QB Trey Lance, LAC (5 Viewers)

Your golden boy Purdy is coming back down to earth (the funny thing is he never left he's over hyped) and I'm going to laugh at you all season.
Wut

Purdy is recovering from a torn UCL

Dude won 8 straight games. Not sure what you’re taking about or why the vitriol for Purdy.

I’m not sure dude didn’t play over his skis last year either, but I saw a young passer who was remarkably good at extending plays & finding open receivers.

I didn't have vitriol for Purdy until I started reading this guys posts tbh.

Edit: I also was never impressed with any of this throws. Yac monsters carried him. I'm happy for him since he's has had some success as a late round pick but I think defenses make him look bad this year. We will see though.

Time to accept it, he's a bust, at least as starting QB in SF. Htting on picks like Purdy, Kittle, Hufanga, etc help soften the blow.

It's over, Lance fans. Maybe he catches on somewhere else, but he's done in SF IMO.

I have no idea who you are, but have fun laughing at whatever you feel like laughing at.

This clown is a troll/alias, don't feed him or he'll never leave.

Maybe you should put the phone down and not spam a thread

Maybe you should bring something to the discussion other that "I don't like him cuz Wingnut thinks he will be the starter"

Or move along. Up to you

A 4th would be an embarrassing acknowledgement of their mistaken investment. That, and, they actually may see potential development in him, but are too invested in the 'win now' that Purdy apparently provides them. The NFL with extra tape may disagree.

Fact: Shanahan doesn't give a rats butt about draft position. Yes, its not a good look if Lance is a bust, but the fact that they've hit on Purdy, Kittle, Hufanga, Warner, Greenlaw, etc, as well as the comp picks they've been given, helps soften the blow.

I wish Lance well in his future endeavors, but Purdy is the perfect QB for this team, this offense, this coach, and I believe he can and will lead the 49ers to Lombardi #6 as long as they don't lose any key pieces to injury.

Only the luck of the niners could bail them out in this manner (literally, Mr. Irrelevent). Any other team would be set back for years.
Luck? The same luck that has kept them from winning a ring since the 1994 season?

Good thing we have that luck. </sarcasm>

No, in fact He’s been abjectly terrible in practice. I’m sure they want to deal him for more, but if they start him in the preseason no one is going to offer anything.

I am not ready to write off Trey Lance as an NFL prospect because he simply has not played.....literally at all. And that is not his fault. He broke his ankle in the second game of the season.

But I have written him off ever being anything as long as he is in SF.

Purdy took and earned the job. It’s as simple as that. This is Purdy’s team. If Jimmy G never got hurt.....then we are not even talking about Purdy right now.....crazy how things like this work out.

The best thing for Lance would to be traded and given a fresh start somewhere else.

I have no dog in this fight but your first post quoted here was the most tool-ish post I have read in this forum in a long time, and it was unprovoked. Please knock it off.

If you don't like reading Wingnut's posts, then don't. No one is forcing you.

Purdy: 51% of pass yards were YAC; 6.2 YAC per completion

Mahomes: 54% of pass yards were YAC; 6.6 YAC per completion

:coffee:

Yeah I saw some stats the other day on a YT podcast and basically whoever is the SF QB, every year they are top 5ish in YAC since Kyle took over. Elite weapons, great scheme. I think Purdy is great at processing very quickly and he's a good QB for the system. They don't need hero ball.

Early reports have been Lance has been the least impressive by a good margin. He's also not getting very many reps as the 3rd stringer. Hard to envision a path to development as things stand now.

To some extent, but getting this level of production out of Purdy also demonstrates why Shanahan is one of the most valuable assets in the NFL.
I will never forget his absolute choke job in quite possibly calling the absolute worst half of football when the Falcons blew the Super Bowl.

I still can’t believe just how bad it was.

Anyway…..we will see if he is able to coach this team to the promised land in SF.

But man…..that was ****ing brutal bad and the prime example of how not to shorten a game with a 24 point lead at the half (27-3 if memory serves me correct).

Notwithstanding that choke job and even if he never wins a Super Bowl, he’s still one of the most valuable offensive minds in the league.

I don’t disagree

Eventually he’ll be a free agent. Just gets to throw a few years of his career away. Or grow, depending on your perspective.

Problem is with someone so raw is that they need good coaching and reps. It was a dream scenario for Lance being paired with Shanahan…that then turned into the worst case scenario. He gets hurt and Purdy runs the offense efficiently like Kyle likes it run. Now what? Trey gets less reps and support which essentially leaves him at day one based on his previous experience. Huge uphill battle for Trey, which will take hard work and an injury to have a turnaround story in SF. Like you said, free agency is probably his next shot barring health of those in front of him. I think Sam ends up being number two so the road is long right now.

I’d say it’s fairly safe to say that his growth has been severely limited by these early career setbacks.

Both physically and psychologically. Dude was already a bit of a project coming into the league when Shanny drafted him 3rd overall.

Unlike some, I’m not at all optimistic for Lance’s long-term prospects. For one, he’s reportedly not as fast / agile as they 49ers expected when they drafted him. That came out this last offseason (I forget from where - might have been Maioco. It was a fairly reliable source IIRC).

For another, this is his 3rd camp and he’s missing the bunnies. By a lot. And we’re not taking pads/contact - we’re talking shorts & light practice jerseys with no pressure. Year 3 he can’t be missing those.

If he gets beaten out by Darnold & Purdy? Oof.

Then there’s the potential fit for any team willing to take a chance on him as a project. Like, it has to be the right coach, with the right OC, who wants to use him like SF allegedly wanted to use him. It’s not like he was a great pocket passer in college.

Given the timeline & results, color me skeptical that Lance ever has a meaningful role as an NFL starting QB on another team. Based on history, the odds seem to be against it.

Another overhyped(Lance) FF media creation. Its like Jordan Love is going to totally win leagues on a hot air ballon.

Until they actually play a full season you have no idea how they're going to perform.

I’m a little optimistic about Love, because he was allowed (forced) to sit & learn.

But you’re right that he needs to prove it on the field.

He's just look beyond awful when he plays mostly though

49ers QBs on Day 4, best day so far for the offense:

Sam Darnold: 8-10, 3 RZ TD
Trey Lance: 5-8, 1 RZ TD
Brandon Allen: 3-5, 1 RZ TD

Darnold was in command. Stepped to throw a TD strike to 11, then rolled out for another TD to 11 on the run.

Lance was better today than Friday. Good downfield PA delivery to Kittle to open, but he missed another short throw in the red zone (sailed to Deebo Samuel) that should've been an easy TD.

Many more positives for Trey Lance out of today's 49ers practice, including:

- Great touch to Kittle 25 yards downfield
- Pre-injury acceleration on run in red zone
- Red-zone TD strike to Conley

Lance did miss another easy short throw which should've been pitch-and-catch to Deebo Samuel. And the short game carries outsized importance to any play caller — throws like that have to be essentially automatic, and Lance must develop consistency on them.

Lance actually stayed after practice to work a number of short reps to the same flat as his miss to Deebo

I see Bloom has him No. 1 in his dynasty rankings among all rookies. Not sure I’m there but I’m hopeful he will be a bargain on draft day.
Over Ja'Marr Chase ? yikes.
He said among all rookies, no?
Dez quoted a post from over two years ago. Which is funny because I seem to remember Pitts being Bloom’s #1 rookie that year (August I want to say, but I could see him going with Lance prior to that). As for what purpose that served for him to quote a post from 2021, your guess is as good as mine.

Ah, I was like Steve Buscemi in Big Lebowski there, just wandering into the middle of a conversation.

Disregard.

From what I read about yesterday, seems Lance is back in the good graces of the coaching staff.
Was he ever out of them?

I think the problem is he's simply much less NFL ready than they believed when they drafted him not that he lacked effort or is a problem child.
9ers drafting Lance never made any sense. They are in the middle of their championship window and they bring in a project QB with very little experience playing the position.

I think the more I see of this, the more the niners wanted Mac Jones and were scared off after the media trashed them for moving up that far to take him.

Again, If something were to happen to Tua, I have a feeling Lance would end up in Miami. Just a hunch.
