QB Malik Willis, GB (1 Viewer)

From Wyatt's article-

Callahan said Willis will have a small advantage in him knowing Tennessee's personnel and defense. "I am proud of Malik, and I am happy for him," Callahan said of Willis. "He did a nice job (for the Packers) and we're going to have our work cut out for us. They ran the ball like crazy. They did a great job, and Malik did a really nice job of taking care of the football and giving them a chance to win the football game. Excited for Malik, and hopefully we play better than they do on Sunday."

Jay Glazer is saying Willis will start next week.
Not sure how you would start anyone on GB other than Jacobs.
In a 2 QB league I’m leaning Willis over Danny Dimes. Malik has an arm and he’s got speed.
Such an arm that Tennessee refused to let him throw lol
He really does have an OMG arm. Milton I guess throws farthest but I'd probably bet $ on Richardson or Malik as getting second place if some fictitious furthest throw competition. The latter two also have that Vick way of somehow making it look effortless.

Malik's issue has been mental not athleticism- speed of game, nerves, learning the position at this elite level

Packers were going to pass a bit more last week. The center threw up on the ball was one play but social media has made it fictiously happening more often. It was just one. He said he drank a Gatorade, felt funny like it didn't go down right, went in and snapped the ball and vomited. Just one of those things. Lafleur has mentioned that they planned more, practiced more, and it just wasn't needed in the game.
The Titans have two gems on the DL, a few questionable guys that have their moments, and two ILBs that have been playing better than I've seen in decades. Those two literally go sideline to sideline. Adams is not who he once was. I wouldn't put him at the LOS anymore but they do and he's made a couple plays. Their corners have made several impressive run stops in just two weeks.

I think the Pack will have some rushing success past the questionable guys but there's also going to be plenty of wins for the Titans D. They'll have to be ok with winning a 9-6 FG battle if they do last week's gameplan.

I think Malik runs some and passes more. I think we'll know it's calculated risk like screens or quick snap n throw slants. I don't in anyway think they take the training wheels off.

As others have said, going against the top D, one with a DC that likes to get after the QB, is not when ya play Love.

During the drill videos of Love that I see on X- wow he's spry and then the next rep he cuts corners and walks not jogs. That's pain. That's not like him. He'd try and do every rep perfect. That's what we all do with still some pain and trying to work thru it.

A swollen anything is easily reinjured. If he's got pain he's got swelling and we all know this from our own injuries. I just don't think Love plays.

Wanna give me some scenario where it's late and they've got a quarter or a drive and he comes in- yeah maybe he toughs that out. I wouldn't but sports always lends to that scenario so maybe

So he struggles with everything that involves using his brain. Ha ha

30 more carries coming for Jacobs.
Really can’t see this happening. 1) this ain’t the Indy D - Malik won’t be able to keep the chains moving or control possession, 2) not sure Jacobs can hold up for another 30 carries this week. His body is already beaten up.

Its going to be an interesting week with the Vikings coming in to Lambeau next Sunday. Obviously, Love starts if he's 100% or even 90%. But what if he's about 75% and there's some increased risk of longer term injury if he tweaks the MCL again? I think the Packers would feel confident going with the back up based on what we've seen.

Seeing him do well in GB and Fields do well in Pitt…seems there are teams better for QBs than others.
Listening to Brady and Manning talk of being a young QB and what needs to happen but instead teams do this....I get frustrated. Are they not the best ever that we should listen to their wisdom? Did we not spend the last thirty years wishing for a QB as well thought out with game intelligence as them? My head went to some other QBs and I found a Brees interview and ..same stuff pretty much. It is sooo frustrating. Here's a blueprint. Ugh it drives me nuts.

Anywho, Lafleur has been only calling plays Malik ran well in practice and often times plays that suit Malik's skill set. He was near perfect yesterday at one late moment with two incompletions- a what the heck deep shot and a drop.

Arthur is only calling plays that suit Fields. It was a common topic for a week how he wouldn't let Fields throw in the middle of the field because of the safety Bates' great play.

But Levis has a right side of the line that hasn't been fixed and throws at Sauce. Why? It's so simple. Coach's ego attached to a clever offense? Why?

The thing for me has been how comfortable Fields and Willis look. They're not all panicky nervous. Why is that not seen as the obvious great thing?

It's all so frustrating.
I could be a boss guy and do it better than so many teams. Just assigning the QB coach you do this, the OC you do that. I figure half of America could. What do they need data? History? Examples? It's all readily available

Ugh

I wouldn't play him.
They can afford a loss. We always overstate a single divisional matchup and it rarely ever matters at the end of the year. Even this aspect, go 5-1 with Love then if they lose.

Until he practices a full week without that brace or brace contraption then he ain't playing. Whatever the reason for it- ok let it heal, ok let it get stronger work with the trainers....it doesn't matter just he's gotta get himself right.

Since he said he felt great and could play, to the sideline reporter, I have no doubt he tries to play this week. Football players are tough and overcome things. If I'm Lafleur I'm telling him how fortunate he is right now to be able to get an extra week's rest and how it may never happen again in his career so enjoy it while ya can

Nice start for Malik.
Guy is getting it done. Kudos to him. I did not see that coming based on the Titans stint.

He was downright awful.

Good for this kid.
Agreed all around. You love to see it.

Doesn't seem resentful at all about his time in Tennessee either.
He has nothing to resent. Nothing of revenge game made sense. They absolutely loved Malik the person where I get DMs I'm mentioning that too often.
He would have been cut by most teams because his rookie year he wasn't always capable of running the scout team.
They set him up with QB gurus (and he added at least one ) for him to develop during the off-season.
Vrabel was sincere and true when he said it was a competition with Levis and Malik did win the backup job and did get a shot before Levis last season
Rudolph was at 80+% completion rate for most of the summer and idk that any third stringers can beat that out. Theoretically Rudolph was better than Levis/starter even.
They found a team wanting his services and accepted a seventh for their third round pick(rated higher predraft) they were developing.
There was like a zillion quotes wishing him well which isn't exactly the norm around cutdown day.
They paid him millions.

What more could Malik want?

Don't draft Levis. I thought this too but if your backup can't always run the scout team then you're drafting one. That's undeniable reality.

I just don't get the negativity

Brian Flores effusive in his praise today of Matt LaFleur and what he's done with Malik Willis: "This should be talked about much more."

On Sirius they played a clip of Lafleur I couldn't hear and then said "sounds like they will keep Malik packages in and why wouldn't they and...."
Haven't seen this in Twitter.
Did anyone hear Lafleur talk of this?

Using a roster spot for a one-week stash in a 1QB Dynasty. If he solves the Vikings defense, I might just be prepared to hold long term if there's any reasonable possibility that a team will come calling to give him a fair shot at a #1 for next season.

I'm not making any direct comparisons, but there was a time when Jalen Hurts couldn't perform forward passes and sat on our league's waiver wire even after drawing an NFL start.

Won't happen, but I'll camp on Willis for this week just to see. It doesn't hurt that I'll actually be able to watch the game.

They haven't run the same offense including blocking scheme for Willis. Every talking head has mentioned how difficult that is- imagine a new coach new offense in one week's time then a bit more for two weeks/second game.

At this point, Lafleur has two offenses now and that's absurdly difficult to have to prepare for so "everyone" seems to think that he will utilize Malik throughout the rest of the season even if just enough to force defenses to have to prepare for it.

As far as this week- I think it seems like a genuine tossup wherever I read. I'm still rolling with my earlier statement that Love should enjoy the rest and heal up while he can.

Malik's had some good moments being guests on different shows and has always credited someone else with his success and continues to be an absolute gem.

The new offense stuff some are saying puts Lafleur as a front runner for coach of the year.

I was never in the dislike Hurts fan club.

I think people have to pickup Malik in dynasty and it's crazy if he's still available. (I've never been in a dynasty league without deep big rosters but ignoring the small size for this)

He's simply too good of a runner that it's a debate as to if other QBs are better than him. I don't care for a debate on this. Respectfully I'd just like to point that out.

He had like 73 yards rushing and 83 yards passing in a quarter last game. You just don't get that combo from many QBs so it's a no brainer to me that he eats up a roster spot if he's available.

The NFL is unusually loaded with young QBs and we're learning not everyone can develop QBs well and create an offense for them to succeed in. (I'd give the Titans an A for former F for latter.) So I do think if Malik continues to have some success and a starting opportunity somewhere that it would very much be reliant upon his destination and comfort there.

I don't think he's there yet. I think he's about like Dobbs last year now. A hot topic and fun to discuss. So imo there's still work to be done and opportunities to take advantage of but he'll stay in that roster spot while he does.

We have yet to see it really but I've been waiting for the mobile backup QB to replace a star since Vick. Maybe Malik gets traded to backup Lamar or Jayden or Richardson or.... I don't believe it's ever happened but I figure a guy that can run that offense the same would be huge compared to a not so mobile backup coming in. (This is not a post about Schaub)

In superflex dynasty, a must stash. I'm deeming him worthy of a look on a 1QB 24-man roster. If it's a ho-hum start vs Minnesota and Love is back for the next game, I'm probably not going to be able to hold. Limited resale value in 1QB unless he actually does develop into a top 8-10 QB for fantasy production. But with his running ability, that might actually be very attainable in any scenario where he's able to hold down a starting job. That's kind of where Hurts was before they let him throw. Then he came back the next season with an arm and new receiving weapons and was elite.

Even if he's just okay against the Vikings and doesn't factor into future games, he might have shown enough for the Packers to tell any team to buzz off if they're merely targeting him for backup duty to their mobile starter. I'm not sure any of those teams would value him more as a backup than the Packers. Maybe Colts if A-Rich gets injured again.

On the other hand, if he tears up B-Flo's D the way he did the Titans, I think there's a good chance he's competing for a starting position somewhere . Purdy and Stroud both came up empty (D Jones too). Should be a good test.

The Packers would be wise to lock him with a solid contract as a quality backup QB (if Love misses time) and then build packages that include him alongside Love to get his talent on the field with Green Bay's other multiple playmakers. I think that this is where this situation is heading

Although I an a Vikings fan and I hope nothing works out well for the Packers, this would be cool to see them use Willis like Taysom Hill if even only for a few plays a game.

For at least ten maybe twenty years, all of us have probably said that we wished some team would create some plays for some highly athletic QB. Many teams, many QBs, many years, same thoughts.
(Recent example- minutes (!!) after Milroe was drafted people were talking of at least installing a package for him.)

Malik improved significantly each year. Last year, Lafleur looked like a genius the way he created plays for Malik (with a different blocking scheme too) and Malik did pretty well as a fill-in.

How come he's not finally "that guy?"

Why aren't we discussing- like shouldn't we be- Malik stealing red zone snaps from Jordan Love?

Why did this concept sort of die as he actually did pretty well? It would make perfect sense if he flopped but he did well.

I don't see or hear any real updates on him.

It's like every other interview, a Packers player or coach mentions him working hard or somesuch but that's it.

I'm still very happy for this kid. He seems so well received that I wonder if it really is in his best interest to test free agency next year.

I've often wondered why some team doesn't try to run out two different QBs with opposing skills sets during a game. Worst case is the 20 snaps for QB2 are a disaster and you toss out the experiment. Best case it's the new version of the wildcat and the league will have no way to defend it for half a season. Russ and Fields would have been excellent for this last year. Saints tried to do it with Taysom Hill, but unless he started the game at QB he rarely threw more than once or twice a game, so it was more wildcat than dual-qb. Both QBs need to be passing threats in some sense for this to work.

Love at 1 and Malik at 2? I can see it
