Ran a 10k in June (7 Viewers)

While no races are planned, I am already looking forward to next season, which will start with shorter distances. Targeting the Olympic distance triathlon feels right, for now. I took today off work and got in two workouts - a 40 minute swim this morning and a 90 minute bike ride this afternoon. It feels good, knowing that these these times already exceed the race times for an Olympic tri. Itching to run again, too, but the Achilles still says 'not yet.'
Damn... it makes me really happy to read that post, tri-man. (not about the achilles though- sorry to hear it's still not there).I got so hooked into the 1/2s (my ideal distance due to the proportion of swim to bike/run) and the longer time required, that I started dreading NYC as soon as I signed up. But it's an olympic and you are totally right- 90mins on the bike- 60mins running, 45mins swimming... all very managable training sessions for a guy like me these days. That really just made my day... :lmao:

And the beauty of NYC is that they time it so that you are swimming with an ebb-tide down the Hudson. I did it in 24 mins last time- a good 10+mins faster than in a slack-tide/lake. You can pretty much lay flat on your back with a cocktail in one hand and finish the swim faster than I usually take to do 1500meters.

eta: Any specific races targeted?
:lmao: I agree, as I love the Olympic distance. I have yet to run any further though, so that is still in my "to do" list. Olympics push me to train at a fairly high level, though I'm not too fearful of injury/burnout. Take it easy on that achilles.

FYI: if you can find a race that promotes laying on the back and having a cocktail during the swim, I'm in! I received some great training in that arena last week!

Me, tomorrow night. I have an 8K along a 5 mile long lighted Xmas display. They close down the road and charge folks admision to drive through. Tomorrow night is the kick off event. Then, the family is off to do the beach thing too. We are heading to Mazatlan for the Thanksgiving week, meeting my sister, bro-in-law and their kids. My brother-in-law puts me to shame running wise, so I'll be spending the week trying to keep up (but I can still out :lmao: him).
Awesome race idea!! I might want to propose this for our local X-mas display!!Have a blast!!

I had intended to post this before, but it slipped my mind, has anyone else tested the new disposeable timing chip at any recent races? I did at the Free Press half/full marathon last month and hope like heck it was successful. I searched but cannot find results of the test.

The whole concept was very cool. While we used the traditional ChampionChip to be tied to the shoe, there was also another one. It came stuck to the bib. It was peeled off and has a loop to be tied through the shoe lace as well. The cool part, was that it was flexible and not rigid like the other chip (I can never get it to fit quite right on my shoe). It has a small sensor laced in the tab. I also thoght it was very neat that it was stuck to the bib and had the entry number on it to match the bib number.

Another question, test or no test, is there any worth to buying your own chip? I would guess, only if you wanted to track all your races by it.

i've got the Noodleini coming up with gruecd the saturday SUNDAY after Thanksgiving. just a 5K but with 10 extra lbs of turkey in my stomach i'm interested to see how it works out.

:obc:

which reminds me i have to get over there to sign up for it.
Yep. Still trying to convince Furley to join me for the 15K instead of the 5K, but I'm pretty sure it's not going to happen. Maybe next year.

ETA: Also considering doing the 3rd annual Greater Green Bay YMCA "Wyld Turkey" 5K that's held on Thanksgiving morning. This one is right in Furley's backyard, too. What do you think, Furley, two races in four days? You up for it?

no 15k for this guy :lmao: that 5+ on saturday almost kilt me. next summer i should be ready though.first i've heard of this Wyld Turkey run. i'll have to think about that one. running off a few hundred calories in the morning before stuffing an 18lb turkey in my face might not be a bad idea. :lmao:

eta: the Noodleini is on Sunday! ####. good thing you said that. i woulda been out there on Saturday morning wondering what the #### was going on.

Training update...

Didn't get home last night until after 10:00 from client appointments in Milwaukee. Got to bed around 11:00 and then got up around 4:10 to meet a friend of mine at 4:45 for an eye-open.....err, for an early 8 miler. Would've gone a little later, but she had to be at work by 7:00. Anyway, did the 8 miles at 8:08 pace with temps in the upper 20s, and actually managed to get to the office by 7:00 myself.

Good, productive day so far, although I'm sure I'll crash and burn a little later....

:banned:I've never been much of a morning person, but I love my days when I get an early, pre-work workout in. Being a married curmudgeon helps in that regard, as I'm either asleep or cranky by 10pm...My own training update... nada. A few days after the marathon, my body gave me the :finger: and up and got sick on me. Just getting out of it now (seeing my doc today for some antibiotics to kick my inevitable chronic bronchitis, and nip these honking green lunkers that keep jumping out of my mouth) and JONESING to go running/biking/swimming.

Whoa, nellie! That's ambitious for having just finished your marathon!

Race report, Tuesday evening edition. Last night's 8K was a very, very cool event. The event covered the route for Wayne County's "Lightfest" which is a six mile stretch of road shut down for the holiday season in which folks can pay and drive though, we runners were the first to see the finished product this year which included around 20+ large lighted displays, including a few lighted tunnels of lights. You had to park at the finish and get bussed back to the start. There, they had a huge bonfire going with tree trunk size logs, a band shell with Xmas music and every runner got one (or more) of those lighted necklaces. The weather was perfect for November 13, @ around 51 degrees which drew a crowd of around 1,500 or so. I ran it in the race shirt, which had glow in the dark writing, shorts and foam reindeer antlers.

There were no timing chips or mats, so I started out running with my wife and a buddy. It was very dark and kind of trippy as all you could see around you (other than the light displays) was the bobbing of everyone's necklaces which were on arms, legs, etc. A few folks had battery operated Xmas lights around them done up like Xmas Trees. A few others we dressed up like presents, Santa, etc. Six guys running had the Xmas package done up in front ala "**** in a Box" like the SNL skit, classic.

Anyway, back to the run, we stuck with my wife for the first 2 miles or so clicking off at around 9 minute miles. She told us to go on and meet her at the end, so we took off and ended up running the 8K in just under 40 minutes (around 39:45ish). While not gruced time, not bad under the conditions and the obvious wind drag created by the reindeer antlers.

Finally, Roarin, while I know you were poking fun at me with you night time advice, I wanted to let you know it had solid application. After almost buying it a few times on unseen potholes and patching, I thought of the advice and migrated to the center lane marking on the road. This was golden as the yellow line was easily seen in the dark and there were few potholes, etc to dodge, THANKS!!

One more race this year, a 4-miler at 4pm on New Years Eve Day. Like the one above, it is an untimed event, so I think I may try and run this one in our family's Santa Suit.

Great Report 2Young! I'm guessing it was pretty awesome for the spectators as well. I believe antlers are pretty aero, as deer seem to be able to run pretty darn fast with them :wall:

That's a great report. We've got the same kind of thing in early December for the Trail of Lights on Austin. Nighttime run, first peek at the displays, etc. I ws thinking about doing it.

My green lunkers have turned clear, so I'm going to pull the bike down, dust off the trainer and put in a few minutes in the saddle tomorrow (scheduled rain all day). #### this running crap.

#### this running crap.
Pansy. :goodposting: Did five miles this morning despite wind chills in the lower 20s with 20+ mph wind gusts. Ran just under 8-minute pace.Playing basketball tonight and again tomorrow morning, and I might do a short (3-4 mile) run on the treadmill tomorrow afternoon before hitting the pavement for my weekly long run on Saturday.

Yesterday afternoon I finished 5 straight days of training, and it was my best yet. Just over 38.5 miles at a 9:11 pace. No more until a 9miler on Saturday, an 8 (I think) on Sunday, and a 5 on Monday. Then I am going to rest the legs Tuesday and Wednesday for the 10 mile race on Thursday.

We had great running weather this week, low in the high 50's, high in the mid 70's. But there is a cold front coming though tonight, on Saturday I will probably be running in high 40's low 50's, brrrrrrrrrr. Looks like winter is finally here.

I knew you guys would feel sorry for me having to run in this horribly cold weather. :excited:

Pricepoint.com sent me an email about an end of year blowout sale. Though they sell bike accessories, not running stuff.

Is it possible to run in a snowsuit. The temp Saturday morning may be in the high 30's  , and it won't hit 60 until about 10 am.

First of all - Darrin, "show a little backbone, will ya?"

Second, I think I've identified the problem with my heal - Haglund's deformity or syndrome.

http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cyberthe...ds_syndrome.htm

It's also called "pump bump," since it often occurs with women wearing heels. I knew that'd catch up with me eventually. :lmao: (Actually, it probably relates to wearing stiff Topsiders much of the time when walking the mile to/from work.) Now it's time to go to the doc, get a referral, and see if I should just rest it longer or if they want/need to do any surgery (one option, fortunately, is outpatient surgery).

It's always at least comforting to know what's going on. The fact that you can have outpatient surgery on it is a plus as well. If people ask what it is, I'd refer to it as a "syndrome", instead of a "deformity" though. FWIW: The plus side of you wearing those heels is that your calves look awesome in them! :lmao:

9 miles this morning in 1:21. 43 degrees here in Daytona Beach but my new winter running clothes worked out well.
Nice run, Darrin. You're really making strides (pun intended)! I did 10 miles this morning with my running club in about the same amount of time. I probably would've run a little faster if I'd been by myself, but I enjoyed the company. Only about 20 degrees here with brisk winds from the NE. I can handle the cold temps, but I can DEFINITELY do without the wind.

Picked up my race packet this morning for my Thanksgiving Turkey Trot 5k. Playing paintball tomorrow so no running until Tuesday probably.

Cool. I'm also thinking about Turkey Trotting (in Austin). I won't make up my mind about it until that morning.
Skipping my local Turkey Trot because the Packers play at 11:30, so I'll need to get to my in-laws' beforehand. Doing a 15K next Sunday, though!

Cowboys play at 3:15, so I'm good there. Just got back from a 4.5 mile run through the neighborhood where I just beat a huge rainstorm in by about two minutes. I was getting pretty worried about the rain and my mp3 player there at the end and probably set a personal record for the final quarter.

Saw the doc this morning, who checked the right heel, didn't act alarmed, and sent me across the way for an x-ray. X-ray showed new bone growth along the back of the heel (with a cute little bone spur, too). He asked me "are you like some of those fbgs that just have to keep running?" And I said "oh, no, I enjoy my cross-training and I have the patience to rest the heel from any running into the new year." So he said we'd wait and see - if it causes future problems with the achilles tendon, a doc could scrape down the excess bone.

Early this morning got in a great swim: 1,900 hundred yards, with 36 laps in 36:12. :towelwave:

Then later on, watched the Michigan game.

The ol' give it rest prescription... thanks, doc :homer: Glad to hear it's not something serious right now though :P ... and you went to an FBG doc? Suprised he didn't tell you to just rub some dirt on it...Sheesh- I couldn't keep up with you in the water even if I drafted the whole way. :awe:

... and you went to an FBG doc?
Naw, I just made up the FBG reference for effect.
So he didn't tell you to rub dirt on it?Hey- was it you or Pigskin who's doing the Total Immersion swim thingy? I'm going to try and get into the pool this week if work allows, and I'd be very curious to learn more about it. I've never had any health issues come up from swimming, but I go sooooo very slowly, I doubt anything will at my current speeds/effort. More for me is trying to go a little more... UNslowly. You Midwest guys aren't that far from upstate NY, right? There are a couple of nice 1/2s that I've done: Tinman @ Tupper Lake and Musselman @ Lake Geneva, that might be potential Tri-cornhole locations... hmmm?

7mi today in 60:59. Intended to do two 7mi loops, but my knees started hurting (much like when my I-T problems started last year). I'll either run s'more tonight, or tomorrow morning.

It's me. I've been out of the water for over a month, but I really enjoyed getting started on TI (hip talk for Total Immersion). The key is getting yourself balanced in the water, and rotating much more with your shoulders than I was doing previously. I recommend ordering the Drill Cards as I have both books, but would rather have the cards (= on my Christmas list!). Most of the books are common knowledge, while it's the drills that I've found extremely helpful. Tri-man has also posted a bunch of great tips in here, all which sound much like TI. I don't have time to go back to find his posts, but know I copied one, and still use it as a reference in the pool. I also try to visit the Go Swim website periodically, as they have great training videos there as well.

FWIW: TI has NOT made me any faster, but I am taking fewer strokes per length, and (knock on wood) believe that I'll be better able to avoid injuries because of it.

Still training hard here. Actually hitting new peaks while everyone else is packing it in for the season. Signed up for an indoor TT series and placed 1st of 36 in week one. That just motivated to ride this last weekend in 28 degree temps. Spent 3 days the prior week climb moutains in 40 degree temps while sick and on anti-biotics. Recently maxed out at 25.1 mph on my 5 min speed intervals which was a new pr.

Anyway, I drank a few too many beers and bought this bike tonite in the 06 flavor. http://www.cervelo.com/bikes.aspx?bike=P3C2008 Got a steal. Guess I'm committed to working on having an engine to justified this.

If you're referring to one of those aero drink containers that sits between the bars so you don't have to sit up to drink...then yes.
