QB Jimmy Garoppolo, LAR (1 Viewer)

Jimmy Garoppolo (knee) has been limited during OTAs.

As expected, Garoppolo has participated during seven-on-seven drills, but he is not on the field for full-team sessions. It is a cautious approach from the 49ers, who want to avoid any chance of a setback. Garoppolo is expected to be a full-go for training camp.

Jimmy Garoppolo, making his ACL comeback, ‘threading it’ at 49ers OTAs

Richard Sherman thought he had an opportunity to make a play.

The All-Pro cornerback was playing zone defense on his customary left side of the field. New 49ers receiver Jordan Matthews was running a dig route over the middle and Sherman thought he could leave his zone to break the pass up. But it was perfectly thrown and went right by his fingertip for a completion during Tuesday’s seven-on-seven drills.

“If he throws it anywhere else, I can take it,” Sherman said after the OTA practice. “And it was just a great ball and a confident throw from him.”

The throw, of course, was made by quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who must have shaken off any rust from his ACL rehab during Monday’s practice that was closed to reporters. Garoppolo looked sharp during drills Tuesday after missing the final 13 games of last season with the devastating knee injury.

“Jim was threading it today,” said Sherman, who approached Garoppolo between drills to talk smack and let him know how close he was to making the interception.

“He got the ball right where he wanted to. Obviously he’s been limited in the things he can do. Today, he had a lot of reps and he looked really good. He was putting the ball in some risky spots – where it seem risky,” Sherman said. “(He’s making) real confident throws. He completed every single one of them. It just shows where he’s at in his progress and what he’s able to do and how hard he’s been working.”

Said Garoppolo: “It was cool. Even if it’s just a little trash talking between series or whatever it is, it’s a nice feeling to be back out there, get in the huddle with guys and look them in the eyes. It’s the little things like that.”

Garoppolo’s progress seems encouraging, though the franchise signal-caller won’t be cleared for 11-on-11 drills until training camp in late July. The play Sherman spoke of came during seven-on-sevens, where Garoppolo doesn’t have to worry about the pass rush or offensive linemen being pushed back into him.

Garoppolo was wearing a lightweight titanium brace on his left knee that doesn’t appear to be hindering his movement. He’s expected to wear it throughout the coming season. He sprayed the ball Tuesday to an array of pass catchers, including Matthews and second-round pick Deebo Samuel, throughout his limited reps.

“We’re only in the second day, obviously not doing the team stuff yet,” said Garoppolo. “The training staff and coaches have put together a nice plan and just getting the reps of seven-on-seven and seeing the defense, safeties, things like that. It’s good to be back out there and being able to see all that stuff again.

“Even being in the huddle, the seven-on-seven huddle, looking guys in the eye, a lot of funny things happen in those huddles. Someone will say something, there’s that little bit of trash talking so, it’s those little things. I was there during the season, but it just didn’t feel the same.”

Garoppolo said his knee no longer requires extensive treatment before or after practices, which is a positive sign in his recovery. His main focus during these pad-less sessions is getting back in the swing of running the offense and taking back the reins after not playing since the injury Sept. 23 in Kansas City.

The quarterback needs to regain confidence in his movements in the pocket, which can be one of the hardest parts of playing quarterback. Key to Garoppolo’s success when he first joined the 49ers in 2017 was his ability to get the ball out of his hands in the face of pressure, which will be put the test coming off the injury to his front leg.

“We have plenty of drills and things like that that we do,” Garoppolo said. “There’s not so much in planning it. It’s just reacting. I don’t know if I’m wording that right, but it’s coming along.”

Garoppolo’s also faced with the challenge of feeling good physically, but not overextending himself early in the process. He remains eager to get back, but has worked closely with the training staff to ensure he doesn’t suffer a setback before the start of the regular season.

“I think he’s handling it as well as he can,” Shanahan said. “He’s getting used to it. It’s just a long process when you recover from an ACL and he gets as much work as he can get in. I know he’d love to be out there for every rep, but he knows that he can’t, so he’s trying to make the most of his seven-on-seven and do as much work in every other aspect as he can.”

Added Garoppolo: “They’ll reel me back in from time to time. I want to go all the time, just get as many reps as I can as fast as I can. It’s just catch up at this time. They do a good job of holding me back, but at times we have our arguments.”

Some of the weaknesses (i.e. judgement) listed are because he's only started what, 10 games in the NFL? He will get better at decision making as he plays more. If he stays healthy I can see him making noticeable improvement in his overall game later this season as he gets more comfy as a starting QB in this league.
Andrew Luck got past some of those weaknesses in his rookie year. So much a veteran as G, he should not be staring down his primary target, or waiting to see his receiver to get open.

What's his current PPR start 1 QB dynasty value? Was thinking of offering someone like AR15 straight up. Too much? He would be my backup QB. His owner has multiple starting QBs & needs help elsewhere.
As a gauge of my QB situation, I'm hoping for him to supplant Rivers in my starting lineup this year with no one behind him and nothing really on the wire and I'd have a hard time turning that down. Seems like it's more than enough to land him.

I don't see the light at the end of the tunnel for the 9ers. I don't think Shanny is a good HC - evidenced by his very, very poor w-l record ( 10-22) since becoming the HC in SF. last year they were supposed to be a 10 win team, remember all the preseason hype? wrong. now we're elated to have JG back, a guy who is probably nothing more than a JAG anyways? please stop.

This team is a 6 win team at best.. with or without Joe Averageman at QB. Shanny gets fired at the end of season.

They lost their #1 QB, #2 QB, starting RB, backup RB also always dinged up and I don't know what other injuries. They're in a brutal division but managed a win against the Seahawks still and had some close games against some other decent competition. Lost to Chargers by 2, Packers by 3, Bears by 5 but were swept by the Cards, ugh.

Not saying they're going to light the league on fire but I think they're headed in the right direction and Shanny will be just fine for a few more seasons and Jimmy G should have a firm grasp on the playbook now. It will be a telling season for him.

I'm a Jimmy G owner in a league in which I have too many QB's and needs elsewhere.  My motivation is to trade any of my other QB's, not him, and I would not do it for Allen Robinson.  Not saying that Jimmy owner feels the same, but thought this perspective may be helpful.

I think Shanny comes with his share of flaws, but I also think it's worth noting he is 6-2 in Jimmy G games and 4-16 in all others.  I think he is at least in the upper third of the league when it comes to offensive design.  I think he may have too much influence over personnel (which I don't think has gone well) and may or may not care about defense though.

Thanks for keeping this on track.

I'm a Jimmy G owner in a keep 6 2-QB 12 teamer and for me the bloom is a bit off the rose.
Perhaps I'm falling victim to "what have you done for me lately," but I'm debating tossing him back and keeping Kupp or A Jones instead.

Depending on the feeding frenzy on non-protected QB's, I get it in that format.  Just for context:

34 man active roster (w/IDP), salary cap, 3 QB roster limit, start 1 QB, 7 player taxi (no positional limits)

That's where I'm keeping him and being open to moving others.  Could definitely alter course if things don't go well this year, but as I insinuated before I'm optimistic.

The Athletic's Matt Barrows reports Jimmy Garoppolo's surgically-repaired knee was "hardly noticeable" during the offseason program.

Per Barrows, it has seemed as if Garoppolo is "intent on making up for lost time." He is expected to avoid the active/PUP list to begin training camp and to practice without restrictions.

Jimmy Garoppolo (ACL) will be fully cleared for the start of 49ers training camp on Friday.

Garoppolo got some work in during minicamp but now he's ready to go full tilt. Coach Kyle Shanahan doesn't plan to use Garoppolo in San Francisco's exhibition opener against Dallas on August 10, though we could see him at some point during the Niners' preseason slate. Jimmy G should be eager to prove himself after missing most of 2018 with a torn ACL suffered in Week 3. He could be a bargain at his current 12th-round ADP.

49ers Practice Recap: Jimmy Garoppolo shines in red zone, but ends practice with interception

Excerpts:

The first-team offense was nearly perfect during a red-zone period early in practice. Jimmy Garoppolo completed four straight passes for touchdowns alternating between two of his favorite targets, slot receiver Trent Taylor and tight end George Kittle. The defense, namely Richard Sherman, was clearly frustrated with the developments.

The first Garoppolo touchdown pass went to Taylor in the back left corner of the end zone; the ball floated just over linebacker Fred Warner. Kittle found a soft spot in zone coverage and stopped at the goal line, where Garoppolo found him just before Kwon Alexander could get there. Then Taylor ran a similar route to the other side of the field for the quick score. And the four-straight scores culminated with Kittle beating reserve safety Marcell Harris on a fade route in the back right corner of the end zone.

It was easily the offense’s most productive red zone period of training camp, which could portend to growth in an area where the 49ers were worst in the NFL last season – albeit without Garoppolo for the final 13 games.

GAROPPOLO WATCH

As mentioned, Garoppolo was sharp in the red zone, which was clearly the highlight of his day. He completed 5 of his first 6 passes, and then during a move-the-ball period found Marquise Goodwin and tight end Levin Toilolo for big gains. It was enough for Garoppolo to take the next snap in victory formation in a game scenario when the team needed first downs to kill clock to seal a victory.

Garoppolo’s final pass attempt ended practice. It came early in a two-minute drill when he looked for Kittle on a short pass over the middle. Linebacker Fred Warner reached around Kittle to break up the pass, deflecting it to the far side of the field, some 15 yards, to Sherman. It was Garoppolo’s second interception in as many days after going the first eight practices without being picked.

The interception Tuesday came on a catchable pass dropped by receiver Kendrick Bourne. Wednesday’s pick might have been a case where Garoppolo tried to fit a pass into a tight window.

tossed 3 INTS in last season's opener.Lesser QB who will be benched by week 8 if not sooner. criminally overvalued.

yeah, 5 INTS in practice in week 2 of preason is ALARMING. dude's a bust of epic proportions.

Like Mahomes last year in the preseason.

It’s preseason practice.

At least he’s learning who not to throw it to

First eight practices without being picked then 5 picks in a row and THE SKY IS FALLING!!!

It's practice guys.  Neither of those two reports matter.   All that matters is he's not injured.

I’ll just copy/paste my response to this smoking hot take from the Deebo Samuel thread because someone clearly has a hard on for Jimmy G. And not the kind that you would expect with a face like Jimmy’s

And zero INTs in the next two games. And those 3 INTs came against Minnesota, one of the stronger defensees in the league and a top 5 pass defense. And his best receivers behind Kittle were a fullback (Juszczyk) and a rookie kick returner (Pettis). But I get it, I also don't let the facts get in the way of a good story. I mean, that same week, Fitzmagic threw 4 TDs and +400 yards, rushed for another TD, and beat the Saints. He's so ready for prime time that he is on the verge of losing the starting job on another Florida team to the Cards' sloppy secondamn

Nuh-uh, I’m getting massive negative points. I had him in all my practice only leagues. This guy must be trash.

Hot Sauce Guy said:
Say there fella, practice-only league? Why, that sounds like my kinda league!

How do you folks score that league, anyway?
Some people use standard scoring, all touchdowns worth 1 point, “deep” touchdowns are 4 points, a series with the 1s is also worth 1 point and TDS with the 1s are worth double. I prefer to play PPT scoring or point per tweet. Really gives the boost to rookies and guys like Davante Parker. It’s been really fun, Jakobi Meyers and D-Jax are leading the league in scoring so far. Of course, dropped passes are -4, fumbles are -10, INTs are also -10 but they double each time after the first. The best part though is that if a player ends up negative at the end of a practice day, you still get all the negative points but you get to drop him and pick up his direct back up who is significantly better.

There’s kicker scoring but it’s kind of unfair in PPT because the NFC North kickers just dominate. Believe it or not, the Bears have the top 2 kickers in that format!

Completely agree with @ESPNBooger

Jimmy G not stepping up. See that sometimes with QB initially after Left ACL Injury. If they step into their throws, put weight through that foot, knee is vulnerable if pocket collapses and someone rolls/falls into it. So they avoid it.

This tracks and honestly is something worth learning from preseason games.  He just doesn't seem to be comfortable after his injury.

Jimmy Garoppolo completed just 1-of-6 passes for zero yards and one interception in the 49ers' second preseason game Monday.

He played three series in his first game action since tearing his ACL last Week 3. Garoppolo was downright terrible in this tuneup and should have been picked off twice, as he gifted a (dropped) pick-six to the cornerback on his second possession after tossing a pick on the first series. Garoppolo had a couple passes batted at the line, one of which resulted in the interception. Garoppolo tossed five picks in a practice last week and hasn't had a strong summer by most accounts. The Niners better hope he's just knocking off the rust.
