QB Marcus Mariota, WAS (3 Viewers)

Rotoworld:

ESPN's Ed Werder reports Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt has not decided if QB Marcus Mariota will play in the fourth preseason game.

Starters rarely play a significant role in the fourth preseason game, but the Titans may decide to get their rookie signal caller a couple more reps before the regular season. After a rocky start, Mariota has played well the last two weeks.

19/27 (70.4%) for 252 (9.3 YPA), 0 TD, 1 INT.

Pretty good for a rookie QB who can't throw into tight windows.

Has he thrown into tight windows? If so, I haven't seen it yet. He's looked pretty good nonetheless.

No but they have barely played or used Walker and Fasano just a smidge more. Everything starts and ends with Walker Gates in this offense so you "have to" believe the reports he's done well in practice at this.

Whisenhunt showed a 3 TE set in this last game(which the Steelers used well against them last year IIRC) so...yeah he's all about a predictable pass to the TE but the QB has to get it there anyway with 5000 defenders on the TE.

ETA yeah here http://smash-mouth.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Steelers-Titans-13-set-run-1-1-.jpg

Still very little movement in redraft because Tennessee's WRs (and offense in general) are perceived to be anemic, so no matter how good the QB is, people are hesitant to buy a rookie on such a team in redraft. He's probably caught some people's attention in keeper/dynasty leagues.

Undrafted in both of my redraft leagues. I'm a HUGE Oregon Duck fan and just can't see him as rosterable right now. Not yet....

K Wright is a WR1 .... TE Walker is a TE1 Sankey can catch, Hunter is decent and DHB is huge if nothing else

WR Nicks is there = you know, Justin Hunter, the great WR that never has been but we keep thinking will be ...

I'd forgotten about Nicks, and McCluster catching balls .....

Mariota has options

I think many people are underestimating the impact of running on FF stats with MM. He hasn't run much in preseason and it seems to have been discounted completely.

He doesn't look it and runs oddly slow-looking but he is very fast.

Titans didn't show a single running play designed for him in preseason but it's been discussed how they ran it in camp plenty.

I don't know how many yards you project him to have each week but zero is unrealistic.

Unlike Taylor he has the smart style of getting down or getting out of bounds rather than absorbing hits. In my ranking I have Taylor with better weapons and MM the better passer and somehow I have them next to each other so I gave MM the edge due to probability of QB getting injured with Taylor's style. Hey projections are hunches anyway

True, maybe people are overlooking his running potential. I think the Titan's pre-season approach has been basically to get him as much pocket experience as possible, which is great.

Even a little bit of running can boost a waiver-wire QB into a serviceable QB2. I'd be happy with 400 plus a couple of rushing TDs.

Rotoworld:

Titans rookie QB Marcus Mariota is expected to start the team's fourth preseason game.

Starters rarely play in the preseason finale, but coach Ken Whisenhunt apparently feels getting his rookie signal caller a couple extra meaningless snaps is necessary for his development. Mariota being on the field means the first-team offensive line and several skill position players will likely suit up as well.

Final preseason stats for Mariota:

21/30 (70%) for 326 yards (10.9 YPA), 1 TD, 1 INT (109.2 QB rating), 5 rushes for 17 yards, 2 sacks, 1 lost fumble.

I think this kid is being really underrated in redraft. I know QB is the easiest position to fill and he's in a bad offense, but he should be efficient and has some upside with his legs. For me, he's a priority QB2 if you're in a league where most teams roster a back up and I wouldn't be surprised if he produces well enough that you can plug him in as a weekly low end QB1 starter by the end of the year.

My only concern is that he may hesitate to tuck and run. He's smart and very coachable so if the Titans staff are focusing on his development as a pocket passer he may just listen to them. Limiting his rushing stats would likely take him out of contention for the top 16.

That first TD to Wright - man, that release was quick and smooth.
Too early to get that excited, but he looks good so far.

Only 3 rookie QB's in NFL history have thrown 3 TD's week 1:

Tartenton (4)

Jim Kelly (3) - at age 26

Mariota (3)

I definitely may have been wrong about what an adjustment the NFL would be for Mariota, but we have to acknowledge that this TB defense is awful. What Mariota is doing right now, in one half of football, is still VERY impressive and possibly special, he looks very comfortable out there and has a good feel for the game.

Last night's AUDIBLE broke down both Jamies Winston and Marcus Mariota and they raise a ton of questions on Mariota's game, his demeanor, and whether or not he can transition to the NFL. Teaser alert, they were pretty harsh and seem to crush him.

Sure glad I didn't listen to this garbage. These guys are always off.

Now, why didn't the bucs take this guy again???

Door #1 - Mariota

Door #2 - Trade with Philly (for loads of picks) who takes Mariota

Door #3 - A steaming pile of crap.

How are these guys allowed to stay employed at the highest level of football?

Leonard Williams is no steaming pile

lol

I love those two but yeah that's a zinger. Who was 2nd? Grayson?

There was a lot of snap N throw. I wonder if an experienced DB can't sniff that out and make them regret that.

On the block we saw some, but I still really want to see him take off running

No, he's not but he also wasn't behind door # 3. That was Stinkston. Williams wasn't on the bucs draft board. They wanted a QB. They got a steaming pile of crap because they chose poorly.

This was never more than rumor.

Rotoworld:

NFL analyst Greg Cosell said on the Midday 180 radio program that he "wasn't that impressed" by Oregon redshirt junior QB Marcus Mariota versus Stanford.

Cosell's specific complaint after watching the game against Stanford was that Mariota "doesn't throw that well." This is something we've heard before. Several days ago, CBS Sports' Rob Rang broke down the game by saying that Mariota "wasn't perfect" and that the quarterback missed multiple open receivers. "The passing windows he'll see in the NFL are much smaller," wrote Rang. While these whispers about Mariota are bound to continue to float around, Mariota is a special physical talent and it would probably take several truly awful games for his stock to drop significantly.
