cleveland. Without all those draft picks the Texans wouldn't be nearly the team they are today

Craziest part is they paid for him in draft picks and guaranteed money as if the towel incidents had never happened. Amazed there could actually be a worse trade and contract move than Broncos + Dangeruss, but here you go.

Need to give him a full year to find out with the money invested. It's guarantee so you can at least have him holding a clipboard rather than sitting on a couch.

no. you literally cannot move on from that.

you need to find a way to make it work. there is no getting out of that contract. its untradeable.

There is no making the contract work, just have to move on.

I'm under the impression you can't just not play for 2 years and come back fine, especially at the QB position. If you don't use it, you lose it. Leave it to the Browns to give out the worst contract in NFL history. Seems like it should have worked out but it didn't and now he's another year older and players always get healthier / more productive as they get old.

Desean Watson hasn't been relevant since 2020 and he makes too much money to give a **** to improve his performance. $230,000,000 guaranteed? Thanks guys.

The Browns have restructured the contract of QB Deshaun Watson, converting $44.79M of his 2024 base salary into a signing bonus and creating $35.832M in cap space, per source.
Cleveland now has over $62M in cap space, the most in the entire NFL.

So, 36 mill is pushed forward to future years. His contract has two years left, with a void year.

So cap numbers moving forward will be:

New Cap Hits/Dead Cap
2024: $27.9M/$200M
2025: $72.9M/$172M
2026: $72.9M/$99M
2027: $26.9M of void dead cap---per Spotrac

They can’t. Even with their restructuring now, the cap hits would be like 72M if they released him

I guess getting him for cheap in my superflex league is suddenly not starting to feel so good.

@MaryKayCabot

#Browns Deshaun Watson limited with 'general arm soreness' on Day 16, Stefanski says; no decision yet on if he'll face the Seahawks
I don't know if this guy is just trying to avoid preseason action or if he just flat out doesn't want to play for Cleveland.
Starting to turn into Ben Simmons

Has anyone successfully traded Watson away in any league for more than peanuts?
I’ve held him in SF mostly because nobody has made an offer better than like a 4th round pick or LB who wouldn’t start for me.

No - I'm trying but I had another draft today in what i consider a pro league and Watson was undrafted. Tells you a lot

Wonder if they regret the trade and contract yet.
Ever since the massage debacle this guy has never recovered.

One of my most drafted players.
What’s your reasoning? What has he shown after leaving Houston, even ignoring the injuries? I think there is more to it, always have.
Actually a whole bunch of reasons I think I covered earlier in this thread but short version is I'm not jumping to the book on him being wrote after 11 full games back with most of those games played in foul weather and/or with a bum shoulder. Especially at his price and with his supporting cast, coaches included.

Extremely cheap in SuperFlex. Willing to gamble at that price. I punted on QB altogether in SuperFlex and feel like I could do much worse than him as my 3rd QB.

Standard redraft… I wouldn’t start him with a ten foot pole.

Got him in rd 11 as my QB2 in a superflex startup. To be honest, it was plan C as QBs went way faster than expected (dak in rd 1!) and he was all that was left. Hate the person but the upside is still big between the talent and the offense.

I'm ok with him as my starting QB in one start QB leagues but ideally like him more as high end backup.

I believe you left something out.

Same. Got him and Stafford as my QBs while stock piling studs at RB and WR. 12 team superflex where half the drafters took two QBs rounds one and two and except for myself and one other drafter, each team had two QBs by end of round 3. We shall see if my math works…

potential league winner.

no, no.... LEAGUE WINNER!!!
If he isn't the same Texans QB.....again.... as a Browns QB in 2024, will we say he's a league winner this time next year, or give him another pass?

Make or break, baby.
Meaning, he's gonna make some of us money, and break others' hearts, xo
I agree with the "Make or break, baby" comment. If he doesn't become the same QB as he was in Houston, this year, then he isn't going to be.

One thing I'll say from a Texans homer perspective is he was always a boom or bust type of QB. Some weeks he was great, others he was non existent. What propped him up stat wise was the garbage time TDs and Texans playing from way behind against relaxed defenses. Then you add all the time off, mental hit from the 👋 drama and it doesn't surprise me he's underperforming.

He was a low end QB1 last year if you just take his 5 healthy games. Was within a point of QB6 after week 3, when he looked really close to his old self but hurt his shoulder late in that game.

If you say,"well that's a silly sample size to base anything from" I would tend to say that has merit but so does making conclusions based on 11 full games as a Brown.

Training camp reports have NOT been very good. I'm not sure how this is going to work out in real life, this game we play ain't real life.

If they can't mathematically cut him they can still bench him until they can. They would be so much better if they had stuck with Flacco for example. They should be trying to get a big of cap hit out of the way as soon as they can, so they can start over.

Just take the hit and dump him. Denver did it, so can you. This guy adds no value, and I would argue he's setting back young talent on the team with his lackadaisical play. I expect some sort of injury to him that lingers soon. Sand in his you know what, he'll find a way to sit.

Watson has been awful. I'm not going to panic yet. I will if he looks like this for another couple of weeks or vs weaker defenses.

Dallas has a good defense that is true, but dude has been bad for three years. He's not old, he's had a couple injuries but I really don't know what happened to this guy?
