Who's the new guy? Maybe he likes triathlon‽Hi, welcome to the thread. You should join our Strava group!
I dunno. With some Keds, my Timex, and tracking on MapMyRun, I'm basically set.Hi, welcome to the thread. You should join our Strava group!
I hear you. Yesterday I did some trails and a road hill that was ~9% grade for 1/2 mile, and I was surprised how angry my legs were today. I've been meaning to try to add some more vertical to my runs and this only reinforces that it would be beneficial.Woke up and saw 57 degrees. Had no intentions to run early but since I was only going to do 3 slow miles I figured I might as well just do it. Rolled out of bed and got it done.
Legs felt surprisingly good. Not really tired at all, could have run faster or longer if I wanted but just kept it at minimal effort with an AHR 129. My legs felt much worse a few days ago on a short, slow run after a few days in a row of hills.
Well, heat coming back starting today for the next week. Good thing I get to taper!
Go on.Yes, I definitely look like a 63yo woman.
So, back in December through February, I tried to get at least one hilly route in per week and didn't avoid them for others. I was averaging about 1600-1900' per week at around 40-45 mpw. It was usually between 40-50'/mile. By the end of that stretch, my legs felt really strong and runs began to feel easy. I also didn't have as big of HR spikes going uphill.I hear you. I've been checking that story for updates but no news yet. So sad and eerie.Go on.![]()
It looks like the first post after the start of my unexpected, uh, vacation was about Mrs. Gian's ankle. @gianmarco, so glad that she's doing better and back at it! Sorry to hear about @krista4's toes. Truly bummed to read about @Zasada's friend who disappeared at Waterfall Glen a few days ago. I was just out there two weeks ago. So strange ...it's not an isolated trail, so you'd have to literally go out of your way to avoid being seen/found. Hoping for the best.
Just 2 yrs early on this, but close enough!
Welcome back! Thanks for the TPW on my toes. They stopped hurting, but the left big toenail is definitely going to come off. Everything's black there (or appears to be under my cute aqua toenail polish). I've been a complete slug since my 50.2 miles, so cannot in good conscience read this thread. (So I read it in bad conscience instead.)Go on.![]()

For the most part I haven't either avoided or sought out hills. Doing almost all of my runs locally results in a lot of short, rolling hills. Typically I end up right around 40'/mile for the year, and I'm definitely used to these smaller hills around me and they don't bother me much. So, I wouldn't consider myself a flatlander (except to people like duck or zasada), but there's really a dearth of long or steep hills within running distance for me. I find that if the uphill either lasts longer than a few minutes or gets above a ~5% grade, it gets me out of my comfort zone. The hill that kicked my ### was ~250' over 1/2 mile. I have two very hilly parks less than a 30 minute drive from me - I think when the weather cools off I might try to hit those on the weekends. So, back in December through February, I tried to get at least one hilly route in per week and didn't avoid them for others. As our race was going to be downhill, since then we purposefully avoided elevation to work on pacing and getting easier recoveries. I don't think I hit 1000' even once. My legs have definitely not felt as strong. After the change in venue, I had a week of 1800' and then 2200' the previous week. It was hard but I've already noticed that improvement in HR spike and my legs feel much more like they did back in early March over the last couple days. Especially yesterday, the hills on my route were "easy".
I don't do any leg strength training like some others here. This recent change made me realize that it was definitely the increase in elevation that I think helped me improve during the winter and I won't ignore hills any longer. And it's not even about running them fast. It's just running them.
The one route from our house south is about 330' over 5 miles (60-70'/mile). There's a section I can add to that that ends up being almost 600' over 7 miles with a solid almost 1 mile climb (over 80'/mile). I will be doing that at least once every couple weeks.
The marathon we are doing is about 30'/mile which, while not downhill, now looks much better than it did a few weeks ago.
But, the mistake I made was trying to use that hilly route to recover. Even at slow speeds, it's still a workout.
My better judgment was telling me not to, but I made an edgy quip regarding a general group of people who follow a particular politician. Apparently someone took offense.@tri-man 47 What did you do that got you in trouble? (Don't worry. You can say. No mods come in this thread.)

You guys are ready.I haven't been posting much lately in preparation for the upcoming 2 week barrage.
But in all seriousness, I'm good. I feel like I'm in a good spot and mentally comfortable as well. Wednesday certainly helped. My biggest source of stress in the upcoming two weeks will be dealing with one who shall remain unnamed.
I wonder how much faster I would run if I had this kind of support yelling in my ear. So often I succumb to my mental weakness.
I ran slow today! Look at me!After working on my pacing yesterday, I stupidly did my recovery with too much on my mind and didn't pay attention to my pace. Felt good, but not what I needed with a long run for tomorrow...if I wake up on time (been struggling with that lately)
Congrats!...?On a side note, just found out Mrs. ChiefD got approved for permanent work from home.
So we are currently looking to move up north if we can get the stars aligned. I'm getting our house ready to sell. The timetable is probably early spring of 2021, but we would rather find something in the next few months so we can actually look at lake property without the whole thing being frozen under.
But realistically, we hope to move by June of next year. God willing. The shovels will be making the move.
All of them.

Because you want to spend more money on Garmin product https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/649059I get to join the "My Garmin Died" club. Yay! Thing was wonky with the music for the past 2 months (got it November 2019) and now won't even power on.
One thing I didn't appreciate when I got my watch is that Garmin Forerunner 645 doesn't broadcast HR and cadence during activity via Bluetooth (whereas the 245 does do this). The 645 only broadcasts HR and only via ANT+. Who would care about this? Someone that can't run who wants to use Zwift Run using an ellipitcal but can't with the 645.![]()
sorry, gb. I obviously know nothing about central Minn. where are you now? KC?setting a high bar, I see.![]()

No worries, I didn't take it as a bad thing. Central Minnesota does sound like a place literally in the middle of nowhere, and it is.**sets outlook reminder for January 2022 to check in and see what Chef thinks about winter running**

Trails are better than roads in the winter. And at least every run isn't a sweatfeast. Soon you'll learn about layering!![]()
The funny thing is, I am way more productive running in winter instead of summer. We have the treadmill now, so that will help. And in reality, I believe my road racing days are over. At least for awhile.
Man, I hope I live long enough for this to happen so I can hear your comments about running in Florida. And we want to retire up there and eventually have a small condo or something in Florida or the Carolinas.
does it measure/broadcast cadence or speed? Feel like I would need that for Zwift Run, no?Because you want to spend more money on Garmin product https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/649059
That's what I got fro Zwift, works great.
Lakefront in Minnesota - you're going to have to narrow it down for proper stalkingNo worries, I didn't take it as a bad thing. Central Minnesota does sound like a place literally in the middle of nowhere, and it is.
Which is what we want. We are in KC now - yes. I've really started to hate the summers here - it seems to be getting more and more humid every year. And we love the lake life - the plan is to get a lakefront house there with a little land. We just love the outdoor life - as I mentioned before we love all those activities.
And that spot has great jumping off points for other things - there is a great trail system there. There are plenty of different lakes and rivers to explore. We can ice fish and snowmobile in the winter.
My 12 year old also plays hockey, so the idea of pond hockey and skating outside our back door is awesome. We love having bonfires.
So for us, this is heaven. Winters will take some getting used to, but we are planning on embracing it and living out in it.
Nope, just HR. I would assume your treadmill would connect that data via bluetooth. That's how the bike trainer works. All the cadence/speed stuff comes from the trainer. HR was the only thing I was missing, hence the HRM Dual from Garmin.does it measure/broadcast cadence or speed? Feel like I would need that for Zwift Run, no?
I drove about 3 hours north of Minneapolis last year and once you're outside the city, it's lake after lake after lake after lake after lake after lake after lake after lake after lake after...well you get the idea.Lakefront in Minnesota - you're going to have to narrow it down for proper stalking![]()
