[Rapoport] 49ers QB Sam Darnold was named the team’s No. 2 QB, per me and @TomPelissero. He’ll be the backup to Brock Purdy to begin the season. This further puts the future of former No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance in some doubt.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports the 49ers are “exploring options for Trey Lance” after the team named Sam Darnold as it’s backup quarterback behind Brock Purdy.

It’s safe to say the start of Lance’s career hasn’t gotten off how he had hoped. The former No. 3 overall pick has appeared in just eight games since the team drafted him in 2021, and last year’s season was lost to an ankle injury in Week 2. The emergence of Brock Purdy didn’t do anything to help Lance’s development, and a lost quarterback competition to Sam Darnold has left him without any real opportunity to play in 2023. Whether or not he remains with the 49ers ahead of Week 1 is to be determined, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s playing elsewhere in the coming weeks.

I think that's a little premature. He's a 23 year old former #3 overall pick. He'll have interest as a #2 for sure. If SF weren't a Super Bowl contender, they'd probably be sticking with him over Darnold.

I'd send a late pick for Lance. He's not that expensive, maybe you get a Taysom Hill-ian player, maybe he can develop for a year or so.

Teams that make a lot of sense to me are:
Chicago (PJ Walker and Nathan Peterman are worse than Lance)
Denver (perhaps could be Payton's new toy)
Minnesota (this may be ideal)

I can see his ex-coach Mike McDaniel who must have been part of the committee that wanted to bring him in, could see Miami trading a very late pick to acquire him and just let him ride the bench. Mike White has looked terrible and I don't care what the sunken cost were, just cut him and let him go. Miami has absolutely no chance if Mike White has to start a game, he makes Teddy Bridgewater look respectable

Like I said last year, they should just trade Lance and recoup whatever draft picks they can get for him.

I think it's pretty clear that Lance is a complete and total bust at this point, but he could develop into a decent backup. I'd be very happy for him if he proves me wrong.

SF is already so good it would be scary to imagine how much better they could be if they didn't waste all those draft picks (plus the sermon pick), the rest of the league should feel pretty fortunate.

How quickly things change. Less than a year ago both of these were considered pretty contrarian takes.

No idea. Not much.

If I'm SF, maybe I try to get an O-lineman or D lineman in a trade package. Something that will pay dividends (depth wise) this year, assuming they trade him before the season.

On the other hand, David Lombardi just tweeted the Niners would save $3.8 million against the cap in a trade (waiving him would cost an additional $5.3 million). The Niners might just desperately need the cap space (Bosa?) and would be willing to trade him for anything.

I think there's a lot of coaches around the league who would like to have him if they can get him cheap. We're talking about him as a bust, which he is considering what they gave up for him, but in reality he's still a complete unknown. It's not surprising he's struggling in preseason this year. He's hardly played any football in 4 years and coming off an injury. I certainly wouldn't give up hope that he can turn it around in a new environment where he's not under the same microscope.

He made a huge mistake coming out of college when he did after only having one year of college experience. He wasn't pro ready.

As an aside, if he had stayed in school for one more year he would have actually gotten two full years of additional playing experience since that conference postponed their season in 2020 and played most of the games in the spring of 2021.

Only takes one team to have interest. So it is possible one team might take a flyer for a 3rd round pick. SF would jump on that.

Problem is Lance has only played basically one season of D2 football in the last 4 years.

And they won't get a significant trade offer. Lance hasn't shown enough on film yet to suggest he's ready to be someone's franchise QB, for reasons both in and out of his control. Shanny insisting from early on that it's Purdy's team, and bringing in not one but two veteran quarterbacks this offseason, shows a vote of no confidence in Lance. Why is any team going to give up anything significant for a player that the 49ers don't value themselves at this point? If Shanny is happy with Darnold and Allen as his 2 and 3, may as well get what he can for Lance and let the kid have a fighting chance to develop a career for himself elsewhere.

Edit - To clarify, that's not to say the 49ers didn't value him at this time last year, they most certainly did. But plans changed thanks to the emergence of Purdy. Starting Purdy when trying to compete for a Super Bowl is absolutely the right move at this time. They just can't afford to develop Lance any more while in their window. He's no longer a fit for them. It is what it is.

Yes. But George Kittle in the 5th helps. I don't know Lynch at all but he strikes me as a bottom line guy. Sure it's embarrassing to whiff on Lance. But his job is to assemble a Super Bowl roster and he's done that. My take is he's not a sunk costs guy and will move to the bigger picture.

That is true, and Purdy has performed at a high level that eases the pain a little.

But they already had a SB type roster and to continue to add to it keeps it that way for a longer window. Losing 3 first round young players is a setback even to a good roster.

This trade really has not worked out for me.
16 team league I traded my 1.15 and 2.11 to get the 1.11 to draft Trey Lance. Fields went 1.15 and St Brown went 2.11 both players I would have for sure taken at this spots had I not moved and Lance not fell to 1.15.

ETA: I'd gladly throw a day 3 (day 2 in Levis case) pick at any of them. Backup QB is important an having one with upside is a nice commodity.

I very much disagree with your assessment of Lance on all fronts. Lance (1) isn't the athlete that Hill is, (2) also is a big intangible guy, and (3) has looked better as a passer in the preseason this year than Willis ever has.

For one, I'm not a Lance "supporter" per se. I hated the trade up to #3 overall and thought they should have taken Fields when it came down to it.

The entire thing was a big clusterfock. The team had to know that after playing just one season of Division 2 football that he would have to sit for at least a year and probably 2. Plus, it seemed that Shanahan didn't really want Lance in the first place. Don't know the internals obviously, but that's the way it seemed. I really like Kyle as a coach, but thought he mishandled Lance. Getting hurt in game 2 last year and then Purdy stepping in sealed his fate in SF. Shanahan trusts Purdy and will open the offense up more this year. A level of trust he never had with Jimmy.

Lance needs to play and I think it will click if he gets game experience. He threw the ball really well against Denver the other night. I don't care if it was against scrubs (he was playing with scrubs too), the accuracy and timing were there.

I don’t see any vast conspiracy by the 49ers to deny a bright prospect success. If he coulda shown out, they’d have an easier time trading him, and would get more out of it.

He wasn't ever going to beat out Purdy no matter how well he played in camp and preseason. Purdy is Shanahans guy to run his offense for the next 10 years. Nothing was going to change that as long as Purdy recovered completely. Kyle trusts Purdy like he hasn't trusted a QB in his 7 years in SF.

Darnold is a safe backup to have. He knows his place at this point. Purdy won't be looking over his shoulder at Darnold.

Lance is way better than Brandon Allen and everyone knows it. It might be good for a laugh or endear you to some posters, but it's not even close to a fact.

He was good enough at football to be the starter over Jimmy going into last season, so there's that.

This is the best news Lance owners could hope for. Yet another case of injury creating an opportunity for others and them seizing it. It's just an unfortunate situation that became prickly due to all the politics of the trade three years ago.

I hope Lance gets an actual opportunity and sticks it to the 49ers. I'd love it if he went to Tampa, Atlanta, or even Minnesota.

Purdy is the starter because he’s a significantly better QB.

He was drafted high enough to be given the start over Jimmy. He was never better than Jimmy. He was never a capable QB, and the play calling showed it.

If he beat out Brandon Allen, he’d be the QB3 right now.

Sometimes this stuff isn’t that complicated. I’m a Niners fan. I wish it were different.
