Live Reporting. We will attempt to post live results every 1 to 2 hours through our website. WWW.UMSTEAD100.ORG. We will make every effort to get near live results out but please understand we sometimes have communications coverage issues at our location in the Park. Less than 2 weeks to go for me.
I'm going to have to have my crew keep tabs on you and updating me while I'm running half as far as you!
Good news on your daughter. Glad you were able to blew off some stress w/o stressing the Achilles.I'm number 137. Appreciate the "sweat", that's a good kind of pressure to carry along with me.
Thanks, was able to blow off even more today - 10.5 miles on singletrack with no pain! Took it nice and easy, walking all uphills to avoid extra stress on the achilles, and even had to stop to check emails a couple of times, but still managed to move along at an ok pace for me. This was a fasted run too, nothing but coffee with a splash of coconut milk beforehand, it was good to get the fat burning/aerobic system a good tuning. And I know what you mean by the "sweat" - I've often been motivated during a race thinking about the crew here.beer - thanks for sharing that, good stuff. I'll find you on twitter by searching #M4M.

Good luck, man. I can honestly say that I have ZERO desire to run 100 miles. None. Hell, I'm not even sure why I'm taking another crack at 50 miles. :loco:

I have a HM that day on the trails, I'll be thinking about BnB  Good news is I'll finish up and you'll just be getting warmed up for the day so I'll tune in as well. Really like these ultra events.

It will be interesting to see if you change your tune after you crush that 50M like you did this last 50K.What you really need to do is go pace or crew someone at a 100M, volunteer at an aid station, or just go hang out at the finish. That will get you thinking about it.

My 15 miler on Sunday was pretty lousy, and yesterday's recovery run involved more stiffness than it really should have, but today's 10 miler on the indoor track was easy as hell. I fully expected this one to be a slog, but I had absolutely no problem banging it out at ~8:45/mi and feeling completely fresh at the end. Not sure where that came from.

Way to bounce back, Ivan. I did 12 yesterday afternoon, which was probably too much, too soon following my big mileage weekend, but I wanted to get my MLR out of the way sooner rather than later so that I can bump up my long run to Friday afternoon. Anyway, quads and calves were definitely sore, but I pushed through, starting pretty slow, but managing to get down into the low 8s for the last few miles. Overall average 8:21/mile.

Just a couple of short runs (5- and 6-milers) the next couple of days. Hopefully a couple of yoga sessions, too.

Dude, that's rollin'! I love those solid GA runs that leave you feeling like that.

Duck shared this on Facebook a couple of days ago, but I thought it was worth sharing here, too. Fascinating story:

Becoming the All-Terrain Human
After you read it, watch this to see Killian in action:
meh...I've done that before. Usually after I trip on a rock.Duck - Have you ever caught a stick paralleling your direction of travel right on top of the toes have it plant on the front end into the ground like a pole vault as your foot comes forward? Dang near torn my hip/groin when I did this at the Frosty events.

You can see his ski background come into play, as he almost skis down those steep scree slopes.BNB, I have done that but it was a small enough stick that it ended up snapping before I did. Worst thing I've probably done is trip going down stone "steps" on a cliff edge with a 90 degree turn in the trail at a rock wall 30' in front of me - I stumbled and bumbled trying to get my feet under me while trying to lean away from the cliff to avoid going over the edge. I got my balance and my hands up to slow myself just before I hit the wall - my cheek literally ended up touching the wall. I'm also pretty sure I hit my mHR at that exact moment.

The ultra guys and 3 hour marathon guys in this thread are pretty astonishing to me. I just have no frame of reference for people like Killian. Unfathomable.

Nice runs Grue and Ivan. Six easy for me this morning. I will do a 12-mile MLR tomorrow, take Friday off and do 16-20 Saturday.

Hey BnB - short 20 mile ride yesterday. First Tuesday afternoon I've had off for forever and it was bloody 41F - froze my ### off. Good thing it was short. For the important part I laid down 240w normalized for 40 minutes. Didn't even lay down the wood except on two little hills.

Yesterday did 2k in the pool. Finished up with 10x100 leaving on 1:30. Averaged 1:14-1:15 for the set. Very good effort there (yes I know no one here cares about swimming :boxing: )

I care enough to say that, at best, I'd leave on the 2:15 mark. Your times amaze me!

Sweet. It's been freaking cold here too. Still dropping below freezing at night. Mountains have over a foot of snow the last couple of days. Was thinking about riding up there this weekend but it hasn't cracked 30 degrees in close to a week and won't until Sunday. Me no ride on the ice. Will also need a couple of big rains to wash away the cinders, salt, and sludge in the hairpins.

Fun run tonite. Left home and headed to the Davidson x-country trail. Yes, the Davidson that choked last week against Marquette. Man they have done the trails up nice over the last couple of months. The must have spent a ton on crush and run. It was then rolled. Pretty much like fine rock sidewalks.

Anyway, saw about 10 deer, 1 turkey, a couple of bunnies, and an owl. Passed within three feet of the deer and she didn't even flinched (obviously knew Ned wasn't with me). The owl (which I first thought was a hawk) swooped in and land in a tree about 50 yards in front of me and to the right. It just so happened that there was a hairpin turn that circled it's landing spot about 10 yards away. That owl watched me the whole time and swiveled it's head around with me as I made the 180 turn. Pretty cool.

Average hr was 138 with a 9:46 pace. Not sure where that came from. Hip complained the whole way...I'm getting used to it.

Used to wonder how this thread got to so many pages and how it always appeared on the front page. Now I look forward to reading it. I read about some of these runs people are doing and I am amazed. You guys are quite motivating.

 This place is dangerously addictive. You'll be training for a marathon before you know and wonder one day "HTF did I end up here?". :excited:

Owls are badass creatures. I was running trails a week or so ago at the state park I always hunt. Turn a blind corner and the woods erupted with tails. Had to be at least a dozen does right there on the trail. I can't believe they didn't hear me coming. So close you could see their buttholes.

Two guys three and four lanes over from where I swim are ranked masters for the state of MI. No idea how the ranking system works, but one brags he is ranked 5th and his buddy is second. I've watched them through the water as I am going long doing similar intervals on the 1:30 mark and seeing that type of speed is something to see. There is a college female swimmer that was just back on break training with them that would smoke them for the first 500 or so, but their endurance would take over for the later reps. I've continued the going long mantra. I've been able to keep all swims of 2,500 and 3,000 under 2M 100s. Last two swims were a 3,000 just above 57 minutes and a 2,500 under 47 minutes. Work has been a ##### lately, so these long swims (with the 910XT doing the counting for me) have been like therapy.

Doing my part to further the cause

So I had my appointment with the orthopedist yesterday. I guess it went about as well as I could have expected. Did some X-rays and he quickly dismissed the notion that it could be any type of femoral stress fracture. He basically said that that type of injury is only common among chicks. I asked if he's ever seen a 30 something year old man with a femoral stress fracture due to running and he said, NO. He did notice a little buildup of bone at the edge of my femoral neck...said that could be causing the hip pain. Also said that the pain above my knee is most likely due to an inflamed quad tendon.

So basically, I just need to get back on the anti-inflammatories for a month and just watch exercises that irritate my leg. If I still have pain in a month, it's MRI time.

Overall, I'm pretty pleased since I've been feeling a bit better each day and I've been given the greenlight to manage the injury myself.

Great news. Also, I'm laughing at how I imagine this conversation going:Hang 10: So, Doctor, is there any possibiity that this could be a femoral stress fracture?

M.D.: No, man, that's a chick injury.

Funny because he was trying to be PC about it but that was basically the gist of it.

Not a great week last week for me (23.5miles) but the good news is we went to contract on a house. At least here in Raleigh area, good, well priced homes were flying off the market and we had to drop everything anytime a house came up. So hopefully soon I can stop sacrificing the training and get into a groove. Even with the off week, though, I should get in 155-160 for the month of March after 112 in February. Hoping to consistently run 200+ months by May and find a HM I can PR in this fall.

Good to hear it went as well as it could've. Isn't the femoral neck what grue was talking about, anyways?

Yeah, I read basically what he read on the web and my symptoms were very similar to a femoral neck stress fracture. Pain in the hip, groin and thigh area...pain is hard to pinpoint at times. But again, that's an injury that is extremely uncommon among men...especially rare among young strapping men such as myself.

Getting my legs in the stirrups was a little uncomfortable but he was surprisingly gentle.

Good to hear Hang 10...glad that smear went well.

Anyone actually ever wanted to borrow one of those chairs to strap the SO in? Or is it just me?

Anyway...some great stories and runs by people lately.

Nice to still follow it all.

For me...been up and about more the last 2 days and off of the painkillers except for one before bed to help me sleep.

Still icing things down at the Doc said Im doing good...so I can't complain too much.

Good excuse to not do crap around the house.

Sorry hunny, I can't help with laundry...can't lift the basket right now...Doctor's orders.

Been some kickass weather though lately which has me pissed about not being able to get out there.

Another 2 weeks and I can at least get out and walk a little bit and will likely do that for the next 3 week after that til I can start some light jogging.

THe main irritation now is where hair is growing back where they pretty much shaved half of my groin area.

And the ball pain...blue balls has nothing on this crap from my left nut right now.

No doubt.

My schedule is all sorts of wacky right now. We're heading down to Tampa for vacation on Saturday, so my running is going to be hit/miss until next week. Had a solid past 4 days. Hoping to just keep things going at this point and get back on it end of next week.

Mon (8mi MLR) - Snow storm hit, but it was too warm for it to stick to the roads. I was soaked, but felt really strong. 8:52/143

Tue (10mi MLR) - Windy and my legs were kinda heavy. Should've backed off more than I did. 8:56/146

Wed (5mi recovery) - Legs were back. I was tempted to switch things around since I felt so good, but decided I should stick to the plan. 9:45/133

Thu (8mi MLR) - Felt incredible today. I had to really fight to slow down. I wish I had more time, or I would've turned this into a 10-12 just because it felt so good. Came stupid easy. 8:49/143

Shooting to get a 12 miler in tomorrow between getting everything packed for vacation. I hate that vacation is hitting when it feels like I'm hitting a breakthrough, but so is life. Looking forward to some warm weather!

GL to anyone racing over Easter break!
