I think that’s a preposterous statement about a 23 year old. Especially since Wilson showed plenty of touch in college.

There was a reason he was selected 2nd overall.

Y’all acting like the Jets threw a dart at a board and didn’t watch a single frame of film on the dude before taking him that high.

I don’t even see how someone who’s had that little opportunity could be labeled a bust at this point.

The Jets, by most accounts, should not have been competing for a playoff spot this year. It is seemingly only in that context that Wilson is the target of so much vitriol.

It’s a lot of pressure to put on a young man who’s had little time to develop at the pro level.

I’m just saying - perspective helps here. I’d say it’s too early to know what Wilson is, and that definitive statements like this aren’t coming from a standpoint of measured analysis, but rather because the Jets are further ahead in their overall development & Wilson catches the brunt of the blame for not being there yet.

I saw quite a bit last year that looked like he has an idea of how to play football.

I’m reasonably certain he has fundamental knowledge - they said it best on the broadcast…the game is moving way too fast for him right now, and he’s got no confidence in his arm or decision making.

Those are fixable.

Again - the kid is 23. Some of the bashing is over the top.

What games last year gave you hope for Zach Wilson? Show me some highlights that weren't blown out of the water by anyone who was backing him up last year.

I just don't understand the boner over a guy who has never been good on an NFL field. It would be one thing if nobody could move this offense but literally everyone behind him, including the CFL gadget man, has been able to make the offense go. Wilson has never ever been good on the professional level.

I saw a few good plays with his legs. I saw a few good plays with his arm. Some decent rollouts.

He had confidence though. Now the dude is afraid to do anything.

I don’t have a “boner” for him, and find that projection pretty insulting. I’m just saying that 23 is pretty young to give up on a dude, especially one who’s had the rough start to his career he has.

Bolded is what you say about Brock Purdy (who's playing better than Wilson in their respective rookie years) or someone else who was never supposed to be a starter and not about the number 2 pick. What I was asking for were any plays that made you think "this guy could be the best." Every franchise qb throws at least one of those balls a season, hell every backup does. Even Daniel Jones, who is trash as well, does. Does Wilson? If so I haven't seen it in a pro game.

23 isn't young to give up on a dude. My NFL dreams died in nineth grade when it became apparent that I was never going to be taller than 5'8". Wilson's died when he stepped onto a pro field and everyone else was much better than he was. Some people have what it takes and some people don't. Zach Wilson never did.
 

Speaking Monday, Jets HC Robert Saleh told reporters that QB Zach Wilson will be inactive for Week 17 against the Seahawks.​

Saleh elaborated that QB Mike White will start not just in Week 17 but for the remainder of the season, barring injury. Joe Flacco will back him up against the Seahawks. Therefore, this marks the likely end of a highly disappointing second season for Wilson. Wilson has impressive tools and showed a penchant for making the occasional highlight throw. More importantly, though, he showed an inability to consistently execute the Jets' offense. After finishing last in EPA per play as a rookie, he ranks dead last once again this year, just behind Davis Mills and Baker Mayfield. His accuracy has also been a major concern. He finished last in completion percentage over expected as a rookie and ranks ahead of only Mayfield this season. While White doesn't have Wilson's cannon of an arm, he has proven that the Jets' offense can put up points with a quarterback who is able to consistently hit the easy throws, highlighting Wilson's shortcomings in that regard. As the No. 2 overall pick and the expected lack of a trade market, Wilson is very likely to return in 2023. However, the Jets will have a short leash with Wilson and should be expected to add quarterback competition—especially if they do not retain White, who is a free agent after the season.

That's what everybody figured. There was an almost mutiny on that club. If he was doing that, then he's done. Just...no excuse for that.

The Athletic's Jeff Howe writes the Jets don't "intend" to trade Zach Wilson as "there’s hope he can develop while learning more in a backup capacity."​

The Jets are committed to acquiring a big name at the position this year for Wilson to backup, with Howe listing Aaron Rodgers, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Derek Carr as "names to watch." Frankly it would make no sense for the Jets to shop Wilson even if they wanted him off the roster, so it's not all that surprising that this made it out there. The 2021 No. 2 overall pick has not shown anything in two seasons and will need to be rebuilt from the ground up if he's going to be a starter in the NFL.

Jets general manager Joe Douglas said Zach Wilson has a "very high ceiling."​

“Our stance on Zach hasn’t changed," Douglas said during an interview at the NFL Combine. "Zach has a very high ceiling. … When players love this game and work their tails off, they usually hit their ceiling. Still feel strongly Zach’s going to hit his.” Don't look for Jets officials to dunk on Wilson even as they seek a veteran alternative to the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 draft. Douglas said the Jets had a "fantastic" interview with free agent QB Derek Carr, who also met with the Panthers during the Combine. "He left a strong impression with everybody," Douglas said of Carr. Wilson was horrific in his sophomore season: Only Baker Mayfield had a worse completion rate over expected and only four quarterbacks had a lower EPA per drop back. Wilson is more likely to begin the 2023 season as a backup in New York than the team's starter.

He has the opportunity to be one of the Top-100 QBs in the NFL. Working under the presumption that the NFL is the best-of-the-best, he would therefore be one of the 100 best QBs in the world. High ceiling indeed!

The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt believes the Jets are likely "stuck" with Zach Wilson as their backup quarterback in 2023. ​

Wilson, a $9.6 million salary cap hit in 2023, will probably work as Aaron Rodgers' backup if or when the Jets acquire Rodgers from the Packers. "Unless another team comes in with a surprising trade offer, the Jets are stuck with Wilson," Rosenblatt said, adding that the Jets could draft a quarterback to "develop either into a long-term solution or at least as a cheaper option as a backup." "Perhaps it will serve him well to sit and learn behind Rodgers, his quarterback hero, and out of the public eye. He does have a higher ceiling than most backup quarterbacks, even if he hasn’t exactly proven that in two years." Jets head coach Robert Saleh last week said Wilson is the team's backup "as of now." “He’s our No. 2. I really still think Zach has a future in this league to be a really good quarterback. I really do," Saleh said, joining general manager Joe Douglas in offering faint praise for the former No. 2 overall draft pick.

Ive posted this in Jets thread to lukewarm reaction - but I honestly think JD believes this. If they signed Carr it was over for Wilson. Rodgers and Wilson actually have a good relationship and unlike Love, rodgers likes the kid. It gives Wilson a yr or 2 to red shirt and learn from one of the best - he still has the physical tools to succeed, he just had no business being thrown into the mix and his confidence is shattered.

If he looks good and develops over next 2 yrs I can easily see JD giving him a shot at the job on a reasonable deal or at least compete. Long time to keep Wilson in Superflex but Id keep an eye on him on the waiver wire at the end of each season.
 
Using a final roster spot on Wilson in a SF league is a worthwhile gamble to take, imo. Far better than a WR10 or TE4 that won’t see your starting lineup either.

I doubt Wilson even cares. He achieved the dream, work fourish years get 35 million. He can disappear if he wants (and has any financial acumen).

Is Flacco still there? They're gonna need a backup that can close a game here n there.

I get this loud mouth brat vibe from Wilson that I don't care for. I liked White far moreso.

Aaron and/or his presence needs to change a culture. The Jets have been bad or not good enough for a long time.

2025 is probably a bad cap year as usually happens. I have no confidence this kid will be a student that comes prepared whenever Aaron retires. The learning attitude is not obvious and it should be. He needs to go if he'll be a negative.

This is my favorite spot for Hooker. Rodgers, Flacco or Teddy or some vet, and Hooker would be a nice group.

Loud mouths can get ignored and that's what I'm afraid of. The Jets need OL and LBs and everyone to show up early and study and come prepared and....learn everything Aaron sets as an example. Ugh that guy again vibe from Wilson will mess up that whole effect.

I also think it might be best if he eats some crow and earns a spot elsewhere.

How old are you reading this? Wilson seems like a story I've read before

Not sure he will ever start another game unless he’s forced to because of injury. He should be on the waiver wire. Perhaps even in SF.

With Rodgers being 40 it’s possible Wilson has to start some games this season - I sure hope not though.

I doubt he even gets a starting gig, outside of injury, again - but learning from Rodgers isn’t the worst thing and I hope he finds his way.
 
Zach Wilson seriously doesn't seem like a bad person or somebody with a bad work ethic at all. He seems like a kid who was overmatched by the NFL. That's the story of a lot of folks. Hoping he puts it together sooner rather than later for the Jets' sake, actually.

That’s how I saw it too - he was a little overwhelmed, and seemed way out over his skis.

But from all reports he’s a hard worker, shows up on time, practices, is respectful.

There was a rumor to the contrary going around but IIRC it was quickly debunked by teammates.
