QB Spencer Rattler, NO (1 Viewer)

Rattler is going to suck if he gets starts this season...take that to the bank brohans.

Saints really need to hide him on the bench until he knows the offense backwards and forwards and can adjust to the speed of the game....and maybe improve his mid level accuracy too.

Way too many kinks to work out IMHO.

I think the fact they waited until the fifth round is telling as well. I would not expect anything this year unless they are out of the mix by end of season, then maybe he gets some reps.
well, some people were concerned about how cocky he was. hes been drafted in round 5. if that doesnt give a kick to his complacency I dont know what will.

and if he has things to work on in his game, its actually a plus that he was drafted so late. nobody puts pressure on a franchise to play a 5th round pick as a rookie. so the team can develop him in relative anonymity without any pressure to play him. if he was a first rounder people would have been screaming to start him already. if the kid has things to work on, this is something he can do without.

I think hes a nice dark horse for dynasty. but I wouldnt expect much from him until Carr leaves (or gets hurt.)

but sitting a year wont kill him. and might be good for him.

This is the only Rattler offseason news I wanted to read.

His path to playing time just got significantly more clear, and if the saints are struggling I could see a path to PT as soon as this year.

IMO they’re gonna want to know what they have.
Makes sense and I largely agree.
But, Carr is signed through 2026 and IIRC cutting him wouldn’t help. Things happen of course but if Carr can just be average I think rattler sits for two years.

They have serious cap issues looming and Carr has big dead cap hits the next two seasons. They may want to see what they have with Spencer, but they're married to Carr.

Beat me to it.

agreed. I was actually surprised they were able to sign Carr. I figured the cap situation would actually keep they away from bidding on any legit starting QB. but they found a way, but now are very tight to that cap as you just mentioned.

I think the Saints backup will largely depend on if they are any good this year, I think if they are in playoff contention, and Carr goes down for a few weeks, I think Taysom Hill is likely the QB. If its a season ending injury to Carr, or the Saints just suck, then I could see Rattler.

Granted, the 3rd dude is out battling skin cancer, but reportedly Rattler looks good with the 2s, and at this point all I want is for him to be the QB2.

That keeps the dream alive.

Spencer Rattler took all of the snaps with the second and third team during Monday’s practice.
Rattler got all of the reps with Jake Haener away from the team until Wednesday while addressing an issue related to his skin cancer. Mike Triplett of New Orleans football reports that Rattler performed well, and the 2024 fifth-round pick has gotten positive reviews since the start of camp. It’s worth noting that the 23-year-old was a highly-regarded prospect coming into college who flashed brilliance at Oklahoma and South Carolina, and while Haener has a chance to win the job and stick as a backup, Rattler has significantly more upside in his right arm

Interesting positive social media response talking like how long can they sit such a talent and yet he had a 55 PFF rating.

I am looking at both Rattler and Jordan Travis (NYJ) as a late round QB dart throws... 5th Round value 25 man roster going SF in 2026
The age old discussion on who to take a chance on late at the party ...
Previous Discussion Rattler vs Travis
Rattler has only Carr to wait for an issue (poor play or injury) --> but Haener is still listed as QB2 in NOS
But Travis has ARodgers (40 yo) and TTaylor (35) ... both long in tooth and likely easier to see IR time.

I really thought Travis was heading to Heisman / Top QB value until injury, FSU got hosed when he went down.

Just threw a dime for a TD. Going to be a stud. I hope New Orleans is dumb enough to try to stash him on their practice squad.

He still breaks down if pressure is constant and still has to chill and believe in technique at the most crucial times.
I think this is more of a high school college type prob but he still has it.
He sure looks NFL ready when the line gives him time but the QB film people are pointing out his feet get worse n worse then his throw is altered.

A lot of great positive stuff but that seems to be a big concern so I guess the Saints are going to have to figure a way to drill that out of him and make him nervous in drills to work on it

I would guess that Haener will get the first shot in the short term but if Carr is out for "weeks" that Rattler will get a shot during that time.

Yeah, Haener looked lost when he came in - I suspect he has a short leash.

I’m surprised it was Haener considering how good Rattler looked in the preseason.

Per @mikegarafolo (NFL network)

“Rookie fifth-rounder Spencer Rattler is a strong candidate to get the start in Derek Carr’s absence, sources tell me and @RapSheet.”
Why wasn’t Rattler the backup? Or did Haenor look so bad they’re just going with the rook?

Either way, the Bucs seem to have a knack for making rookies and/or backups look much better than they are.

Didn't Rattler have a good pre-season? Been hearing some hype about him lately. 5th round rookie though- decent completion and YPA on South Carolina's offense

I really like him. Hoped the Bucs would draft him.

If Hill was healthy they would stick to their plan of him learning and developing for a year or more.
Haener Hill combo and a lot of Kamara and Jamal would be fine for getting by.

Haener was fine in camp. How much longer is Hill out?
Idk that I'd change the plan.

Rattler is still a gift of a late round QB loaded with talent but he will harp on things that aren't there like throw two or three INTs to the same spot. We saw both in preseason- the talent and the mental game fixup needed.

He was an absolute gem in any interview I've ever seen. A good good kid. He's got the right humble to him and little chip on his shoulder that you don't usually get with a 5 star talent. He is sooo perfect right now as the sit n develop guy. I would be so concerned of wrecking that.

The Broncos and Chargers are up after the Bucs on their schedule and those are lesser teams. I'm not completely against cherry picking a one game start to get some tape to teach up on and some experience. Nix threw for negative yards in a half recently. Maybe matching him is a fine idea. Just be super careful about his development over anything.

It is not a talent issue with him

The Saints had a healthy O line for 2 weeks. Carr had a clean pocket, a strong running game and lots of success. The injuries on the O line have decimated this offense. If you put a kid in that needs development behind this patchwork line, it might ruin him. Of course, the fans are all clamoring for Rattler and DA is still a clueless moron, so they may start him anyway.

Haener looked like he belonged on the NFL field at the end of the KC game. He did some good things and looked confident. I would like to see him get a shot at this with a week of prep. One thing I'll say about him though, I was surprised to see him listed at 6'1", taller than Rattler. Haener looked like a tiny human out there.

None of the linemen expected back?

I think I read that Ruiz’ backup got hurt early in that game against the Chiefs.

I'm not really sure when Ruiz is getting back. McCoy had a surgery and was supposed to be out 2 months. There are a few backups that have gotten hurt as well. They have been shuffling so many players around that it's hard to keep up with who's who and where.
The line was absolutely dominant during the first two weeks (Carolina and Dallas and all) but the guys they have in now are just not good.

Although I do think Olave can't get much worse than he's been. As much as I think Carr being out brings the entire offense down a notch or two in terms of rankings/projections, it wouldn't surprise me if it did the opposite for Olave.
