Ran a 10k in June (6 Viewers)

It was unseasonably warm today (40), so I was able to get out there in shorts for an easy 5-miler. A rare treat in mid-February.
Warmest day of the year today here with no rain and little wind. Also new shoes arrived today that I'd like to try out (Duck and BnB will be proud!). However, I'm stuck at work and have an evening meeting and then a business dinner tonight. Tomorrow it's supposed to rain with 20 plus mph winds.

I'm sure they'll fit about the same as your old pair.

Too bad they aren't as pretty.

I think it got to 70 here today. hit the trail, did 7 miles including two different iterations of hill repeats. 1800' total ascent.

Here's a time lapse video of the course from roughly mile 6 to 12 as of yesterday. Looks like I under estimated the snow. This is all below 5000 ft elevation.

Yeesh!

Regarding the shoes, I was thinking you could either carry them casually (ho hum, an extra pair in case my shoes get wet from the snow or creek crossings) or, more generally, slip your hands in them in case you need to crawl or happen to fall. (Don't lace them through the tongue slot, and then you could 'wear' them with your hands between the laces and tongue for a snugger fit that won't distract you so much.) In a sense, it's not much different than carrying a handheld bottle.

Juxt is right - a couple warm days here in Chicago. But the sidewalks were impossible - melted snow froze overnight and created a lot of clear, slippery film. Streets were better, but not great. I suspect this is what the next few weeks will be like.

The air was a refreshing change of pace, but my lord the terrain out there is horrendous, especially after dark. Today was hard, but last night was borderline impossible.

Wow 1800' on 7mi is kick ###!BNB: please wear shoes on your hands. Pretty please.
:pics:

honestly, although the garmin has consistently given me similar stats here, it just doesn't feel that intense. There were portions that show >25% incline, and while there certainly were some steep slopes, I didn't have to wear shoes on my hands...

Ran 13 crappy miles on sunday and then followed it up monday with a climb up turtlehead peak. Yesterday I could barely walk.

When I call them crappy miles, I mean crappy as in I lit up a McDonalds, Subway, and gas station bathroom along the way. It was awful.

Assuming you're using Garmin Connect.... Check to see if the 'Elevation Corrections' is Enabled.

  • What are Elevation Corrections?Elevation Corrections cross reference the horizontal position (latitude/longitude) provided by the GPS with elevation data that has been acquired by professional surveys. When corrections to elevation data are made, each trackpoint of your activity now contains the elevation from the web service, not the elevation provided by your GPS device.
Garmin Connect selectively applies corrections to depict a more realistic representation of your elevation experience. Activities recorded from devices without a barometric altimeter are enabled with Elevation Corrections by default. Alternatively, activities recorded by devices with a barometric altimeter generally contain accurate elevation data and therefore Elevation Corrections are disabled by default. For those users who are familiar with the MotionBased Gravity service, this is the same service.

Yea that looks like a hoot. How far is this little jaunt?
40 mile, although if the snow didn't see some serious melting over the last two days the course will be altered somewhere between 26.2 and 35. There was a good bit of rain yesterday which could have helped out a lot. Of course you know that it's been unseasonably warm here this week so temps go into the 40 up there the last couple of days. Decison will be made Friday

5 miles Monday

5 miles today...but damn I think I missed the end of winter and we moved right into late spring. 65 and humid this morning. WTF...we went straight from the 20s to the 60s it seems (though, maybe I missed the 40s while coughing up a lung there for 2 weeks). Supposed to get cold again next week though...so Im not really whining about the "heat".

The biggest scare today...Jim freakin Cantore is in town, that is never a good thing.

So I went on my typical 5 mile run yesterday. Ran slow, HR super high, felt horrible. A bit warm and humid, so I thought it might be weather shock. Well, it turned out to be a precursor to the horrible stomach bug that my kid brought home.

24 hours later I finally got my first fluids and food in. And lost 5 lbs. Oof. Feeling much better, though.

I use the Training Center that came with the watch and mapmyride. Doesn't seem to support the 305.

I am probably going to upgrade next month: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2014/02/garmin-fenix2-multisport-triathlon.html

Did a comfortable 5 miles just now...great weather, but damn it was slushy. Gave up dodging the puddles after a few minutes and just went for it.

Still debating my strategy for the half marathon race this weekend... Think I am going to run it the same as I plan to run Boston in 2 months, see how it feels

that's been going around out here...only hit me marginally, but took out the wife and son.

You always feel amazing on the other end though, small silver lining

Ran 6 Tuesday, 4 yesterday and another 6 today. Looking to round out a 30 mile week with a 10 on Saturday and 6 on Sunday. I think my knee issues are behind me for the most part but still having some lingering quad pain.

I'd really like to put together a few 30 mile weeks in a row before my half marathon in mid-March. If I'm healthy, gonna make another attempt at 1:29.

Love how you slip that in there! That's going to be an incredible day.

Been super busy but lurking. Just wanted to give a quick congrats to the guys who have recently expanded their families and hope you guys are getting used to the changes.

Hope Duck's dad is recovering well.

Good luck this weekend BnB and Wilked, and anyone else racing. Keep up the good work everyone else.

Also, any more updates on the hip issues Gruecd?

Today should help some, hard rain for a while should melt a lot of what's out there. Flip side is it's going to be a muddy, mucky mess. All things considered I think I'd opt for the snow. Good luck man, I know you'll pull the usual BnB stud performance so I feel odd even saying it but whichever way the course comes out it's going to be one helluva challenge!

So my sneaks are collectively getting pretty stinky, especially my NB Minimus which I run with no socks. Who has best practices on removing that funk?

Wash em, those Minimus shoes are pretty much spandex with soles right? I know there are varying opinions on washing shoes but those or something like the Nike Flyknit, I don't see what the hurt would be.

If nothing else, take out the insoles and scrub 'em down good. You can immerse the shoes in a bucket to wash off the grime ...let them drip dry for a bit (you can squeeze out a lot of the water as it accumulates in the heel padding), then use the trick of stuffing newspaper in them and replacing the paper a few times.

Latest updates....

We are looking for the rain to push through today...but, conditions on the mountain are a complete mess...still deep snow on the upper trails in most places, combined with heavy rain and melt runoff...The likelihood of an altered course is high...but, we will still be going to the summit!

High winds and pounding rain on the summit this morning...the temperature has dropped into the 30s up there in the last hour. We are staging our backcountry aid stations today in hopeful preparation for a full course run in the morning...A new concern is erosion impact of runners on soggy single track...The evaluation is being made now...

Good luck BnB. You too, Wilked.

I am still waiting for my MRI and going crazy. Hip is a little sore. PT doesn't think it is a tear and wants me to get in there so he can rehab it. Doc told me to wait for the MRI. Obeying for now.

Newspaper and dryer sheets work ok. The shoe dryer I have (PEET) removes pretty much all the smell, as well.

-----

On my end I ran a horrible 5 miler on Wednesday (slow pace super high HR, etc.). Felt ok after and was going to swim that night. Ended up at home with a horrible stomach bug. Lost 6 lbs - basically ate or drank nothing for 24 hours. Back at work today - feel like a waif waiting for a small breeze to blow me away. Hoping for a very slow swim after work.

Beyond badass.

So..... I haven't been as active in here as my running has slowly been taking a back seat to a pursuit of a life time dream I've always had; professional archery. I shot competitively starting at age 7 and was a sponsored shooter as a teen. When the shop that sponsored me closed their doors in '95, I stupidly gave up the sport. I've always regretted that decision, but with the lack of local support it was hard to keep up (excuses!).

FF to last fall, I started to shoot competitively again when my brother took interest in it. With the internet, it's a lot easier to get products/support then it was in '95 when there were no local shops around. It's been like riding a bike... Last Sunday I won my first tournament (a small one) since coming back. My wife and I have discussed me pursuing becoming a pro and she's fully backed and even pushing me to go for it.

We'll be traveling to KY next month for the Indoor Nationals; I need to wet my beak on the big stages. No better way than to just throw myself into it. Unless I blow the doors off of a big shoot, I'll be shooting independently (no sponsors) for 2014. Working with a coach now who's been pushing me hard. He's half the reason for this pursuit; he's convinced I can beat the top dogs.

So with that has to come sacrifices. While I'm still running/training, my volume has been weak; 25-35 mpw. I'll still be running races and possibly still pursuing Boston. I'm playing it by ear for now.

Ran a hilly 6MLR for lunch today..... 65 degrees felt like 100!!!! :loco:

Sounds awesome. Good luck!

Very cool, Ned. With your running and shooting talents you would've been a helluva warrior or hunter and gatherer back in the day.

I'm also interested in what is going on with Grue. My guy told me that my labral tear was slight and didn't recommend surgery but I've been feeling it again a little more lately. Trainingwise, I got back up to 33 miles last week after a couple dud weeks with the baby and tooth yanking. On pace for 35 or so this week. Nothing fast or long, just trying to maintain mileage.

I'm still holding to my prediction of the zombie apocalypse here.

Good luck to BnB (hopefully you'll be able to go!) and Wilked and anyone else racing this weekend!

Congrats on the victory Robin Ned! Too bad there isn't a sport out there for you similar to the winter biathlon. Maybe run a 5K with target shooting stops! You'd clean up in that!

Funny, I've watched the Olympic biathlon and have huge respect for those guys. Its incredible what they can shoot while their hearts are beating out of their chests.

Ole Einar Bjørndalen is a stud. And, seeing as I'm close to his age, my hero.

It would be even better if the targets shot back ;)

Shooting after doing anything active is tough. Even tougher doing it competitively i imagine.

So i left my garmin at the hotel, no big deal as i go back monday. Have an old 205 here but im somewhat inclined to just do my route without it. This will be a down week, but im hesitant to not have any data and risk running too hard...

Thoughts?

Run free. There have been several times I've gone out the last couple years with nothing on. It's liberating to just run without worrying about time or pace.

And let's face it: if you're like me, you know your normal routes and how to run them. Just go, look around at the scenery and enjoy it.

Pretty much, although i tend to deviate my routes depending on mileage. I do have a 13 mile route I like but avoid because a few mile stretch throws my hr monitor off.

Funny you mention that. You would be awesome at that sport.

We're on to go to the top. Minor course deviation that will eliminate 1 mile of very technical trail and 1 mile of gravel road replaced by hardtop.

that time of year, gotta think things pick up again in a month or so. Outside of my one race I'm just trying to build miles right now. Will start training when the snow goes away.

This has been a horrible winter for any serious outdoor training ...and now Chicago will see some more sub-zero temps over the next several days! My fall season was a string of tapers and recovery with the marathons, followed by this sucky winter. So other than Christmas week, I haven't hit 30 miles for a week since mid-August. The only thing I have been able to do consistently is get in a double digit mileage run on the weekend.

On a smaller scale, but similar story here. Been consistently around 25 miles per week, but only one per week more than 5 or 6 miles. Want to do a 7 and 10 type of weekend next week or the week after, but it depends how this next winter blast goes. Weather is good enough to do one this weekend, but the ground is not cooperating. Nice mix of clean surface, ice, matted down icy snow, and mud. Going to head out late tomorrow afternoon before temps drop below freezing and hoping to do 8 or 9 but will audible if the surface is still shaky.

I gave up about three weeks ago and decided I'd experiment with my body instead. I had the brilliant idea that I'd sign up for a half marathon the first week of April as motivation. Dumb. So, I am going to see if its possible to prepare for a 1/2 on one run day a week. For the last month, I have been working out 6 days a week, doing 2 swim days, 2 days of intense hot yoga (including one day a week with weights = power lunges in warrior pose) a day on the spin bike and a run day. I have been having shoulder issues, so I can't quite swim with the intensity I'd like. I can still do 2,000+ yard swims, but my pace is close to 2 minute 100s. I jacked the shoulder I tore my rotator cuff on shoveling snow. It does not seem to be torn again, but isn't quite right. I am taking 4 days off of anything upper body (today is day 3) and it feels better. Now, if the ####### snow would just stop I could probably heal fully.
