Both in the same spot with $25 mil options after next season. That uh, doesn’t bode well for getting much for Fields.
I think it’s a bit early in his career to cast that judgement. No doubt joking aide, Lawrence is better, but Lawrence is still overrated IMO.Probably not the take-away here. lolJaguars upgrading the QB position?
I’m now wondering if the Pats are in on a move for Fields.Jones wore out his welcome. It's been rumored that the coaches and players alike didn't really love his attitude, temperament, and demeanor.Pretty incredible. For such a low price, not sure why the Patriots would give up on him.
Sometimes it's better to just absorb the sunk cost and move on. Jets are doing the same thing with Zach Wilson.Pretty incredible. For such a low price, not sure why the Patriots would give up on him.
Probably. He’s a better backup QB than CJ Beathard. The injuries to TLaw last year left them in a pinch. So what does that mean? They get him for his last year rookie deal and decline the 5th year option?
And then re-sign him next year to backup numbers?Probably. He’s a better backup QB than CJ Beathard. The injuries to TLaw last year left them in a pinch. So what does that mean? They get him for his last year rookie deal and decline the 5th year option?
No, use him cheap this year & let him go for whomever their next backup is.And then re-sign him next year to backup numbers?
Because the guys who liked him got fired. New coaches always think, if I am gonna get fired, it's with my guys.Pretty incredible. For such a low price, not sure why the Patriots would give up on him.
Hey, TLaw goes down, and Mac Jones comes in and looks great, maybe it's a nice comp pick for JAXNo, use him cheap this year & let him go for whomever their next backup is.
I would guess probably not (but at this point they are assessing every option under the sun). Reading the tea leaves, it sounds like they like Daniels but are not as sold on Maye. Connecting the dots, they would probably trade down if Williams and Daniels go 1-2. IMO, it appears as if they are hoping to get a more dynamic passer than Fields. One year of cheap Fields as an experiment would be fine, but they would have to opt in for his $25 million option now. Not sure they want to pay him that, and not sure they want him as a one year rental in a trade.I’m now wondering if the Pats are in on a move for Fields.Jones wore out his welcome. Mac was awful. Fields will still get a decent haul. Can't compare the two. That uh, doesn’t bode well for getting much for Fields.
It’s the end of a labored saga between Jones and the Patriots, one that crumbled under three different offensive coordinators in three years and a locker room that lost faith in Jones amid his handling of multiple benchings from then-coach Bill Belichick.
For the Patriots, it’s the clearest sign yet of something that’s been known — that the Patriots are looking for a new quarterback. They’re expected to be active in the free-agent market for a veteran quarterback once negotiations are allowed at noon Monday, potentially eyeing a reunion with Jacoby Brissett. A move like that would still keep the option open for them to draft a quarterback with the No. 3 pick.
For Jones, it’s a much-needed re-set after trust fractured with the Patriots. After a promising rookie season, Belichick tapped former defensive specialist Matt Patricia to run the offense, and Jones’ production cratered from there. Relationships frayed too over disagreements with the way Jones was coached and how he behaved on the field. Then last season with Bill O’Brien running the team’s offense, Jones’ performance didn’t improve. He completed 65 percent of his passes in 11 starts, while throwing 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, eventually losing his job for good to Bailey Zappe. Now he heads to Jacksonville to backup Trevor Lawrence before Jones, the No. 15 pick in 2021, becomes a free agent next year.
For many in New England, the Jones era will all be about what could have been. With Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator in 2021, Jones looked like an above average quarterback who — with the right coaching and progression — could become a top-10 one at the position. Instead, Jones got worse with each passing season, questioned the coaching he was getting, never had great weapons around him on offense and regressed so much by the end that the Patriots deemed he was unplayable.
Define what a "decent haul" is. A late third? A fourth and a sixth? Lance went for a 4th. Jones went for a 6th. Who knows what Wilson will go for (not a lot) Is Fields that much better?Mac was awful. Fields will still get a decent haul. Can't compare the two. That uh, doesn’t bode well for getting much for Fields.
They’ve both been pretty awful. Mac more so but Fields hasn’t been much to speak of.Mac was awful. Fields will still get a decent haul. Can't compare the two. That uh, doesn’t bode well for getting much for Fields.
To be fair to Mac, NE did all they could to mess him up. Different OC each season. Very few weapons. Swiss cheese of an OL. Show me a list of young QBs that excelled with that trifecta. As things got worse, so did Jones, as he tried harder to make plays but wound up only making bad decisions instead. I don't think many other QBs (young or old) would have fared much better with the the offense NE was playing with.5 QBs drafted in the top 15 in 2021. Only 1 is considered a franchise QB 3 years later. In 2020, there were only 3 QBs drafted top 15 and all (if you count Tua) are franchise QBs. It was 1 of 3 in 2019. It's a tough position to evaluate.
Mac looked like a sure thing after his first year. In the games vs MIA he took alot of hits in the pocket waiting until the last instant to make a throw, and most were accurate. I wonder if he took too many hits, became gunshy, leading to bad throws. He wasn't awful in 2021.
And then re-sign him next year to backup numbers?Probably. He’s a better backup QB than CJ Beathard. The injuries to TLaw last year left them in a pinch. So what does that mean? They get him for his last year rookie deal and decline the 5th year option?
I don’t know if any QB could have succeeded in that dreck following the GOATShocker he didn't succeed following the GOAT.
That said, he almost never looked comfortable to me and idk what the deal is with that. I can remember some spots his rookie year and maybe one here n there but geesh why are you so uncomfortable?
I don't like the landing spot for playing time but whatever.
He needs to relax, make himself at home, KISS, and a thousand other cliches suit him.
He might still have a promising career, might be a fine backup, maybe nothing but...we aren't gonna know til he gets comfy.
Pederson knows what he's doing and Mac just needs to relax and be a student. Find a beach, become one of the guys again, ...thousand cliches
Zappe had some nice moments. And then re-sign him next year to backup numbers?Probably. He’s a better backup QB than CJ Beathard. The injuries to TLaw last year left them in a pinch. So what does that mean? They get him for his last year rookie deal and decline the 5th year option?

Beathard and the other guy were fine backups in San Fran and then they weren't. I never knew what happened to them. One of them started and got 400 yards or four TDs and just oh OK this kid can play and then pfffft.Probably. He’s a better backup QB than CJ Beathard. The injuries to TLaw last year left them in a pinch. So what does that mean? They get him for his last year rookie deal and decline the 5th year option?
IMO, Zappe was an illusion. He had a few good throws / plays, but overall Jones had better numbers.Zappe had some nice moments.
I've never been a Mac Jones guy, but:That said, he almost never looked comfortable to me and idk what the deal is with that. I can remember some spots his rookie year and maybe one here n there but geesh why are you so uncomfortable?
Other than the OC's, the offensive roster didn't really change all that much across the years. They transitioned from Harris to Stevenson. They swapped out Agholor and Harry (both useless) for Thompson (useless) and Douglas (decent enough).he looked good his 1st year under McDaniels as OC, and the 2nd year they gave him Matt Patricia. Everyone agreed it was a disaster. Then in year 3, he has someone else. And they gave him a room full of spare parts on offense.
Fields has shown way more in athletic ability and improved passing last year. If we want to talk injury concerns, that's possible. They’ve both been pretty awful. Mac more so but Fields hasn’t been much to speak of.Mac was awful. Fields will still get a decent haul. Can't compare the two. That uh, doesn’t bode well for getting much for Fields.
I think if they're willing to keep him (or at least show they are) they could get a first plus.
Lots of QBs have had moments where they look comfortable on bad teams or with bad coaches.I've never been a Mac Jones guy, but:That said, he almost never looked comfortable to me and idk what the deal is with that. Why would he have looked comfortable?
He was an overrated 1st round prospect, but as a reclamation project, I think he's a much better backup than most other teams have.
This makes McDaniels looks good, and BB the GM look bad.Other than the OC's, the offensive roster didn't really change all that much across the years. They transitioned from Harris to Stevenson. They swapped out Agholor and Harry (both useless) for Thompson (useless) and Douglas (decent enough).
I don't care if we want to disparage the guy's mental makeup, I am completely ready to believe he's a jagoff.Lots of QBs have had moments where they look comfortable on bad teams or with bad coaches.
You're never gonna win with an uncomfortable quarterback or point guard in either sport.
I don't think Minshew has ever truly been uncomfortable.
I'm here. We got this. Let's go.
Tommy Cutlets had plenty of moments and that team with a garbage line and inexperienced ineffective WRs and without a decent back (when Saquan was hurt) somehow was in games.
They're leaders first and the sports set it up. The huddle, the guy who barks out the plays...they're leaders first.
People are just hanging onto Fields athleticism and hope they had when he was drafted.I think if they're willing to keep him (or at least show they are) they could get a first plus.
This is just my opinion and I don't know his market for sure, but I've gotta say that this is just massively unlikely. Nobody is spending a first for Fields. They were hoping for a second.
It's impossible, and you are right, they are hoping for a second and would jump on it. My prediction is he'll get traded for two 4th's, one this year and a conditional 4th in 2025. Feel like a conditional pick involved makes to much sense. If not then maybe just a stand alone third.I think if they're willing to keep him (or at least show they are) they could get a first plus.

Fields improved to 22nd in passer rating, 22nd in INT%, 22nd in YPA, 23rd in yards per game, 29th in completion percentage, 29th in success%, and 31st in sack%. Those were his rankings in the season he improved as a passer. Part of that is surrounding talent, coaching, and play calling. But a compelling case could be made that Fields was a Bottom 10 starting QB last season.Fields has shown way more in athletic ability and improved passing last year.
I would say there’s no chance of a first for him. I highly doubt they can even get a second. Maybe a third and a sixth. That’s my guess.Fields has shown way more in athletic ability and improved passing last year. If we want to talk injury concerns, that's possible. They’ve both been pretty awful. The only thing that could come into question is how bad Chicago plays their hand. If they make it clear they are not bringing him back in any way, then they probably don't get more than a 3rd. I think if they're willing to keep him (or at least show they are) they could get a first plus.
What would Jalen Hurts get if the Eagles were to trade him right now? My feeling is Fields is one good coaching season away from being the same as Hurts. Of course it is Chicago front office and they seem to have mismanaged this whole thing. I wouldn't settle for less than a 1st and be willing to move forward with him as my QB.I would say there’s no chance of a first for him. I highly doubt they can even get a second. This sounds a lot like teams selling a narrative. Whatever works. I'm not buying that but maybe the Bears will. It's impossible, and you are right, they are hoping for a second and would jump on it. People can believe what they want but here is latest today from Graziano/Fowler.
The idea that Chicago could get a second-round pick for Fields no longer seems likely, but it's always possible that one of these QB-needy teams will get panicky once other options fly off the board, so it behooves GM Ryan Poles to wait. Right now, the message the Bears are getting back from teams is that they don't consider Fields more of a sure thing than other potential one-year options such as Sam Darnold or Drew Lock, who wouldn't come with the fifth-year option decision that Fields' eventual team will have to make by early May.

Not that there was much doubt, but doesn’t this move lock the Pats into taking a QB with their first pick?
It makes the pick more of a premium to move if they decide not to use it for drafting a QB. They still have the same option as before they moved Mac. On paper it would appear they are going to stick and pick BUT if a team wants the pick it now costs a bit more. At least that is how I would think of it. They might be in love with Daniels or another QB or they might not. I could see a world where they move off the pick make a trade for Fields and see how the Van Pelt offense works with Justin Fields. The Patriots need a lot of pieces. Moving back would be a really good idea. Get some more picks and build the roster. The point is that nothing has changed. They have a lot of options. Not that there was much doubt, but doesn’t this move lock the Pats into taking a QB with their first pick?

Jacksonville seems like perfect landing spot for Mac Jones. Back in his hometown and if anyone can rebuild his confidence it's Doug Pederson.
