QB Tyler Shough, NO (1 Viewer)

Shough looked ok to me. In fact, he looked fairly good given the circumstances. I don't know what people are referring to when they said he struggled.

The stats weren't particularly good, but the INT wasn't on him and there had to be 4 or 5 drops. Eyeball-wise, Shough looked like an NFL QB. This dude is also way more athletic than people think. He's got some wheels. The worse thing Shough did was overthrow Shaheed on what would've been a TD, but there was a blitz and he wasn't able to get his feet set.

This was a long-time coming. I know Rattler has his supporters, but I've never seen anything to suggest he's a starting NFL QB. If Shough gets some help, I suspect he'll show enough for Moore to give him a shot next season.

I'm on board with this take. He didn't look like a deer in the headlights and that was the main thing I was looking for. Given the situation I thought his poise and pocket presence was excellent. Going against that TB defense when they know you're in pass desperation mode can rattle some guys.

Rattler has earned, if he wants it, about 10-15 more years in the league as a backup. He'll be one of those guys that comes into a game and you're like I was this weekend with "Teddy Bridgewater is still playing?"

What is the fascination with Spencer Rattler? I know Shough isn't an elite prospect, but he was taken over 3 rounds higher than Rattler. I even see a bunch of Saints fans online complaining about him being benched. I don't get it.

Yeah, Shough is 2 or 3 years older than the typical rookie QB, but he just turned 26, lol. QBs play forever now. If Shough is any good, he's got 10+ years left.

I'm gonna assume it's because Rattler was battling out there. Sure, he wasn't lighting it up, but he didn't have a lot of help either. Saints aren't good regardless of who they put at QB. Rattler, for the most part was keeping them competitive. And he's younger than Shough. So maybe they'd rather let Rattler season and get better? I don't see Shough being any better but he's the new staff's shiny new toy. We shall see.

Rattler, to his credit, was playing largely mistake-free football for much of the first half of the season and thus indeed keeping the team competitive, but seems like the last few games there were some cracks in the armor turnover-wise and he wasn't able to spark the offense to overcome them. I have my doubts Shough will fare any better, but right now the best thing going for him is that he's the handpicked guy and he's not Rattler.

Rattler doesn't offer much, imo. He was playing mistake free for a while because he was barely attempting real NFL passes. 6.2 ypa on 68% completion is pretty insane. He just wasn't even trying to push the ball downfield.

When he finally did try, we saw the result.

Not turning the ball over is great....if you're playing real football. There's just no upside to dinking and dunking into punts all day long but not turning it over. Not unless you have the 85 Bears or 2000 Ravens defenses (and even their QBs threw downfield more), which clearly the Saints don't.

So Rattler leaves you with a choice. Don't even try to run a real offense and just accept that you have no chance of putting together a decent offense, or try to run a real offense at which point he does start turning the ball over a ton.

Or bench him. Which they wisely, finally, chose.

This is exactly how I saw it. Rattler was simply trying not to get benched early on. It's kinda hard to blame him with Shough's cloud hanging around. Once he was forced to start making something happen (probably through coaching), the inevitable happened.

I believe Shough is a better prospect, but it might take a bit for him to get his bearings. I suspect he'll look good enough by the end of the season for them to strongly consider going with him next year.

The way I see it is, they've seen enough of Rattler to know that he's not the long term answer at QB. Shough probably isn't either but they did use a high 2nd on him and they want to give him a chance. Most likely they're going to draft a QB with their 1st next year but Shough could give them options if he steps up.

I think this is a mistake
Rattler wasn't the problem whenever I watched and I was moderately impressed. He's very talented and wasn't really always using it. He was just playing the game nicely and under control.
I saw the highlights of him struggling and yeah some was on him and some bad decisions under pressure.

I don't see how things gets better with a rookie. Does he have the rare free reign to audible whenever he wants?

Aside from here n there, Rattler was pretty consistent and you could sit there and say the Saints need this, need that, they shouldn't do this, do more of that....you had "real team" discussions.
When a rookie is in people speak like it's an expansion team and it's so different.

I'd have definitely said Shough was better off being plugged into a battle in 2026 and winning the job in camp. He'd have had the rookie year to sit and....

I don't like asking a rookie to fix many issues
