I’m not crying, you’re crying.

That lady had basically the same splits I had, behind 30 hour pace the whole damned time, and our finishing times were about  a minute apart (she got me!).

Just watched the video my buddy Jim made of 2017 for the umpteenth time. I was trying so hard to stay calm and relaxed through those first 40 miles or so, despite being behind schedule from the start. Then it’s just so damned disheartening getting into Michigan Bluff (mile 56) after dark, because you know you’re in trouble against the cutoffs the rest of the way. I’ll always be thankful to Jim, @tri-man 47, and the rest of the crew for keeping me moving.  Without their help I never would have gotten to hear that “Yeah Dad!” from my daughter as I hit the track, a moment that will forever be one of the highlights of my life.
I watched Golden Hour this morning.  So awesome.

I distinctly remembering @SFBayDuck's day (and night and next day) at Western States.  He had posted his goals and the cut offs for the 30 hour pace and he was behind in a bunch of them early on as we were tracking here in this thread.  I was getting worried but didn't want to say anything but then @SFBayDuck got all BMF on us in the second half and crushed his goal.  Inspiring.

Yeah, that weekend was a blast to follow along. Will never forget that.

I was literally running around one of our local single tracks listening to No Sleep Til Brooklyn. But every time they said No Sleep Til. I'd hoist my first in the air and yell:

AUBUUUUUUUUUURN!!!

Yesterday during my long run, I got a text from an old acquaintance who I’m not really fond of.  Figured it was just a random thing.  Kept buzzing me through the day, and then again this morning when I was getting out of bed.  Shrugged it off, as it wasn’t a big deal, and decided to go out for a run this morning anyway.

After my run, I found that the “old friend” had moved into my house, was sitting on the couch in his underwear, eating my Doritos and drinking my beer.  TV was cranked-up showing German midget porn, and he was yelling obscenities at me as I walked around.

In other words, he was being a total pain in the ###.

So pissed that “Mr Glute Pain” came back into my life so abruptly.  Hadn’t heard much from him in ages.

Was planning to run tomorrow and through the weekend, but now going to rest tomorrow so that trails this weekend are hopefully still possible.  Need trails for my sanity.

We run in similar circles.

No running for me this week. I'll continue to walk as I try to finish the flora-bama virtual race.

Left leg hasn't fully recovered, although the pain in my gluteus Medius seems to have moved to my hamstring. Calf feels pulled too. So at least it's getting lower.

Swimming is going, swimmingly.

How'd this guy get into the house? Something's not adding up. Plus he seems like a ####.

Great news, GB.  I can only imagine how brutal that must have been.  Glad it's over.

Talk to me about the bolded...

Back in NYC...about to try a run. I've seen about half of runners in masks. I'll wear my balaclava as a gaiter, but I know it's going to be too hot for that long term.

Think I'll do some hill work...aka, running up and down the Williamsburg bridge a couple times.

You wouldn't know from the disgusting amounts of sweat that I produce, but it seems like my body is maybe starting to adapt to this heat/humidity a little bit.

Ran 6 miles on 6/5 at 7am while my dog was at the groomer.  It was 66/64 when I started.  First mile 8:37/125, last mile 8:08/147, average 8:17/137.

Ran 8 miles today at 7am while my dog was at the groomer.  It was 67/63 when I started (and 72/65 when I finished).  First mile 8:28/123, last mile 7:23/149, average 7:51/135.

Two miles further, almost 30 secs/mile faster with AHR two points lower.

I read an article which suggested that heat adaptation actually increases the amount you sweat.
Sweat doesn’t do any good though when when air is so saturated that it can’t evaporate and just rolls off onto your shorts/shoes

Mid day wasn't a good idea. 86deg/64dp. But mostly my body felt weird running above traffic with noticably worse air quality and amidst a lot of people walking, running and biking.

I used a headband that has earflaps for a mask, with the flaps pulled over my nose and mouth when I passed by people...so up and down constantly. Not viable. Also tough to breath.

But did two out and backs @160' elevation to the top of the bridge. And those downhills...makes me want to redo the 1m. Easy recovery from the climbs at 7:30s. Should be able to crack 6.

Otherwise...yeah. back in NYC

This is one of the reasons why i think it's important to do shorter easy runs during summer. I don't see the point in doing any more miles once I can't keep my HR below 140 without going so relatively slow that I'm probably not getting anything out of it anyway - and that's exactly what happens in summer running. Once the body's ability to cool itself has been effected you have to work harder to compensate.

I was trotting around at a 9 minute clip on Tuesday and noticed throughout the latter part of mile 3 and early part of mile 4 that my HR was keeping up towards that number, so I turned and headed home. Because running the run that i was in its purpose was just to get me ready for the next day. And I did this workout yesterday in 81/65 conditions:

m1 8:11/138

m2 7:31/149

m3 6:58/154

m4 6:28/161

m5 6:54/160

m6 7:28/157

m7 8:05/149

I think if I kept going further Tuesday for the sake of adding mileage despite a HR creep then I think ^^^that output suffers and over time I increase my injury risk.

I have very low expectations for the easy run I'm about to do and I am very much prepared to head home early again, so it doesn't negatively effect tomorrow's scheduled 'long' trail run in a forecasted 82/62. Because ultimately the purpose of this run is to recover from yesterday and prepare for tomorrow. If that's 4 miles with a 135 aHR at a pace north of 9 instead of 6 at a pace near 8 like I was doing in spring then c'est la'vie.

Difference between you and me is that you seem to be prioritizing speed, whereas I'm prioritizing volume right now.  Two different objectives.

This is true - your body adapts by sweating more which would result in more efficient cooling, if it weren't so humid that the sweat doesn't evaporate.

32 miles for me over the past 7 days which is my highest weekly total since ... 2011?

On May 31, I ran 4 miles at a 9:44 pace. Today I did 4 at 8:41. Just need to knock off another 1:03 per mile and I'll be just about at my BQ pace. Oh, plus then run another 22.2 miles at that pace. Gotta start somewhere though

Speed?    16 of my last 21 runs have net 9:03, 10:05, 8:51, 8:57, 9:03, 8:49, 9:00, 8:56, 8:37, 8:44, 8:46, 8:01, 8:53, 8:59, 9:16, and 8:59 paces. Even the speed that I am doing isn't all that intense, relatively speaking anyway. Right now my goal is to toe the line between staying in shape without tiring myself out. Yesterday's workout was hard, but my energy levels were back to normal after 5 minutes in the 'pool.' The last thing I want to do during summer is work out so hard that both exercise is miserable and I'm tired for the parts of summer I want to enjoy.

As it relates to you, if your focus is volume and you don't slow down (or stop) once the HR creeps then summer running is going to be harder. I think your last 5 days has gone better because you did exactly that - slowed down. I think your sufferfest on Saturday had less to do with the conditions and more to do with what you did prior - the HR creep didn't get to you on your Tues and Wed runs of 8-10 miles, but the warning signs were loud and clear on Thursday's 12 - the creep soared on you the final 4 miles than you did 8 more the next day at 7:53. Everything about that Saturday run looks miserable and I think it's fairly easy to see why.

But then you did a real recovery on Sunday - 9:57/aHR 122. Then you did 5 more later that day at 8:12, but kept the aHR to 133 (and very little HR creep). Then Monday night's 5 at 8:26/127 (again, with very little HR creep). So it's of no surprise to me you decided to do an impromptu progression Tuesday in some miserable weather. You were recovered!!! You had the energy to push it so you said eff it and pulled the trigger. My eyebrow is raised at today's workout though. On one hand it's nice to get the apples-to-apples comparison vs a month ago, but the finish was once again through that HR creep. I don't know what your running plans are for this weekend, but if it's anything of consequence and you don't want it to be miserable you gotta do some easy stuff first.

And that was the whole point of my message. Summer running doesn't have to be miserable; you just have to run your slow runs to what your body says to. Do that and when you hit the priority workouts, regardless of your current objective, you're successful...and not miserable.

Nothing of consequence this weekend.  It's a step-back week for me, so my long run is only 12 miles.  I'll do 5 or so tomorrow (maybe trail) and an easy 8 on Sunday.

That made me good look it up and it's free on Amazon prime for right now it seems. Going to watch with my son. One of the best comedies ever.
That and Real Genius (which I watched the other night with my daughter), a hell of a start to Kilmer's career.

100% agree. We did Real Genius together a few months ago.

Also, The Saint is available for free. That's another great movie of his.

Recovery run today with a mask, no problem.

Yesterdays hill/bridge work with a mask, problem.

Any recommendations for something I can run in and not suffocate?

Nope. I would take the same approach you are with the buff/gaiter as needed.

Can you can get away from people on any routes back in the city?  Are trails crowded but streets are less so to spend more time on those routes vs where the crowds are or the city is just too dense to avoid people?

Wow, the glute pain went from absent on Tuesday to "I can barely walk" today.  Tried the trails this morning (hoping the different terrain/footstrike would be better) and now things are as bad as they ever were back in Oct.  That was fast (last year it took months to progress like this).

Just back here to whine about it.  Wife offered me a butt massage.  So there's upside there.

Sucks. How’d you get it to respond last time, upstream/downstream strengthening or PT assist?

Took about a month off, and while it seemed to get the glute pain to a manageable level, my fitness regressed like crazy.  Had trouble (aka procrastination + ####ty Canadian medical system) getting PT last time so it never happened.

Will see if I can have more success in DFW this time.

Sorry all for not posting much lately.  I also shutdown my social media accounts since like the new year. I’ve been very low key the last 6-7 months.

The reason for this is I decided to run for political office. Well, a local municipal election anyway. The election was this past Monday, and I won.  Kinda crazy and I could write for days about the campaign and the election process but prolly better I don’t share :) .

The point of me sharing is that going forward each of you know that when you address me, please use either “Sir” or utilize a virtual 🙇‍♂️
