Was there ever any doubt?

You think you can get into <3:05 shape by March?
That is the time I put down in the race registration. We will see how the training goes.  I was in pretty bad shape in the beginning of the month and am happy with my progress so far.

Yeah, I'm sure after 2 more solid months of training you'll be ready to roll.

I've been pleasantly surprised with my speed and HR on my easy runs with as little as I've run the past 2 months. It's definitely better than this time last year. Feel like if I can just get a couple 20 milers in, I'll be back in BQ shape.

Yeah. I'm not adding my alias to my strava name which my Facebook friends  (including mom) can see.  Not that many are on, but they could be.
Just add your avatar.  That's much better.   :D

Ed Whitlock does it again.  He completed the Toronto Marathon in 3:56.  Not bad for an 85 year old.  Interestingly in the article he was measured to have a VO2max of 54, which for 85 is just astounding.  That number is higher than most in this thread would hit.

2016 Year-end Report

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

I didn’t really have any time goals for 2/3 races – the only one I had was at IM Chattanooga which was to go sub-11.  That didn’t happen as the heat just absolutely destroyed me (and everyone else)

New accomplishments or PRs in 2016:

There wasn’t a new PR in any full race, or actually any segment within a race.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

Proudest of my run at IM Louisville – it was only 2 weeks after Chattanooga so I was worried about how much juice I’d have in the legs.  After the one hill out of transition I knew it was going to be a good run.  The weather was perfect, and the course is flat - was able to run the full marathon (4:03:57).

A race or race training disappointment during 2016:

The big disappointment for me was IM Florida.  A week before the race, I started having massive abdominal pain, to the point where I went to the emergency room.  After staying overnight, tons of tests, they could find nothing wrong.  Pain continued the week of the race and I had to DNS IMFL as I just couldn’t keep anything down that had any sort of fat in it (I was consuming white rice, bread, and bananas).  The initial thought was the gall bladder, but we ended up taking my son to the emergency room the following week, and we think we both had a bad virus.  No pain since.  Huge bummer since I get to race with a couple high school friends only once or twice a year, and this was going to be the capstone to 2016 for me.

Total training volume during 2016:

2016 volume:

Swim 56:24:56 – 162,150 meters

Bike 582:55:22 – 11,703.13 miles

Run 127:57:01 – 945.17 miles

2015 volume:

Swim 76:33:59 – 221,649 meters

Bike 547:58:44 – 10,528.38 miles

Run 108:13:37 – 784.03 miles

Best memories of other guys’ training or races in 2016:

Loved hearing about Steve’s Olympic pursuits, and Duck’s insanity.

Oddest or funniest experiences (yours or one of the other guys):

None for me, at least compared to being danced at on a training run a few years ago.

And let me also say and Goal(s) for 2017:

Goals for 2017 – 3 IM like 2016 was supposed to have, to get to 9 overall finishes.  Finish all with a (relative) smile, while running the full marathon in each.

What a year - from new runners/racers getting a taste to old pros with PRs, IMs, 100 milers, and Olympic pursuits!  I see a lot in the news about 2016 being such a tough year, but we sure ran against the grain with tons of successes (and lesson-learning frustrations) as well as great day-to-day camaraderie in here.  Kudos, gentlemen!   :hifive:    :banned:

YTD:

B: 88x / 136 hrs / 2687 miles

R: 222x / 212 hrs / 1,514 miles

S: 70x /  54 hrs /  177,300 yds

ST: 69x

A little bit of a downswing from October but that was planned.  Rocket city on Saturday, after that I might take the rest of the month off. They say it's wise to take a few weeks off each year, so maybe this year I'll actually do it.  Or maybe I'll do a few hundred on the bike and make it to 3k on the year.
December:

B: 7x / 7 hrs / 114 miles

R: 30x  /  40 hrs /  233.7 miles

S: 2x / 2.5 hrs / 8900 yards

ST: 8x

YTD:

B: 95x / 143 hrs / 2801 miles

R: 247x / 236 hrs / 1,681.1 miles

S: 72x /  56.5 hrs /  186,200 yds (105.8 miles)

ST: 77x

Total for the year - 491x / 435.5 hrs / 4,587.9 miles

Next year will be fewer miles with more running.  I think I'll aim for 2,500 miles (I almost wrote 3,000 but that seems too much).  Starting the year with pure MAF, we'll see how that goes.

Hell of a way to end the year as far as running goes. Tore my quad running today. Was running a 5k and was about a mile in when it felt like I got stabbed. Stopped me dead in my tracks. I could barely walk the rest of the way. Pretty upsetting.

   hope you find it wasn't really torn, but damn.  Downhill or were you just pushing too hard?

Dang ...not fun at all. :kicksrock:   Be patient with it.

2015 Year-end Report

A location you’d love to explore via running:

More real mountains. Colorado, Utah, the Sierras, the Cascades. I'd like to get some more experience at altitude and be better prepared for handling what the mountains can throw at you, as the idea of Hardrock or UTMB or something similar is gaining momentum in my mind.

Goal(s) for 2016:

Broken record, but qualifying for the Western States lottery again, at The Canyons 100K in May.

100 miler in the late summer/early fall

365 hours of training/racing
2016 Year-end Report

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

   Well, two out of three ain't bad.  I ended up short of the volume goal thanks to a pretty light early year (injury) and fall.  But I got that qualifier at Canyons 100K, ran my second 100M at Cascade Crest in August, and capped the year with that Western States 100 entry.

New accomplishments or PRs in 2016:

No race PRs.  But I did accomplish the goal above of spending more time in the mountains.  I ran in the foothills of the Wasatch outside Salt Lake City; over 7000' up in Flagstaff, AZ; a week in Colorado around and on the Hardrock 100 course, including my first 14er at Handies Peak; along cliffs above Durango, CO; and on the rocks and sand of Moab, UT.  And then of course 100 miles on the trails of the Cascades east of Seattle in August.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

Probably Canyons 100k, in terms of executing my race plan pretty much from start to finish.  But crossing the finish line of a 100 miler is pretty tough to beat.

A race or race training disappointment during 2016:

I was a little bummed to not get a 100 mile PR at Cascade Crest, because I know I had it in me that day if I had better managed my nutrition and hydration.  But each one of these things is a learning experience, and I hope I'm in a position to put it all together this year.

Total training volume during 2016:

It's strange that Garmin and Strava are off by almost 40 miles, but I'll go with the lower Garmin Connect as that's what I've used in the past.

1,562 miles

341+ hours

207,659' of elevation gain

Best memories of other guys’ training or races in 2016:

There are a lot, and of course Steve's Olympic chase stands out.  But for somewhat obvious reasons I'm sure, it'd have to be @SayWhat? crushing his first 100 miler.

Oddest or funniest experiences (yours or one of the other guys):

Poop stories.  It's always poop stories.

And let me also say:

While we didn't go on a run together, it was great to finally meet a couple of you when @tri-man 47 and @Juxtatarot drove into Chicago to have a quick dinner with me.  I hope to meet more of you this year!  Maybe in Tahoe in June?

I'm also pretty humbled at how many of you guys mentioned me just getting into a race as a highlight of the year.  Pretty damned cool community we've got going up in here.

Goal(s) for 2017:

In June of 2012 I crewed and paced my buddy Jim at Western States, and running that race became my singular focus.  Here we are almost five years and a handful of 50Ks, three 50Ms, two 100Ks, and two 100Ms later, and in 2017 I'll finally have my chance.  So my goal is to show up in Squaw trained, healthy, and ready to execute the best race I can on my way to Auburn.  #seeyouinsquaw

If I don't see any more improvement by the new year, I'm going to go see a dr since I don't want to get back on the road until it's 100% again.
Did you schedule a doctor's appointment? I was hoping to see a run on Strava from you.

I am happy to say I did the Zimmerman triple crown again in 2016. This means I have completed every Zimmerman triple crown since its inception  I believe 2016 was the fifth one.

2016 is the year I started trying to run by heart rate. I believe I started this in March and I can not say I am overly impressed with the results. I do not feel there has been much improvement in my speed at all. In all fairness I probably have not put enough miles in to really see the benefits. I did just under 500 miles this year and some of that includes hiking.

I will continue running by heart rate as I do enjoy the ability to go further without feeling like I am going to die. At the same time it is painful when I compare my pace to others.

My goal for 2017 is to break into more trail running. I have found I enjoy the adventure and scenery of the trails. I also feel my pace lends itself to trails and I wont feel so bad about being slower if I am out on a trail.

I'll be running on Thursday.  I ain't running in that rain and screw the dreadmill. Chalking it up to two more rest days.     :porked:

Managing with a really tight hamstring.  not sure if its from a hill workout or me trying to stretch it too far during my stretching exercises.

Regardless, lots of very slow running .  Nearly 3 minutes/mile slower than MP (if you have been on strava, you have seen the slow paces.)  I don't want to have to shut it down over this week when I can run outside in the daylight.  Once 2017 comes, if it continues, I'll likely shut it down for a week or two to fully heal.
Hamstring is getting better.  Slowly but surely.

I'm running faster each day but still can't go within a min of MP.  Slow and steady progress

Need to get back into running more than I have been.  Same with the wife.  And now the boys (8 and 10) run track and one runs cross country so they want to be running more now as well.  With lovely PA winter weather, that means I need to get a new treadmill.

We have an old treadmill (11+ years old) that isn't working anymore.  It was a Vision Fitness Simple 80 model that served me well in the early days.  Now it keeps giving me an error saying that the elevation sensor thinks it isn't down all the way so it won't run.  I go into diagnostics and get it to raise fully and lower fully, then try to run an auto-calibration (it's what the manufacturer said to do).  In the past that fixed it, but now it won't complete the auto-cal.  I think it's dead, Jim.  At this point, I don't know if it is worth me trying to hire a repairperson to fix it considering the age and that it was the lowest model available at the time.  Is this the wrong conclusion?

Anyway, I've been looking for treadmills online that can get us through the crappy weather months and be there for times where I just can't train outside due to darkness/schedule/whatever.  My research so far has narrowed down to a few different lines, and I was hoping to get some insight here from the collective wisdom.  I'm trying to keep a hard cap of $1500 on the spend if at all possible.  Here are some of the models/makes I've narrowed down to:

NordicTrack Commercial 1750 - seems well reviewed overall, but if there are problems apparently Cust Svc blows.  Costs $1500 for current model, may be able to find last year's for a little less.

ProForm Pro 2000 - Similarly well rated as above, current model comes in about $1300.

ProForm Premier 1300 - slightly less beefy than the ones above, but apparently better options with some upgrades compared to the rest of the Premier line.  Can get this for $1000 through Costco until they sell out.

Sole Models - The F63, F65, F80 all are within my price range.  Seems these are well built but definitely behind the curve when it comes to features.

Does anyone have any experience with any of these or recommendations on brands I have overlooked?  Want to get this wrapped up sooner rather than later.

I know nothing about treadmills.  However, Consumer Reports (or maybe it was the January issue of Runner's World) just did a review of them in the last couple months.  If you check at a local library, they may have old issues.  If I find mine, I'll DM you and can send you the reviews.

Meeting with the surgeon today to work out a plan for my knee. I was hoping the cortisone shot I got last month would buy me some time and get me running but it really didn't help much. In the meantime I'm in a nice groove now with the Peloton spin workouts and really enjoying them. I've got them linked to Strava now so feeling like I'm part of the group again with some accountability. Sure would be fun if one of you fellas had one to get some competition going...highly recommend it if anyone is considering it. My wife is using it daily and all three of my kids are also getting on it. Pricey but we're getting our bang for the buck. So much more fun than the eliptical, where just 30 min is a mental grind. Feeling like an athlete again.

Do they have someone come out and properly fit you on it?  We've been tempted.

Save your money and run outside.  Treadmills are 1b to water boarding.

I appreciate running outside, trust me.  But there are three other people in my house, my schedule doesn't always permit it, and once we start getting ice around here I know that it is not smart for me to do so as I've gotten injured before trying it.  I genuinely appreciate the links to gear to help with that, but it isn't a solution to all of the issue.  My wife and boys are NOT going to be running outside when the weather is less than 70% ideal.  That being said, any info on actual treadmills will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Do they have someone come out and properly fit you on it?  We've been tempted.
They come out and set it up for you, seat height is easily adjustable so fit is not an issue. Works just as well for my 10 yr old as it does me. The bike quality is top notch, very comfortable ride. Thought it would take my ### some getting used to but no discomfort at all.

Days like today are the stressful part of trying to run outside in winter though.  Long range forecast calls for a fury of days in the 20's (or less) and the wind will be howling.  Today it's in the 40's.  But it's raining.  Will I run in the frigid stuff?  Absolutely, but if I can move more miles to the 40-some degree temp's I absolutely will.  i.e. my body had no interest in running yesterday, but at 43, cloudy, and no wind I told it to shut the #### up we're doing a recovery run.  Anyway, today...it looks like there will be a window or two without, but when will it open?  I'm just going to leave the radar map tab open all day until I see it.  I get that some don't have a job with that luxury, but it's one big reason I haven't left (yet).

Given the age, a replacement seems to be in order.  I know nothing about treadmills ...but I do appreciate the great savings on everything via Costco.  In terms of bang for your buck, that Costco model seems appealing ...if the features fit your needs/desires.  You'll get great use out of it with a house full of runners!

Have had a brutal cold for three weeks - both in the chest and head. Just when my gut starts feeling better.

Had my soccer game last Tuesday, then followed it up with a test run last Wednesday. Couldn't breathe in either and really knocked me back. Feeling better today, so a soccer game tonight followed by a run tomorrow to see what happens.

1/2 marathon training starts now, so I hope I am good to good. Last two months have been brutal. Soul crushing to be honest.

Knee is good enough that I am doing some light running.  Really it's a walk/run sort of deal.  I am experimenting with some braces that might help take some pressure off the medial side, which is where my troubles are.  I have no pain on the outside.

It feels good to be back at it, limited as it is.  I am at 199 lbs.  I really need to be at <185 and it's so hard to get there without running 50+ mpw.  It's harder on the knee at 199.

this Peloton thing really took off of late.  all of a sudden i know 5 people that are doing it.
That thing is so tempting.  I got the Cycleops Fluid trainer a few years ago and like it enough.  Only problem is that is still a little on the loud side.  We have a small house and I'd wake up everyone doing it at 5 am.

My wife really likes riding the bike too, but hates changing out bikes on the trainer.  Seems like this would solve both our issues (excuses).

I think the live classes and the competition aspect of it would be ideal for both of us.

$2k to get started...just can't pull that trigger.

So these things are, what, $1500 plus $40/month for the video feed, right?

More like $2K with delivery, set up, etc. which are not optional. A huge nut but I'm certain now that it was worth it for us. If you get two or more people in your household using it it gets easier to rationalize.

Thats my rationale here....$40, but it goes for my wife too.  She mostly stays at home and has a 4 yo tethered to her.  Getting out and running or biking in her situation is difficult.

How long have you had yours @Nigel

Agree with many of you about treadmills, but for someone who is newer to running (like myself), I find it helps me with consistency over miles.  I also do intervals on it too.  Good times.

I haven't posted in this thread in eons.  This past year ended up being 1800-something miles, with an average slightly over 35 mpw.  I got in 104 runs of ten or more miles, and 13 runs of 15 or longer which I think is decent for a year of no races longer than a half.  My wife and I did a race series in Minneapolis that had us running our first two ten-mile races ever.  I'm extremely happy to have finished the second in 1:15:xx, which included having to stop for a ####### shoe-lace.  That was a near perfect race for me other than the whole needing to tie my shoe thing.  Also a god-awful half in July, but that was due to July.

Of more immediate interest, I switched careers from being "just" a professor to 100% administration last year.  That means no more running at 9 or 10 in the morning except as a rare outlier.  Instead, it's like everybody else, getting up at 4:30 or so every morning to get in the miles before work.  Actually earlier than that when I do my midweek 10-miler.  This change was pretty easy during the summer and fall, but it's been a little bit of a grind this winter.  I have a ton of cold weather gear, but that doesn't matter when it's 10 degrees with 20 mph winds.  There's just no good way to dress for that -- wildly sub-zero wind chills and frostbite into the wind, melting with the wind.  So it's been the treadmill or track for me for the better part of the past few months. The lack of variety and especially lack of quiet alone time is getting annoying.  In other words, this winter has sucked so far and I am in despair of not getting more outdoor time.

That thing is so tempting.  I got the Cycleops Fluid trainer a few years ago and like it enough.  Only problem is that is still a little on the loud side.  We have a small house and I'd wake up everyone doing it at 5 am.

My wife really likes riding the bike too, but hates changing out bikes on the trainer  Seems like this would solve both our issues (excuses).

I think the live classes and the competition aspect of it would be ideal for both of us.

$2k to get started...just can't pull that trigger.
Agreed on all.  I want a Peloton but can't justify the expense at this time.  Maybe next year.

Hamstring is getting better.  Slowly but surely.

I'm running faster each day but still can't go within a min of MP.  Slow and steady progress
Good to hear. I currently am doing calf stretches like it's a cigarette habit.  Every hour or so, sitting on the edge of a chair and leaning into my foot propped against a table leg or edge with the leg locked straight. Lean in left shoulder for ten.  Lean in right shoulder for ten.  Repeat. My guy has me doing more active stretches - slowly rocking instead of long stretch holds. I think my left leg (healthy one) might benefit from this too.

It will take a little time to see if there are results but I walked out of his office in less discomfort than I went in today. Hopefully that's a good sign.

The current theory is nerve entrapment and we're trying to get those fibers to go up and down more smoothly.
