Ran a 10k - Official Thread (3 Viewers)

Doesn't bother me at all. I've been chomping on an apple a few times already without a problem. Usually takes me a mile to finish it. Of course, I'm not running as fast as you do so that may be part of it.

Yes, the freeze pops looked awesome. I thought that was brilliant.
Liquid calories get absorbed into your system quicker and are generally a lot easier on your GI tract.

I remember one time I tried to eat a granola bar on a long run and I felt like I was doing 69 on a squirrel. Pretty rough and not at all pleasant.

You're doing it wrong

It's the acorns.

Oh, and you guys are all scaring the #### out of me. Thanks.....
They all mean well, but also why I mentioned, and will probably repeat 800'times... Make it a healthy fear - sometimes the driving home of the fear in here can be overwhelming! Heed the warnings but don't let it freak you out - fine line and easier said than done. But some of the best intentions here can lead to undo/too much anxiety for you, IMO.

I think I'm going to start driving to various places to run. I really enjoy going on new routes. And I think I run better when I do as well. Unfortunately, I'm just so limited on where I can go around me.

I ran a new route starting and finishing at my office on Monday, and this morning I drove 15 mins to another new route. When you're running damn near every day, that's the type of #### that's necessary to avoid falling into a rut and losing your mojo.

NYC half is a month and a half away. I've been shut down for the last almost 2 weeks with illness, work and Achilles issues.

I'm resigned to just guttng this out and PR*ing.

I should absolutely crush my PR for slowest 1/2.

When it’s not dark and icy, there are so many different routes that I can take that I only get bored of the first few miles.

During winter, the limited routes aren’t fun but I don’t think driving somewhere would help.

I remember you saying you never run the same route twice.

I have essentially 2 ways I can run from where I am. Or a neighborhood loop.

Today I ran somewhere completely new while my daughter was at gymnastics. It was awesome. Plus that area is loaded with sidewalks so there's so many different ways I could go.

The only time I get new routes are when I run during a kid's event or run far enough to find something I hadn't seen in a while. Wedging in the time to run is battle enough, let alone adding in the logistics and added time driving. Whenever I can get some place new it's usually because I used a half day to facilitate.

Just don’t get lost. I’ve accidentally ran a few plus 20-milers when exploring and losing my sense of direction.

I have always mapped my route before going so I know where and what I'm running. If you notice in my run today, I had to stop a couple times to make sure I was going the right way that I planned because I couldn't remember if I needed to turn left or right.

The problem here is there's streets that just don't have sidewalks, or will have them and then they just end. I don't chance running in the streets here which is why I always double-check on Google Maps that I can go the route I plan.

I've yet to just go out and run somewhere new without a plan. It does sound fun, though.

I had a surprisingly good heart rate on my run today. 7:17 pace at 136. I rarely get that low at that pace. I’m not sure I 100% trust it but I didn’t notice signs that it was wrong.

It’s been weird recently. When I run faster than normal, I’ve done fairly well and have been surprised at the lowish heart rate. However, when I’m running slower, my heart rate has been higher than where I’d like it to be. I can’t make sense out of this.

My runs this week sucked balls. It’s weird - heart rate seems to be ok but I have no energy and am having a hard time catching my breath. Weather has been good. Sleeping has been good.

I think it’s diet related.

On the bright side I have a hot neighbor run tomorrow to look forward to.

5th week of quality after months without any, increased mileage last 3 weeks. Body may just be asking for a deload.

Can we get a description of said neighbor?

Rough day today.  Ran 12 Easy at 9:00 min mile to be ready for Miami.

then a few hours later did 6 more.  My god.  It was brutal.  It felt like i had bonked.  Did 10 min miles!

after the run, i weighed myself and i was 4-5 lbs lower than normal.

It’s the weed.

This is why I'm the opposite of you guys.  I much prefer to run a known route over and over again.  I can't stand having to stop to navigate.

In the rare case that I'm on a new route with no navigation required, I love it.  But as soon as I have to navigate, especially having to stop to navigate, I'm pissed.

I guess that's why I've run the same 10K route over 100 times in the last two years...

Seems like I'm the only one that does this.

My wife hates it too which is why we always run the same routes together.

I generally run the same routes or variations, but I can also run a new route pretty easily. I just have this innate ability to look at a map once and instantly remember where stuff is.

That and shovels are my areas of expertise. Ask me anything about those.

OK, on the whole navigation topic, for those of you who run with a smart watch (Apple Watch or the Android equivalent), get the RunGo app. I've been using it for probably a year or so, and it's super cool. Map out a route, and it gives you turn-by-turn instructions through your headphones over your music. Super awesome when you wanna run a new route with a lot of turns.

I like running the same routes over AND new routes/ locations!

I like "same routes" for the same reason I love running routes that include strava segments - it lets me compare me to me from multiple runs.

New routes and totally new locations just gives different scenery and a sense of exploring or something like that.

I also don't mind driving a little to go run if I have the time. I often drive 20 minutes or so to a few different running spots.

Drove about that far yesterday to run trails and hills to prep for my trail race... it's 6 weeks from yesterday. Having gone and done that a couple times now, and having done a few multiday hikes in the past, I can kind of see the appeal of doing an ultra. But, man, that would be so much freaking work!

I always try to do new routes 😉

With my mileage, I'm more than content doing the same loops. Running is a mental escape and I got enough crap in my head where I don't notice my surroundings. For hiking,, I do like to mix it up.

Have any of the run the same route guys noticed on Strava that the matched run feature caps out on the last 200 matched runs?

I run the same routes out of necessity, most of my running is done in the dark, and a lot of the roads around me aren’t well lit.

Variety, imo is the best way.

I definitely have a few preferred routes. If I run on the arsenal there's one basic route, no thinking involved, although you can vary it up if there's not a lot of traffic.

Around the house there's basically just variations of a few main routes, but I know where every road leads (although I did turn early today into a dead end, had to go a few houses further).

I generally have a good sense of direction, last time I got in any sort of trouble was almost a decade ago (had to stop at a church and call the wife). There have been times when getting to know an area where I'm not sure if this road connects to the next, but I'll generally explore on the bike which is just fun.  But as most of us carry phones, there's not much risk of getting into trouble - just maybe running longer than expected or into a road we don't want to run on.

I'm getting ready for church now. But can you actually do this in a run you've already done?
Yes, but it's a process and you lose a lot of the data you record (like HR, cadence, etc.).  Cropping 0.01 takes a moment and keeps everything else intact.
