Ran a 10k in June (3 Viewers)

Absolutely NAILED tonight's workout. Started with 4 easy at 8:32 average pace. Then had 6 miles at tempo. Was shooting for low 6:50's, and ended up averaging 6:44 (6:46, 6:45, 6:49, 6:45, 6:42, and 6:35). Finished with a cool-down mile at 7:42.Couldn't have asked for a better work-out! Definite confidence builder.
Um :goodposting: for RnR Bib #s please.
Umm, I found out that my hottest one is 17. Don't wanna get banned! :bag:
 Lets see some of the other ones.
Look up my pictures (bib #1456). The chick in the sports bra next to me has RIDICULOUS abs.

That is legal in every state.

Gathered our TTT team together tonite for a practice session. Averaged 29.7 mph on the open road for a 5 mile stint. Nothing like knocking off a mile every 2 minutes. Had another good run going on the way back until a truck decided to pass us and then hit the brakes to make a lefthand turn. Ended up riding 33 and toasted the legs.

Early morning open water swim tomorrow.

Jeez. A guy's gone a week or two, and gets pretty far behind!

Some great posts...

Spent a couple days in Chicago a day or two before you fast fella's raced. First for me and the Missus. Knew you'd be racing there in a day or two...enjoyed reading the race reports of a buncha speedsters.

(As an aside - Chicago has absolutely got to be the non-stop NOISIEST @#$%^& city I've ever set foot in. Unbelievable...)

Have spent the last month, since my DWD Devil's Lake, trying to find equilibrium between properly recovering from the rigors of the Ultra...and yet still progressing my fitness for the upcoming Rainier Summit Climb. Been on the road outta Indy - Wisconsin, Chicago, Nashville (young'uns and a Titans practice!) and finally now at Base Camp for the 4-day guided program starting tomorrow - an endeavor that may find Poppa astride the summit of Mt. Rainier sometime early Monday morning...

:lmao:

Funny thing about the race is I really want to make sure I nail the swim, because after talking about my swim workouts and such here if I post a miserable time I will have to hide from this thread for a while. :sadbanana: I have much less expectations for myself with the bike and run.
But then again, if you sacrifice 30-60 seconds on the swim - still a killer time by the standards of us mortals - would that take you into the bike leg in better condition? As they say, you don't win a triathlon in the swim, but you can lose one (oh be quiet, 2Young!). I.e., giving back a bit of time on the swim could help much more on the bike and run. But you're a FBG, so we understand if you says nuts to that and totally attack the swim.
I'm gonna hit a pace and keep it. This may increase my time :10 over a "strong finish". I kept en even pace in the last pool swim and felt fine after. I expect to feel better out of an OWS because I won't be doing 24 pushoffs. This is all theoretical, though. We'll see how it goes at the real thing. It has been a long, long time since I have stepped on a field of play where I am a raw new guy.
I like the plan (not to argue with the guru). For you, its "only" a 600 yard swim. For a swim newbie, this would be a relatively tough first time swim distance, for you it'll just be a hard warm up and you should have plenty left for the bike and the run. You're being spolied with the time trial start. No washing machine thrashing to deal with. Good luck and have a blast!!!!True signs of my tri addiction: I am heading out this morning for a golf outing today and tomorrow. First, there are at least three events within driving distance this weekend that would cost less than what I am paying for golf today and thinking about this is driving me nuts. And, the bike is on the car. No matter how late I am out tonight and no matter how much I have to drink, I have gotta get a ride in. Tomorrow is a 2pm shotgun start, so I should have plenty of time and roped another tri racer to bring his rig too.

Tri-Man & Wraith, enjoy the final race of the trail series. I look forward to Woody-filled race reports. And Tri-Man, good luck in the heat for the tri. Show those kids how its done Old School.

:lmao: Speaking of heat, I'm scheduled to do my 20-miler with my running club's marathon training group tomorrow morning at 7 AM. The forecast is calling for temps at 66°F (not too bad) with 12-MPH winds, 100% humidity ( :lmao: ), and scattered t-storms. Should be fun. Not.

Thanks ...I like the Old School part! Had a few solid, shorter workouts over recent days in all disciplines, so I feel recovered from last weekend and ready for this weekend. I'm ready for an Old School, HTFU, grind-it-out run leg on Sunday. Wraith, see you in the morning!

21:45 for the 750 swim this morning. The more I practice, the slower I get. I think last nights hard effort on the bike had some lingering effects on the legs and triceps. I had to switch to backstroke just to finish.

Our temps won't drop to 66 for another 2 months. Our lows are 77 or 78 with high humidity in the morning. You can run after sun-down with lower humidity, but then you are dealing with 88 degrees at best. HTFU!!

No joke. I consider myself lucky to get in an evening workout in under 90 degrees while not getting soaked by a thunderstorm. If it hit 66 degrees I would have to consider breaking out the leg warmers and jacket.

:pickle: I was planning on getting a swim in today, but some rain is currently falling and T-Storms are in the forcast - there are worse things than taking it easy before the trail run tomorrow I suppose.

To run in under 90 degree weather at night, I have to head out after 10 pm. The upside is that in 4 months we'll have awesome running weather, while the same people complaining about warm weather will then be complaining about cold weather ;)

Anybody run in Pearl Izumi's yet? I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on a pair of THESE. I've run in Asics for as long as I can remember (20+ years), and have tried other shoes, but always come back. I think I'm ready to try something else again. These fit my "shoe-type" better than the Nimbus that I've preferred to run in, and do appear to have good reviews.

I actually really enjoy running in the cold weather. As long as the trail is clear of snow & ice I much prefer it to running outside in August.

One of my favorite runs was a 13 miler when it was about zero degrees and there was a slight dusting of snow on the ground. There was only one other nut out running at the same time (as evidenced by the footprints in the snow) and my Camelbak line actually froze solid! Good times...

How did this fall to page 4?

For the first time ever I broke the 11 min mile today  I did 3.37 in 37 mins. Granted I did not break it by much but I broke it. I feel good remembering that my one and only 5k was done in 45 mins. So I am showing improvement. It is hot as hell here though. I am dripping. Probably pushing 95 at 8:30 in the morning. :tumbleweed:

Today for the first time I tried some sprinting. I ran as fast as I could for as long as I could. I did this 3-4 times during my run. This did have me walking a little more then usual but when I was running comfortably I believe my pace was faster then usual. A lot of this is by feel as I dont have one of those garmin things.

Poppa that Mt Rainier trip looks awesome!!!! I am looking forward to some pictures.

 is right. Good job, jmcc! I had an AWESOME 20-miler this morning! Got woken up at 5 AM by the thunder, but by the time we started at 7 AM, the storms had passed, and it was just rain. But heavy run for the first few miles. Just humid for the rest.

Ended up running with a speedy little guy, and he pushed me. We ran the first ten miles in 1:19:38 (7:58 avg), and then we picked it up for the second half, doing it in 1:16:17 (7:38). Even managed to run the last mile at MP (7:15)! :excited:

Total for the run was 2:35:55 (7:48). Got home, filled the tub with cold water, dumped in two (2) 7-pound bags of ice, and then sat in it for 15 minutes. Legs were sore before, but they felt GREAT afterwards. Total 53 miles for the week. Can't wait for Chicago!!!!!!! :boxing:

Perfect example of the difference between runners and tri-athletes. The bikers wouldn't waste 2 bags of ice in the tub.

So ...two bags, right? :lol:Great runs, jmcc and gruecd!!--Race morning Cliff Notes: I met Wraith's wife, but didn't get a woody. Or, for the reading-challenged:  :rant:Full report: A verrry humid morning for the 12K trail run, and I ended up fourth in my age group, running 56:02 (around 7:30/mile). I took off comfortably, though making a few passes around the 1/2 mile point, and ended up running the first mile at 7:05. Didn't expect that! Settled in at around 7:35s and held it there pretty well. I kept close to an older guy from around mile 2 to mile 4. Another potential age grouper passed us during mile 3, but stayed in sight. I finally moved past the first guy during mile 5, then was able to re-pass the other guy during mile 6. Took it home semi-comfortably from there. Felt good about the racing aspects. Afterwards, I was pleased to meet Mrs. Wraith and the two little Wraiths. As always, good to see Wraith as well!!

Well, I finished my first tri. My totals were slower than what I thought in every event, sadly.

Full story:

Finished the swim in 10:08. Initially I was disappointed, but now am pretty pleased. I ranked #6 in my AG here. In my age group (largest group - male 34-39) in 2007 the #6 guy was 9:02. In 2008 the #6 was 8:52. They changed the course this year and the times were much slower, overall. I think the course was long and I hit somewhere close to the 9:00 I was expecting. I was seeded way too far back. I passed 40 people, at least. I felt like the nut on the highway weaving in and out crossing 4 lanes at a time.

Bike: Disaster. In transition running my bike out I either got hit or just screwed up, but I dropped my bike. When I get over the mount line I find that I threw the chain. I spent 1:10 fixing that (great). Once I get out on the course it becomes evident that my derailleur is hosed - I was only getting 5 of 9 gears in the back. Spin out is at 23-24 mph (i.e. just enough gear to keep me going). I end up doing my best Lance imitation and go the whole time at 90-120rpm. I'm not used to that, for sure, though I have (thank goodness) done a good bit of interval training with high spin work. Course was nice, though. Official average speed - 20.8mph. The time I am counting after subtracting the mechanical time - 21.6mph. This put me in the top 20% of my AG. I think I left a good bit on the table. 22 was very achievable. I certainly did evil things to my legs by having to ride the way I did.

Run: Well, I finished! Ran 26:59, so I officially beat a 9 minute mile by :01. Seriously, though, my legs were just toast. The bike leg really stressed muscles that I hadn't used like that before. Given the circumstances, though, I can't really be too unhappy with the run. Serious HTFU here.

Overall: 1:26:39, good for 30th out of 80 in the AG. Removing the minute for getting my chain back on would have bumped me a couple spots, not much. I was probably the most concerned at the start about the bike leg. In the swim I know what I can do and in the run I know what I couldn't. The bike was somewhat unknown and almost hitting 22mph despite the mechanical issues ain't all that bad. Gotta be pretty pleased with that after picking up the bike 7 months ago from complete scratch. All in all not a bad showing.

SRD for me, so I'll probably just watch the Brewers and try to get going on my fantasy football prep! This week is a recovery week in my schedule, so nothing too taxing coming up. Long run this coming week is only 14 miles.

GREAT job in the tri, Sand!!!

Olympic tri update: Pretty (eta: very) satisfied for gutting out a steady 2:58:23 race with a 54:16 10K (8:43/mi) leg at the end. eta: Results in already, and I finished 6 of 22 in my age group! Only seven of us were under 3:10 ...lotta ugly run times out there. I added my placing below.

Hot, humid...and oh, yeah, windy. Wind made the water choppy for the swim and added a tough element for the bike. Then the heat took over to make it rather brutal on the run (~ 90 degrees; 65% humidity). It was a new out-and-back run course with a lot of rolling terrain and hills.

The swim went OK ...didn't have to fight much traffic, but did have the choppy water and I probably swung the swim turnaround too wide and added a bit of distance. One experienced triathlete (Ironman; I had nudged him out at the 12K yesterday, and he was setting up today's transition/finish area) thought the course was long. I kept the bike steady and averaged around 19 mph on my 'old school' Fuji bike - 'bout as good as I could hope/expect on that bike and in the winds. Felt like I was really baby-stepping at the start of the run, but kept moving. Kept running throughout the first half; on the return, I'd walk a bit at the top of each rise/hill (I ran up them all - my little HTFU) and took a few other walk breaks through the return, then pushed in the last 1/2 mile with a solid finish (camera time!).

Splits (only one or two T1/T2 under 1:30, 2Young!):

Swim: 40:21 (9th of 22)

T1: 3:05 (11th)

Bike: 1:18:08 (11th)

T2: 2:35 (13th; lost time looking for my hat, which disappeared :hot: )

Run: 54:16 (5th)

Can't wait for pics ...gotta couple of numbers to scope out for your viewing pleasure. But right now, my insides feel all chewed up. Muscles are OK - today was about pure endurance, and keeping the heart rate under control (and the heart pumping). Feeling very happy, though, with the solid AG placings throughout. The gap up or down one spot was 5-6 minutes either way. I usually lag more on the swim and a lot more on the bike. I had hoped to do well in the run, and did. Only six of us came in under an hour for the run. :excited: :X :banned:

I've been catching up on this thread for a bit and it is nice to see so many people out there running. Its a bit surprising to me considering I live in an area with tons of awesome trails and it is a rare occurance to see another person out running. I just got back into running a little over two weeks ago, after over a year off. Just over a year ago I hit my 5k PR of 18:17, and shortly after that broke my foot. After almost no cardio work in that entire year, I struggled to run a mile my first day back. I was really surprised how far I had fallen. Yesterday I went for a run with a friend and went 3.5 miles, in a time of 32 mins. While I know I have a lot of ground to make up on my time, I was very happy that I was able to handle the distance. My current plan is to run a 5k on September 19th. I realize my times will not be what they could with more training but my goal is to make it under 24:00 by that time. I will continue to update my progress and I am looking forward to reading everyone elses as well.

Welcome Hipster (sounds better than using Doofus...that'll probably come as we get used to you :coffee: ). That's an excellent 5K time ...you'll get back to it soon enough.Sand, the tri was in Wauconda, IL - Bang's Lake Triathlon. It was small ...maybe 400 people? But that's fine with me, since it makes for very easy logistics.

Catching up from the weekend and  to tri-man. Amazing ability to do (and recover from) events on back to back days in misrable heat, WOW. We'll work on your transitions ;)

Sand, awesome triathlon, triathlete. Don't sweat the bike, it was not a disaster, it was something to learn from for the next one. Hopefully you'll get a chance tomorrow for someone to ask you what you did this weekend? Being able to answer "a triathlon, you", it pretty darn cool.

eta, forgot to add an update. I ate and drank too much and slept too little this weekend. I did get a ride in, but it was ill fated. On the way back on an out and back ride to shake off some booze from the night before it started to pour (shocking). Going downhill at right about 30 mph and trailing a buddy of mine I missed seeing some broken glass and blew both tires. Lucky for me, I think, the rear tire went fast but the front went slow, so I was able to keep upright and brake to a stop. I carry one tube and a pump, but not a second tube (I mean, c'mon) so my buddy rode back and got my car while I got soaked. Any recomendations out there for new tires? (the ones I had less than 600 miles on them  )

Happy to bring you all another episode of Where Did You Run Today? Couldn't run until this afternoon and it's in the mid-90s here, so I headed to Pt. Reyes National Seashore and ran 13 miles on the trails out there to and along the ocean. It was still hot, probably mid-80s, but cooler than it was here 25 miles inland. Tough running in that heat, and I'm wondering if I'm still not fully recovered from the marathon. The heat took it out of me, literally - I drank a bottle of water on the way there, 3 bottles of Heed while running, and a bottle of Endurox on the way home, haven't peed since right before I started - and weighed in at 5 lbs lighter than when I woke up today! The final 2 miles back to the trailhead is pretty much downhill, and I was coasting along at just over 9:00 miles for that stretch and I still couldn't get my HR below about 90% (168 bpm or so), and after 20 minutes of cooling off and stretching, my HR was still above 120, which is really unusual. Pretty gassed and dehydrated, I guess, but I feel pretty good.

Great job and congrats to Sand and tri-man, impressive efforts both!

And the new blood just keeps on entering the thread, that's great to see as well. Of course it just means yet another guy here that's faster than me!

There. Went out and did tomorrow's 8-miler tonight. I'm busy tomorrow night, so this way I don't have to get up at stupid o'clock tomorrow morning to do my run. Not that hot outside (70's), but it's humid as hell (93%), so my shorts were absolutely soaked by the time I finished running. Nice, I know.

On a more positive note, the additional 8 miles brought me to 61 miles for the week (Monday thru Sunday), which I think is a personal best for me. Much fewer miles this week during the recovery week.

A great run by Tri-man - a couple of ringers showed up for the 12k that hadn't run the previous races, otherwise his woody would have been in his hand at the end of the race for sure. As it stands, I'm pretty sure he took a top spot overall for the series. My race was pretty good, especially considering the dreaded humidity. Stuck to 8:20's for the first 4 miles and felt pretty good. The next mile finished with a lot of uphill and it kind of took the wind out of me a bit (HR ave was 186). The last mile I was able to pick things back up and finished by passing a guy I'd been trailing for a while - overall 1:01:14. The best part (just narrowly beating out seeing Tri-man again) was having my wife & kids surprise me at the finish. I was striding hard the last 100 yds and focused on the finish line when I heard little voices cheering "Go Daddy!" Awesome. If I hadn't been light headed for about 5 minutes afterwards it would have been even better! Since my weekend run was "only" 7 miles I decided to get the bike out today and rode for about an hour. Only averaged 17mph but worked pretty hard. The last few miles my hammy's were screaming, especially my right leg. When I got home I took gruecd's advice and climbed into an ice tub for about 15 minutes. Not sure yet if it helped but it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

Great updates everyone!

Yesterday's long run called for 11 total miles....6 easy and the last 5 miles at race-pace plus 30 sec/mile. I did 6 @ 10:00, 3 @ 8:27, and 2 @ 8:00. I felt like I could have pushed a bit harder but remembered the advice from this board. I have a tough run planned for Tuesday and didn't want this long run to jeopardize it. Legs feel great today!

Crap. Just heard that a woman died during the swim today at the local triathlon. That sucks.
It does, but every time I read these it seems the race folks are right there. In this case she never went under. Don't know why these heart attacks (I assume that is what it was) tend to happen on the swim, but they do. In my race you could have practically jumped from kayak to kayak. Tons of safety personnel everywhere.BTW, thanks for the kind notes on the race. Gonna see about fixing my bike today. It should be pretty straightforward and it actually is good timing since I will be up in Maine for the next couple days. I am hoping to find a good running trail to hit. I've heard the coast is beautiful up there.

Great tri's Sand and Tri-Man!!!! I love tri-stories, as you have five major chances for error/achievement  Both of you handled the trials and tribulations well.

Hipster, welcome to the 10k thread!

Duck: thanks for posting pic's

Gruecd: Great 20 miler and holy high mileage Batman!

2Young: I can't speak for them yet as I just put these on my bike last night.

My update:

We ended up having 2 of our daughter's friends over for a sleepover Friday night. One of them (age 6) had lots of trouble sleeping = it was a very long night. I canceled my planned bike ride for Saturday morning (planned on leaving at 6 am), as it just wasn't going to happen.

Sunday I got in a 10 miler. It was 86 and humid at the start, and 91 when I finished. I again kept my pace really slow and consistent throughout, while drinking lots of water. My HR escalated pretty high the last two miles, as it averaged 179 and 178 for the final two. My legs still feel pretty good today amazingly.

I rode my bike into work this morning (11 miles) and will get a 15 miler in going home. I somehow have to find some time to get some base mileage in, if I'm going to ride with Culdeus in HH100 in less than 3 weeks.

Sand, I was just along the coastal area back in late June. I think it's route 1 that weaves along the coast and through the towns. I don't recall running trails, but you can certainly pick out some nice roads. You might be able to ask around about trails, though. We stayed overnight in Bath (great blue-roofed seafood restaurant right on the river). I ran along the roads outside of town, but that was nothing too special. Exiting route 1 to the beach area of Kennebunkport is very nice viewing. Careful, though - that road gets busy and can move slowly. The main interstate is actually a nice drive - it's all forested on either side.

I was up that way a couple of years back. Watch out for moose.

I'll be in Biddeford (close to Kennebunkport). I'm sure there's something around. And I'll watch out for moose and squirrel. Thanks for the heads up on these dangerous beasts.

They can be vicious!

They DO have some 'beware of moose' signs at spots along the highway (none for squirrels). Up around Moosehead Lake much further north, where we visited friends, they have numerous signs because they have a LOT of moose. Beautiful area up there.
