QB Trey Lance, LAC (1 Viewer)

Lynch and Shanahan have made it clear that Jed has no input on the football side.

Not sure which podcaster said it very recently (I think it may have been Chris Simms, but my memory is ****), but he intimated strongly about direct knowledge that Shanahan and Lynch were 'influenced' into taking Lance against their better judgement by someone 'higher up in the organization' - whatever that means. Made me think about all the pre-draft rumors that they were set to take Mac & Cheese Jones.

I don't think Shanahan ever wanted Lance or even advocated for the move up to 3 overall. Lynch and maybe Peters made that decision. Made no sense to me to pay that price for someone who wasn't considered even close to a slam dunk.

This is the best news Lance owners could hope for. Yet another case of injury creating an opportunity for others and them seizing it. It's just an unfortunate situation that became prickly due to all the politics of the trade three years ago.

I hope Lance gets an actual opportunity and sticks it to the 49ers. I'd love it if he went to Tampa, Atlanta, or even Minnesota.
They were done with Jimmy G too don't forget. Possibly twice. This isn't the first time he didn't meet expectations.
I don't get your stick it to the Niners narrative. He's been given chances upon chances. What's he to be angry about?
You wouldn't have a chip on your shoulder if you were Lance? They basically kicked him to the curb for Purdy because of injury.

It'd be wild if Purdy comes out and stinks. It's unlikely due to the talent around him. It's still a possibility.
Wait. Lance was kicked to the curb because he was injured? Lance was injured and unavailable to play when Purdy got his opportunity.

Purdy got hurt, Lance had all summer and OTAs competing against only Sam Darnold. Didn't he have every opportunity to take the job?

How is his injury the reason he isn't the starting QB in SF right now when Purdy was also injured?

100%

I was convinced at the time they did it to swoop Fields, and were using Mac & Cheese to mindfreak the Jets from realizing their mistake in leaning Wilson. I was convinced Shanny and Lynch were pulling some 4D Jedi moves in that moment.

Yeah, I was hoping they would take Fields and praying it wasn't Mac Jones. When they took Lance, my first thought was they better be prepared for him to sit for two years.

I like Lynch as a GM. He's a very important part of setting the culture they have. But when it comes to drafting, he's overly emotional. His fixation on Soloman Thomas is an example. I never got that pick. He was a tweener and not worth 3rd overall. That spot has been a disaster for the 49ers .

Yes. We wouldn't have this conversation if Purdy didn't ball out last year.

Purdy beat the injury timeline and is ready to go. You can't consider Purdy injured when he's available W1. Come on man. Their injuries are nothing alike.

Personally, I think it's more political, and the 49ers did not want to deal with continued questions about Lance heading into the season as one of the favorites to win the SB. Imagine the stress this has on Lynch, Shanahan, Purdy, and all the players. The media loves drama. They would've milked it all season.
Are you suggesting the Niners are benching, and possibly trading a "superior QB" because they don't want to talk to the media if Lance was the #2 QB?

That Lance is better than Darnold and gives them a better chance to win games than Darnold but they're ditching him because the media would ask about him too much?

Has the media been unreasonably intrusive about Lance during TC?

Then what is "public outcry'? lol
As I said, it does put pressure on ownership to put pressure on coaches/GM.
No it doesn't. Fans care if the team wins or not. Didn't hear a single fan saying they hoped Jimmy made it back for the playoffs last year.
Again, agree to disagree.

I listened to sports radio day in and day out. The Lance coverage has been a relentless drumbeat since the day he was drafted.

But again, not a hill I need to die on. Honestly I’m happy to wash my hands of Trey Lance. I wish they’d taken Fields

Yes. And yes. When is the media not intrusive?

Sports radio is a cesspool. And good teams don't take any of that into consideration.

Purdy is amazing and will be the QB for Kyle for the next decade barring injury. He is the real deal and any doubts will be put to rest this year.

Not only are.you suggesting they would get rid of a better talent at QB, but that they are intentionally deflating his value in their attempts to get rid of him.

That does not sound reasonable...actually that doesn't even sound the least bit plausible.

I am still not sure how I feel about Purdy. He was shockingly effective last season but I still need to see him do it again.

I won't be surprised if he does prove to be the future of the Niners.

At least we got finality to this saga. It's been a weird journey. What other top 3 picks only got a handful of starts?
“The Throwin’ Samoan” Jack Thompson was the 3rd overall pick of the 1979 NFL Draft. Started 5 games his first 2 seasons with the Bengals, 0 games his final 2 seasons with them. Had 2 seasons with the Bucs after, 1 as starter, and then he was gone from the league after 6 NFL seasons.

The Lance and CMC trades have left this team paper thin
The Lance deal obviously hurt especially when you consider they could have stayed put and taken Parsons. The positive with both these deals is that they ended up being late round picks (except for the 11th overall in 2021). They are past this now and have all their picks next year. They have done a good job in FA filling in the roster, but can't argue those missed picks from the Lance deal hurt a lot.

I'm not a blind homer and I have zero apprehension about him moving forward. He just processes everything quickly and in the Shanahan offense, that's key. Plus, unlike Jimmy, he's not a coward and will throw the ball down the field.

Did Kyle just give Lance the day off to process the news that Darnold is QB2, and the media went nuts with it?

Shanahan to Lance:

"Hey take the day off, get away a little bit, clear your head some and we'll talk later in the afternoon and we'll get you back in here tomorrow"

Seems so

Kyle Shanahan acknowledges that Trey Lance not practicing today was a result of the tough conversation they had this morning. Shanahan said he told Lance to "take the day off, get away" and they felt it was the best thing for Lance.

Question for @dipandglide & @efactor

Do you think Lance is ready start and win NFL games right now?

Not last season, right now.
IMO, he could. I would love to see him get 5-6 games to show what he can do. Won't happen because of Purdy being as good as he is. He needs to stop playing scared which will take some starts. But the 49ers could overcome that while he grows.

I think SF could make the playoffs with him, no question. That doesn’t tell you a whole lot about Lance though. This is probably the most QB friendly situation the league has seen in a long time between the coaching, skill position players, and defense.
this. Throw Purdy on the Texans and it's likely he looks closer to Mills than what he resembled on paper last year.

Lance is done in SF.

Mark it down.
Called it almost a month ago. The writing had been on the wall since the day they signed Darnold.
Props again to you. You've been pounding the Purdy drum for a while. Fly the W!

I had hoped Lance could sneak in there, get some starts, do well, and push Purdy aside. Purdy being healthy wrecked any hope. I'm still surprised Darnold "beat" him out of the QB2 job. It is what it is. The recent reports that the media blew this out of proportion is par for the course. I feel bad for Lance. Get him out of there and give him a fresh start.

i'd argue it didn't hurt that much because of purdy. sure, you be glass half empty and lament at that potential lost. or you be glass half full and say if purdy turns into a 1st round-caliber long time starting qb you accomplished what you set out to do anyway. it mitigates the sting at least and you have a contender in the immediate future

Well, yeah, Purdy was huge, but I'll assume they still would have drafted him. I want the best of both worlds

What a saga. How ironic would it be if (and I am not predicting this, but would it really shock us at this point?)...

- Lance gets traded for peanuts and turns into a productive NFL starting QB for someone else at some future point; and/or

- Purdy turns back into a pumpkin this season?

Odds against both scenarios IMO, but both are also fairly non-zero likelihoods at the same time. Nutty situation for the 9ers and their fans.

Lance is great in interviews and seems like a real stand-up guy. A player easy to root for. I would love it if his career goes in the opposite direction of Steve Young's (from a zero in San Fran to hero in Tampa Bay).
Yea the niners owe us one. Make it happen.

I would love to see Trey Lance be successful in the NFL. I have nothing against the dude.

I’m just skeptical it ever happens.
He played like 12 or 13 college games at North Dakota State and then missed an entire season due to Covid. Absolutely wild they drafted him at #3 and even crazier they gave up all those picks. Every possible warning sign was there.

I’d still like Tampa to take a flier on him because he’s clearly talented but he has almost no game reps going back like 4 years now and no coach can afford to give him any. He’d be a perfect fit for a minor league that will never happen. He needs reps.

Might as well carry it out further:
• ARod goes down, ZW goes 0-9
• Darnold takes over for an inept Purdy & leads the Niners to a Super Bowl

Non-zero chance

This makes sense. I can't imagine the Niners would get much in return and they still have this season and next season with Lance on his rookie contract. They shouldn't be on a rush to get rid of him.

He will probably be inactive on most game days but he should see a lot of valuable reps on the scout team.

The Niners face a ton of reasonably to highly mobile QBs in Daniel Jones, Kyler Murray (maybe 2x), Dak Prescott, DeShaun Watson, Trevor Lawrence, Geno Smith (x2) , Jalen Hurts, Lamar Jackson & Sam Howell. Not only would Lance get the valuable practice reps against a great defense but he should be an asset to the Niners helping them prepare for so many mobile QBs. He may not be ready to be the QB2 but he can provide value to the team.

And after the way last season ended Lance seems like a great emergency QB option for the Niners. A luxury even.

Yeah, keeping him seems like the smart move.

I still have some hope for Lance but he is on a difficult career arc. His 2021 performances weren't that terrible and arguably better than anything Darnold has done on an NFL field.

I can't see him ever becoming anything in San Franciso though, he doesn't fit the Shannahan mold. He may be better served playing outside the NFL for a couple of years.

Quite possibly the worst take in this thread and that's saying a lot.

Be more cool than that with other posters here. This board is great because we try not to rip each other like this. State what you think about the player and keep the talk 100% about the player.

Agreed. I don't think those are likely scenarios but entirely within the range of reasonable possibility.

It would be amazing if Purdy can continue to be as incredibly efficient as he was last year. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a lot of Darnold this year.

And Trey Lance is young. He's still big, has a big arm and can move. By all accounts he's got a good attitude and a hard worker and is coachable. His biggest issue is he simply hasn't played enough football. With reps somewhere, that could change. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him be viable in the NFL at some point.

I think people sometimes overlook how contextual team building is. Lynch and Shanahan have a team that is LOADED and ready to win right now. The window is short for teams. This isn't the Colts who can afford to let a young QB learn. This team needs good (low mistake) QB play right now. In my opinion, that's mostly why Lance is #3.

They were in the same boat when they drafted him. For a competent front office, it was an all time bone head move. Purdy, however, is a get out of jail free card. Better to be lucky than good

Agreed it was a bad move. But by a team that's made way more great moves.

Plus pushing all the chips in with McCaffrey going into his 7th season raises the urgency even more.

No one thought this was a terrible move when they drafted him. With hindsight it was a move that has not worked out as anyone had hoped, but I still think you can justify the trade given what the perceived upside of Lance was at the time.

If you go back to the start of this thread I think it was obvious everyone saw he needed time to become a NFL caliber starter and he has shown progress by all accounts. It is probably unreasonable to expect a guy who came into the league with the expectation of needing a year, perhaps two, of development to be ready when he lost all of last year to injury.

Given the expectations when he was drafted and the events since then I don't have any real reason to change my opinion on the guys potential, for those of you that have what are you seeing that led to the change of mind?
