QB Kirk Cousins, ATL (5 Viewers)

Maybe great for fantasy owners, but the bottom line for the team is anything less than a Super Bowl appearance THIS YEAR will be a huge disappointment.

You can’t give a guy this much money and be happy with a lesser W/L record than you had last year (which frankly will be hard to do).

Frankly that’s why I figured he would pick the Broncos or Jets because at least there, if he got either into the playoffs, they would see that as an improvement and a step forward.  It would essentially give him a little bit of time to get to the Super Bowl.

As a lifelong fan, who loves the Team and hates the Owner and his sycophants, of which (sadly, because his management career is tarnishing his playing career quite badly) Doug Williams is one, I can say with all certainty: "nothing to see here".

It's been a trademark of the Snyder regime since it's inception, that when things don't go their way and someone (coach, player) leaves the organization in a manner that might cast a bad light on Dan, or Vinny, or Bruce...the organization, either directly, or through it's mouthpieces (Deangelo Hall is another one) engages in a smear campaign of varying degrees of subtlety.

This fish has always stunk from the head down, and this immature crap is just a symptom of a larger problem. It's like slamming the door and screaming "f you" as your ex walks out the door, instead of being an adult and just going your separate ways.

I wish Kirk all the best, I'll be rooting for him, and I hope he has a long, succssful career. I hope he gets many opportunities on the field to prove the Redskins wrong.
I'm with you until the bolded. He can have a great career and still not "prove the Redskins wrong" If he wins a Super Bowl with the Vikings he hasn't "proved the Redskins wrong". The Redskins don't have the Vikings roster. They have the much inferior Redskins roster. For the money he can get this just wasn't a good fit for either Cousins or the Redskins anymore. Nothing wrong with that. Redskins need a lot more pieces than Cousins to win a Super Bowl, and his age plus contract demands would have prevented them from adding those pieces in time for him to win in Washington. Good luck to him in Minnesota. Hope he keeps the rest of the NFC East out of the big game. He's the perfect fit for the Vikings.

 I want to win, I'm not inclined to sign into a culture of failure, and I'm not worried about what happens if I don't reach expectations. I want to be around the best.

I think you're right about the three teams but unless there's a large difference in money I don't know how he doesn't choose the Vikings.

Alex Smith is 4 years older and is only making $4MM a year less than Cousins. Will that $4MM really allow them to build up their roster?

Cousins made around 24k per game as a rookie.

He now makes 1.7 million per game.  Wow.  Never even won a playoff game.
Why does that matter?  In his three full seasons as the Wash starter, he has consistently played very well, while his defense has been subpar each season.   There is no telling how bad the Redskins record would have been the last three years without Cousins.

No. Not at this point. That's not how building a team works. Years of poor management in all facets have crippled the Redskins enough that they aren't "just a QB away". Think of the bigger, longer,  picture.

Right. So how does Smith really make sense for their team? I guess it's nice that they're not completely tanking.

The Redskins don't seem to be thinking about the bigger, longer, picture. They signed Smith to a 4 year deal at a contract comparable to what Cousins signed for.

So, I'm not seeing the benefit of letting Cousins walk as far as building up a team. If that was the goal, they should have just let Colt McCoy and a rookie battle it out.

At least Cousins gave them some chance to win games. Alex Smith had a career year last year, and while he's always been a little underrated I dont see the Skins being anything more than a 8-8 team at best under him. I realize that was pretty much their situation with Cousins as well though - but if they added a few weapons on offense they could at least sneak in some playoff appearances.

The two contracts really aren't comparable. The skins are in a position where they can walk away from Smith. Cousins is fully guaranteed. Just looking at the per year dollars is leaving out huge details of the two contracts.

Octopus, you cant sign a guy if he doesnt want to sign with you.
Sure - I think they could have signed him before last season though. Forgetting that the discussion was more about the statement that the Skins had to let him walk so they can rebuild their roster but then went out and traded a pick and good young CB for 34 year old Alex Smith and extended him handsomely. That sounds like the opposite of rebuilding.

I like Alex Smith though and it's not impossible that he ends up being a better fit in Washington. He doesn't turn the ball over at least and he showed more ability to throw downfield last season.

Smith got $71 MM in guaranteed money - Cousins has $86 MM. So Smith got the same amount of years (3) guaranteed. People get hung up on the "fully guaranteed" language but it's only a three year deal and most QBs will get at least 2-3 years guaranteed when they sign new contracts.

Redskins signed QB Alex Smith to a four-year, $94 million extension through 2022.

He gets $71 million guaranteed.

Vikings OC John DeFilippo believes he can help Kirk Cousins be more effective in the red zone.

Washington was inconsistent at best in the red zone with Cousins under center, but his new play caller, who coordinated the Eagles' exceptional red-zone scheme last season, expects the story to be different in Minnesota. "Tighten up the package a little bit, and obviously, we need to have success running the football down there," DeFilippo said. "Those are two things we can do to help him out." Having a weapon like Kyle Rudolph to target near the end zone also will not hurt. Cousins is a quality QB1.

Cousins certainly has the weapons with the Vikings to get it done this year. Thielen, Diggs, Rudolph, Cook, the Defense to shut down the other offense.

Kirk Cousins completed 36-of-50 passes for 422 yards and three touchdowns while adding a team-leading 28 rushing yards on four carries Thursday in the Vikings’ Week 4 loss to the Rams.

Cousins lost 30 yards on four sacks. Coming off an embarrassing loss to Buffalo on their home turf, the Vikings came out firing on their first drive with Cousins completing 6-of-8 passes for 68 yards and a touchdown pass to Aldrick Robinson. Cousins followed that up with another touchdown strike to Robinson in the second quarter. Kirk’s longest completion on the night came on a 45-yard touchdown pass to Adam Thielen on a play where Cousins looked off the safety before hitting Thielen down the seam for a wide-open TD. Cousins’ night ended in disappointment when he coughed up the ball on a strip sack by John Franklin-Myers with 1:29 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Vikes haven’t been the juggernaut they were billed as going into the year, but Cousins has still been extremely productive, topping 400 yards in two of his last three outings. We’ll see what he does for an encore next week against the Eagles.

Ouside of the first couple games he hasn't been lighting it up. Now it looks like there are going to be high winds in NYC... anyone benching for a middle of the road flyer?

Kirk Cousins completed 29-of-38 passes for 342 yards and three touchdowns in the Vikings' Week 12 win over the Packers.

Cousins had his way with an injury-ravaged Packers secondary, throwing just nine incompletions. He hit Dalvin Cook and Stefon Diggs for long touchdowns, with his final one coming on a red-zone strike to Adam Thielen in the third quarter. Cousins had been under some heat after a rough three-game stretch, so it's a needed bounceback. The Vikings get a matchup with the Patriots in Week 13.

Kirk Cousins - QB -  Vikings

Kirk Cousins completed 20-of-33 passes for 208 yards and one touchdown in the Vikings' 21-7, Week 14 loss to the Seahawks on Monday night.

Cousins came up with more than a third of his passing yards on the final meaningless drive with the Vikings down 21-0. He also threw a short score to Dalvin Cook to cap it off and avoid the shutout. Cousins had 27 passing yards at halftime. His longest play of the night was a 48-yard shot to Stefon Diggs, but the Vikings later turned it over on downs that drive, failing from the two-yard line in the third quarter. Cousins also lost a fumble on a strip-sack that was returned for a touchdown late in the game. He was under pressure all night and had nowhere to go with the ball. Cousins has been held to 201 and 2018 yards the last two weeks in losses at New England and Seattle. He'll try to rebound next week at home against the Dolphins.

This happened?
Pretty sure in this thread it was commented "Cousins is making 4 million dollars more than Alex Smith, does that 4 million actually let WAS remake their roster?"

In the Minny thread there was some talk about how this was a pretty cheap deal actually, and a big of chest puffing at how he chose MIN over AZ and NYJ who had offered more money, reportedly.

So yeah, there was a bit of celebration at how "cheap" he was and how MIN was able to snag him for less than others.

Redskins have done a LOT of stupid things over the last few decades but letting Kirk walk as opposed to paying him like he was an elite franchise QB wasn’t one of them.  Now if we can just get Bruce Allen to follow Chucky to LA and fire Gruden we might get somewhere. Anyone else hoping they lose every game left for a better draft pick?

How confident are we rolling him out at home week 15? Dolphins got torched by Brady (who hasn't exactly been light it up either lately) and their top corner is questionable.
