QB Dwayne Haskins - 04.09.2022 - struck by car and killed (1 Viewer)

From the Washington Post:

"According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Haskins was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of I-595 in Broward County against oncoming traffic when he was struck by a dump truck. The crash was reported at 6:37 a.m. Saturday, and Haskins was pronounced dead on the scene. A traffic homicide investigation remains open, according to an FHP spokeswoman."

More: Prior to the collision, Haskins was walking westbound on 595 and attempting to cross lanes on the highway for “unknown reasons,”
Mind boggling. I can’t imagine what inspired this terrible idea. Awful.

Man, something seems off about this.
I’m in agreement. There’s more to this story. Unfortunately none of the things I can think of are good reasons, so I won’t speculate.  Time will tell.

ETA: a friend just texted our group saying he heard on his local radio (in that general area) that his car may have broken down.

Sounds like bad luck followed by a bad decision.

We can all wish our best but MoP has something to implore to those left alive...

-Make sure everyday the folks you value and love, you know...family, let them know how much you love them.

That is ALL,

-Cheers!
Well said. I called both my parents, & also my brother (in Germany) today after reading this news. I shouldn’t need this kind of reminder, but it never hurts to have one. ❤️

thus is every parents’ nightmare when your kids start driving. Or ever, really. ❤️

Do we know if he was alone? Claypool tweeted out he spent his final minutes with him but he may not have meant that in such a literal fashion.

Wait...what?

-Silly things...the man ran out of gas, literally.
So hard to believe I had to hear the interview and it was actually worse then the tweet. Did not finish it, shut it down when Gil started going on Haskins for choosing to have his own draft party.

Gil put out one of those PR scrubbed looking apology tweets since. You can give him a pass and say if you put most 90 year old men on a radio show every day odds are most of them are going to put their foot in their mouth at some point. But at the same time I think he showed what's really inside.

Just unfortunate those who are truly close to him had to hear his name dragged like a few people did today.  No reason for it.

This is hard to believe someone could be this callous.

Gil Brandt was asked on NFL radio today to say a few words about Dwayne Haskins. He said: • “He was living to be dead” • “It was always something with him” • “Maybe it he stayed in school he wouldn’t do silly things on a highway”
What an idiotic thing to say. He should be ashamed of himself.

Not a Haskins or Buckeye fan, but posting this because I have 2 sons in their twenties and he was somebody's son, brother, cousin, etc. RIP.

@LauraOkmin: Because I want to talk about WHO Dwayne Haskins was & the growth he was working on. A thread: I talked to Dwayne his first year w/WAS. He was struggling with the outside noise, admitting, “I care too much about what people think.” He told me he was surrounded by negativity and

@LauraOkmin: … found it hard to be positive. He told me he was doing everything he could to be around and to create the right energy. Studying extra hard, locking into details and being around people who made him feel good about himself.

@LauraOkmin: He told me he had a sense of “pleasing everyone else” and was making sure he didn’t do that again. Trying to go back to WHY he plays - because he loves the game. “I’m realizing who I am. I’m not an Ohio State QB, I’m not a first round draft pick. I’m working on ME…

@LauraOkmin: …and the potential I have to be a great quarterback and person.” I share this with hopes one day people care as much about who these men are as much as they care about their stats. I asked if we could take a picture after such a meaningful conversation. I’m grateful he said yes. https://twitter.com/LauraOkmin/status/1512898679694368774/photo/1

Social media and the need for everybody to open their mouth all the time to fill the constant never-ending content cycle will unfortunately continue leading to idiotic comments like Gil had here. Sucks.

RIP. This is tragic. Don't let people speaking ill of him detract from this tragedy as we turn our righteous anger towards the callous and maybe forget for a moment that a young man is gone needlessly and tragically.

Oh my. What terrible news.

Our son is really bummed. OSU grad who attended when Haskins was there. He said he was a pretty nice guy the few times he interacted with him. Saw him at a couple parties and in the gym a few times.

I feel bad for the driver.. now this is on their conscience for the rest of their life
It reminds me of a guy I worked with long ago in Louisville, who was driving on an off ramp behind a semi and when the semi swerved to miss a construction worker he hit him and killed him. Apparently the construction worker just walked in the path of the semi before he was hit.  Good driving by the trucker, but the guy I worked with didn't have time to react.  The construction worker's family tried to sue, claiming they were going to fast on the off ramp, but as far as I know it was dropped.

Not much he could do though.  If was 30 minutes before sunrise.  Imagine you are just driving to a job in your truck at 630am and then all of a sudden a person in standing in your lane.  Can`t prepare for that.

Not many questions being answered.  Was he coming home from somewhere or going out?   From what I heard on ESPN they were working out in the afternoons.

In the end it does not matter but it could make more sense.

Initial reports were that he was on his way to the airport to fly home.

Doesn't he have a cell phone?  If he ran out of gas one would think he could have called someone.  Did he spot a gas station across the freeway?  Otherwise, what motivated him to cross the road?

Hmmmmm…panicked about missing his flight….led to poor choice of walking or crossing the highway?????

I think back on my life and all the poor or snap decisions/choices I made and got away with them. Very fortunate.

I am a big Michigan fan, and thus love rooting against Ohio State. Absolutely doesn’t apply here though, and he should know that. All that applies here is that a young man tragically lost his life way too early.
I read what Schefter said, and while a poor choice of words, saying Haskins struggled catching on to an NFL team isn't nearly as bad as what Gil Brandt said, Michigan alum or not.  I think it is an overreaction and I'm a big OSU fan (stepson graduated from there).

A lot of speculation about what Haskins did and why he did it. But, maybe the driver of the dump truck was intoxicated or otherwise at fault? I had a friend of mine get hit by a snow plow around 6 a.m. while he was sitting in his truck at a stoplight. When I saw pictures of his truck, I was surprised he wasn’t killed.
The driver of the snow plow was under the influence at the time.

Really it is all just speculation and the only thing we know for sure is a 24 year old man lost his life and that’s a tragedy.

I agree. It obviously wasn’t as bad as Brandt’s comment and could very well not have been meant as a dig. When I saw it yesterday though, I thought poor choice of words. It’s best left out of the conversation.

I think he got the message, but it shouldn't blow up into anything larger.  What he said wasn't that bad.  Bad timing yes, but anyone continuing to take it further is being ridiculous.

It’s 6:30 AM on a Saturday. There’s probably not much traffic, maybe there was an exit for a gas station nearby. Also he doesn’t live in Florida and it was really early. He might not have felt he had someone to call.

It’s bringing up some sad memories for me. My neighbor growing up was killed at a similar age and circumstances. She got into an accident on the highway. She pulled off the side of the road and then exited her vehicle and in doing so was struck by a car. It was really tough, she was close to my sister and I honestly don’t think the parents ever recovered from that. They used to be pretty friendly in the neighborhood, really loved to work around outside their house, had a pool. They became pretty reclusive after that and stopped maintaining their pool and property like they had.

I feel bad for the things I said about his play when he was with Washington  :( So tragic to be that young and your life just taken in a moment.
Nobody has any idea something like this would happen.  There's no shame in having an opinion about a person, even if it's negative.  I didn't like him as a player, but that doesn't mean that the only thing I care about now is the tragic loss of life.

Agree, an opinion that he wasn't a good enough QB in the NFL doesn't mean that he wasn't a great young man with a full and fulfilling life ahead of him.  It's a terrible tragedy.

They just showed the "interstate" on some show and the dump truck.  I thought it might have been a smaller road where he decided to cross for whatever reasons, which have been covered in the thread.  I wanted to believe that, too.  But it looks like a full-blown highway, with a center-divider, if I'm not mistaken (quick glimpse).  How does one just end up running out in the front of that in the wee hours of the morning?

It just makes no sense, hate to say it, but suicide seems likely.  They also showed his last tweet, which again I saw quickly, but it was kind of cryptic, something like "it is what it is, etc..." and could be taken as a sort of goodbye.  Poor guy, so sad.  RIP.

Suicide is a possibility. It was my first thought.

Dwayne Haskins Had Chilling Final Instagram Story

From his last Instagram post:

>>'It is what it is’ will keep you at peace."<<

The authorities are awaiting toxicology reports and review of other evidence. One local station reported that he was on his way back to Pittsburgh. So, he would've been going east to FLL airport. If he had car trouble, he would've been in eastbound lanes perhaps crossing lanes by foot and then climb about a 3 foot concrete median to the westbound lanes. It was about 25 minutes before sunrise.  It's still a mystery.

To me that seems to be a reach.  I can think of better ways to off myself.

I also saw a few video's of the scene yesterday, where his car was parked, dump truck being towed away etc, etc. Based on where his car was parked and what was around him, and seeing it from a few angles,  I'm at even more of a loss to explain why he tried to cross that highway and we may never know.

It's natural for people to try and fill some blanks about what happened and speculate but I sure don't think it was suicide and I don't think for one second it was something putting him under the influence either.

Some of the posts in this thread are good examples of how conspiracy theories gain traction.

Your definition of a conspiracy theory is as out there as conspiracy theories.

Yeah, it's totally normal to not use a thing called a phone to get help and do what thousands do each day, wait for some help.  This wasn't Alaska, help is near.   And I doubt he was looking for a payphone.  Instead, run across a freeway in the dark and not see or hear a dump truck coming.  That's the most sensible conclusion, happens all the time, especially with 24 year old pro athletes.

It is what it is, right?

It's beyond sad to think what he might have been going through and I hope to god I'm wrong, I really do.  But it just doesn't add up to me, at all.  And that message he left doesn't exactly help your "conspiracy theory" hopes.  Yeah, the more I think about it, you're right, this must've been happenstance.

Saying "it is what it is" is not a cryptic thing. It's what athletes say all the time these days, thanks to Belichick. "It is what it is" is a catchphrase when something goes wrong and you can't do anything about it. It's not usually indicative of suicidal tendencies.

But this is gauche. It doesn't matter so much how it ended. What matters is that it did end, in any form a tragedy.

RIP

No need to embellish.  You left out the ending, "will keep you at peace".  If you are going to point to something in defense, why leave the rest out?

And you also picked out the very least of what doesn't make sense in all this.  His last "social" words or whatever you want to call it are a small piece of the puzzle.  I wasn't leaning on that, I'm more interested in how and why that actually took place.

You cherry-picked the easiest part to contest, while editing no less.  But whatever.

Please explain your thoughts about his actual actions and how they make sense to you.  Not trying to argue here, just clarifying.  All I'm saying is it doesn't add up to me.  And to call that a "conspiracy theory" is way over the top, as far as conspiracy theories go.  That poster should at least give an explanation, instead of this "I'm not having it!" stance.  Trying to turn it into a "conspiracy theory" is such a cop out.  As well as a thinly veiled attack.

There's plenty here that doesn't add up and more will come out.  But what's your take, besides "it is what it is" is not cryptic?

You cherry-picked, then conveniently left out the rest of what he said.  But whatever.

Dude, you have unchecked aggression problems. I didn't cherry-pick anything. If he said an outlook on life or philosophy will keep you at peace, he could have meant just that and nothing more.

I don't want to play wave the wand with strangers at 1:25 in the morning. You're baselessly speculating and ghoulish about it.

Young man is dead. They'll get to the bottom of it. Let's leave it at that.

Talk about unchecked aggression, from you???

You didn't cherry-pick or edit?  Sure you did.  No big deal, very lawyerly of you.

All I asked is to explain your position and for you to address the core of it, not just a small, exploitable (edited) part.  But no, diversion instead, followed by "young man is dead", as if I didn't show sympathy.  Go read what I wrote again, if you are wont to imply I am somehow not sympathetic.  Not cool.

And yes, they will get to the bottom of it.  I didn't know people weren't allowed to ponder, amicably, beforehand.  Thanks for the ruling.

Good night.

Has it been confirmed that his car was actually out of gas?    This seems to be an easy way to figure out if it was legit or a suicide.   If wanting to commit suicide, waiting until his car was out of gas seems like an unnecessary measure.

Just because something doesn't add up to you doesn't necessarily mean that it adds up to suicide. We don't know what or why it happened and may never know. Suicide is one of the possibilities. A very simple explanation to it may be that he saw and heard the dump truck coming but misjudged the speed and thought he could make it across the road safely. Maybe he had a medical episode.

My prayers and thoughts go out to the family and friends of Dwayne Haskins.  His death is such a tragedy.

"'It is what it is' will keep you at peace."

This reminds me of the Serenity Prayer:  "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change . . ."

I have read he was coming from the gym, heading to the airport, and coming from a girl's house after being out all night.  So nobody knows anything really.

Please drop.
