@AAABatteries, unfortunately this is not uncommon with nerve injuries.

Those people that were doom and gloom about Jaylon Smith ever playing again?  It's because the injury was nerve.  He could do all of the necessary things to get right and there was still a possibility of it not firing again.  Why did Marcus Mariota's season go south last year?  Nerve.  Sure, he played, but if you spent more than a few minutes watching that offense and didn't know about his injury you'd just repeatedly scream what the #### are they doing.  Welp, they were calling an offense that masked that nerve thing as much as possible because a limp armed Mariota was optimal to the alternative, Blaine Gabbert.  Because once that nerve injury lasted more than a few minutes it was going to last a long, long time.  How long?  No one knows.

So should you pay for the MRI?  No one here can answer that.  It could yield a tangible result and it could yield absolutely nothing.  Lots of injuries suck, but nerves are near the top of the list.  Because it's all variable and no one can assure you of anything no matter what you do.

Thanks - appreciate the thoughts and what you say is one of my concerns - maybe this is as good as it will get and I just live with it.  I don't want to do anything that will make it worse but I also am willing to deal with it if that's the "answer".  The one thing I feel confident in saying is that right now PT isn't working.  I almost want to just go run this afternoon and see how I feel tomorrow.  I think the "adult/parent" side of my is saying "that's dumb, you are going to hurt yourself worse" but nobody can answer that and now thinking/knowing it's a nerve injury just muddies the water for me.  :kicksrock:

Pretty much all this.

Nerve injuries just suck. Geez, even our own @Hang 10 hasn't been back because of it, even though he's killing it now on the bike. And obviously @JShare87

Just sucks for all you guys and just hope you can get to where you can do what you want at some point. Me, I'd probably get the MRI because I'd want to exhaust all avenues before throwing in the towel.

Best of luck, GB.

BOSTON update.

Weather looking wet with a headwind.  Doesn't look nearly as bad as last year, but who knows.  Still several days out.

Still figuring out my goal time for this race.  it will be weather dependent so I'll post on Sunday.

For those of those who want to track, you can download the BAA app.

Easier though is to text 'RUNNER' to 234567. You will then be cued for a bib # of who you want to follow.  My bib is 10304.  @gruecd is 5125.

So, I just had my followup with the ortho so I figured I'd give an update here.  Basically my leg/hamstring is not really any better or worse than when I first visited them and started doing PT.  It is better than when this first started back in October but I now haven't jogged/run or done any exercise activity where I'd need to use my legs for 6 months.  Unbelievably frustrating but the visit today may have helped shed some light on things.  During my PT sessions I would have some "pain" that was almost tingling.  Happened again today during the exam and based on that and his questioning he thinks I have some kind of nerve issue going on.  The current thought is that the original injury was a tear and that somehow is impacting my leg nerve.  He started mashing on the back of my leg in a somewhat new spot and when he did that I had a distinct tingling sensation and eventually some numbness in my foot.

I've had 3 somewhat severe injuries during my lifetime on my right leg.  Tore the ligaments in my right ankle, tore the hip muscle in my upper right leg and now tore my right hamstring.  I'm beginning to wonder if all these combined is causing some of this nerve "issue".  He wants to send me for an MRI to completely check everything out but when I asked if that doesn't show anything new and it's "just" the muscle/nerve then what the next step.  He didn't have a great answer for me - short of nerve surgery it seems like doing mostly what I've been doing for months - which hasn't seemed to help.

So, my frustration of the last few months is even greater now.  Sure, maybe I have a better understanding of what is going on but not really how to fix it.  I mainly wanted to type this out because of my frustration but also wanted your input.

  • should I do the MRI?  Is paying 1k going to really help anything if the remedy is going to be the same
  • I asked him if it is a nerve issue would I be able to just start activity again to see if it helps - he basically just said don't do anything that aggravates it.  But from what I can tell the only thing that doesn't aggravate it is lying in bed for days - I know that because I developed walking pneumonia weeks ago and spent almost a full work week in bed.  By the end of that illness my leg felt the best it had since October.  This tells me I should stay off it but without going on bed rest I don't see how I can do this
  • anybody have anything similar to this and any additional advice/suggestions?
You should get an MRI.... on your back. I’m pretty sure the 1st time you described this, I said it sounded like my injury. You could go back and check, but I discussed what I thought was a leg/hamstring issue for a while. Found out it was a herniated l4/l5 pressing on the nerve, causing the pain in my butt. As mentioned above, nerve injuries suck because there isn’t much you can do to heal it. Also, @gianmarco takes nerve injuries very serious, so don’t make jokes about it here. Best of luck with everything.

My first PT visit they asked me about my back and mentioned, like you, that it could be my back or sciatic.  Here's the thing - I have ZERO back pain.  It starts at my mid/lower hamstring area and goes lower (mostly around my lower leg and back of knee).  I'd be shocked at this point if it has anything to do with my back.  Also, today when he was doing the exam he started pushing on the leg and kind of caused some pain/tingling which has continued for a few hours.  I was at at least happy with this new disagnosis because it 1. means I'm not crazy or being a wuss.  2. It kind of makes sense based on PT - it wasn't getting better and honestly the therapist seemed almost perplexed or frustrated.  My last visit they put me in the pool to see if that help/made a difference.  After that session he even said that maybe a MRI would be needed but to talk to the ortho.  I already had the appointment so I just skipped PT after that and the ortho today said not to do any more PT for now.

To your point about not being able to heal it - that's where I'm wondering if I just resume activity and see where it goes if that is a bad idea and I could make it worse.

This was a pleasant reminder that whatever work I get done Friday should not be submitted then.  Write up drafts, sure, but don't starting hitting send until sometime Monday afternoon.

Sorry to hear that it's still an issue.  I'm not surprised that PT isn't helping much.  I'm quite convinced I pinched a nerve a few months ago, creating some tingling and much discomfort in my shoulder and down my right arm.  (The weird thing was how it moved from spot to spot.)  I tried a chiropractor friend, which included some specific massage therapy.  Ultimately, though, I think it was just a matter of time before it cleared up (although that was about a month or more).  The therapy didn't seem to have any true effect.

Resuming activity doesn't sound like a smart move.  I'd guess that stretching (yoga?) might be the best bet for now.  Swimming and maybe biking sounds better than the pounding of running.

I also have ZERO back pain. Like none at all.

Just signed up for a 50K on Saturday with 8K' of elevation gain.  Gotta get in another big training effort before my 100K in three weeks.
Good luck Duck.

Have you ever had any successful long races without doing events along the way?  Personally I can't get motivated to prepare for or do a 50k training run.  I'm going to need to get over this hurdle if I do any late summer or fall events as racing in the Southeast shuts down over the summer.

Good luck to @Steel Curtain, @gruecd, @ChiefD, and @Osaurus on your races this extended weekend!

Would the Boston Runners remind me of their race goals?
Margin for error is tiny, but if the current wunderground forecast holds Boston has some decent weather.  Tail wind, scattered rain, and a suck below 120.  But steady rain is forecasted earlier, thunderstorms later, and wind patterns could switch to a cross wind.  Probably need to wait for this system to make landfall tomorrow before the models stabilize.

Well la di da I have a 100k in three weeks so just for fun I decided at the last minute to run a 50k training race....
Ha!  I've had the plan to run a 50K in this three week window (last weekend through next weekend), I just hadn't pulled the trigger yet.  I'm spoiled in that there are so many within driving distance that I didn't have to sign up early (I think there are five ultras within 3 hours drive here this weekend ).  So I finally decided last night which one was the best fit for what I wanted to accomplish.

Good luck Duck.

I don't think it's absolutely necessary, but I like the idea.  Every year I've run a 100M I've progressed through a 50K (or three) and a 50M/100K prior to the big one.  I just think the extended time on feet and the experience with your gear as well as pushing nutrition and hydration are different than just going out on a four hour run on your own.  And I can get myself to go out for 4-4:30, but if I want to do a longer effort I'd rather just sign up for a trail marathon or 50K and use that as my training run.  And as I said above, I'm lucky in that I have multiple events to choose from almost every weekend here in Northern California.

I picked this particular race because it's the most vertical of anything around here, with Mt. Diablo about 1000' higher than Mt. Tam, and that much vert will have me power hiking a lot.  So while the downhills will work over my quads I'm sure, I think I'll recover quicker than if I did a more moderate 50K and ran a higher percentage of it.  Oh and my mother in law has been here since Tuesday, and this gets me out of the house for about 10 hours on Saturday ;)

Well la di da I get to prove once and again how much of a bad-### I am by signing up for a 50k training race and I'm gonna work on my nutrition by eating BLT's and tater tots and maybe some Doritos, all the while bailing out on my mother-in-law, which is one hell of a shark move that the rest of us will bow down in your #BMF glory for not thinking of that angle first...

Much, much better.

Do you think Klimat gives you a reasonable wind speed?  I think it's generally windier that it says for me.
Since he switched me from dark sky to accuweather I think it's been accurate, but he mentioned deflated wind speed as an issue with others.

Did you see his profile and his 300 mile per week goal?  That dude deserves that premium subscription for sure.
#TeamNeverQuit Currently Trying To Inspire 😬#ProjectMarathon #Project2020 Project Marathon = Running at least 26.2 every day for the rest of my life (started on December 26, 2018 which was the day after "26 Days of Christmas" ended which started on November 30, 2018, which was completed). I'm planning on upping my mileage gradually throughout 2019 and am going to ramp-up into 2020 (during which I plan execute "Project 2020" which is a #HumanPotential Project (more details of which can be shared in-person) I I can't thank the following people enough for their video content and love of running. The #GingerRunner ( #grl), #iRunFar, #BillyYang, #RunSteepGetHigh and #JamilCoury 👊 "Correr es vivir" ~ El Caballo Blanco (translated = To Run Is To Live)

But how does this dude have the time for this?  And I love the "upping my mileage gradually throughout 2019".  He went from 35 mpw in November to almost 200 mpw in December.

I guess he's doing it just to do it?  It doesn't make much sense to me.

Some people be crazy.

There’s a woman I follow on Strava in San Francisco who runs around 20 miles almost every single morning. Just running around The City. I’ve been in races with her, and she’s usually somewhere around me in the pack (17 spots ahead of me at Canyons 100K last year). That’s a whole lot of mileage to be a mid-packer.

Two good dumps in the books.

Weather is perrrrrfect. Gonna be 39 at the gun with a slight 4mph breeze from the north. If I hadn't just run Carmel, I would try and PR this race (1:46:55 is my current best.) As it stands, just going to see what happens. No real plan yet.

I dumped, but now I gotta take a leak and not a fan of portolets at the start area.  I think I’m gonna wait and run it off.   :toilet:

ETA: low 70s and a nice breeze for a change. Lol.  Forgot to leave my wallet in the car.  Here’s the start herd

Get you some. :headbang:

And you gotta get over the port-a-potty.  They are your friend (especially in emergency dump situations)
