I've always thought Rattler would and should get a shot. He wasn't good as a rookie, but circumstances couldn't have been much worse for him. By the time he took over, Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, and Alvin Kamara were all out. How many young QBs are succeeding without their top-3 weapons? He had 1 game early on with Olave and Kamara, and while he wasn't great, he was for them, as Olave put up 18.7, and Kamara put up 18.2, despite neither having a TD.
Personally, I want Rattler to win the job or at least start week 1.
ETA: The shutout against GB was rough, especially on a Monday Night for everyone to see, but it could just have been a blip. This QB room gives me 2024 Raiders vibes, with Rattler as Minshew, and Shough as O'Connell. Much like that Raiders team, there is fantasy value to be had here, as NO will likely be playing catchup a lot. I doubt its at QB, but Kamara/Olave both seem like guys who could be very useful, and maybe Shaheed too.
People are going to forget how good Shaheed looked last year.
I Think SFB did Shaheed some good with fans. Sincerely.
Rattler isn't scared to throw anywhere and probably can throw anywhere. He was to be very much a project or product of coaching.
It's somewhat typical for a QB to look better in year two camp. There's so much to learn and adjust to that one year makes an enormous difference. Regardless, I think ya gotta give last year's staff credit. They seem to have done some good coaching.
I'm a big Cosell fan. He liked Shough a bunch during predraft and he too was intrigued by Rattler and the coaching. So I'm guaranteed to enjoy his perspective on this and get good info by watching and listening to him.
Moore has been nicely chatty about the QBs. I've been a fan of his for years. I used to say the Boys needed to put him in when Dak was hurt and the backups struggled.
Nussmeier is their OC and his son is one of the best prospects and oh BTW goes to LSU. I understand there is a considerably large contingent that would be so happy they lose their minds if he goes to the Saints and gets coached by his dad.
But what about Shough and Rattler? In one context, sure what happens to them if Garrett is drafted. BUT what about the context that this dude clearly can teach a young guy to play QB? Moore is a former QB and youngish himself and...I'm really intrigued by the Saints QB situation.
All the best to Carr but it feeds my curiosity and interest that he retired.
I didn't mention Haener who everyone consistently says is no slouch himself.
Rattler has long had a problem of NOT doing the same mistake 2-3 times. In college, he could plan to hit a WR running a crossing pattern and be intercepted. He comes back on and sonofa gun he did it again! AFTER this, then he clearly improves- so there is clear learning- but he had like a character flaw in self blame vs fluke INT or something mental amidst that. How does a coach fix that? You're wrong you're wrong you're oh so wrong now go believe in yourself and don't do it again? The sting from the second INT; I feel that and I'm watching. I can only imagine the staff and Rattler.
Everyone seems to show the same video of Shough having a terrible game and just getting worse. Clearly no one on the Internet has ever had a bad day.
I see this competition as who makes the least mistakes, sure, but also very much about who adjusts well after they do. Moore keeps talking about the mental side of being a QB and I guess that he's referring to some of this too
