QB Jimmy Garoppolo, LAR (1 Viewer)

Jimmy Garoppolo completed 16-of-27 passes for 239 yards and one touchdown in the 49ers' 24-9, Week 4 win over the Rams.

Unlike his counterpart on the other side, Garoppolo took care of the football and wasn't sacked a single time despite the Niners missing star LT Trent Williams due to an ankle injury. Garoppolo got the ball out quick, and Deebo Samuel did all the work on his touchdown, turning a quick slant into a 57-yard score. Garoppolo had four pass plays of 20-plus yards. Not a volume passer, Garoppolo will be a low-end QB2 for Week 5 against the lowly Panthers in a spot the Niners should be able to run the ball.

Jimmy Garoppolo completed 25-of-37 pass attempts for 303 yards and two touchdowns and one interception in the 49ers' 44-23 Week 7 loss to the Chiefs.

Garoppolo, for the second straight week, posted solid fantasy numbers thanks to pass volume in a negative game script. The 49ers chased points throughout the second half while Patrick Mahomes and the KC offense shredded the injury-marred San Francisco secondary. As he did in Week 6, Garoppolo targeted George Kittle and Brandon Aiyuk heavily in the middle of the field. He checked down to Christian McCaffrey twice for 24 yards. Jimmy G is a serviceable fantasy play as long as the 49ers can't play the way they want to play: By establishing the run, shortening the game, and turning their QB into a handoff machine in a hyper-conservative Kyle Shanahan system. They might be able to do just that in Week 8 against the Rams.

ALL YOUR SCRIPTS MAKE ME NOT SUCK MAN - Jimmy "The Safety Guy" Garoppolo

Ultimately, though, I think this narrative is fairly credible and stands up to scrutiny. Critics have been saying for years that Jimmy G is a system quarterback propped up by a Shanahan offense that, to a large extent, makes his decisions for him. If Shanny no longer has the time to cover up Garoppolo’s flaws, what we’re seeing unfold would be the logical result.

IN case you missed it, which it's obvious you always do:

Tue iin five starts is ranked #3 on that list, who has thrown 9 TDs to 6 INTs, which I dunno how EPA works when it';s against turnovers.

And now some news that isn't out of Tampa chasing meth gators:

Garoppolo passed for 303 yards and tallied two touchdowns against one interception, numbers that don’t do justice to an afternoon spent letting go of the ball in a panic or holding onto it in a daze. San Francisco’s first five trips inside the Chiefs’ 30-yard line yielded just one touchdown. The pick, a five-yard lollipop nominally to wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud and actually to cornerback Joshua Williams, came when a backpedaling Garoppolo missed Jeff Wilson running free for the goal line. A fourth-quarter safety resulted from two consecutive sacks, the first occurring when Garoppolo stepped up into the closing doors of 600 pounds of defensive linemen, the latter when he bet that he could outrun Frank Clark.

How about some week 8 power rankings since this thread is chock full of junk numbers:

16. 49ers (3-4; No. 16): Christian McCaffrey doing Christian McCaffrey things may not be enough to overcome Jimmy Garoppolo doing Jimmy Garoppolo things.

McCaffrey, George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, and Kyle Juszczyk all raise the ceiling for an offense desperate to limit Garoppolo throwing downfield and into harm's way. No offense in the NFL averages more yards after the catch per reception (6.91), and Garoppolo ranks first in EPA per attempt on throws made within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. He ranks 18th in the same statistic on throws of 10 or more air yards.

Jimmy Garoppolo completed 19-of-28 passes for 240 yards in the 49ers' 22-16, Week 10 win over the Chargers, adding three yards and a touchdown on five carries.

The 49ers focused their efforts primarily on the run as they battled the beaten-down Chargers front seven, who at one point in the game were down to just three healthy defensive linemen. Jimmy G's best throws all went to the electric youngster Brandon Aiyuk, who was Garoppolo's preferred option on third down for most of the evening. Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, and Christian McCaffrey combined to see 19 targets on Garoppolo's 28 pass attempts, with Kittle largely confined to blocking duties and Deebo Samuel splitting time between wide receiver and in the backfield. The much-needed win brings the 49ers within a half game of the division-leading Seahawks as the team prepares to face the Cardinals in Mexico City in Week 11.

Jimmy Garoppolo completed 20-of-29 passes for 228 yards and four touchdowns in the 49ers' 38-10, Week 11 win over the Cardinals, adding three yards on one carry.

Garoppolo tore apart a battered Arizona secondary in Mexico City, tossing two touchdowns to each of tight end George Kittle and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. His embarrassment of riches amongst his skill position players was on full display this evening as all of Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, and George Kittle displayed elite yards after the catch dynamism, while Aiyuk's only two receptions went for touchdowns. Furthermore, all 20 of Garoppolo's completions went to his four top offensive options in McCaffrey, Samuel, Aiyuk, and Kittle. Garoppolo rested for half of the final quarter of play with the game convincingly in hand, but the damage had already been done as he tied a career high with four touchdown passes. The surging 49ers get the stumbling Saints at home on the short week as they look to strengthen their bid for the NFC West title.

He has a quick release and a quick mind. That's a big reason why he does well on short passes and such. Give the man some credit Down field he struggles with accuracy and a not strong arm.

I think Jimmy has shown that SF needs to stick with him (not sure if they can franchise him next year) as long as they have this super bowl window open, and especially while CMC is still on the roster.

Jimmy Garoppolo is playing the best football of his career

I’ve been saying it for weeks, and after every game, it feels like Garoppolo is getting better and better. His latest installment of this career-best stretch featured the fourth career game where Garoppolo threw for four touchdowns, three of which have come against an Arizona Cardinals team that Garoppolo has played of his best games against.

One of the main areas where Garoppolo has really stood apart this year has been his efficiency and ability to execute on third down to keep the chains moving. Here were Garoppolo’s numbers on the money down in this one.

5/8

8.1 yards per attempt

2 touchdowns

0 interceptions

5 first downs

This game was also the first time in Garoppolo’s career that he has gone three consecutive games without turning the ball over. This version of Garoppolo has seen an uptick in big-time throws coincide with a regression of turnover-worthy plays, which has resulted in what appears to be a career-altering stretch for the nine-year veteran.

Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) is questionable to return in Week 13 against the Dolphins.

Garoppolo had his ankled rolled while taking a sack early in the first quarter. He left the field under his own power before heading to the medical tent. He then rode a cart into the locker room. Brock Purdy is currently under center for the 49ers. All nine of Purdy's pass attempts this year came in a Week 7 blowout at the hands of the Chiefs. Expect the 49ers to lean on their backfield if Garoppolo is unable to return.

Broken Foot. Season officially over. :(

Jimmy Garoppolo is out for the season with a broken foot.

It's a nightmare scenario for the red-hot Niners, whose Super Bowl prospects likely fade with Jimmy G's Week 13 foot injury. Garoppolo's injury comes two months after the 49ers lost Trey Lance to a season-ending ankle injury. Brock Purdy, who threw for 210 yards, two touchdowns, and a pick in relief of Garoppolo against the Dolphins, will likely start the rest of the season for San Francisco. He's worth a pickup in superflex formats based on his surrounding talent. The fantasy prospects of George Kittle and Brandon Aiyuk take a major hit with Jimmy G done for the year.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Jimmy Garoppolo (foot) could have a chance to return in "7-8 weeks."

Garoppolo avoided the Lisfranc injury, as has been speculated for a bit. That 7-8 week timetable would put Garoppolo available at around the Divisional Round or NFC Championship game, assuming they get there. The 49ers will roll with Brock Purdy and Josh Johnson for the time being, something which significantly reduces their chances of surviving long enough to get Garoppolo back on the field.

Time spans from the date of Jimmy Garoppolo's injury (potential recovery timeline is now 7-8 weeks):

Wild-card: 6 weeks
Divisional: 7 weeks
NFC title game: 8 weeks
Super Bowl: 10 weeks

Lombardi via Twitter:

Based on medical opinions I've gathered, the reported 7-8 week prognosis may be erring on side of caution for Jimmy Garoppolo. There's a chance 6 weeks is also in play if there's no Lisfranc injury/no surgery.

6 weeks would give Garoppolo a chance to return for wild-card round

Matt Barrows via Twitter after Shanahans pre-practice presser:

Kyle Shanahan says there's a "way, outside chance, late in the playoffs" that Jimmy Garoppolo can return this season. He said the 7-8-week recovery timetable cited yesterday is for Garoppolo's foot to heal not necessarily for him to return to playing football.

And Schefter:

49ers’ HC Kyle Shanahan on the status of a potential Jimmy Garoppolo return this season: “There's that way outside chance late in the playoffs. But it's just an outside chance. We're not real optimistic about that.”

He's not a good deep ball passer. Cross MIA off the list.

Nor is any team with
1. A bad OL
2. Plays in cold / rainy weather

ETA - dang, replied thinking this was the Carr topic

I’m leaving my response the same.

NYJ, make all the sense in the world
Mia, he's not better than Tua, and unless his career is over due to head injuries, I don't see Jimmy G signing on as a backup
NE, I think Mac Jones gets another year with an actual OC, which I would argue he deserves
Ten, Tannehill is better than Jimmy G.
Hou, fully expecting a QB (likely Young) at #1
Ind, I can't imagine Irsay continues with the mediocre veteran QB roulette. I think they are drafting a rookie.
Bal, could see it if Lamar leaves, but that feels unlikely.
LV, going from Carr to Jimmy G would be a step backward
NYG, I would think they'd just keep Jones, and frankly, I'd argue he's better than Jimmy G, as you don't get to take Deebo/Kittle with him.
Was, that seems like an excellent fit
TB, possibly on the table if Brady leaves
Car, makes a lot of sense here too, would imagine a new HC would want his own QB
Atl, I would think they'd aim higher or younger
NO, same as Atlanta, higher or younger
Sea, I think they'd rather just stick with Geno.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer reports the Raiders are "looking at the idea" of signing QB Jimmy Garoppolo in 2023.

The Raiders are expected to explore trade options with Derek Carr, who stepped away from the team in Week 17. With Carr likely done in Vegas, rumors of HC Josh McDaniels reuniting with an ex-Patriots quarterback — Garoppolo or Tom Brady — have been heating up. Garoppolo, 31, should come cheaper than Brady with more staying power but would be a hard sell as an upgrade on Carr. The Raiders' quarterback situation projects as one of the top storylines of the offseason.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said he "would be surprised" if QB Jimmy Garoppolo (foot) is available next week.

Garoppolo shed his walking boot and was cleared to work off the side at practice this week. While there's hope Garoppolo can return this postseason, Shanahan said there's a "better chance" he'll be available for the Super Bowl if the 49ers get there than the NFC Championship. Garoppolo would be returning as a backup to rookie Brock Purdy if he makes it back.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said he'll be "very surprised" if Jimmy Garoppolo can play in the NFC Championship game.

Garoppolo will have an X-Ray on his foot tomorrow to see how things are healing. It's possible that he could play in the Super Bowl if the 49ers advance, though it would be hard to understand why the 49ers would turn to Garoppolo cold when Brock Purdy has played as well as he has down the stretch. He'd likely come back only as a backup.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) won't be active for the team's NFC Championship game against the Eagles.

While Garoppolo won't suit up for this one, Rapoport does note that scans on his ankle were positive enough to suggest he could return to practice. He also adds that there would be "obvious risks" if Garoppolo had to play in the Super Bowl but said that his "practicing then being the backup is conceivable."

Was anyone having more fun during the SFF @ PHI game today. Every time they showed Jimmy G on the sidelines he was giggling away with someone. It looked weird.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said he doesn't see "any scenario" in which Jimmy Garoppolo returns to the team in 2023.

Shanahan told reporters he is content with going into the 2023 season with Trey Lance and Brock Purdy as his quarterbacks. Jimmy Garoppolo will likely earn a starter-level deal as a free agent, pricing the 49ers out of pursuing him even if they wanted to. Purdy playing as well as Garoppolo, if not better, during his rookie season is another strong reason for the 49ers to pass on him. Garoppolo will enter free agency at the age of 31, likely looking for a one or two-year deal to prove his worth for a bigger contract down the road.
