Honestly, it's the first 1/2 mile that pisses you off. After that you are good and warmed up.
last winter, on a particularly brutal day, i wore two pair of gloves and had the same thought... they'll warm up. after 1/2 they were seriously starting to freeze but i kept going with the idea that they would warm up.

hit the mile mark and thought "if i don't turn around now.. i'm losing fingers"

made it home running as fast as i possibly could, hopping through the snow, skidding on the ice.... and had to fight to unlock the door. nothing was working from mid-palm up. like.. not bending at all. got in and stuck my hands under lukewarm water for about 20 minutes before things started to get right again.

not fun times

 Been there, although you've probably run in more extreme temps than I have.

One thing that helps my hands is moving them.  I think keeping them in a fist restricts the blood flow since you're not using them.  I'll randomly open/close them to the beat of my running cadence for a few minutes to keep the blood flowing.   :2cents:

Big fan of the icy surfaces.  A little risky?  Absolutely, but once I learned how to run on them I think all of my running has benefited.  Form has become naturally tighter, balance is improved, more muscle usage has increased strength in critical areas...overall, I think running on it is a big reason (knock on wood) I've stayed healthier recently.  Plus once you've adapted to running on the ice nothing feels miserable anymore.  Except running after 4 days of binge eating/drinking over Christmas.  That's always miserable.
really does wonders for your balance. seems to strengthen all those little muscles around your ankles. at least so far as i can tell.

my ankles can bench like 315

yes, that's one thing i learned for sure.

though, on that day i was flapping them like a baby bird and slamming them on my legs to improve flow.

now i wear a much thicker second pair on bad days..... like today.

Testing myself with a Half tomorrow.  I know I haven't put in the training to actually have a decent time....hoping for 2:15.  I'd be happy with that.   I've done this race at 1:57.

Weather : 21 at degrees at the gun, 23 at 9am.  Wind Chill is at 10.  15mph wind.

but I run at 6 AM and I can't see which steps are icy are which are not.

<-- Not a black ice skeptic

went out on Wednesday after the kids went to bed

was somewhere between -15 and -25 depending on the wind gust, apparently.

i wore:

1 pair thick dri-fit socks

1 pair line tights

1 pair C9 pants

1 pair New Balance wind-breaker pants

3 long sleeve shirts

1 jacket

1 headband

2 balaclava (1 thin, one thicker over the top that i could remove if need be)

2 pair gloves (1 pair regular running gloves, 1 pair thick winter gloves)

was warm throughout. ran about 4 miles before i called it. all those clothes really limit the flexibility and the cold air makes it harder overall. probably would have kept going but it was past 9 PM and i wanted to be home.
This is insane.  Good for you still getting it done, but I can't even comprehend that temperature.  I've been in CT in January when it was a few degrees below zero for the week I was there, and I could barely breathe when I was outside.

This morning I waited until almost 9:00 to go run, since it was down to about 29 degrees last night and I wanted it to warm up a bit.  Still some icy spots out there on the trails, but not bad at all - took off my gloves and beanie about a mile in.

This is insane.
that's what my wife says

the way i figure is "i won't be able to contain myself if i don't" and "i'll warm up eventually".

actually makes the long* runs easier, i think. i don't overheat. not trying to run too fast. keeps my breathing focused.

*relative to your long runs. which are actually insane  ;)

I'm not a runner, but am looking to get in shape.  What resources do you guys find helpful?
@wazoo11 - We're very biased, but this thread is a great place, though the assumption is that you are considering running as a means of getting in shape.  In that regard: Obviously a number of experienced (=insane) athletes here who run, bike, swim, and lift, but a number of newer runners+ swing by as well and get lots of support and advice ...and we love hearing of their successes.  You can find a number of links on page 1 of this thread (mostly running related).  Otherwise, feel free to post away!  Let us know what you've done, what you're thinking of doing, and what questions you have.

Admire the dedication...you training for something?

 we used to do this in Michigan, in college.  But now?  There's a reason we're in Alabama where they close everything down when it's 20 degrees with a chance of snow (which happened today - no snow)

Yeah we're expecting a rain storm this weekend in the Bay Area, and the lines at Safeway tonight were like people expecting the zombie apocalypse and buying all the canned goods and batteries.  It is supposed to drop 8'-12" on us with some 40-60 mph wind gusts, but it's not like a hurricane is heading our way or anything.

I hope, anyway.......  :scared:

Should make for an interesting weekend to try and get some runs in.  I have to fly to Vegas Sunday night through Wednesday night, and with a work agenda that runs 7:30 AM to 9:00 PM every day, and the inevitable "networking" in the evenings means training may not occur much, so I don't want to take zeros the next two days.  But there is a reason I mapped out the official start of my WS100 training plan as the following Monday.

Seriously, Duck - hotels are great for extended lunges up and down the hallway.  Or just some pool running.  Or use the stairways for surrogate hill training.  Then again, call them rest days and drink away.

I went to the mall and bought my first pair of running shoes!

Welp, Jackson MS can't handle winter weather.  We got a lot of freezing rain and sleet yesterday then temps started dropping and everything has a quarter inch of ice on it.  The Blues marathon got cancelled last night.

has there been any discussion of methods to de-stinkify my running clothes?

washed last night and they still smell like i just finished a mid-afternoon summer run at the equator

Buy a small ozone generator - sometimes called a fruit washer. Put the stank clothes in a plastic tub along with the ozone gadget. Run for 20-30mins covered. Turn it off and open tub outside to let it air out.

Ozone will kill the odor. It is harmful to breathe in so don't let it air out indoors.  It can also destroy rubber and elastic so limit the number of times you do it or else your waiste bands will fall apart.

Its totally safe to do if you keep it to short periods of time. I use it all the time on my hunting gear.

That lukewarm water trick works for frozen peens too.

For technical fabrics like Dri-Fit, I always use a detergent meant for them like Nikwax or Nathan Penguin.  That seems to help with the odor.

For regular clothes, we just throw a half cup of baking soda into the washer with the detergent.  We buy the 13.5 lb bag from Costco and keep that by the washer.

Same ice here.  I just spent the last hour sliding down frozen roads with my kid.

I've got a looooong stride today!

35 here this morning (this might be a high temp today for some of you).  Date with dreadmill at the gym later.  10k in BFE 2 weeks from today.

Hamstring/butt area is still tender but slowly getting better.

Pleased I grinded out 8 miles yesterday and another 10 today with both windchills around 10 degrees.  Just trying to tread water here with my fitness until March and there is light and warmer temps.

I'll lift and hit the stairmaster at the gym for an hour tomorrow.  Wish there was a way for Strava to give me credit!

You can manually enter it as a workout in the activity type field.

Yup.  My dreadmill activity doesn't carry over to Strava (seems like only GPS stuff does) from my Fitbit devices so I enter it manually.  It also then pushes stuff back to Fitbit so then I have to delete the duplicate entry.  Weird.

Just got kind of blindsided at my cardiologist appt. The EKG showed I'm in a state of atrial flutter, similar to afib but without the soaring heart rates. not sure how long it's been going on. Been feeling great, haven't noticed it.

So I need to get back on blood thinner and beta blocker immediately, come in next week for a cardioversion (knock me out, shock my heart) to get me back in sinus rhythm, then think about when to get another ablation. Without it this will likely progress back to the recurring bouts of afib I had before. I guess all of this is not too uncommon, but pretty disappointing. I'd thought enough time had passed to deem the first ablation a complete success but apparently not.

it's crushing to get this kind of news. Sorry man.   Good that you are ahead of it, but an unexpected setback nonetheless.  Be patient. Be thankful that you are staying on top of your heart and get better.

Here’s an update of where I’m at in my rehab process.

Recap of the old prob: Running causes pain in the back of right calf.  No running, no pain.  More running, more pain.  Historically, if I did more than ½ mile of running (or soccer etc), I’d know it the next day. Usually no pain while running, but when I got up to 4 to 6 miles, there was a good chance I’d feel a tear like a muscle pull during the run.  Always the same spot – outside upper corner of right calf.   Usually the pain comes in 2 forms – (1) dull aching pain that lasts through the day and remain for 3 to 6 days after a run and (2) acute pain like a muscle tear or pull that would rear its head when getting out of car or stepping weird.  Neither of the pains were ever severe; just constant reminders that running was making things worse.  Had this problem forever (20+ years now) and it’s never really changed no matter what I’ve tried.

I started working with a new MD in October to fix a lingering ankle problem, which he did. Once ankle problem was resolved, we started to tackle the calf in December.  His working diagnosis is peroneal nerve entrapment.  I started up running again in December.  Nice thing is that the plantar flexion exercises I was doing for my ankle (see yoga ankle reclining) helped reduce the dull aching pain with running.  (Progress?!).  So now when I run, I’m good while running for the most part as I was before, but I’m still feeling incredibly tight in that upper calf post run.   We’ve tried 1 fix that had me leaning against a wall and doing calf stretches driving my hips forward and side to side.  Did that 6 to 10 times a day at about 30 a pop.  Didn’t help much.  We’re now on fix #2 and it seems to be moving things a little.  Fix #2 is also an attempt to remodel the muscles and tissues and that’s an active calf stretch with my foot locked against a wall.  Kinda like this.  Obviously, I’ve done hamstring stretches to try and stretch this in the past.  Difference here is rocking it instead of holding it and doing it 100’s of times per day trying to get the muscles remodeled.  It’s working a little bit, and I’m cautiously optimistic as we seem to be progressing some which hasn’t happened in a while.

I’m upping the mileage slowly and balancing pain & tightness while seeing if the stretches are aiding. I’m up to 3 miles now every other day.  I still get some tightness after the run, but the intensity seems to be diminishing some compared to history.  Also, the day after a run I’m close to 100%, so that’s been a nice change as I haven’t had that in a long, long time.

I go for massage this afternoon and hoping that clears some of the residual nodules and knots in the muscles.

so, cautiously optimistic for now, but I’ve been re-habbing this thing for years without any kind of results, and hence, skeptical too.

Dang, Nigel.  Sorry to hear.  Hang in there.  Fix the most important parts first.  Then check all the other things off the list.

Good news Brony. That calf had you thinking you were finished, didn't it?  Good to see you have some hope.

Ugh.  Sorry man.  Glad you've caught it, though.

Dang, Nigel, you just can't catch a break.  Really sorry to hear about the heart issue.  Take the long view ...take the long view.

Maybe after your Boston run, they shoulda just left you in that sauna to melt away.

#### it, I'm going to see about getting the heart done as soon after the knee as possible. Won't be able to do much anyway, they can heal together.

@pbm107 I'm cautiously optimistic that I'll be able to join you for the Shamrock marathon. Past 2 weeks my ankle has felt pretty decent. Worse comes to worse and I suffer a setback, I think I'm going target the Coastal Delaware Running Festival marathon at the end of April but I'd rather stay home and run with a fellow FBG. ;)
How is the ankle?  I noticed you have done more riding than running lately.

I hope @Hang 10 is doing better than I am.  My motivation has cratered.  My ankle is so-so, but I just don't have the drive to jump into another training cycle right now.  I don't know what it is, but its clear I'm on the same cycle over and over again where my running tapers off in that Dec-Feb time frame.  Actually being on the shelf has made it worse, I think.

You know you want it Ned, and sounds like you need it. So go ahead and get it...order the Peloton right ####### NOW!!!

That sucks and the weather has been really good around here recently so you are kind of missing out on a nice opportunity.  It is so difficult to get started back up after a break especially if you aren't 100%.  I do find getting out to run when the sun is out every once in a while helps with my motivation.

How have you been feeling?  Didn't take you long to get back to 60mpw.
I am over whatever issue I had over the summer, and seem to be responding well to the base building.  Since I don't have a chance of getting a PR in March I will likely stick with the easy running.  I may incorporate some hills and strides as I get closer to race day.

I've been in some good cross training routines (had a mile swim workout on Monday; 65 minutes on the stationary bike on Tuesday) before getting hit with a massive head cold ...slept 11 hours last night.

Since I'm not in a run training cycle, but want to compete, I've been eyeing one of two half IMs up in Grand Rapids, my home town and where we have a summer cottage.  Both races use roads that I've run on over the years, so it'd be familiar turf.  The swims would be in small lakes, which gives them a rather controlled environment.  June 11 for one; August 20 for the other.  Hmm.  I'll decide by the end of March when the discounted pricing expires for one of them (and when I'll have more confidence in my training).  Oddly, the endurance aspect of a half IM feels more enticing than the 'speed' aspect of an Olympic tri.

Sounds awesome.  I forgot you were another native Michigander. :hifive:  (Oakland County here, near Royal oak).

I've been enjoying this cycle of MAF.  just cranking out some decent mileage (109 for the year) and building the base.  Can't use the bike right now because I haven't ordered tubes, I will at some point but right now it's all about the (slowish) run.

Chances of PR aside, that seems smart.

I'm worried that if you wait too long you'll have to risk the possible warm weather of a late spring marathon.
