Fair points Trav and we don't need to discuss the subtle differences between Dalton v Goff. Other than the fact that Goff already took a team to the SB and Dalton never made it past the wild card round. The bottom line is too many Dilfer/Hostetler type QBs have SB rings to suggest that neither Goff or Dalton could be numbered among them.I think I disagree with all 3 of these points. This is fair but QBs of that caliber, and I personally think Goff>Dalton, are good enough to lead teams to the SB and win.Unless Goff plays way better than he has so far this season, I think it'd be a mistake to think he's the long term QB. Goff is the new Andy Dalton, he looks good in spurts, but shouldn't be the plan. If that Rams pick is top-5, I think QB should be priority #1. I'd be ok with that guy sitting behind Goff initially though.
Rolling the dice with Goff allows them to add to the defense and, possibly make them legit contenders as soon as 2023. Going with a rookie pushes back that time frame a year, at least, and with this offensive line and Ben Johnson at OC, you want to push for the ring right ####### now!!!
They likely will not make the playoffs this year, I still think they will lose on Sunday even with Zach Wilson under center (although I did pick them in my survivor pool), but if they continue to do what they've been doing and make the playoffs, no team is going to want to face them.
Personally, I think Dalton>Goff, at least the Bengals version of Dalton, who was long considered the line at QB, as in, "is your QB better than Dalton? If so he's a franchise QB, if not, keep looking." I don't see drafting a rookie as something that sets them back. They have 2 1sts, and Goff is affordable, if you want to go the Trey Lance (with better health hopefully) route. But, its also a great QB class, and going to situation with a great OL, and good OC will make any rookie QB look better.
I actually think the Lions are a good bet to make the playoffs. Its highly unlikely both Washington and New York to make it. There is even a chance neither makes it. One of them will lose this week (though 2 teams tying in both their games in 1 season would be amazing) and have 2 likely losses on the schedule in the last 3. Washington has SF/Cle/Dal after this week, and NY has Min/Ind/Phi. Maybe that Eagles game is meaningless, but not if Dallas beats Philly next week. Meanwhile the Lions schedule is very nice especially if they win this week, with Car/Chi/GB left, all teams who probably wouldn't mind improving their draft position, though Carolina might somehow win their garbage division. The other team in the hunt is Seattle, but they seem to be falling apart and still have KC/NYJ/LAR left.
The Bengals had their shot somewhere between 2011-2015 but the Lions shot is right now. They can try to keep it together while they develop a QB next year and hope Ben Johnson sticks through 2024 or they can make their play for 2024/2024. I know Aaron Rodgers wishes the Pack hadn't wasted draft capital on Love while their window was open. I suspect the Packer management wonders the same.
I like the Lions a lot this year but they're behind the 8-Ball and both the Jets and Panthers are also playing for a shot at the playoffs . They won't be easy outs, unless the Lions are more improved than any of us truly think they are. I also guarantee the Packers aren't going to roll over to punch the Lions ticket.
I don't put too much stock in analytics but I recognize there is some value right now and they are getting better but ATM, IIRC, the Lions have a 24% chance to get in. So it's all probably a moot point.
