QB Marcus Mariota, WAS (1 Viewer)

I do not think Mariota's college offense will hurt his pro ability. I question his upside based entirely on his combination of physical skills and personality/character.

Those same factors are why I think he has a very high floor. I see him as careful nearly to a fault. Even when he was in situations where his supporting cast clearly and utterly overwhelmed their opposition, he still played the game in a very cautious manner. That observation goes hand in hand with everything you hear about his personality, as well as what you hear from him directly in interviews. This is a guy with at least a bit of introvert in him.

Was Joe Montana a silent, bashful introvert? His wife, the former Shick law woman, Jennifer Wallace, says he is only now getting over being "afraid" of people. A veritable stranger, she had to pinch him in the butt (embarrassing him to a shade of cerise) before he would loosen up enough to complete their commercial.

Was Joe Montana a quaking-in-his-boots novice? In a game at Dallas in 1980, his second season in the pros, he actually tried to hide behind Bill Walsh so the 49er coach wouldn't send him into a terrifying blowout that the Cowboys would win 59-14.

Assuredly, JoeMontana is a nice fellow, quiet and restrained, polite and humble.

Even accompanied by the social and vivacious Jennifer, 27, a veteran trouper from her modeling days and her TV bit actress career (Mork and Mindy, Dynasty) JoeMontana looked painfully uncomfortable amid all the hullabaloo. Most public appearances are "a pain in the ###" to him, though he cooperates fully and understands their necessity. They are tolerable now only if his beloved Jen comes along.

You're playing the odds when you make these picks. Sure, there are rapists who've been good QB's. Alcoholics. Cokeheads. Mental midgets. Criminal kingpins. And yeah, introverts.

You still don't want to gamble on one of them being the next Joe Montana. And nobody was risking the #2 pick in the draft on Joe, either. :shrug:

You read the player, do the best you can to maximize the chances your pick winds up a smart one, and then you do it again with your next pick. Mariota brings a lot to the table, with very few (but easily identifiable) red flags. And again, if he gets picked by a team that's loaded with talent, I've already said that his risk aversion and lack of vocal leadership shouldn't be an issue -- and indeed may be just what the doctor ordered. The Browns ain't that team. There, his abilities would have very little to latch onto, and his liabilities would haunt them.

I still think he'd be fine, but I think there are much better ways they could build a better team, faster. I doubt Joe would succeed on that Browns team, either.

 
Kudos to Mariota and his people and mostly luck. These past few months would normally be spent discussing how awesome the top pick in the draft is but instead Mariota has stolen the headlines. There are plenty of Winston articles, but it's been Mariota discussed everywhere.

I remember Mirer, Shuler, Leaf, and Eli and ....this guy has been such a presence in the media compared to all those 2nd best QBs. Probably Elway was the last to dominate the headlines with his refusal to play for the Colts. Eli was kind of scoffed at.

Anyhow, I'll be curious if he gets more endorsements than Winston and makes more total $ despite Winston getting the higher NFL salary.

Tampa has had several Super Bowl winning QBs.Its just they all played for other teams when they did it.You mentioned Dilfer there was also Doug Willams ,and Steve Young.The Bucs just can't seem to get it together when it comes to QB.As far as Super Bowl winning QBs that were really just good game managers there have been more than a few. Greise a hall of famer but really not what I would call a super star QB (even though probably my favorite QB of all time)Plunkett,Aikman.Doug Willams,Rypien,Mcmahon.So maybe Johnson and Dilfer were not the exceptions.

 
I apologize if this has already been discussed in this thread or others but I'm wondering what everyone thinks Mariota's dynasty rookie draft value is.

So if Mariota goes to Philly and Gurley is taken with the 1.1 in my rookie draft, am I absolutely insane for considering Mariota at 1.2 over players like Cooper, Gordon, White, etc? This guy could come in right away and be a QB1 with the number of plays Philly runs, his familiarity with the offense, and his running ability.

I happen to be in a 32 team dynasty league (1QB, IDP, 4pt Passing TD's) where QB's are tough to come by considering you are competing with 15 other teams in your conference.

In your scoring system and league size, as hard as it must be to get a QB, I guess I might roll the dice on Mariota as an Eagle.

ok ... well, this makes me feel better about my train of thought. If he doesn't go to the Eagles, he drops considerably on my board but if he ends up in Philly, this is going to be an agonizing decision.

Aikman is HOF. He didn't get here by just managing games. And still that's 7 guys out of 49. That is an exception.

Oh there is more just didn't post them all.Yes Aikman is HOF as is Greise but that doesn't automatically make them superstar QBs does it? Of course we all have opinions just giving mine on why it might not be absolutely necessary to draft a QB with the 1st pick this year.I count 12 maybe a few more that I would consider better game managers than superstar QBs that have won one or more SBs. Oh if the Bucs did pick Mariota with the 1st pick I would be very happy.Not so much with the other guy.

My point was if you were down 14, Brad Johnson or Trent Dilfer weren't going to win the game for you. Those guys won bc they had HOF defenses, hence what I am calling the exception. You pretty need a great string of luck to get to the game now, or simply, a franchise QB. We all know this.

Longtime Titans beat writer Jim Wyatt joins ESPN's Sal Paolantonio in reporting the Eagles' continued interest. It sounds like Chip Kelly is going to do everything in his power to reunite with Marcus Mariota, but finding the necessary assets is going to be a steep challenge for a team with the No. 20 overall pick.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Bears have explored moving up to No. 2 overall to draft Oregon QB Marcus Mariota.

The Bears have been only lightly connected to the draft's No. 2 quarterback. With only six draft picks, the Bears probably don't have the ammo to move up. The Titans have spent Thursday trying to create the impression they won't trade down, but it can be far from ruled out.

Appearing on NFL Insiders, ESPN's Chris Mortensen expressed great skepticism that the Eagles will be able to pull off a trade for Marcus Mariota.

Mort basically said it's not happening, and colleague Bill Polian agreed. ESPN's Adam Schefter reiterated that the Browns are "not players" for Mariota. If the Titans stick to their current asking price, Mariota is going to end up competing for Tennessee's starting quarterback job with Zach Mettenberger.

Mariota (6'4/222) was the 2014 Heisman winner, finishing his three-year Ducks career as a 66.8-percent passer with a 105:14 TD-to-INT ratio. He added 29 rushing TDs and is an elite athlete for the position, running 4.52 at the Combine with a 36-inch vertical and 10-foot-1 broad jump. Mariota took just five snaps from center in 2014 and was infrequently required to make throws into tight windows or with anticipation in Oregon's spread. He does have adequate arm strength and above-average accuracy. A poised, intelligent (33 Wonderlic), high-character prospect, Mariota's career seems more likely to go the way of Russell Wilson or Cam Newton's than failed or plateauing dual-threat QBs Colin Kaepernick, RG3, and Jake Locker. If he doesn't cleanly beat out Zach Mettenberger for the Week 1 starting gig, it'll be a major disappointment for the franchise.

Two teams thought Mariota was worth at least this much. Good sign for Mariota.

 
so will mariota finally be forced to line up under center? maybe it was on FBG or somewhere else, but i think i read he hasn't done that since high school
