Ran a 10k - Official Thread (6 Viewers)

@tri-man 47 - so much good to like in that post. Just a couple of highlights to me:

1. The reverence you showed for the entire event. You had a purpose for this race, and you executed that purpose from the day your signed up to the day you ran the race. From raising the money to always sharing items on your Facebook page leading up to the race to noticing the things during the race that made it special. Love that part about this entire race for you.

2. Running in sopping wet conditions and STILL getting that result: to me, this is otherworldly. Lots of people - LOTS - would have folded under those conditions. Yet, you persevered. You stared straight into it's eyes and fought through it. If anyone ever ran a race in the spirit of the men and women the race was about - that was YOU. Truly inspiring.

So impressed. Congrats.

Well la de da...I'll just write a heart felt and emotional post about what a great person Tri-man is and just maybe people will stop making fun of me for hoarding shovels.

All-in-all, I’m very happy.  PRs are always great, and this one was very satisfying under the conditions.  I will wonder, though, how different it might have been if I wasn’t lugging all that water around in my shoes and socks.  I’m also not very pleased that my mind kind of drifted over the last handful of miles.  But then again, I was very happy with holding 16 miles in the middle at a 7:38/mi pace.  And really, the extra mileage (.2?) added a couple of minutes to my overall time.  And of course, I’m a successful medal monger in one of the country’s largest marathons.  So now I join @xulf in a stretch of post-race nothingness.  Boston training won’t get serious until a year from now.  Apparently, my family has already discussed a family trip to Boston for 2021!

My finishing comment is to again thank you guys for the incredible support during my training and more importantly, for The Elk Institute.  We all bailed out the fundraising effort, and the strong showing meant a great deal to Dr. Elk and to the veterans.
Congrats (again) on a fast, gutsy race and an awesome fundraising effort.  You say that you weren't happy with your mental effort towards the end, but conditions like that are going to #### with the very best of us (i.e., you).

@gruecd, @SteelCurtain - still a ways off so could change, but current forecast says 44/31 with about a 30% chance of rain or SNOW! Grue would probably be happy with that but i could do with it not snowing.

I think I like the fact that the time change is this coming weekend. Last year it changed the night after the race, IIRC. Means it will actually be after sunrise when the race starts this time instead of just before.

@tri-man 47 amazing race, amazing RR

I can't find the historical data right now, but would be very interested to see how your age group's results this year compare to past years. I'm thinking the time you put up in those horrible conditions would have been at least a couple of minutes faster on a normal day. I think you were very mentally tough at the finish to continue grinding, instead of playing the "poor me" card after all you'd been through that morning.

Accuweather isn't showing this for me.  Seemingly almost perfect weather except for the wind (9 mph gusting to 13)

A few follow-ups:

- BnB, the fundraising site is closed, unfortunately.  But again, Team Tri-Man came through!

- Awards go five-deep in the brackets.  They'll send out a notification when results are official, and awardees are invited to a ceremony at Quantico in December.  I expect the notification will tell us what happens if we can't attend ...I expect they'll get the awards to us in some manner.

- I'm curious, too, about overall times compared to recent years.  I'll gather some data (ignoring 2017, which was a heat-fest).  Top of the bracket(s) can be hit or miss, so beyond the AG leaders, I'll see how the times are a little further down.

- On a different day (like pleasant Saturday or Monday, LOL), I'm sure my time would have been faster.  Not so much early on, but I figure the final 5 miles or so would have been stronger as the light, bouncy shoes would have been helping and my legs wouldn't have been turning to mush from lifting the extra weight on every step for the previous few hours!

- and sorry about the sporadic race tracking.  Weird that they tracked 5K, 10K, HM, and 40K only  Why not every 5K?

That's bizarre. If you're going to stack tracking timers you do it at the end of the race, not beginning. Not much info to glean 5K vs. 10K.

I think 10K-Half-30K-35K-40K is about right.

The map provided mile by mile updates, which was nice and better than the text tracking

How do we feel about strength/core work during the taper?  My current plan is to do my normal 3x/week routine this week, and then stop until after the race, since I don't wanna risk pulling a muscle or something so close to the main event.  On the other hand,  it's part of my normal routine, and the last thing I wanna do is throw my body off-kilter.  Thoughts?

I think i read its best to stop 3-4 days before the race.  But I can’t remember where.

Risk/reward. No harm in it up until a few days before, but what if. I plan to do my last real lift 9 days prior. I will do one light one 5-6 days prior then tap out. 70-80% of the normal weight and probably only 2 sets of whatever exercises I choose to do that day.

Man, I'd love to see their mile splits and total distance to see how it compares!  The data doesn't look like it's available any more, though.
Not sure if it would help but If you look at your race on strava, you should see something showing others who ran it. You can click on them to stalk paces and distance ran.

I read something similar to this a few months ago. Something like there are no benefits to be had a week or so before the race. I understand where @gruecd is coming from though. I try and keep my same routine the entire week. I don’t think you will gain any benefits from it. I also don’t think you’ll see any negative impacts from it. Just realized this doesn’t help at all.

Thanks??

Dang dude.  My apologies.  One of those things I was meaning to get to and thought i had more time (can I blame Iguana for claiming all my brain space regarding race dates?).  Hit me up next time you do something like this and remind me I'm in for double.

Yup, I did find all the results that are in Strava.  The #2 male shows 26.41 miles; the #3 male shows 26.44 miles.  The winning female shows 26.81 miles!  WTH??  Looking at a dozen other runners, they all ranged from 26.4x to 26.8x (with at least one at 27.xx).  Very strange!

You should have worn 3 watches.

Extremely bummed out this morning. I took my son to play basketball last night and then we went to the gym for a few minutes. I was showing him how to use the machines and decided to show him the leg press. Light weight but still a mistake. Aggravated my damn knee and now it doesn't feel great this morning.  I don’t think it will cause any issues running this weekend but I’m just frustrated with myself and my knee - especially after talking about how good it was feeling.

3 x 2 miles this morning at 6:40 GMP(ish), so other than some "pickups" during this coming Saturday's 10-miler and a mini interval workout next Tuesday, it's all downhill from here...

That's nice and all but what's with all the new green stuff on the Strava maps?

Working on your mental planning?  What are you going to think about in those final several miles?  What will carry you through that last stretch on Meridian that will go on seemingly forever?  Get all that in your mind before you start!
I can only imagine what that stretch down Meridian will be like. I know what it was like last year and I was only doing the half. From 25th Street to the Circle will look like a lifetime away, I am certain! There are a few things I'll use to muscle through that section - one will of course be thoughts of here. One will be a little trick I always use when running - particularly when running new/unfamiliar routes - I take myself from where I am to a place I know - i.e. routes I run often. For example, if I am 3 miles from the finish, I'll make myself picture one of my favorite routes and will mentally mark off certain landmarks of that route. For something like the last 10k, I have several spot I can "go to". Kind of helps me focus on keeping my feet moving and hopefully will distract me from looking at Monument Circle and thinking about how far away it is.

As for mental planning, I've stared at the route map more times than you could possibly imagine, and I've run the race in my head about 4.3 billion times. Trying to picture what I want it to be like and what I know it can feel like based on my long training runs. I don't know if I can ever really be ready, but I feel like I'm as ready as I am ever going to be.

There's certain things we don't joke about......
In all seriousness, the memory of your tree will go with me around the northside of Indy. I guarantee it will pass through my mind at some point - along with @Juxtatarot's ridiculous HR, @ChiefD's shovels, @BassNBrew and @SFBayDuck and others crazy long ultra runs, @tri-man 47's killer MCM run he just finished and dozens of other things both silly and serious that goes on around here. My ultimate dream is having some kind of la-di-da, #BMF, #beatgrue story to tell when it is all over... but there's a ridiculous amount of waiting to do first... and plenty of work to do after that is over.

Welp, that was a successful way to cap off 25 days of running in a row. Hour 20 HM pace is 6:05. I got down to a net 6:11 pace 12 days ago after being in the high 6:teens in September, so let's bring it down to goal then see if I can sustain - 6:05/6:11/6:02/6:03/5:56/6:04/5:59 (net-6:03). I screwed up the beginning of mile 2 as I looked down 0.3 mi into it, saw 6:32, and had to haul ### to (try to) catch-up. But other than that I'm not sure it could have gone much better. A couple of short 5+% grade inclines late got my attention, but I didn't feel like I was laboring at all until the final half mile.

Finished October with 206 miles, most in a month since March 2018. I've nailed all 10 workouts beginning with the Oct 6 race, only three recovery runs north of 8 minute pace during that stretch, and as I sit here writing less than an hour after that workout...I feel fine. The only reason I'm not running tomorrow is a 36 hour wall of rain just arrived. Seems like an appropriate time for an off day. I'm going to be antsy though.

In a good place right now...

@MAC_32 you’re killing these workouts running them much faster than I have been able to run them.  My last workout is tomorrow, 5 at HMP with a target of sub 6:20 pace, unfortunately it will be raining. Looking forward to taking it easy next week, this plan has been tough.

Can't be emphasized enough - everyone else, if you really want to challenge yourself for half training then it's Hanson's. Now to see if all the work pays off for us.
