2016 Year-end Report

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?
Goal(s) for 2016: To do more local races, run at least a few with my sons, and BQ next December. Volume goal for next year - 75 hours swimming, 125 hours bike, 150 hours run, 50 hours weights
 •    :D Did more local races, a few with my 8yo who got a lot more interested in running; BQ’d in December. Didn’t come close to 75 hours swimming, exceeded the rest.
New accomplishments or PRs in 2016:
 • Marathon @ π (3:14)
 • Half-Marathon (1:30:58)
 • Century Ride (sub 6)
 • Olympic Tri (2:22:29, 1st place military)
 • Sprint Tri (54:04, 1st place 40-44age group)
 • Krispy Kreme challenge!
Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):
 • Rocketman marathon, breaking Boston by ~ 1 second / mile and executing my race strategy to a T
A race or race training disappointment during 2016:
 • Minor injury in April led to a disappointing IM CHOO 70.3; not to mention getting a flat and being unable to fix the damn thing.  but I did finish!
Total training volume during 2016:
 • Swim: 104 Miles / 55.5 hours
 • Bike: 2791.3 miles / 142.5 hours
 • Run: 1624.7 miles / 227 hours
 • 4520 miles / 425 hours
 • ☆ I'm going to take credit, but only here, for walking the dogs every night for the last year, roughly 2 miles so let's round that off, to an estimate, of 480 miles - for a nice 5,000 miles total)
Best memories of other guys’ training or races in 2016:
 • Y’all inspire me but the two that stand out are @SteveC702 running down a dream and @SFBayDuck 100 and getting in to Western States
Oddest or funniest experiences (yours or one of the other guys):
 •   every day is odd and funny.
And let me also say:
 • I  youse guys.
 • It was great to meet @ThreeThousand in chatanooga, good dude.
Goal(s) for 2017:

 • Haven’t really developed this yet.  I’ll stay almost entirely local as we devote 2017 to adopting our daughter from China and bonding with her.  Thankfully, local races include a few epic challenges.
 • Oh yeah, and to retire!

2016 Year End Report

Pretty empty spot this year.  No races.  No centuries.  A pitiful amount on the bike - 2,600miles, 170hrs, 150k ft climbed.  Way under past years.

Only highlight was a 6700 ft, 27 mile continuous climb that ended here.  Definitely a bucket list - spectacular part of the world.

Next year will be better.  Down 6lbs so far.  20ish more to go.  Big plans are Skyway Epic (60 mile MTB race with 7k ft/climbing) and a week long biking extravaganza in Riccione, Italy.

Other folks stuff:

FUBAR beat me to it - Steve chasing the Olympics (hopefully again in 4 years?) and SFBayDuck finally getting his golden ticket.  So does the fact that he got chosen twice mean he gets to run back to the finish?

Onward and upward.

My initial thought would be to run "easy" (which would be slower and slower as the laps added up) and take advantage of the rest time before the next start.  Probably a woefully ignorant strategy though since I know very little about ultras and stuff.
Yeah, really interesting from a strategy perspective. I think the course is pretty easy, in fact it switches from trail loops to road loops during the night. It's not about speed, not about climbing or technical running, it's all about managing to get back to that start line every hour on the hour.

Weird - for the last week my watch has not shown distance or speed (presumably because it wasn't showing distance).  During the runs the display would show "--:-- mph" and at the end 0.00 miles.  So I've just used it as a HRM hoping that the next time I link it to the computer it would update or somehow fix itself - if not, I'd have to try to fix it or look for another.  But today when I plugged it in, the distance and speed for the last few runs all displayed, seemingly accurately.  Right now I'm fine with using it as a HRM and keeping things easy (if I can't see speed I'm less inclined to "push just a little more") but when I start training again I sure hope I can fix this.

Also, I got a ####### flat on my trainer this morning! :wall:   I'm not entirely sure how this happens or how it can be prevented, it's not like I'm running over sharp objects and I haven't changed anything since the last few rides which didn't have flats.

There is a pretty big variance between Garmin Connect and Strava (about 4,000'), but after this morning's effort I'm now officially over 200,000' of elevation gain for the third straight year.

Of course one of my FB friends is pushing to get 600K' right now!  So it's all relative.

2016 Year-end Report

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

“Solid marathon on 1/1” – Check!  See accomplishments below.

“Run a strong Boston” – nope …see disappointment below.  :kicksrock:

“Get back into triathloning – nope …see goals below.

“Run a successful 5K/10K double” – Check!

New accomplishments or PRs in 2016:

A great start to the year with a 3:28:59 marathon in Houston on 1/1 – a PR by 3 ½ minutes, and this was early in my Boston training.  The late 5K/10K double was a new, and interesting, experience.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

The above marathon, where I kept thinking “am I really doing this well?”  I even held back with several miles to go due to some disbelief, and then ran really strong over the final 3 mile stretch.

A race or race training disappointment during 2016:

Boston, where I caught the first warm day of spring after a winter of incredible training.  My head slapping regret is that for all the mental thought put into the race, I hadn’t developed a warm weather scenario, although HR data did cause me to slow down early on, which allowed me to keep running throughout.

Also frustrated by a late summer bone spur that is just now feeling reasonably OK.  A regular fall race season with the injury probably didn’t help.

Total training volume during 2016:

Roughly 1,000 miles due to a scaled back schedule during my summer month in Europe and, then, the bone spur problem.  I haven’t run, now, since my 5K/10K double in late October!  I have just recently gotten back in the pool and had some solid early swims.

Best memories of other guys’ training or races in 2016:

Broken record, here, but following Steve’s epic Olympic pursuit and then Duck’s success in achieving entry into Western States …and seeing the latter live on-line as it occurred.  Also enjoyed Hang 10's great performances throughout the year.

Oddest or funniest experiences (yours or one of the other guys):

Juxt doing his part to curb his neighborhood’s goose population by accidentally (or so he says) causing one to flee into morning traffic.  RIP, goose.

And let me also say:

So cool to meet both Duck and Chief ... both great guys!!  You all are such a great community, and it is always a pleasure to meet face to face.

Goal(s) for 2017:

Get healthy after two years of on and off injuries.  Assuming that happens: Get back into triathloning next summer – Olympic race, and maybe a deep dive right into a half-ironman (which would be my fifth start (and then hopefully third finish).  There are two races to choose from on some of my familiar  turf up in Grand Rapids (mid-June; mid-August).  As to pure running races, I actually don’t have any goals yet!  My old man AG is not too challenging, so it’s not too exciting.  I might work toward a 2018-BQ in late summer, though my broader focus is Boston 2021 when I move to a he’s-still-alive? old man AG.

Merry Christmas eve y'all!

This popped up on my Facebook today, pretty cool read - the year of strava in stats. Yeah, it's a commercial, but cool nonetheless.

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

Reading back, I see that I set two goals.  The first was a sub 18 5K.  I achieved that in March with a 17:50.  I also mentioned running sub 60 for the 10-miler in Philly although I mentioned that was probably over-ambitious.  Well, it was! That didn’t happen!

New accomplishments or PRs in 2016:

Just the 5K. I guess one could say I also PRed the 10-miler although my half marathon PR pace was faster so I don’t think it should count.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

Not surprisingly, the 5K.  For 5Ks, I set my watch to auto-lap every half mile.  I remember several times my pace slipping in the beginning of the lap and each time I was able to dig a little deeper.

A race or race training disappointment during 2016:

My longest standing PR is a 10K that I ran in 2013.  At the time it was my best run from a McMillan calculator standpoint and one of my proudest race moments.  I thought I might never run better than that. Now, however, it’s my weakest PR.  I’ve run faster at least once on a tempo training run and multiple times on a treadmill.   I tried to beat it twice in races this year.  Both times I hardly even considered not being able to PR.  However, I failed both times.  Weather was warm those races but it was certainly a disappointment nevertheless.

Total training volume during 2016:

Currently I’m at 2,523 miles.  That surpasses my previous best set last year at 2,348.  Unfortunately, not much to show for it! After training every day for the Philly race, I spent the summer and fall training without a clear goal or plan.  I had hoped to enter races when I “felt ready” but too many days off and cutting runs short coupled with a too hot and humid summer made me never feel ready.

Best memories of other guys’ training or races in 2016:

pbm being really, really awesome last spring.  SteveC’s Olympic quest.  SteelCurtain and FUBAR having Boston qualifying marathons.  Mac making a huge jump this year and having an awesome 5K.

On the flipside, worst memories were the disappointments in BQs this fall.  I’m happy to read that Hang 10 and Ned will try again this spring.  I hope Mac gets the itch again and joins us.

And let me also say:

Just a thank you for all the likes here on FBGs, the kudos on Strava and, overall, the encouragement you all have given me.  In real life I only have one friend (an Ironman) who fully understands what I do and the sacrifices I make.  To be sure, there are payoffs to this hobby but it’s always a challenge to get out of bed when the alarm goes off and to not bail on runs when things get difficult. Fortunately, I’m driven by a strong sense of guilt and fear of failure (in my mind, anyway) but, in all sincerity, I couldn’t do it without you.

Goal(s) for 2017:

Convince Tri-man to join Strava.

My main goal is to fully commit to marathon training.  A full 18 week schedule for my May marathon starts on January 1.  I hate to take qualifying for Boston for granted but given my old-man handicap, I’m not worried assuming I stay healthy.   Running well isn’t really about the race, it’s about the process before it.   If I’m able to do what I need to do, I should be well positioned to have a shot at a marathon PR as well as PRing some tune-up races.

Mid 70s on Christmas, kinda love it, kinda don't.

Kids got gifts from Santa this morning, we'll open family gifts this afternoon when BIL brings his family over. So in the meantime, got a nice hour run in.  Decided I'm doing nothing but MAF plus swimming for next couple weeks, maybe into February.  This year will be heavily running I think, just won't really have the time to devote to riding.  Of course, that might change.

Ran on the treadmill today and did some upper body at the gym.  Upper 70s and my cold is finally gone.  Might go for a run tonight, but definitely in the morning.

You know, if there was ever a group of us that wanted to do an Ultra together, something like this would be ideal.    If a number of you would want to do this, I'd seriously consider it.
Normally, I would try to make this happen, but its the weekend after Chicago marathon so I can't do it this year.

Maybe one of the "run thru Hell" medals from Dances With Dirt?

We did all spend some time together at their place this afternoon.  I could get used to this.
Time to get a Baby Jogger so you can take the little one out on runs with you.  My kids loved it when they were younger.

2016 Year-end Report

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

Run my first 100 miler (achieved) and become more consistent with health/diet (see disappointment).

New accomplishments or PRs in 2016:

50 mile PR:  11:05

First 100 mile:  27:22

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

I guess I'd have to say finishing my first 100, as it had been on my mind for the better part of two years.  The fact that I struggled pretty badly during the first 50 miles and rallied during the final 50 miles made it feel even better.

A race or race training disappointment during 2016:

Not necessarily race or training, but I really wanted to get my diet in line in 2016 as I've always struggled greatly with sugar/carbs and my dad is diabetic so long-term that's a huge concern for me.  I did a great job during the middle part of the year in reducing my sugar/carb intake and increasing consumption of healthy fats.  No disappointment there, but I've completely fallen off the wagon over the past three months.  I've run very little and my diet is beyond horrible.   Such a terribly disappointing way to end the year.

Total training volume during 2016:

I don't have this on hand, but I think I'll end the year on the drastically lower side of what I wanted (1100-1200 miles-ish)?  A bulk of that was in April-September, with extremely low mileage early and late in the year.

Best memories of other guys’ training or races in 2016:

My best memories are similar to what others have mentioned though particularly @SFBayDuck  getting drawn for his shot at WSER glory.  The lottery was exciting to watch.  But honestly what I've enjoyed most is seeing the level of perseverance here amongst everyone that posts.  That goes from the elite (Steve's Olympic chase), to posters starting running for the first time, to everyone chipping in with possible solutions for those in need of injury/health/other advice.  This is an incredible and inspiring community.

Oddest or funniest experiences (yours or one of the other guys):

 Pooptastrophe 2016

And let me also say:

Though I don't post enough to be one of the "regulars," the level of openness that the regulars exude is awesome.  Definitely makes you feel welcome no matter how much you're in the thread.

Goal(s) for 2017:

I've been giving this a lot of thought lately.  I'm going to kick sugar/carb addiction once and for all.  I feel so crappy when I'm consuming sugar and so great when I'm not that it's all about having the discipline to stick to a healthy lifestyle.  Motivation comes and goes, but discipline doesn't once you can establish it.  I've gone from a college-esque low of 178lbs in early September to a lethargic 192lbs currently.  Time to get disciplined and stay disciplined.

Secondly, I'm now in the "need to run Western States" camp with an itch that needs to be scratched.  With limited local qualifying options, I'm going to give a go of the Kettle Moraine 100 in Wisconsin in early June in lieu of running the Superior 100 again in September.  If all else was equal, I'd run the Superior 100 without a second thought. Love love love that trail. But with the training time requirement and two young children, I figure it best to incur the heavy training over the February to May timeframe when the weather here is mediocre and then be able to enjoy the summer with the family than to put another year of heavy training in during the prime summer months of June through August for a September race.  Running 100 mile races is a bit selfish, so I'm attempting to mitigate that selfishness just a bit.

The Kettle Moraine 100 is a far more runnable race than the Superior 100 with something like 9000 feet each of elevation gain and loss.  I'm more of a grinder as pure running is not my strongsuit so I'll aim for a finish first and foremost, and then hope I can do it in the 24-26 hour range.

Happy Holidays to all and have a safe and enjoyable New Year!

Managing with a really tight hamstring.  not sure if its from a hill workout or me trying to stretch it too far during my stretching exercises.

Regardless, lots of very slow running .  Nearly 3 minutes/mile slower than MP (if you have been on strava, you have seen the slow paces.)  I don't want to have to shut it down over this week when I can run outside in the daylight.  Once 2017 comes, if it continues, I'll likely shut it down for a week or two to fully heal.

Awww yeah!

looking at my time from a tough early season race i've run the last few years. 15k over a course with several steep, long hills. my favorite race but also the most grueling.

i finished 3 seconds behind a 62 year old woman in 2016

i'm going to find that old bag and run her down this year

2016 Year-end Report

Your goals coming into the year and were they achieved?

Boston Marathon goal was 3:40, which at the time I thought was soft, and I wanted to run a fall marathon and shoot for a BQ. Also wanted to run a sub-20 5K. I was 0 for 3.

New accomplishments or PRs in 2016:

3:56 marathon (90 second PR)

20:08 5k (30 second PR)

1:11:56 10M

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

Best race was the 10M five weeks before Boston. I was hesitant to run it but glad I ended up doing so, it gave me something to hang my hat on for the training cycle after the marathon went in the crapper. 10 miles at 7:10 pace was something I couldn’t have dreamed of a couple of years ago. I still like to go back to that Strava page (https://www.strava.com/activities/514953147 ) and relive that one, so solid and consistent. It had me thinking a 3:30 Boston was possible. Also proud of at least getting a small PR at Boston given how early in the race I started feeling like ####. Most painful couple of hours of my life but I kept moving forward.

A race or training disappointment in 2016:

Marathon, obviously. I know I had a good race in me but it was just a bad ####### day get go. I was hell bent on redeeming myself in a fall marathon but never got there. Also pissed about not getting the sub-20 5K. When I ran the 20:08 I went to the race intending to just watch my daughter run but a buddy bailed last minute and I jumped in with his bib. Wasn’t fully-committed mostly because I wasn’t running as “me” but still got close. I know I had it in me, was looking for a 5K to race over the next several weeks following that one, then I got hurt and never got it done.

Total training volume in 2016:

1,126 miles through July, and around 20 miles since. Lots of additional non-running hours in the gym pre-injury and since. I still eat like a 40M/week runner but haven't gained a lb., so I know I'm working hard. Not as fun though.

Best memories of other guys’ training or races in 2016:

Duck winning the lottery

Ned getting his mojo back, like we knew he would

SteveC traveling the globe to chase a dream

Mac activating his glutes and crushing all distances

FUBAR and SteelCurtain’s BQs

Meeting everyone’s hero Tri-Man the day before Boston

And in general getting on the Strava train and following the likes of Juxt, Hang, Chief and everyone else…the camaraderie in there, and in this thread, really was what made me get out there when I didn’t feel like it.

Oddest or funniest experience  (yours or one of the other guys):

I guess the post-marathon spectacle of getting wheeled in an office chair through the Boston Sports Club, through a gym crowded with Offdee 7 – 9s and my son mocking me as I went, and being unceremoniously dumped in the sauna to get my body temp up.

And let me also say:

I kind of feel like a ##### complaining about the knee, and a couple of missed racing goals. I keep reminding myself to be thankful that my heart is in good shape. I have a couple of good years of running to thank for getting my health turned around, and if it killed my knees and I can’t run anymore so be it - it was worth it.

Goal(s) for 2017:

I have an apt next week with the surgeon to decide what we’re going to do. I hope to get surgery around March 1, won’t know until he gets in there if it’s fixable. If so it will be 8 weeks no weight-bearing then rehab. Really hoping I get that chance. If so my goal will be to ease back into running again and maybe get a few 5Ks in 2nd half of the year. If not I need to find another hobby.

Oh, please.  We all know that you placed yourself there and watched her ### for 10 miles.

(That's something we know tri-man would do, but he's busy on baby duty.)
Absolutely (about the in-race stalking)!

Race reports - how did I forget Say What's pooptastrophe??  Epic.

More importantly, can't believe I forgot to acknowledge also meeting Nigel back in April at Boston.  Here also - great guy, and SO kind of him to selflessly drop off my bag ..way on the other side of the commons.  Nigel, I hope things work out for you.  Don't feel pressured by this thread to rush back into things. In the long view, it would be awesome for you to run Boston again - even if that's several years from now - when your son is a young man and will truly appreciate how great an accomplishment it is to run that race.  It doesn't get any better than having your children proudly post on FB about their old man's running success.

2016 Year-end Report

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

I did not have specific time-based goals with no comparable races or racing history, just wanted to stay on track with training, improve my adherence to training, improve my eating, sleeping and training habits and finish any race I entered.  I also wanted to run more races so I had more races to measure myself against in 2017.  I achieved these goals with a solid year of running (most for me ever but I had no prior consistent training history).  This group motivated me daily - even as a minimal poster I love reading and learning from your experience and energy.  I had a couple race/training benchmarks from 2015 that I expected to pummel in 2016 with more training which I did.

New accomplishments or PRs in 2016:

More races and more miles and more pleasure from running.  Wanted to be sub 1 hr 50 mins in a half and not get crushed over miles 10-13.  I succeeded thanks to more 10+ mile training runs.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

Proudest of my training for a hilly 10 mile run in August with a lot of training on hilly segments of course and long training runs in the heat.  Was able to finish strong and have fun.

Also ran a 7k (I think) trail race that was very cool and will be something I want to do more of.  Some seemingly cool trail runs north/west of Baltimore that I will try to hit in spring and fall if other runs don’t overlap.

A race or race training disappointment during 2016:

I lost focus around mile 11 on a little hill at the Baltimore half marathon and lost a fair amount of time.  I was able to pull it together for a strong last mile or so for a strong finish.

Total training volume during 2016:

I don’t have a total on the treadmill miles from early and late in 2016 but my guess would be another 100 or primarily doing intervals in the first couple months of the year.

400 strava miles on 80 runs

Runs over 10 miles - 8

Runs over 8 miles  - 13

Max miles in month - 63

Max runs in month – 13

Best memories of other guys’ training or races in 2016:

The trail runner recaps are most memorable and motivate me to try to get to longer races in cooler places.  Also gives me a sense of enjoying the experience of both training and racing with less of a focus on just ‘time’.

Oddest or funniest experiences (yours or one of the other guys):

You guys are way more fun than me.

And let me also say and Goal(s) for 2017:

Stay on track training over the winter with mainly indoor strength and agility stuff with some treadmill and longer outside runs on the weekend.  Been doing an increasing volume of KB press and swings program to knock the rust of my strength training efforts.

Will need to force myself to hit the road and trails in Jan/Feb in order to be ready for a few races in late March/early April around DC and Baltimore.  Targeting my first marathon in October at the Marine Corp Marathon in October.  I can improve/ensure entry by completing a 17k race in March so that’s goal 1.  Cherry Blossom 10m is a week or so after then maybe a trail half marathon in late April.  After that push I want to reassess the summer and target the Annapolis 10 mile race in August and maybe another trail race during training for the marathon in October.

Going to need a lot more miles to be ready – should be able to log 1000 miles on strava which would be cool.

Go get some!

Are you in the Strava group?  I'm not keeping good track (and honestly I have a hard time tracking alias to names for some folks).

I think his initials are SM. Only Maryland I found. If I am wrong correct me though. Welcome, aboard

@pbm107 I'm cautiously optimistic that I'll be able to join you for the Shamrock marathon. Past 2 weeks my ankle has felt pretty decent. Worse comes to worse and I suffer a setback, I think I'm going target the Coastal Delaware Running Festival marathon at the end of April but I'd rather stay home and run with a fellow FBG. ;)

If only there was a way to add your board name to the end of your name on there..........
Yeah. I'm not adding my alias to my strava name which my Facebook friends  (including mom) can see.  Not that many are on, but they could be.

Awesome news on the ankle. On my end I am liking my chances of getting a BQ time  at Shamrock.
