QB J.J. McCarthy, MIN (6 Viewers)

@TPPSkol
Wow, a bombshell back and forth between @colincowherd and @DMRussini on Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy and how the organization is propping him up when it’s not the reality 🤯

“Do I think J.J. McCarthy is wowing everyone at training camp? No, I don’t… [Vikings fans] are going to be disappointed…”

"There's almost this protective bubble or sort of an elevation of what he's doing..."

"There is a lot of lifting up of JJ McCarthy..."

Neither one holds back on what they're hearing about the @Vikings QB.

I wonder what purpose it serves to get this news out there at this time (not you Faust). Is it clicks or to be first? Or to temper expectations?

Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell said J.J. McCarthy will play in the team’s preseason opener against the Texans.
O’Connell didn’t say how long McCarthy would play, but he did confirm that the second-year signal-caller will see the field for the first time since his preseason debut last season. McCarthy has had a strong training camp by most reports, and enters the season as the unquestioned QB1 with Sam Darnold now in Seattle. We wouldn’t expect McCarthy to play more than a few series before giving way to the backups, but it will be good to see him in action for the first time since his knee surgery.

Finally something concrete on the field for either the fans or haters to evaluate. Or both.

More like Cowherd has dug a hole so deep with his hawt taki that he may as well keep going.

Total projection here about who's making stuff up and who actually knows what they are talking about.

I haven't followed him on this take. Has he been anti McCarthy for awhile?

Yes.

He is double or quadrupling down now on how McCarthy is no good.

As if he knows better than KOC.

J.J. McCarthy completed 4-of-7 passes for 30 yards in the Vikings’ preseason Week 1 game against the Texans, adding eight yards on his lone carry.

Kevin O’Connell’s starters, minus Justin Jefferson, played a single series in their first action of the preseason, with McCarthy leading the drive to a successful field goal before being removed from the game. McCarthy enters his second professional season as the unquestioned starter under center in Minnesota after missing the entirety of his rookie year with a torn meniscus. His situation could arguably not be better considering he’s playing for one of the top offensive minds in the league and has a supporting cast of pass-catchers consisting of Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson. Continue drafting him as an upside QB2 in fantasy drafts the rest of the way.

Thought he looked good although it was just one series. He was slinging it pretty good and hooked up with Addison multiple times. His scramble on 4th was a well-designed play that he executed well and got out of bounds after the 1st. He did sail one over the middle on 3rd down and the WR was open.

He looks huge. Last year he was a skinny kid, now he looks like a slightly less beefy CPep out there.

About the same size - IIRC CPep was 260, JJM looks like he’s at about 235-ish. I think he was 219 at the combine. Whatever his weight, he’s definitely been hitting the training room.
Hyperbolic much?

Culpepper was like Christian Okoyee with a cannon arm.

No doubt McCarthy has put on some weight still growing into the form he will play at but come on man.

He looks big is all. I don’t think it’s that hyperbolic. He’s at least put on 15 lbs since draft day. Have you seen him lately?

He’s the same height and maybe 25 lbs lighter - that’s not hyperbolic at all.

I don’t get why this guy isn’t playing in preseason games like he’s a stud or something. Even Mahomes is getting some snaps.

As far as the weight gain, big deal. It’s essentially all fat and water. It might be more of a detriment than a help. Gaining a discernible amount of muscle in the offseason in pro athletes has been debunked for years (without the aid of drugs). Now, if you told me McCarthy just started lifting, then there might be something to be said for gaining some noticeable muscle over the course of 6 months or so, but that’s obviously not the case.

Culpepper the heaviest successful QB on this list.

I'm a huge fan of Culpepper so just seemed like a bit of a slight to him saying McCarthy is similarly sized. I do agree with your overall point.

Culpepper would have LB and defensive linemen just bounce off of him when they tried to tackle him and he would hold the ball too long because more often then not the first guy can't bring him down.

It's different.

oh for sure. I loved watching CPep play.

It no slight on CPep at all, nor a comparison of their abilities.

Just sayin - JJM looks like he hulked out a little. I’d read he trained hard when he couldn’t play. I’m hopeful it helps his deep ball strength, too.

There’s a lot of skepticism around here. I think JJM has a monster season ahead. If it’s a little slow start with JJ’s hammy & Addison’s suspension, imma try to buy on the dip.

I’m with you. I traded him for Josh Allen and I have seller’s remorse

But you got Josh (QB) Allen!

Was that straight up?

I gave up Pacheco and Aiyuk. A future 2nd also. Our QBs get a point every 10 yds. passing. It adds up. I was really set on McCarthy because that is my experimental league I was talking about with you in the Mooney thread. I want a share of the young man. I think he’s going to be awesome,

Ok, so I have 2 thoughts on this:
1. You definitely could have rolled the dice with JJM, kept Pacheco, and Aiyuk

But also

2. I wouldn’t have a stitch of regret over it. Aiyuk is headache, Pacheco has a short window IMO, and a 2nd is whatever…. You made a sharp, solid deal to get a top 3 (arguably the #1) dynasty QB. I would make that deal every time if I were you. Great trade - big boy go get your guy trade, and sharp value of a hurt WR, Pacheco & a 2nd.

The only way this burns you is if Allen sucks. JJM can be very good and this is still a good trade for you. Mutually exclusive.

My $.02

Thank you. I felt like it was the right trade to make for my team’s performance. I definitely wanted McCarthy and finagled a way to select him that year, so it was tough when the guy approached me with the deal.

You won the trade at the time you made it, whenever you did, and you've only won it more since. KOC's QB will always be high in demand but JA is at worst the 3rd most talented QB and probably the most talented.

She shrugs then puts her hands together in a triangle.

Im not sure what Im supposed to see here?

As a Vikings fan the people I listen to are at the team facility every day they can be and they say there is a segment of people who also have access who are stirring up drama when there isnt any.

For example the talk about the Vikings trading Justin Jefferson or more recently that they would sign Aaron Rodgers.

Totally baseless claims that time proves were not true.

There are plenty of men that fill out their frame in the 20-23 age time frame adding more muscle. JJM is only 22 now so we are talking about a young guy training year round with more resources than he has had before. it's not out of the question that he put on muscle. Now if you are talking about a 30 yr old it would be a different story.

There are a lot of FF skill positions depending on McCarthy’s ability to catch on quickly this year. Again, with their defense and bolstered run game I would be surprised if they ask him to shoulder too much this season. I have lowered my expectations of MIN pass catchers this season. I think McCarthy has a chance to be a good QB, but asking him to be right off the bat is a big ask.

IIRC he lost a lot of weight last year with his knee injury recovery so this could be merely gaining it back.

He does look very skittish in his first start, but it’s not all on him. The vaunted OL is not protecting him at all and the run game isn’t working to help alleviate some of the pressure.

He has zero time to throw, and the Thielen drop on 3rd & 2 wasn’t on him.

They definitely seem to have training wheels on him. Also gotta tip your cap to the stout Bears D. Constant pressure and good coverage.

It’s way too early to grade the kid. He doesn’t look good but it’s his rookie season.

NFL career following the same script as his college career. Tonight is a perfect example of what most of his believers (myself included) were buying into.

Coming back after that pick 6 is one of the more impressive things I can recall a rookie QB doing in their first game.
