Ran a 10k in June (6 Viewers)

Too many replies to my question(s) to include all of your quotes (thanks for the responses!)

I think the Garmin 305 is a little out of my price range at the moment. The 405 that was linked in here for $170 looks like something I can manage. I don't think I'll have it in time for my 5k coming up next week though. :(

I do plan on having my ipod with me on race day. I won't have to worry about automobile traffice that day, and I like beer's method of turning on the music only when I need that extra motivation or get bored.

I hit 1.5 miles outside this morning (uneven path)... after a full hour of hitting the weights (today was also leg day)... came in at 12:40 which I'm happy with, but I'm not sure I could do another 1.6 at that pace.

Has anyone ever dealt with an ear ache when running out in the cold? I don't always get this, but it happens often enough (and not just from running, but even when I play other sports out in the cold)... weird.

11 days away from the race! :excited:

You shouldn't need more than 1 day of rest - some go for a light jog to loosen up the legs and others take it off. Personally, I go really hard the Wednesday before a Saturday 5k (if possible I'll time myself on the course), dial it back Thursday (4-5 miles at 75%), and just go for a short + light jog and do a short core workout the day before.
I think this should be experience/fitness driven. Someone just starting out probably can't do this, but a well seasoned runner would have no problem with it. Being it's his 2nd ever 5K, I'd err on the side of caution and run a few moderate runs this wekk and then take the day before completely off.
True, this would probably be better for someone on 5k #2

Lots of new faces coming in here daily. Welcome all and stick with it. It can get tough at times, but the rewards are well worth it. You won't find too many places like this one in both sarcasm and motivation to keep it going.

Sand - I believe that miniChad ended up doing the Arizona Rock N' Roll Marathon. I think my notebook is correct on that one.

------------

Did 5 really hilly miles yesterday. Even after running 12 on Sunday the legs felt pretty good and it was a good run overalll.

Felt pretty fresh still today and did 8 miles with 3 Tempo miles in the middle. 7:27, 7:23, adn 7:43. Last one was going up a bridge, but my legs were getting cooked by the end of the third mile and I could not sustain the pace. Felt good to finish the last three and consider it back on the right path to another cycle.

Have a great day all.

And I'm sure this has probably been covered in this thread, but we're talking 600 pages  ... but do many of you guys listen to music while you run?
99% of my runs are outside, even in the heart of winter, and I always have music - it keeps me focused. More dangerous? Yea, but I think the reward outweighs the risk. My times are noticably slower when I run without music.
Thankfully I run on pretty low traffic roads and in neighborhoods.I generally wear earbuds and only have one in anyway (the one away from the road) so that I do hear whats going on in the road as much as I can and still enjoy the music. Much of the time Im so zoned out on the running I don't even know what is playing.
I don't but thankfully my neighborhood is 99% sidewalks, just have to stay alert at intersections. I have a good idea how long most of my songs are and I have different playlists for different routes so I use it as a measure for my pace. Usually start off with a song that builds, follow it up with a couple more higher intensity songs to keep me going, dial it back a bit once I hit cruising speed until the final stretch, then finish with something really strong. The more I am yelled at the faster I run. That said, I noticed now that I've started including more tempo runs in the last week that I've been able to diversify the songs I listen to more as my pace isn't just 'go' for all runs anymore, so thanks guys for that.

Thanks for the link. I'll make sure to read all that when I have time and before I pull the trigger.

GPS discussion -- I'm a fan of the Garmin 305. I know it looks super dorky, but I don't really care. I'm over 40 and married. I'm not picking up chicks! I like the big screen and the HRM strap.
Yeah, I'm replacing a 305 and was satisfied with it before the battery became unpredictable. With the rapid change in technology, I guess I just can't get past replacing a watch I got in late 2008 with the same model!

Wow....price popped up. I think I got mine for $140ish. These things go on sale here and there on amazon. If you have a little time, you may want to see if it goes on sale in the next few weeks. But if the 405 has everything you want, then just get it and enjoy!

I'll keep checking. I'm not in too much of a hurry either. To be honest, I'm not really sure what I want yet, lol... I'll just compare a few of them and see what features I see myself using and go from there. I don't think I'll ever get to doing a tri-athalon especially since I'm a lousy swimmer, but I do mountain bike on occasion so being able to use it for that would be cool too.

lolbeen eyeing it for about 7 months....was steady at 234 and now holding steady at 279One day it dropped to 159...but the listing turned out to be an error as the $159 GPS's were "refurbished".I bought mine used from craiglist for $100 a few months ago, but still check amazon every other day or so

I had bought my used GPS for $100 off criagslist and kept looking for a new one. When I saw it at $159/amamzon I jumped on it.

The refurbished arrived at my house and i ended up sending it back.

If I didn't have the old one I might have kept it.

It was sold from a 3rd party via Amazon, and the guy I was in contact with said it still has a 1 year warranty, and he was very cool about the whole process.

If you are into buying things refurbished to save some $ here is the direct link to the website.

I admit, it looked brand new when I received it.

It just wasn't in a "Garmin" box and had a refurbished sticker on the box, otherwise I would have never known.

Holy crap the price on the 305 went up. It's $289 on Amazon and I got it 6 mos ago on Amazon for $140. I have no clue why that would happen. The 305 does it's job well but it's been around for a while and is big and clunky. I would be looking for something newer around $150. I wouldn't pay more than $150 for a 305.

I think it's a simple supply/demand issue. I'm willing to bet demand has gone up with the various issues they've had with the newer models. 305 is old technology, but is probably their most reliable.

I get ear aches when it's cold and there's a cross-wind into my ear. The solution is to make sure your ears are covered with something windproof. ____________________I still love my 305. Like Ned said, the technology is tried and true, and it was a steal back when I bought it. Kind of crazy to see it that expensive now. Got in a really nice tempo run in the late morning (8 w/ 4 @ LT). Granted, this shouldn't have been a back-breaking workout since I was doing 10/6 as recently as six weeks ago, but I wasn't sure what to expect since I hadn't run hard since my half and since it was up in the low 80s when I got started. Fortunately, I was still able to bang out the four tempo miles at a good pace for me (7:37 avg). I need to make sure to do these runs earlier in the morning though -- I was starting to feel a little pukey toward the end.

Followed up the intervals this morning with a nice swim.

Ok, not really a fitness swim.

more like watching a 7 year old and 4 year old splash around for a bit while eyeing some nice eye candy...going to have to go more often if that is the type of talent we are pulling during the week these days in the neighborhood. Somebody got them a new "nanny" or something with the one. Very nice. Have to get some sneaky cell phone footage next time.

Got it. I'll keep my eyes peeled on that 305, but I'm not sure I'll need all those widgets. Seems like most of you guys like it though and it sounds reliable.

That is what is so cool about them. You may not need all the widgets while you are running, but with Garmin Connect, TrainingPeaks and other sources you can easily upload your run and see all kinds of data to further analyze things. As the years go by, I am going on my third and in some cases fourth running of certain events. Its so awesome to look at one compared to the other. Again, short term it might not seem worthwhile, but long term there are huge benefits.

I've seen the 305 in the 120's and the 405 in the 130-150 range back around Christmas.

Personally I'm a Suunto fan. It's basically a real watch, a separate gps pod, and a strap.

Downside - Cost (although used on e-bay can be found at a great price), the extra pod.

Positives - Holds a ton of data (2 hr = 15% of memomry), has a hr memory belt option that will hold 100 workouts (100k heart beats), doesn't need to be re-charged, just swap the 2 aaa every couple 2-4 weeks, wear it all the time as a watch.

6.25 miles today with 5.75 of that at a 9:40 pace. This was on a treadmill  but at least I can run inside. It is just to hot out for me, 100+.

I am thinking about doing a long run one of these nights by moonlight. It drops to the 90s then. I can only do it with the full moon though as thankfully we have no lights out here.

You know, you may want to look into a headlamp. Never tried one until the Bourbon Chase. My first leg came a few (maybe 2) minutes before midnight (queue the Iron Maiden for Wraith) and it was one of the most amazing runs I've had. I will still go out with the headlamp from time to time just for giggles. You'd be surprised how much light you can get out of a $20 lamp.

This would be really cool to do, but I don't live in a state where venomous predators hang out on roads at night . . .

Ned has gotten in my head. My great grandmothers funeral was today. I was shoveling dirt on her casket (Jewish tradition), and since i was one of the more fit ones, I was doing it for a while. At one point, I actually thought to myself, I wonder what my heart rate is.

5K on Sunday. My first in over a month. I hear there is a nasty hill so I'll do my best to PR but not sure this is the one.

Went for an 11 miler yesterday and had to cut it to 6 after 2 "special deliveries" in the woods. It was a crappy run IMO

Another Tuesday Tri ride. Another 6 PRs. Finished with the two fastest guys out there - the group started with a dozen or so folks and whittled down as we went on. Pretty good day on the bike. One more run and swim on tap, then I get to lay about and get fat before the weekend.

With all the GPS talk, my 305 must have gotten jealous and decided to crap out on me. The screen was completely dead this morning. Hit the power button, nothing...put it back on the charger...nothing.

Hasn't that happened to a few people here lately? I haven't even had that thing a year, and I just threw out the ####### box :wall:

I will admit it was quite liberating running without the thing this morning. I know i did my 4 mile route, but dont have the slightest clue what my pace was.

Yes, leave it charging for several more hours and it may resurrect itself. It's possible it just wasn't connected right and the battery drained all the way down. However, this happened to me a week before it died again during my marathon so be warned.

It probably just needs a hard reset. I don't remember how to do it, but the manual is available at garmin's website.

Running my 2nd ever 5K on Saturday - should I take a few days off before or keep running the next couple of days & just take Friday off?

not sure if I'm supposed to rest my legs for a few day for a 5K or not..
Like others have said; I'd recommend a couple easy runs and a full day off. Not much you can do to help your race this late, and you can do a lot of things to hurt it (i.e., by not eating right, not hydrating, or taxing your legs).
I think the Garmin 305 is a little out of my price range at the moment. The 405 that was linked in here for $170 looks like something I can manage. I don't think I'll have it in time for my 5k coming up next week though. :(

FWIW: I do not like the 405. I bought it for myself and ended up giving it away. I really like 4 screens of data (instead of 3) and didn't like the bevel. The 305 is superior IMHO.

I feel for you GB. I hate the dreadmill, but it has to beat running with rattlesnakes or running in 100's+. Running at night is pretty awesome though, and 2Y's headlamp suggestion is a good one. I wear my headlamp often for literally no particular reason other than it makes my daughters think I'm a dork.

Sorry to hear about your grandma Acer. LOL regarding thinking Ned-like thoughts. I have a friend/neighbor who often needs to make "special deliveries" when he runs. You can tell how good/bad it was by how many socks he has on when he returns.

My update:

I did P90x Arms and Shoulders yesterday and proceeded to torture my body last night. I buddy had his 40th birthday party. We ended up downtown at two different shot bars, going back and forth between them. I'm going to have to torture the poison out of me today. I'll be doing P90x Cardio; then Ab Ripper; then CrossFit; back to back to back prior to sitting by the pool and :banned: this evening.

The motoactv has 4 + the total time and distance just above the 4 grids giving you 6 pieces of data at glance. I of course took advantage of that and display both current HR and Average HR as my top 2 displays. :excited:

Ran yesterday for the first time since last Thursday. Not a good run at all. Did 4.5mi - felt slow and HR was way up. Knee started to hurt right around mile 4 again. Not feeling very confident going into race tomorrow.

Acer - sorry about your grandmother. sucks.

I meant to respond to this earlier. That's a great LT run! I remember you were always running these around an 8:00, right? Good stuff!

Another Tuesday Tri ride. Another 6 PRs. Finished with the two fastest guys out there - the group started with a dozen or so folks and whittled down as we went on. Pretty good day on the bike. One more run and swim on tap, then I get to lay about and get fat before the weekend.
What (event) are you training for?
Guessing with the amount and intensity, all of them :excited:

For all the Garmin talk - I will recommend the 405. It took a bit to get to the bezel touch, but I love it now and am so glad that I found a good deal on it when I needed it. The auto-sync when it gets near the computer is money.

IK - Nice LT run.

Just got done with another hilly 6 miles. My legs are getting used to it, which is a good thing. I am planning on a flat course in the fall so I am hoping the extra leg strength will propel me a bit more at the end of a race. Also I had an enjoyable run as I forgot all my dorky gear at home today. It was just me running with no worry about pace or HR. Very relaxing and nice to just get back to running. Now I will get back to all of that tomorrow, but I think it is always good to get back to just doing it, just because.

Have a great day all.

My guess is this.
:lmao: You guys consistently (and vastly) overestimate my abilities. I have a sprint tri on Saturday and a du on Sunday. Gonna be an epic weekend.

Ned - When you did P90X, do you think you would have had enough energy to train for a marathon? I really want to do a P90X or Insanity to work with my core, but am worried it will interfere with running too much. I just am not sure that I am able to force myself to workout if I don't have the energy.

I know PSL is able to do a lot of the P90 and ride a lot, but I am thinking he is the energizer bunny and just goes and goes.

Anyone else have any other ideas?

I wasn't really into running when I did Insanity but I was able to squeeze in a run here and there. For me finding time to do anything else was more of an issue than energy (though I was just running a few miles here and there not training for a marathon). The month 2 Insanity workouts are pushing an hour if I remember correctly.

Just wanted to say thanks to all that have replied to my questions etc.. being such a novice runner - I really appreciate all of the suggestions..

Good luck to all that are running this weekend..

If you wanted to do the full blown P90x schedule, I don't think I'd last more than a few weeks. Unless you're PSL, of course. I could see some sort of mix where you worked in the core CDs on recovery (run) days - Chest/Back, Shoulders/Arms, etc. I've toyed with this idea and every time it scared the crap outta me. Thinking about 50 mile weeks plus P90x just sounds insane. The other thought was to use the Core Synergistics CD on recovery days. That's an easier workout, but would still be a good cross training opportunity.

If you do this, let me know how it goes. I'd love to try this, but I'm too chicken to be the guinea pig. :bag:

ETA: Don't forget what Tony always preaches. Be sure to stay on top of your fuel (food). Adding marathon training to P90x is going to blow a hole in any sort of nutrition plan they'd give you in the P90x book.

pmb: Hill work will definitely help in the long run (no pun intended), as it will help you increase leg turnover. If I'm not mistaken it is Tri-Man's second commandment, right behind the joy of lunging.

Not overestimating. Your times are real GB. You, 2Y and BnB have the ability to start crushing some tri's!

I fixed the top paragraph. I've actually put some thought into how I'd train now IF I could run again. Please remember that I was a 3x per week runner, even when I trained for an ultra. This is what I would do:Sunday: Long run day

Monday: Chest and Back OR Chest Shoulders and Tri's (Every other week) + easy 20 mile bike ride

Tuesday: Pace run = 5-8 miles with middle 3 miles at marathon pace + Ab Ripper X

Wednesday: Shoulders and Arms OR Back and Biceps (Every other week) +- hard 20 mile bike ride

Thursday: Speed or Hill work (I liked Yasso 800's, working up to 10 3 weeks prior to marathon) + Ab Ripper X

Friday: Legs and Back

Saturday: Core Synergistics + Long bike ride

I'd avoid Plyo, Kenpo and Cardio. You would end up hitting core 3x per week; getting cardio 6 days per week, but only three are runs; working Legs on Friday and a bit on Saturday prior to your long run (= simulated tired legs sooner); and you get the big 3 (only 3 needed in my opinion) run workouts. I'd max out at UNDER 40 miles per week as my hardest week would include: 22 mile long run + 8 mile pace + 9.25 miles of Yasso's = 39.25 miles. You could do this and skip the bike workouts and (at least spin on Monday's) you wouldn't be working out all that much time per week.
