Ran a 10k - Official Thread (22 Viewers)

Watch these 2 videos and see if it gives you an understanding of what they are talking about and maybe you can take something away that helps.

Running technique

Running form
BTW I ran for the first time today since my failed 10 mile attempt (about a week and.a half).  I really tried to follow the form/technique in these videos that you shared.  I was only able to get in 2 miles today but I felt really good.  I'm going to gradually ramp up the distance (feel like I'm starting from ground zero again) using these techniques.  Thanks again for sharing.

Awfully quiet heading into 10K weekend.  Fell off the first page?

At this point, planning on early Sunday morning.  Little tune up this morning.  Not holding my breath on predicted time but we shall see what race day has in store.....

Yeah I need you guys to start smack-talking.  Hopefully a few early times come in tomorrow.  I'm mentally falling back into my "I suck, I can't run fast, I'm sore, my shoes are old, how am I ever going to run sub-45 this weekend with it so hot, etc, etc" rut.

Sub 45 is all you got!?!? I’m going to smoke that time, and I’m a gimp! How’s that for your smack talk, #####?

Today would have been a lovely day for a race  :kicksrock:

Thinking about tomorrow evening.  Friday morning works best from a wind and schedule standpoint, but suck index would probably be over 130.  Normally, I feel I'm pretty heat tolerant, but we've had such a cool spring that there's no way I am acclimated to the weather that's approaching this weekend.

Are you racing your wife or is she running separately?

Hammy wasn't happy from the giddyup today, no matter the slow pace.

I'm looking at giving it a go on Saturday morning, but at this point it's not looking good.

I was hoping to be ready to go tomorrow and take advantage of low 50's/mostly cloudy w scattered showers/and the brisk SSE wind I hoped for, but I'm gonna heed the advice of my HR and pass. I've noticed I'm fresh when I can

*run in the low 8's while keeping my HR 130 or so on a 45 minute recovery

*long run something around 7:30 pace while keeping my HR around 140 until sometime north of 80 minutes

Monday's easy 45 minutes was 30-40 seconds/mile slower than usual and I was struggling keeping my HR below the mid-high 130's. Yesterday just said 'crisp' on the schedule. And I couldn't help but laugh when I looked down as I approached mile 1 and saw a pace in the 8's and a HR of 148. I knew at that moment that racing Thursday was dead. I spose it's a good thing I was able to keep my HR there through the rest of the run at a mid-low 7's clip, but that's nearer to my HR zone for double digit goal MP runs.

So I'm taking it easy the next couple days. Not going to make a preliminary 'when' decision until sometime Friday.

Who's team am I on?  Who should I be talking smack to?

Oh yeah, that's right, nobody.  I'd need to be faster than somebody here to talk smack to them.

I've been debating going with the wind or switching to a loop.  Part of me wants to run it like a real course instead of "cheating" by going with the wind the whole way.  I haven't decided.  I know that would cost my team some seconds but whatever.

My fitness has improved recently and I'm very pleased.  I've been registering 63 VO2 maxes in runs which is in my upper range in recent years.  I'm very excited for this race.

I have been gifted ideal conditions for tomorrow, it should be 39 degrees between 4-6 AM with very little wind so I should have my run up on Strava by 7 AM.   I am running the same course that I did for the 5k but with 3 additional loops around Temple Ambler.

I am not sure what to expect in regards to my time, I think I might of overdid it with my training cramming for the 5K and I wasn't able to get many of the workouts in ahead of this one.  I have been taking it easy the past 1.5 weeks and hoping that my freshness will be able to carry me.  The 5 mile to 10K is where I am at my best so I think I have a good feel for the suffering level to race the distance.

I have never raced a 10K before, so it's a guarantee it's going to be a PR.

I can also guarantee there is no way I'm gonna hit my estimated time of 49:00.

My plan is just to go out and run my ### off and see what happens.

Weather here in the race window is thunderstorms every day...highs are 75-80 and lows are basically 60.

I had to completely alter my route versus what I did for the 5K since the wind is now coming from the S instead of the N.  I am going to have to traverse some busy roads (and of course round-abouts), so I am hoping to get my run in right at sunrise one of these days (if the rain isn't too bad).  The sucky thing about sunrise is that humidity is pretty much at the peak.

I think I'm going to run this thing shirtless  :pickle:

Relative humidity is at its peak, but its impact isn't any different as the dew point is what really matters.

If the dew point is 65 degrees and the outside temperature is 65 degrees, that's 100% relative humidity.  If the temperature rises to 85 during the day, and the humidity remains unchanged, the dew point is still 65 degrees but the relative humidity may now only be 50% (just a guess, it's a complicated formula to figure it out).

In other words, relative humidity doesn't really mean much because those will feel equally bad.  The dew point is what you want to look at.

Btw, here's a neat chart with suck index and how to adjust your pace

I don't know how much flexibility your schedule is, but you're going to have windows. There are no hours after 8 am tomorrow > 50% and the suck doesn't go over 120 til noon. Friday's warmer, but the %'s don't top 50 til mid afternoon. Saturday is sub 40% all day and you're sub 120 on the suck up til 10. If it makes a difference you've got a non-south wind too.

In all seriousness, I have no idea what I'm talking about here. Good luck.

Yeah, I am familiar with the suck index.  I only used humidity because the weather channel app doesn't give dew point when looking at the hourly.

I really was just wanting to share the shirtless thing, then you went and made it all academic and unfun  :kicksrock:

Wife works tomorrow and Friday...so I have the kids and cant get out during the day (unless super early).  The Saturday east wind is terrible for assiting on any decent route.  I'm targeting Friday at 6:00 AM if the rain holds off.

My original was 49. Not gonna happen. Put me down for 51:00.

I was 29:30 or something in round one.

You can't officially submit a time and then later take it back and submit a better run.  However, if you run tomorrow and decide to bail or just not count it, you can attempt again.
At the risk of contradicting the captain, I thought trying to improve one's time was permitted under the rules.  So that if the teams are close on Sunday, someone can go out and run again and try to improve their time (many discussed this possibility for the 5K).  Not that (m)any are going to take this option, but it was fun to have it on the menu.

Sorry Team Grue, I went for it this morning but didn’t have it.
You ran a 38:39.  #BMF

Looking at your cadence, it appears you had to break stride about 3/4 of the way through your run.  Did you have to stop for a car?

I think that was ruled out when it was decided that Mrs. Gianmarco would be the deciding runner during the 5K.

I would love to see the day where running a 38:39 = “not having it.”  Man.  Y’all are just impressive pbm.

Mint condition morning here today on a planned rest day.  Warmer morns but appearing to be dry coming this weekend. Saturday will be the warmest after it hits mid 80s tomorrow (?!) but I still think that’s my go target around sun rise.

Sitting by the river and a flock of @JAA’s swam by. Nature is healing.
