Seems weird crossing a major highway on foot, especially so early in the morning.Man, something seems off about this.

If a dump truck hit him wouldn't he see it? If far off he could possibly out run it to make it across. If closer why try it?Seems weird crossing a major highway on foot, especially so early in the morning.
Mind boggling. I can’t imagine what inspired this terrible idea. Awful. From the Washington Post:
"According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Haskins was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of I-595 in Broward County against oncoming traffic when he was struck by a dump truck. The crash was reported at 6:37 a.m. Saturday, and Haskins was pronounced dead on the scene. A traffic homicide investigation remains open, according to an FHP spokeswoman."
More: Prior to the collision, Haskins was walking westbound on 595 and attempting to cross lanes on the highway for “unknown reasons,”
I’m in agreement. There’s more to this story. Unfortunately none of the things I can think of are good reasons, so I won’t speculate. Time will tell.Man, something seems off about this.
Well said. I called both my parents, & also my brother (in Germany) today after reading this news. I shouldn’t need this kind of reminder, but it never hurts to have one.We can all wish our best but MoP has something to implore to those left alive...
-Make sure everyday the folks you value and love, you know...family, let them know how much you love them.
That is ALL,
-Cheers!
thus is every parents’ nightmare when your kids start driving. Or ever, really.I’m in agreement. There’s more to this story. Unfortunately none of the things I can think of are good reasons, so I won’t speculate. Time will tell.
ETA: a friend just texted our group saying he heard on his local radio (in that general area) that his car may have broken down.
Sounds like bad luck followed by a bad decision.
https://twitter.com/profootballtalk/status/1460100228158214145?s=21This is hard to believe someone could be this callous.
Gil Brandt was asked on NFL radio today to say a few words about Dwayne Haskins. He said: • “He was living to be dead” • “It was always something with him” • “Maybe it he stayed in school he wouldn’t do silly things on a highway”

So hard to believe I had to hear the interview and it was actually worse then the tweet. Did not finish it, shut it down when Gil started going on Haskins for choosing to have his own draft party.Wait...what?
-Silly things...the man ran out of gas, literally.
What an idiotic thing to say. He should be ashamed of himself. This is hard to believe someone could be this callous.

Social media and the need for everybody to open their mouth all the time to fill the constant never-ending content cycle will unfortunately continue leading to idiotic comments like Gil had here. Sucks. This is hard to believe someone could be this callous.

It reminds me of a guy I worked with long ago in Louisville, who was driving on an off ramp behind a semi and when the semi swerved to miss a construction worker he hit him and killed him. Apparently the construction worker just walked in the path of the semi before he was hit. Good driving by the trucker, but the guy I worked with didn't have time to react. The construction worker's family tried to sue, claiming they were going to fast on the off ramp, but as far as I know it was dropped.I feel bad for the driver.. now this is on their conscience for the rest of their life

Initial reports were that he was on his way to the airport to fly home. Not much he could do though. If was 30 minutes before sunrise. Imagine you are just driving to a job in your truck at 630am and then all of a sudden a person in standing in your lane. Can`t prepare for that.
Not many questions being answered. Was he coming home from somewhere or going out? From what I heard on ESPN they were working out in the afternoons.
In the end it does not matter but it could make more sense.
Hmmmmm…panicked about missing his flight….led to poor choice of walking or crossing the highway?????Initial reports were that he was on his way to the airport to fly home.
I am a big Michigan fan, and thus love rooting against Ohio State. Absolutely doesn’t apply here though, and he should know that. All that applies here is that a young man tragically lost his life way too early.
I read what Schefter said, and while a poor choice of words, saying Haskins struggled catching on to an NFL team isn't nearly as bad as what Gil Brandt said, Michigan alum or not. I think it is an overreaction and I'm a big OSU fan (stepson graduated from there).I am a big Michigan fan, and thus love rooting against Ohio State. Unbelievable! What is wrong with people? This is hard to believe someone could be this callous.

A lot of speculation about what Haskins did and why he did it. But, maybe the driver of the dump truck was intoxicated or otherwise at fault? I had a friend of mine get hit by a snow plow around 6 a.m. while he was sitting in his truck at a stoplight. When I saw pictures of his truck, I was surprised he wasn’t killed.Doesn't he have a cell phone? If he ran out of gas one would think he could have called someone. Did he spot a gas station across the freeway? Otherwise, what motivated him to cross the road?
I agree. It obviously wasn’t as bad as Brandt’s comment and could very well not have been meant as a dig. When I saw it yesterday though, I thought poor choice of words. It’s best left out of the conversation.I read what Schefter said, and while a poor choice of words, saying Haskins struggled catching on to an NFL team isn't nearly as bad as what Gil Brandt said, Michigan alum or not. I think he got the message, but it shouldn't blow up into anything larger. What he said wasn't that bad. Bad timing yes, but anyone continuing to take it further is being ridiculous.I agree. It’s 6:30 AM on a Saturday. There’s probably not much traffic, maybe there was an exit for a gas station nearby. Also he doesn’t live in Florida and it was really early. He might not have felt he had someone to call.Doesn't he have a cell phone? If he ran out of gas one would think he could have called someone. Did he spot a gas station across the freeway? Otherwise, what motivated him to cross the road?
Nobody has any idea something like this would happen. There's no shame in having an opinion about a person, even if it's negative. I didn't like him as a player, but that doesn't mean that the only thing I care about now is the tragic loss of life.I feel bad for the things I said about his play when he was with Washington :( So tragic to be that young and your life just taken in a moment.
Agree, an opinion that he wasn't a good enough QB in the NFL doesn't mean that he wasn't a great young man with a full and fulfilling life ahead of him. It's a terrible tragedy.Nobody has any idea something like this would happen. There's no shame in having an opinion about a person, even if it's negative. Suicide is a possibility. It was my first thought. They just showed the "interstate" on some show and the dump truck. I thought it might have been a smaller road where he decided to cross for whatever reasons, which have been covered in the thread. I wanted to believe that, too. But it looks like a full-blown highway, with a center-divider, if I'm not mistaken (quick glimpse). How does one just end up running out in the front of that in the wee hours of the morning?
It just makes no sense, hate to say it, but suicide seems likely. They also showed his last tweet, which again I saw quickly, but it was kind of cryptic, something like "it is what it is, etc..." and could be taken as a sort of goodbye. Poor guy, so sad. RIP.
To me that seems to be a reach. I can think of better ways to off myself. It just makes no sense, hate to say it, but suicide seems likely. Some of the posts in this thread are good examples of how conspiracy theories gain traction.
Saying "it is what it is" is not a cryptic thing.
Dude, you have unchecked aggression problems. I didn't cherry-pick anything. If he said an outlook on life or philosophy will keep you at peace, he could have meant just that and nothing more.No need to embellish. You left out the ending, "will keep you at peace". If you are going to point to something in defense, why leave the rest out?
And you also picked out the very least of what doesn't make sense in all this. His last "social" words or whatever you want to call it are a small piece of the puzzle. I wasn't leaning on that, I'm more interested in how and why that actually took place.
You cherry-picked, then conveniently left out the rest of what he said. But whatever.
Please explain your thoughts about his actual actions and how they make sense to you. Not trying to argue here, just clarifying. All I'm saying is it doesn't add up to me. And to call that a "conspiracy theory" is way over the top, as far as conspiracy theories go. That poster should at least give an explanation, instead of this "I'm not having it!" stance. Trying to turn it into a "conspiracy theory" is such a cop out. As well as a thinly veiled attack.
There's plenty here that doesn't add up and more will come out. But what's your take, besides "it is what it is" is not cryptic?

I don't want to play wave the wand with strangers at 1:25 in the morning. You're baselessly speculating and ghoulish about it.
Young man is dead. They'll get to the bottom of it. Let's leave it at that.
Good night.
Just because something doesn't add up to you doesn't necessarily mean that it adds up to suicide. We don't know what or why it happened and may never know. Suicide is one of the possibilities. A very simple explanation to it may be that he saw and heard the dump truck coming but misjudged the speed and thought he could make it across the road safely. Maybe he had a medical episode.Your definition of a conspiracy theory is as out there as conspiracy theories.
Yeah, it's totally normal to not use a thing called a phone to get help and do what thousands do each day, wait for some help. This wasn't Alaska, help is near. And I doubt he was looking for a payphone. Instead, run across a freeway in the dark and not see or hear a dump truck coming. That's the most sensible conclusion, happens all the time, especially with 24 year old pro athletes.
It is what it is, right?
It's beyond sad to think what he might have been going through and I hope to god I'm wrong, I really do. But it just doesn't add up to me, at all. And that message he left doesn't exactly help your "conspiracy theory" hopes. Yeah, the more I think about it, you're right, this must've been happenstance.
Saying "it is what it is" is not a cryptic thing. It's what athletes say all the time these days, thanks to Belichick. "It is what it is" is a catchphrase when something goes wrong and you can't do anything about it. It's not usually indicative of suicidal tendencies.
But this is gauche. It doesn't matter so much how it ended. What matters is that it did end, in any form a tragedy.
RIP
Talk about unchecked aggression, from you???
You didn't cherry-pick or edit? Sure you did. No big deal, very lawyerly of you.
All I asked is to explain your position and for you to address the core of it, not just a small, exploitable (edited) part. But no, diversion instead, followed by "young man is dead", as if I didn't show sympathy. Go read what I wrote again, if you are wont to imply I am somehow not sympathetic. Not cool.
And yes, they will get to the bottom of it. I didn't know people weren't allowed to ponder, amicably, beforehand. Thanks for the ruling.
Good night.
