Ran a 10k - Official Thread (4 Viewers)

I drove about 3 hours north of Minneapolis last year and once you're outside the city, it's lake after lake after lake after lake after lake after lake after lake after lake after lake after...well you get the idea.
We drove Duluth to Fargo - wife and I were trying to irritate the kids by every 30 seconds pointing excitedly and saying "Look, a lake!"

 
On a side note, just found out Mrs. ChiefD got approved for permanent work from home.

So we are currently looking to move up north if we can get the stars aligned. I'm getting our house ready to sell. The timetable is probably early spring of 2021, but we would rather find something in the next few months so we can actually look at lake property without the whole thing being frozen under.

But realistically, we hope to move by June of next year.  God willing. The shovels will be making the move.

My house will be the farmer’s market. We will have some land, so there will be a large garden. So the report will change but there will be all kinds of new and kooky stuff going on. 

Don't forget the Cokes.  They all aren't the same.
Yeah, this is a solid point. My daily fountain drink will go by the wayside. But this will be a good thing overall.

Nope, just HR. I would assume your treadmill would connect that data via bluetooth. That's how the bike trainer works. All the cadence/speed stuff comes from the trainer. HR was the only thing I was missing, hence the HRM Dual from Garmin.

I'd have to look into this further, but I'd swear there are lakes in places with...good weather.  Then again, those places don't have much use for all those shovels.

 
Actually completed a 2020 goal this morning!

No, not a pushup, that's just crazy talk.

A 2019 goal of mine was to complete the Moose Mountain 29K race in under 4 hours.  But due to a fire lookout demolition closing the trail, the race was rerouted to trails that weren't actually on Moose Mountain.  And were ~5K shorter.  And not as much elevation gain.  Thus, no way to achieve that goal in 2019.

So I moved the goal to 2020. 

And then there's COVID, and the race went virtual:  "Just run whatever 29K you can, vouch for your time, and you can have an unofficial and unranked result."

The virtual window opened last Monday, and closes a week from tomorrow.  But today was the date of the originally scheduled race.  So my friend and I decided to try to run the race as designed.  Run the course itself, rather than some flat 29K, and on the morning of when the race would have been.

So this morning we got out at 0545, headlamps on, and fired-up our watches at what would have been the starting line.  I won't do a full race report, but it was great.  I pushed myself as hard as my reduced fitness would allow, and getting up onto the mountain was great.  Except for the freezing rain.  And gale force winds.  At least there was a rainbow.  So it was a tough slog climbing with my glasses caked in ice/sleet and the stinging every time the wind blew that #### into my eyes.  We couldn't get to the turnaround point fast enough, but we did.  On the way back, the weather cleared a bit, and we even got to see some wildlife.  

My lack of fitness hit me in the last 5K and had to walk some sections.  My friend was very nice, and walked with me, even though he could have easily run the whole thing 30 minutes faster than I did.  At least.

But I got it done, got home, and despite being sore and tired, my glute isn't particularly bad and I'm ready to proudly don my race tshirt, and eat the pizza.  ALL THE PIZZA.

The numbers:

  • 29.1K (18.1mi)
  • 999m elevation gain (3,278ft)
  • 3:47:51 elapsed time
  • 2 deer
  • 2 grouse
  • 1 cow
  • Zero poops
Admittedly the time goal was a low bar, set when I wasn't as fit as I am now (even at my reduced level from my peak a few months ago).  But it's nice to knock-out at least one of my 2020 goals, COVID be damned.

A story I like to share, as told by my cousin, who is retired from the FBI.  The Unibomber (look him up, kids) used to ride his bike down from his cabin up on a hill when he went into town to mail his bombs.  A lady in town let him leave his bike at her place while he was in town ...with no clue as to what he was actually doing.  In gratitude, the Unibomber would bring her tomatoes from his garden.  One time, as she explained to the FBI after his capture, he had invited her up to see his place.  Looking around, she noticed he didn't have a bathroom, so she asked him where he "went."  He pointed to his garden.  "I told him not to bring me any more tomatoes," she said to the FBI.

Moose Mountain is fairly high elevation, and always seems to get crazy weather.  Not unusual to have snow near the peak in late Aug / early Sep.

No phone, no belt. If a medium run (+1h15) I'll throw a GU or shot blocks in my shorts and if 2h+ I'll bring ID plus some money. Nothing else ever comes with me on a run.

Do most of you guys take GUs or other fuel during runs over 75 minutes? If not, what's your threshold for using it?

Personally, I never used anything until this training cycle other than during a longer race. Up until now, I've only used it for long runs that are 14+ miles which is about 2h15min. But, when I use them, I take them every 45 minutes and I do notice I feel better within 10 minutes of taking that first one. Today, I ran 8 miles (80 minutes) and decided to bring the little bit of GU I had left in the flask from my last long run and took it about 5 miles in. It might have made the end of the runa little bit easier. 

Got me thinking if most of you do that or not.

I'll bring fuel in runs:

1. Tempo type over an hour

2. Long runs over 2 hours

I haven't ran long this summer yet (10 easy doesn't count) but I haven't carried anything including water on a run since February's HM.

But I do take water for rides an hour or more and add either some honey and salt or tailwind on rides over 90 minutes.  Part of the reason for taking water on rides is I might get a flat and be out there longer than planned. Running doesn't bring that problem except injury.

I've been carrying my Nathan handheld bottle for runs exceeding 75 minutes, particularly given the heat this summer.  I haven't brought any GUs with me, though yesterday's 16 miler was my longest run since October.

On another note, if Boston happens in 2021, how fast will that field be?  How low will the cutoff be?   From the last of the FAQs on the BAA website:

(Q) When will registration for the 2021 Boston Marathon open?
(A) Registration for the 2021 Boston Marathon will open towards the end of September 2020. The beginning of the qualifying window to be used for application and entry into the 2021 Boston Marathon has been established to be September 15, 2018, which means that we will accept qualifying performances posted for the 2020 event into the 2021 race, as well. Achieving and submit
ting a qualifying time during Boston Marathon registration does not guarantee acceptance into the Boston Marathon.

So they'll have 2 1/2 years of qualifiers, although virtually no one will qualify in these final months (unless they run in, say, Minoqua).  But, still - a full two years of qualifiers, and the likelihood of a smaller field ...if the race can even be run. @gruecd, you always have a good sense of these things.  What do you think?  BQ -?   

 
I only take some chews/gels on certain long runs during marathon training when I'm trying to get used to it.

I only drink on long runs when it's hot.

 
Dum dum as I leave for most runs.

I will take chews with me as reserves on any SoS run an hour plus. Try not to carry water, but won't force the issue if hot. 

This is new to this year, but per recommendations from others I will not take reserves if it's a steady pace run up to 2 hours. Idea is to challenge myself and finish on little/no fuel. Uncomfortable during, but efficiency improvements later. Over 2 hours I will bring fuel with me, but wait as long as possible before starting. I'm liberal with water regardless though. 

Progression long runs i fuel like race day. The honey jam sammy's we talked about in winter. One early, one midway, then chews late. Also liberal with water.

During summer I store the hand held in the freezer, usually starts to thaw about when i get thirsty and takes > 90 minutes before lukewarm. Just don't over fill before putting in the freezer - water expends when freezing. 

 
Alright, was wondering if I was in the minority on not fueling. Seems not.

I will be a little more liberal with fueling this week as I probably deleted a good bit of glycogen stores during my long run but, other than water, I otherwise don't consider it unless out there over 2 hrs.

 
I've been looking for ways to improve my running, cycling and kayaking. I think I'll take MAC's lead and go buy a case / bag of dum dums. It works well for him.

Who's with me?

Next level will be swimming with the dum dum.

I’m still dealing with cramps after a hard workout and trying to actually address it instead of just BAMFing it. I did some calculations based on the data and ended up with a 4 oz deficit for the workout. Figure that had something to do with it.

I don't track that data. Resting hr, performance hr, sleep, active calorie burn, vo2 max, and steps are my go-to's. But staying hydrated is only an issue with me after a night of drinking. If anything I drink too much water day to day.

It’s typically not an issue for me, only on the longer, harder workouts. According to Garmin my estimated sweat loss was 2,863 ml. I took in 2,721 ml during the workout.

 
A nun here in Chicago is halfway through a treadmill marathon, being multistreamed live.  (She'd been a college runner at University of Illinois.)
It says in this article that no woman has ever submitted a timed treadmill marathon to the Guinness Book of World Records.  How is that possible?

Ironically, I did a long treadmill run today, too.  16-mile progression, and it honestly wasn't that terrible.  Watched 2+ episodes of "World's Toughest Race."  Cool show.

I'll carry water/Gatorade and GU for most runs of 10+ miles.  Whether or not I bring hydration for shorter runs depends on the weather.  This time of year, I carry something to drink on almost every single run.

Mostly no. Not gels unless pretty deep into training on runs closer to 2 hours or a long tempo. Stick a small bottle of water on my waist band on hot runs and if it’s a SoS I sometimes add some Tailwind or stick a few jelly bellys in my pocket.

Man.  So many unknowns that it's really hard to say.  If we'd raced in 2020 (cutoff BQ-1:39), and if we knew that 2021 was going to be a "normal" year with a regular-sized field, I'd probably guess that you'd need a buffer of 3:30 or so.  I'd have to imagine that there's been a lower-than-usual number of new qualifiers for 2021, but like you said, the other big variable is the field size.  To be honest, if you put a gun to my head right now and made me guess one way or the other, I'd bet that the race ends up getting canceled (just like Big Sur already did).  That said, if I was racing in the next few weeks and looking to qualify for next spring, I think I'd feel pretty good if I could get a BQ-5.

I used to be 75 minutes, but I think 80 is more money.

90 for me.

I never carry water on runs ~1hr in duration.  I used to do 2hr runs with no water, but that was when most of them were up north and I wasn't sweating much.  Now I try to stash water at the halfway point, and should be carrying more on top of that.  Especially after I saw that I lost 4lbs (almost 2L) on just a 1hr run in the TX heat.

My ~4hr trail run on Saturday, I only took 500mL with me, and that was a huge mistake.  Last 5K was brutal, I was totally gassed.  Most of that was probably degraded fitness, some of it was probably elevation, but I need to be better about hydration and fueling on those longer efforts.  I'm terrible with it.

Wasn't there an elite marathoner in the '70s who would munch on candy bars during races?  I think I read a profile on him after he had caused some controversy by declaring that 5 and 6 hour marathoners weren't really running a marathon.  He seemed like quite the character - there was a story about him leading a race and the motorcycle escort asked is he was going fast enough, to which he replied "no" and proceeded to pass the escort.

Yeah, definitely an American.  I feel like he grew up on a farm or a really rural area at any rate, and kind of burst onto the scene because he was doing all of his training on his own so no one knew about him until he started winning races.  Google search failed for me as well.

 
My kids started school today which is all virtual (1st and 3rd grades).  

This is going to definitely impact daily life around here.  My wife is changing her schedule to have 2 full days off to help with school, but that involves her now leaving for work earlier and getting home later on her working days.  Grandparents are going to help out with some school 2 days a week and I am in charge the other day plus mornings/evening when my wife works (including soccer practice nights for the kids).

I am very grateful that we actually can make this work and that I have flexibility to work from home.

But, now to #####, this is going to suck!  Not sure how/when I am going to get my running in other than super early morning.  I was resisting getting out the Tracer360 light vest and headlamp, but I think I am going to have to fire those up.

Early am is about all I have available to me as well. Once we get back to the city and "school", all my runs will need to be in the books by 7:30 at the latest.

I do remember reading that early Kona IMs had racers stopping in delis and stores for food and drink. Pretty sure they had cash on their persons.

Welcome to my living hell. I mean, I love my kids - and things could be so much worse. But, seriously. This is like death by a thousand paper cuts day after day.
