Ran a 10k - Official Thread (7 Viewers)

Never thought to click the "flyby" button for Carmel or other races until @AAABatteries asked about capturing a time for non-split location on a run but I just did that and it's awesome! You can pick and choose who all to add it and watch them zip around the course - picked a bunch of people that ran the 1/2 and watched us all race. Also picked @gruecd, @Juxtatarot, @ChiefD and me watched us run the "half" together and the rest of them finish the full.

I've used the flyby before, just didn't think to do it on a race... the one for the indy mini is crazy because of the number of people that ran it. I there's a ludicrous number of people I can add onto my race.

I need a photo of a middle finger as my profile pic for stuff like that.

"I'm pink, slow, and proud of it."

I can't reconcile what you do and how it works. You've proven you'll over come whatever obstacles present themselves over. and over. and over again though. I agree with the feedback from others, but at the same time question whether it's even applicable to you.
There is the mold, there is the exception and then there is @BassNBrew. I just assume that at any moment, if necessary, he could knock out 100 miles on land, sea or air.

glad to hear it's not arthritis. I'm gonna predict your PT:

Fire hydrants,  Donkey Kicks, Clamshells, planks, side leg raises
Close.

Hamstring stretches, piriformis stretches, bridges, clamshells, and side-lying bent knee lifts.

I remember fire hydrants from yoga.  That probably would have been a good addition.

Did my VO2Max test this morning.  51 mL/kg/min.  My watch had been reporting 53 and I figured that was crazy-high.  Apparently it's only a little high.

Not sure what to make of this.  The tester/trainer told me that's a good number.  So it feels like I'm an underachiever.  Decent VO2Max, not-so-decent race results.

Oh and the test concluded with me trying to hang on to a 3:40/km (5:53/mi) pace at a 4% incline.  Yeah, that didn't last long.

My watch currently estimates my VO2 Max at 46 currently. It had been up to about 48 before taking a couple weeks off and then dropped down to 45. It just recently went back up to 46 this week. I have read about it some but no idea what it really means but I am a little sad to be at the top end of "good" instead of the bottom end of "great".

I've never even looked at this stuff on my watch.  It even has race predictors.

My VO2 Max is 47.

My predicted races:

5K -- 22:17
10K -- 47:26
HM -- 1:52:17
Marathon -- 4:26:19

Yeah the reason I thought the Garmin was way over-estimating my VO2Max was because of its crazy race predictions for me (which are 100% based on VO2Max):

  • 5K 19:35
  • 10K 40:37
  • HM 1:29:54
  • Marathon 3:07:24
Those aren't even aspirational, they're ridiculous (for me, not the rest of you BMFs in here).

This is why I made a point of getting the proper VO2Max test done (with the mask/etc) to prove my watch (which just uses HR at a given pace) was crazy.  But apparently its VO2Max estimate is better than its race predictions.

Feeling like I'm in a good place right now, early in marathon training.  Last week's 54 run miles was the most in at least two, maybe three, years (although that's the normal workload for a few of you).  The week included a solid 15 miler plus some quick intervals and a bit of tempo.

This morning I ran 17 1/2 miles using a bunch of neighborhood loops.  It was actually quite effortless, aided by being an overcast morning.  Pace was a bit slower than recents and HR a bit higher, but that might have been the lack of nutrition before the run and none during (only about 35 oz of fluids).  Interestingly, the HR stayed below 140 for the first 8 miles, but then hung at or above 160 for the last 6 miles.  I'll see if better nutrition addresses that.  This run was also in brand new Saucony Freedoms ...so much for needing to break in new shoes!  The Freedoms have a 4 mm drop vs. the now-retired Triumphs and an 8 mm drop, though I expect to order more Triumphs on-line (current pair ended up with 550 miles - eek).

That said, I do need to find out from my doc what I need to do about lingering, high blood pressure readings.

Do you run those Des Plaines River trails often?  I don't remember you mentioning them but from the Strava map there looks like a number of interesting loops.

Edit: What about the cemetery paths?

Good reminder about the River paths.  They're not great near me, especially if we've had any rain.  Some of the underpasses are kind of funky.  But if I drive 15 minutes to the NW (SW of Ohare), I can catch a really nice long stretch of gravel/dirt that gets up into Des Plaines and beyond.  This morning, I was going to head to the paved trail starting by the Brookfield Zoo (7 miles out to Hinsdale; I've run it with @gruecd), but decided to stay close to home since I was running on new shoes.

I haven't used the cemetary paths ...they're not quite long enough to make it worthwhile.  I might drive out to Waterfall Glen on the 27th for a two-loop, 20 miler.

I've been dying to try those out myself.

I can’t find my race predictions now but when i saw them, they were absurdly optimistic.

I forget what race are you training for and what’s your goal? I didn’t see one in the race calendar. It’s a great sign that you’re able to put in that type of volume in the summer.

My VO2 Max is showing 59 inside my Garmin app. It says, “Your fitness is that of an excellent 20 year old. That’s the top 1% of your age/gender.”

That makes me sound like I’m a BMF.

If you could just stay healthy for any length of time you'll do some head turning stuff.

Totally forgot about the race calendar :bag:

On a total Lark I signed up for a local sprint tri this Saturday. It's funny but I'm less ready for the sprint than I would be for a HIM.  Still, should be good practice for the Oly in August.

Honestly, a 5k kinda scares me right now. :Nospeed;

I tested at 68 years ago on the bike. Race prediction had me challenging for the yellow jersey. IMO it doesn’t mean squat

Another day, another huge fail. I’ll blame the 95 / 66 for it because I’m tried of blaming myself. Pace eroded quickly until I was at a run / walk after mile 5. Awaiting the heat adaptation to kick in

I've kind of started a recent workout routine that is somewhat unorthodox... about once a week I eat something for dinner that really is a crappy prerace meal and therm go for a run. Part way through I end up with semi puke burps and then persevere on... It simulates that late race feel when out for a 5 mile run or so.

Last week it was burgers with fresh jalapenos from the garden. Tonight it was quesadillas with chips and a homemade spicy salsa. And tonight I felt like I crushed the run with a last mile kick. Fun times!

Also, I'm on pace to crush my monthly high for miles and in the most miserable of conditions even. Have I told you lately how giddy I am again. Other than at the end of Saturday's run - but even that pain has faded to a dull ache that wasn't "that bad" unless I think about it too hard.

Sorry, I’ll get it on the calendar.  The big goal is the Marine Corp Marathon on 10/27 ...my BQ for 2021.  So I’m in just week 4 of an 18 week cycle!  The 30+ miles/wk since early January and some solid cross training has positioned me well.

I’m actually running a local 8K this Saturday (another reason I did my long run today).  The 10 year old across the street and I both won our AGs last year, so we gotta defend.  Mile 2 takes us right down our block, and it sounds like they’re going to make a race party out of it.

Just a block full of medal mongers.

Hey @gianmarco have you noticed a change in your gait when trying to do the MAF?   looks like I'm more of a heal striker when I'm running slow.

or anyone else...

Burgers and quesadillas?  Finally one of you #######s with a training plan that suits my fitness level! 🍔🍟🍕🌮

I don't dare talk about it because of past...umm, instances.  But my dietary decisions before running have a tendency to not be good ones, especially if plan A running time falls through.  I've definitely ran post burger before though.  Not sure about quesadilla.  After 3 hours of wine tasting was probably the most risky venture I've done.

So Badwater 135 is wrapping up and a new course record was set by Japan's Yoshihiko Ishikawa of 21 hours 33 minutes. That doesn't even register on my badass meter because it is so far above any bar I could use to judge. The local I know had a strong showing for his first time placing 5th with a very respectable 28 hour 13 minute finish. 7 hours behind the winner :oldunsure:

Lee's wife just posted some pics. Super cool that every race he runs he finishes with a Fort Mill Cross Country singlet https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10217313530844156&set=pcb.10217313544804505&type=3&theater
