QB Jimmy Garoppolo, LAR (1 Viewer)

Jimmy g would be a great fit in Seattle imo. They are looking for a game manager, pocket passer who can audible into the right call at the line and lead s run heavy attack.

If reading defenses and calling audibles is something a team wants in a QB, then Jimmy ain't it.

The Athletic's Mike Sando reports the 49ers could wait until training camp to trade Jimmy Garoppolo.

Sando cited a league source who said the Niners could exploit a team's QB neediness this summer, waiting until July or August to deal Garoppolo, who recently had shoulder surgery. While it's unclear what the Niners could get for Garoppolo, an NFL executive said the 49ers getting a first round pick in exchange for Jimmy G would be "extremely far-fetched." The Saints, Panthers, and Colts could be landing spots for Garoppolo, depending on what happens with Deshaun Watson in the coming days and weeks. There remains a chance Garoppolo enters the 2022 season as the 49ers' starter: ESPN's Adam Schefter said in early March that it's not a "lock" the team parts ways with Jimmy G this offseason.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport confirms the Colts are interested in a trade for Jimmy Garoppolo.

With Kirk Cousins signing an extension with the Vikings and Mitchell Trubisky signing with the Steelers, the already-limited quarterback market is quickly drying up. The Steelers had apparently been in the mix for Jimmy G, so that is one less competitor for Indy. There was a Monday report that the Niners could wait until training camp to flip Garoppolo, but the heavy odds are that he will be moved this week.

The Athletic's Matt Barrows reports that for the last week Jimmy Garoppolo's market has "been Indianapolis and ... Indianapolis."

The hope is that the Deshaun Watson trade will eventually create a secondary market, but this appears to be yet another transaction that is being held up as Watson decides which of four teams to take his talents to in 2022. Regardless of what heats up, it does seem like Garoppolo to Indianapolis continues to be the chalk pick.

ESPN's Dianna Russini reports the Colts didn't pursue Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder surgery) because of his recovery timeline.

Garoppolo underwent surgery in early March, and per Adam Schefter, he is expected to resume throwing in early July. Schefter also reported that Garoppolo missing all the early offseason would not impact his trade market, but that appears to have been overly optimistic. Russini reports that the Colts' concerns weren't medical, but instead related to how Garoppolo would be able to transition to a new team while missing several months of the offseason. Garopplo's trade market was also impacted by Tom Brady's return, the unexpected availability of Matt Ryan and Baker Mayfield, and the Falcons' and Steelers' reclamation projects: Marcus Mariota and Mitch Trubisky. As it stands now, with Mayfield still looking for a new team, Garoppolo looks likely to remain in San Fransico through the early summer. If a contender loses their quarterback early in training camp, it's possible that Garoppolo is traded. It's also possible that the 49ers aren't happy with what Trey Lance shows in the spring, and end up reinstalling Garoppolo as their starting quarterback during training camp.

The Jimmy/Lance story is one of the weirdest I can remember. Fan opinions irrational and all over the place (at least on Bay Area sports radio), the reporting is all over the place too. Faust's last 2 posts are literally a microcosm of this whole story.

1. "The Athletic's Matt Barrows reports that for the last week Jimmy Garoppolo's market has "been Indianapolis and ... Indianapolis.""

and a week later,

2. "ESPN's Dianna Russini reports the Colts didn't pursue Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder surgery) because of his recovery timeline."

I know a lot has changed in Indy with them trading for Matt Ryan (love that move for Indy) but we go from "Indy is very interested” to “actually, they weren’t interested at all because of his surgery". Um…I think Indy knew about the surgery a week earlier. It’s just so much b.s. that I, like most other football fans, just want this whole story to go away.
And then in the Trey Lance thread it’s quotes about 9ers leadership not sure if they’re committed to Trey. A dude they paid a boatload of draft picks for. I mean, come on!
the 9ers said what their plan was all along: Jimmy was their starter last year and Trey is a raw project with upside. They follow that plan to a playoff run and people still question why they aren’t starting Trey. Wtf? So they say what their plan is and when they follow it people wondering why they’re not doing something different.
ok, I’m gonna stop there since there are so many hypocritical and irrational arguments on this situation playing out in reports and such that it’s exhausting.  I have the added torture of being a Raiders fan in the Bay Area, so I’m stuck with this talk on local sports radio, but now I just turn it off if they’re talking about Jimmy/Trey.
/rant. Sorry :)

Sort of.

Here’s how I see it:

Colts were going to go after JimmyG or Marcus Mariota (who they were connected to 1st, out of the gate after they dealt Wentz)

JimmyG’s surgery was not a mystery, no. But the recovery timeline emerged later. It was initially described as a clean-up. Then it came out that he wouldn’t be throwing until June/July and teams got spooked.

And rightfully so.

So both things are true: the Colts were the primary suitor for JimmyG. Then the Colts found out his recovery would put them in a terrible position if he had a setback, so they looked elsewhere.

And then the Watson chaos, and then the subsequent fallout of ATL finally realizing “oh, wait. We can trade Ryan? Huh.”

in between, the Colts were again connected to MM, which was described as imminent.

Then the Colts had the opportunity to get Ryan as their win-now/bridge guy, the falcons picked up MM as their “early pick” bridge guy, and the Niners were left holding the bag without a chair when the music stopped.

Re: Lance, I’ve heard so many conflicting stories. To be clear, from everything I’ve seen, there isn’t a direct quote from anyone in Niners leadership, management or coaching who had publicly said Lance sucks, or Lance wasn’t worth the deal.

The consistent drum beat is that they got exactly who they thought they were getting when they dealt up to get him, and they’re thrilled with his progress.

That’s it. That’s the gist of what we know about Lance. The rest is sportswriters who have to make a living. Fans who want JimmyG to stay after “leading” the team to the playoffs. It’s a lot of smoke and I can’t find a fire.

The “Lance isn’t ready” is coming from the talking heads on television & radio. It started with questions like, “they were just a playoff team, what if Lance isn’t ready? They should keep Jimmy!!” And that concerned question evolved to “sources say Lance isn’t ready. Do the Niners have to keep Jimmy?!” Which then evolved to, “Niners are trading Jimmy, but all the talk has been about how not ready Lance is.”

Its the media feeding itself, IMO.

Now, that said, is Lance ready? Hell if I know. I sure hope so, because he has “all the tools”, as they say. He looks physically imposing, he’s fast, he has a cannon, and reportedly he can throw with touch & accuracy too.

Does he know the playbook?

Can he read a defense?

Can he make his check down progressions?

Best way to find out is to play him & see what happens. No one was expecting the Niners to make the playoffs when they dealt all that capital to move up for Lance, so I’m hard pressed to see putting the  “playoffs or bust” pressure on Lance that the media & fans seem way too eager to do.

Let the kid play & we’ll know how good he is. And give him the shot at OTJ training to see how he develops.

Everything else is just noise. Well, that and JimmyG’s timing for his shoulder procedure.

Nah. Its the Rams & Bucs.

Niners window opens when the Rams budget catches up with them & Brady retires for real.

Now’s the time to build a bully for next year, and get Lance up to speed.

I wouldn't write off Green Bay just yet. Adams is a sizeable loss, but at the same time, the OL should be a ton better with Bakhtiari and Jenkins back, and the defense gets Alexander back, and they have 2 1sts and 2 2nds. I think they'll be different, but I don't see them suddenly cratering just because Adams is gone.

Truthfully, I think Tampa is the best team, and would argue they were in 2021 as well, they were just so banged up in the playoffs.

San Fran is in the hunt, I like the Rams slightly more than them, but I could also see the Rams taking a big step back. They look quite a bit worse than they did in January, losing Miller, Whitworth, Williams, and even guys like Corbett and Joseph-Day.

I was talking to my dad about Rodgers signing knowing Adams was leaving and my dad's response was that Rodgers didn't really care about winning.  He wanted to drive his price up as high as he could and pad his career numbers so he can get into the HOF by settling into the risk adverse play style that lost GB the playoff game against the 9ers.   Sure, GB will likely make the playoffs based on their d, ground game, and Rodgers playing in order to not throw an interception every time instead of throwing up the prayer ball that would shift the momentum of the game.  But it won't get them past the Bucs or Rams, and it didn't get them past the 9ers who this year get a fully healthy off season of everyone in their offense for the first time in forever (minus Jimmy of course).

Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that the 49ers "seem" willing to hold on to Jimmy Garoppolo "for a while" to allow him to get healthy and see if any trade offers materialize.

The Garoppolo/Baker Mayfield pod of the quarterback market has dried up ahead of the draft, but that might be just dandy in Kyle Shanahan's head. After all, the 49ers clearly didn't feel any urgency to get Trey Lance on to the field in 2021, so why would they rush him this year? Garoppolo is in the final year of his contract and has a $26.9 million cap hit -- the 49ers will have to move him or restructure players to sign their draft class, and they've been rumored to be interested in extending Nick Bosa and Deebo Samuel off their rookie contracts. It certainly seems like the 49ers are heavily incentivized to move Garoppolo, but don't currently like the offers they have in hand.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said there's a "scenario" in which Jimmy Garoppolo remains on the 49ers roster in 2022.

Trey Lance szn could be put on hold until 2023 if the Niners can't find a suitable trade partner in the coming weeks. NBC Sports' Matt Maiocco, a plugged-in Niners beat writer, reported this week that the team "seems" willing to hang on to Garoppolo "for a while" until a trade market materializes. And ESPN's Adam Schefter reported after the 2021 season that Lance was still developing as a pro QB and that Garoppolo could give the Niners and their excellent roster their best chance of winning in 2022. Shanahan told reporters on Tuesday morning that the team hasn't "made a call on what it’ll look like if both [quarterbacks] are on the roster" in 2022. Assuming Lance gets any starts this year is a big leap for fantasy managers drafting best ball teams this spring.

Did John Lynch tell teams he's gotten an offer of two, second-round picks for Jimmy Garoppolo? "Not true," the 49ers GM said today. Lynch said none of the talks he's had with suitors ever reached a stage where an offer was made.

https://twitter.com/mattbarrows/status/1508507913442271232?t=IpP0EektcZoHYTSnc2AHow&s=19
The rumor had to start with SF or the agent(maybe so teams would know he expects an extension upon showing up to a new team?). I don't know how else that rumor would get started.

Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) said he has yet to resume throwing but believes he will be ready for training camp.

Garoppolo underwent shoulder surgery six weeks ago. "There's a lot of steps in between now and then," Garoppolo told the AP's Rob Maaddi, "but I think we'll be ready." Garoppolo was expected to be traded this offseason, but the shoulder injury has seemingly complicated that process. With quarterback chairs getting filled in around the league, it is not a given he gets moved before training camp, potentially setting up an interesting competition between him and Trey Lance for the starting job.

ESPN's David Newton writes that the Jimmy Garoppolo "never has been high on the team radar because he's not considered much of an upgrade from [Sam] Darnold."

Well, that's certainly a take. Garoppolo and Baker Mayfield are the two main veteran options connected to Carolina, and the Panthers absolutely have the cap space to make it happen. But they have neither the draft resources (no second or third this year) nor, apparently, the inclination to believe in either of those quarterbacks. This will be the main quarterback drama for draft weekend assuming nothing unexpected pops up.

The Associated Press's Steve Reed reports "the Panthers are still interested in" Jimmy Garoppolo.

As was just reported on the connection between Carolina and Baker Mayfield, the issue is money. A team trading for either quarterback would inherit their salary, and neither is cheap. Garoppolo is set to make $24.2 million this year, and almost all of that will be shifted to his new team if no changes are made. Reed noted that a trade partner would need to "pick up a large portion of their salary" for Carolina to make a deal. For now, it looks like Garoppolo and Mayfield are stuck on their current teams.

I dunno. If the powers in control in CAR honestly thought JimmyG would/could save their jobs they would have already made moves to fit him under their cap. When you are a 12 loss team you don't have to worry about keeping the nucleus together. The nucleus is what is getting you fired.

This reads to me, "Plan C didn't really work out for CAR so if they can get JimmyG for next to nothing they will be happy to throw him up against the wall".

Carolina would be a great place for G. McDoogals quick passing suits him well. Get CMac and Moore the ball in space. Jimmy was always good at handing off and throwing screens.

Seriousness, he does well getting the ball out quick. Despite his well documented faults you have to give him credit for a quick release.

ESPN's Nick Wagoner writes that the 49ers would only keep Jimmy Garoppolo around this season at "a significantly reduced price."

"The 49ers appear ready to hand the reins to [Trey] Lance and see where it takes them," notes Wagoner, who doesn't include Garoppolo in the team's initial 53-man roster projection. This has the feel of a situation where nobody will actually count Garoppolo out until he's off the roster, but the drumbeat that this will be Lance's job on opening day has been consistent from the start of the offseason.

Still not cleared to throw (though this supposed to happen in coming weeks) and scheduled to make 26 mil backing up Trey Lance.

I'm not cap wizard so maybe one of the smart people can help here but seems like maybe the Jimmy situation is holding up the Deebo extension.

Shoes yet to drop:

Watson suspension- if it's a full season, do the Browns get involved? Healthy Jimmy G is an upgrade over Jacoby B.

Throwing shoulder- any team taking on salary or giving up draft capital is going to want to be assured that the man can still throw a football.

So Seattle or Cleveland?

Rebuilding teams like Detroit and Houston seem like odd fits to me.

Or he just takes a pay cut and stays on as a backup?

So Seattle or Cleveland?
Seattle seems less likely as a trade destination given the division rival. Now if the 49ers just cut Jimmy, that's obviously a different story.

Cleveland could conceivably be an option if/when Watson is suspended - going with Brissett just doesn't seem viable. As with Baker and Carolina, have to think a trade obstacle would be how much of Jimmy's contract the Niners would eat.

Jimmy Garoppolo's agent refuted rumors that Garoppolo could be traded to the Buccaneers this summer.

Don Yee, Jimmy G's longtime agent, told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero that there had been no talks between the Niners and Bucs, as erroneously reported on a podcast. The Tampa Bay Time's Rick Stroud confirmed the Bucs have no interest in acquiring Garoppolo. Garoppolo, a 30-year-old, oft-injured QB, would certainly be a strange heir apparent to Tom Brady, 44, who could play for another two or three years (the two played together in New England). Yee said Garoppolo is progressing on schedule with the shoulder injury that may have tanked his trade appeal over the past few months. Jimmy G has a chance to once again start for the Niners, though Trey Lance should be considered the favorite to start Week 1.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports the Seahawks "have discussed the possibility" of Jimmy Garoppolo playing for them.

With a quarterback room headlined by Drew Lock and Geno Smith, it makes sense for Seattle to leave no stone unturned in their search for a starting passer. Now that Baker Mayfield has landed in Carolina, Seattle may be the only possible landing spot. As Fowler noted, there are plenty of other hurdles to clear before a trade could be worked out. Garoppolo is still recovering from shoulder surgery and will need to pass a physical. His contract will also need to be reworked before he is moved. It's possible that Seattle gambles on the 49ers being forced to cut Garoppolo for cap purposes instead of trading for the veteran. Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf would both get significant boosts to their fantasy value if Garoppolo is ultimately their starting quarterback.

The Athletic's Matt Barrows reports the Seahawks and Texans "seem like longshots" to trade for Jimmy Garoppolo.

With both teams rebuilding, neither are great fits for Garoppolo, who has a $24 million cap hit in the final year of his contract. The Browns' win-now situation with Deshaun Watson facing a year-long suspension could make them a more attractive destination for Garoppolo, according to Barrows, allowing Garoppolo to rehab his value as a starter ahead of 2023 free agency. Garoppolo has been throwing for 2-3 weeks and is on track to be cleared for the start of training camp.

I’m calling it: Jimmy Garoppolo will be a member of the Cleveland Browns. And he will fill in admirably while Watson is suspended.

This is going to sound utterly crazy, but as somebody who has Metcalf, I'd rather have Geno Smith throwing to him. Jimmy G has proven he's unreliable in both decision-making and throwing the ball. At least teams will stack the box with Smith, allowing DK freedom to move without necessarily drawing double coverage.

If Watson gets a full year or "indefinite" suspension, I agree.  Team is built to compete now and they won't roll with Brissett if Watson is out.  Jimmy would be a good fit in that offense.

I just read that the Giants have interest, which would also make sense.

IMHO, the Browns fortunes don't get appreciably better with Garoppolo manning the pivot vs Brissett...

....and also IMHO, I'd take the Giants rumors with a grain of salt, in that, if I'm not mistaken, Daboll has history with Tyrod Taylor, the Giants current backup QB, and he very might well be comfortable with TT running the offense if Jones falters.

I just think it's getting kind of late to bring a QB, and not a superstar one, at that,  in cold to learn an offense, develop chemistry and timing, and myriad other things, tangible and intangible that go into being an NFL starting QB. It's July 17th...Training Camps open in less than 2 weeks.
