Ran a 10k - Official Thread (2 Viewers)

This group is great.

Woke up this morning tired as hell. Been up late all week working on my house since the tapers and mudder guys were coming to do some sheetrock work for me. On top of that shoveled two inches of ice off my driveway yesterday, so body is pretty tired and sore.

I was at 21.4 miles or so for the week, and had posted here a month or so ago about trying to do at least 25 miles a week. Been good about that, but spent an hour this morning trying to talk myself out of running.

But I went anyway and knocked out 5 on the treadmill. Why?

Because you all have made me accountable to myself. More than likely nobody would have noticed if I ended up at 21.4.  But I knew.

So, thanks to all you guys. This thread helped to change my life.

Along this line I have created a little chart for myself to track my monthly goals. I kind of figured I'd update here each Monday for not good reason other than to make me have to face it and be more accountable to sticking to the plan. As mentioned before, maybe not in full detail...

January goals - running goal: 100 miles, pass/fail. Core strength via push ups/sit ups: A goal: 2500, B goal: 2000, C goal: 1500.

Really will be bummed if I don't hit the A goal. Really goal is to do about 100 of each per day but I know me and missing is possible. Plus I knew the first couple days would be sketchy. So, today is a Monday after a "mini week" and figured I'd post my own progress. To hit the running goal, I only have to average just under 3.25 miles per day. A goal for core strength is to average about 81 of each per day. I really plan to do 100 per day but built in a few cheat days and accounted for the schedule this first weekend. I really started doing them before now but just without tracking them. Also, I didn't list it before but also need to get the weight going the right direction. After overindulging a lot over the last 2 or 3 weeks, I'm as heavy now as I have been since January of 2019 - about 214. :X  I'm not really setting a weight goal other than to just go the "right direction". If I put the cookies and such down and do the work, the weight will take care of itself.

As of 1-3: Running: +1.77 miles; PU: -82; SU: -141

So, not the best start but actually more or less what I had planned. I feel good about the plan and my motivation to meet it.

I assume some of you have dealt with this before, it's new to me.

Ran the first of the monthly HM series on Saturday. Went okay, nothing stellar but good enough. Felt sore afterwards but manageable. Yesterday rode a little, had some fun with the wife, and walked in the afternoon with the boys. Left groin started to hurt. Took the dog for a walk after that and the groin started to really hurt. Pain persisted throughout the night, woke up this morning and it hurt to walk or even stand on one leg.

I usually stand to work, but sat for a while. Got up to get food and could barely walk around 10. Took two of the kids to the dentist, no pain to walk. Pain seems to be completely gone. I'm not complaining but it seems weird.

Now I'm not sure if I should walk the dog this afternoon, I'm pretty sure I won't be doing anything vigorous. Tomorrow I'll probably hit the pool, although I might pull more than kick. 🤷🏼‍♂️

pretty sure the first bold explains the 2nd. obviously a sex injury. ;)

Was this Z fun or normal fun?

It was good to feel the "running addiction" today. I was basically counting down the time until I could go out there. Between being back on a plan, even if it isn't really a plan right now, and the carrot out there of those races, I kind of wanted to just keep on running when I was done but don't want to over do it or anything.

Take it for what it's worth, but according to a buddy whose friend works in marketing for Abbott (title sponsor of the World Marathon Majors), if the Boston Marathon does happen this year, it'll be on Monday, October 11, one day after Chicago.  Personally I doubt that either one happens, but I went ahead and booked a hotel room just in case before the hotels get wind of the date and jack up their prices.

Thanks for the update.

@JAA, you still a possibility for lodging?

Crazy timing, unfortunately no for Oct 11.  My 15k Boilermaker road race rescheduled for Oct 10.  The family and I will be in central New York at the time.

If you are in a pinch, I could certainly make my house available sans any foot rubs, but I am thinking that wouldn't be ideal.  If you have no other option we could make it work.

Experienced both the good and bad this morning of not having a 2021 mileage goal.

Bad in the sense that I felt more empowered to not go out and run, because I wouldn't have to look at Strava and see me falling behind pace.  Hoping that this isn't a slippery slope where I find more excuses to not run.

Good in the sense that my butt wasn't feeling great (and hasn't on the two runs I've done this week), and I instead did weights/PT for the first time in two weeks.

Unrelated (perhaps related), I seem to have put on 10lbs over the last month or so, and now have a little muffin top when looking in the mirror.  Need to get back on the no-sugar wagon.

Where's the race?

I need to line some stuff up for myself. I only had NYC 1/2 on tap, and that's out.

Any thoughts on types and timing for races? I think I'm game for another marathon and definitely some 1/2s. It's too bad I hate swimming so much, it'd be fun to dust the bike off and take it out of storage for some Tris.

Smart not to push your butt, imo.

As I've been running more and with the weather colder, I've returned my Tri training days of getting hungry quickly and wanting to consume bigger portions. Used to feel like a toddler- hungry! must eat...NOW! I had gotten down to the low 180s at the end of the summer...genuine fighting weight for me (I had been hovering +/- 200 for years of sedentary living). But the way I've been eating lately, I wonder if I'm gaining it back, in spite of the increased mileage.

Sounds familiar. I'm eating like I'm training for a marathon.

Which I'm not.

OK, no problem, thanks.  I'll decide later whether to stay in the city or the 'burbs.

You have to take care of yourself but, for me, that is a very slippery slope. It's so easy to make a day skipped turn into 2 turn into 3 months...

Yes, there were so many times in 2020, especially late in the year, where I desperately wanted to not run in the morning.  But the thought of having to look at Strava and see me fall another 11km behind goal pace is what got me out the door.

I was eating everything in site, especially the last couple weeks of December. Having recommitted to eating correctly and committing to working out and/or running daily, things are heading back the right direction. Made it up to 214, which I haven't been at for almost exactly 2 years. I have been losing about 1/2 lb a day or so lately. Hopefully I can stay on the wagon and get back under 200 sooner rather than later.

HFS that's a lot!  Nice work.
It won't stay that pace. always starts a little fast when I get serious again, especially after going gonzo for period of time. I literally gained about 6 pounds in 2 weeks or so around the holidays. But when I first came around here and got mega serious with training and such, I did drop a lot in a short amount of time. I went from like 220 down to the 200 in about 3 months. That's not any kind of crash diet or anything. Just deliberate eating and consistent exercise.

Its the Boilermaker in Utica NY.  I believe it is sold out, but if you get a chance its a must do.  Huge pre-COVID turnout, free party afterwards, loads of fun.

I ran my first mile Tuesday.  I was hoping to get one more in today but my groin/hip-flexor/hamstring said no.  :sadbanana:

For the races that happen this spring, what will be the social distancing etiquette? Don’t run in packs and try to stay 6 feet apart when passing?

Yes and likely staggered starts, water bottles (or bring your own), no post race party.
Yep. The 5k I did on new year's was like that. Not exactly staggered starts but a pretty big starting area and stressing the timing mat/ chip starting when you cross so more spread out.

After two weeks off over the holidays, I got back to weights yesterday.  Plan to do 2x weekly.

A pushup is in my future!  I know it!
Can you do one from your knees? I have to think you can do multiples. Just have to commit to it. Do a set of those a day and start to build up to it. Will officially update on Monday but as of yesterday, I've done 560 push ups so far this month, on the way to 2500+.

Impressive!  I almost never make New Year's resolutions, but this year I decided that I would do push ups every day to try to kick start doing more strength training.  No problems making it through the first week, but I am ... um, at significantly less than 560 for the year.

I don't really do th resolution thing either but with trying to get back on the bandwagon of doing what I am suppose to, I kind of got back to running some in the fall and December but not nearly consistent enough. So, I decided to try something different for this year. HM and Marathon goals were my carrots that kept me moving 2 years ago. Last year I didn't really have one and dropped the ball. This year is still up in the air so I'm trying to use a different carrot - basically setting some different short term goals. For January it is 100 push ups and 100 sit ups a day, along with 100 or so miles running for the month. I gave myself a little leeway on the PUs and SUs for a day off or 2 and just rounded down to 2500. Kind of stole it and modified it from @gruecd's challenge he did at one point last year.

Some days I do 20 here, 20, there and get to 100 before bed. One day I did a 20 minute EMOM with 10 push ups one minute, 10 sit ups the next. At some point toward the end of the month, I'm probably going to do them 'for time' and see how fast I can do them. Who knows.

It's been in the 30/40s lately here, but this mornings run was in the high 20s. Just that dipping below freezing was something I could feel in my run, even though it was a recovery run. Legs felt tight/cold and it was just harder getting them going...muscles felt and still feel tight, even though everything else felt relaxed and easy. I need to remember to add a layer to the legs when it dips like this.

What did you wear today? I literally never wear more than tights. It’s 28° right now with a wind chill closer to 20°, and I’m debating if I can get away with wearing shorts...

Shorts, short sleeve t and long sleeve shell (plus gloves and hat, mask is a buff that also helps keep neck and head warm). Everything but the legs felt perfect.

I only have sweat pants. What are some good tights to look at? With or without codpiece.
