Ran a 10k - Official Thread (10 Viewers)

I'm doing the Des Plaines River Trail Marathon this year. Did the half last year and really enjoyed it. It'll be my 2nd marathon (did Chicago in 2013). Hoping for better weather than last year when it rained!
Did my third 20 miler Saturday morning as I continue to follow a slightly modified Hal Higdon training schedule - a new PR for that distance - 2 hours and 41 minutes. Should be on pace to at least meet my goal of 3:43 for the marathon.
Either you over ran that 20 miler or you are setting your goal too low! Nice work.
Maybe I should adjust my goal - I made it back in June knowing I would be switching jobs and moving out of state (just completed the move about a month ago so starting to feel settled). I wasn't sure how adjusting to the new chapter in life would affect training and everything. I really did push the run though, so maybe over-ran it a bit as well. Can't help myself sometimes :P

Right, that's about 8:00 pace which for 26.2 is about 3:30, I think. If he's did that on a training run, sounds like he sound try for sub 3:30 weather permitting if not faster.

When is your marathon? You doing any races before? If you can fit in a half marathon, that's a great way to see what you're capable of.

Race day is October 17th. I don't have any races planned in the meantime. 12 miles this weekend, 20 next weekend, then 12 and 8 the last 2 weekends heading into the race. I could just pretend this weekend is a half marathon race and really push it.

Ned, I wouldn't try too hard to over-analyze the race. 26.2 can humble you.

Chief says he won't go on strava because he's embarrassed by being slow. Well, Chief, I ran a 7-miler this morning at an 11:26 pace. This is roughly the speed of continental drift. Soon I will be slower than Lot's wife (an Old Testament reference).
Lot's wife had a little problem with salt ...something we can relate to as distance runners.

So here's a question. I'm scheduled for a 20 miler on Sunday, and after last weekends run I'm pondering whether I should try and run this 20 miler at somewhere around a 9:00 pace. That would be a full 30 seconds slower than my run this past weekend.

Or should I just run it as a normal run, where I just try and stay within my target HR (somewhere in the 140's). That would probably put me on around a 10:00 pace. This is my last really long run before the taper, so I'm wondering if I ought to push it a little and really get a gauge for where I am.

The weather looks promising for Sunday morning, so would be a good test I think. Thoughts?

Maybe run a 20/10-12 type of run where you do the first 8 at your normal LR effort, and then do the last 10-12 at MP effort. 20mi is a tough run no matter how you run it, so be careful.

While that was a great run last weekend, I'd caution on letting that cloud your judgement on future expectations. Its a great sign of improved fitness, but don't let a single run (good or bad) drive any big decisions.

Maybe start out conservatively and pick it up the second half if you're feeling strong?

Edit: Yep, what Ned said.

That race did a number on me. Quads and calves are sore. Not too bad when I'm running for the most part but more so the last few mornings when I wake up and after I've been inactive for a while. This will probably be my my last big mileage week so hopefully I get over this soon.

Yeah, I don't know that you have to push your 12 miler that hard. Just keep doing what you're doing and maybe readjust your marathon goal down 10 minutes or so.

I bike the DPRT every weekend now it seems. Looks like this race is further north on the same trail. Maybe I can bike north that day and see if I can heckle you as you run.

It's a great course. I've raced on that trail (generally south of Great America) for both a HM and marathon ...one of my all-time favorites. The wood chip trail weaves through fields and forest with very little elevation change. It's actually easy to cut some distance by running the tangents as the trail meanders along (something most runners ignore). I'd try to catch the race, but I'll be in St. Louis for a conference.

yep, I've hiked much of that trail / course. Should be really scenic mid-October. I'll probably be out there every nice weekend morning in October.

####ty week to have a century ride. I've been too busy to get on the bike at all, probably won't until maybe I'll get some time Friday.

But at least after this week I can hang up the bike for a few months (probably ride once a week or so)

Ned - I'm sure this race must have been incredibly frustrating but try to think about the incredible shape you are in. Your fitness is reflected in YEARS of training, not in a 3+ hour run at a random race in October. You are in the best shape of your life and its because of your dedication and hard work. Congratulations on making it to this place. Furthermore, there is no one on this site who is more positive about other's accomplishments and training. It speaks volumes about the type of person you are.

Stand up. Knock the dust off. Hold your head high. I'm proud to know you first as an iFriend and then we met in real life and helped each other PR a couple years back (when you used to be slow!)

I'm looking forward to watching your races going forward, regardless of the distance.
Just to echo this is a great post. Sums up Ned as a great guy, and reminds me that this really is about the journey, not the destination. You will have future great races thanks to all the hard work you've put in - as my son tells me all the time, especially when things don't work out as he wants them, "On to the next one."

Speaking of my son, cross country is off to a decent start. They are a very young team and should be a powerhouse in a couple of year's like 2Y2BB son's, but not this year. They have a phenom freshman who has emerged as #1, my son (a senior) is #2 and then a couple of decent underclassmen at 3 and 4. Still waiting for a #5 to emerge, the lack of one is going to hurt them in a lot of meets. They lost by 1 point yesterday - frosh and son finished 1-2, but opponent then took the next 4 places. It's cool to see this freshman arrive on the scene and it has definitely motivated my son to run faster - he finished 3 seconds behind the kid yesterday - but it's also been cool to see my son begin to take on a leadership role with the younger kids. He's not a big rah rah guy, but he is very encouraging to all the younger kids and also goes full-out every practice with a smile on his face, so I feel like he is setting a good example and helping his teammates be their best.

My kid had his first meet yesterday. Yes, a Tuesday - weird. So I didn't get to go as it was 2 hours away and basically chewed up an entire workday. He came in at 22:30 or thereabouts and was solidly mid-pack. The course had 6 creek crossings (over waist deep) and he evidently had a guy use his back as a launcher on one of them. So, yeah, he had a good time. He finished second in his team (first guy was at about 16 flat), mostly because two better runners left shoes in the creek - they had guys in the creek with sticks to retrieve stuck shoes, evidently there are lots and lots of those.

He's still gunning for my 20:30. I'm not going to tell him it would be easier on a road course. Hopefully he won't figure that out for a while. :P

On my end I got in a nice Tuesday ride. Probably the last one for the season. :kicksrock:

LOL ..I just saw Bear Gryllis last night as he found his way out of the backwoods of Alabama ...including a river crossing with a lot of muck at the bottom.

Good start to the week coming off the HM Saturday. Took sunday off, then a 4M recovery (8:51) on Monday. Had a solid 7.4M run yesterday at lunch, lots of hills, 8:20 pace.

Was not sure what the plan was heading out this morning. Weather was perfect, 50s with low humidity, did a slow mile to start and felt good so decided to do HM goal pace for the next 5.

7:40

7:40

7:36

7:12

6:58

7:26/148 for those 5, then backed off a little on the last 1.2 (7:45).

Very happy with these last two runs, especially with legs that aren't fully recovered from the trail HM. Will go easy next couple of days then get something longer in over the weekend. Feeling confident that with another 5 weeks of traing I can run something close to 7:35s for the HM which would be 10 min faster than same race last year. Also planning to do a local 5K on 9/27.

Completing the Tuesday trifecta, my son raced yesterday too. Crazy temp change from the 50s Saturday to the high 80s yesterday and it showed on a tougher course. It was a Jamboree yesterday (7 teams each competing against each other as if it was 6 separate dual meets). The scoring for each of the dual meets is not out yet, but scored as an invite it was almost a three way tie for the win with only 5 points separating the top three teams; 1st had 65, 2nd had 68 & 3rd, my sons school, had 70. I theory, they like went 4 & 2 on the day, but I need to dig in because if there was a tie, it defaults to who had the fastest 6th runner. Speaking of the 6th runner, my son got out kicked for 6th finishing varsity 7th in 18:48. This was after :X a bit in the last mile which took away any kick he typically has. Staying 7th was a HUGE deal as the varsity races at Michigan State University on Friday (3rd race in 7 days). Watching the race there was one of the best sporting events I've ever seen in person. They have about a dozen high school races, each with 40 or more teams (close to 300 races per). The use one of the university golf courses and overgrow the grass prior. Then, they mow a "track" of shorter grass that essentially becomes a 15 meter wide grass 5K track. I am going to try an GoPro the event.

I'm definitely going to try and hit one of the San Francisco nights in November.

I'm also hoping to make it to the local showing of a new Western States movie, This Is Your Day, tomorrow night. Because, you know, I need to further fuel my obsession with that race. Karl, one of the three runners it focuses on, is a friend of mine who I saw several times at aid stations this year with the cameras around him. Who knows, I may even be in the background of a shot or two.

Screw cancer!!!

Sadly, my father passed away late last night after 2 years fighting multiple brain tumors.

While I have been preparing for this for a while (and definitely in the last 2 weeks), its still hard. I still have no idea how to really tell my kids tonight. They are aware he has been sick and my son grasps it a bit more than my daughter. I am incredibly thankful for the time I had with him on this earth. Incredibly thankful that I was able to go up there 3 times in the past several months to be there. The whole family is very thankful for all the thoughts of people...and that to the end he had no complaints of pain, and never experienced any seizures. I am amazed by the courage and strength my step-mother has shown to ensure my dad fought and died with dignity. She lost a sister, sister-in-law, and now her husband of 35 years over the past year and a half. While we all mourn and thoughts and prayers are appreciated for all involved...please include her in any thoughts as I think she needs it more than anyone right now.

Also hugely thankful for all of the home health care nurses that have helped take care of my dad the past few months. They were amazing people.

Just had to put a bit out there in this form as Im still trying to come up with some sort of write up or thoughts or something to say at the service if called upon.

Running has always been a bit therapeutic as is venting a bit.

GL all.

So it's been an odd running year for me. A February ankle injury almost derailed Boston, but that race turned out to be emotionally powerful and a successful run despite insufficient training and lousy conditions. My first-ever ultra marathon in mid-June was also successful despite a lack of race-specific training and clumsy running over the back half of the race. Two other HMs in the middle of all that went well enough. Lately, I've been fighting a long-lingering and rather frustrating piriformis issue. It's now kept me from running, right when I thought I'd be powering up with my new academic schedule (=freedom). Just a choppy year balancing some successes with a couple of injuries. But ...today I was able to register for Boston, 2016! This will be a significant "A" race for me since I'll race in a new AG and with designs of placing high in the AG in this premier event. I'll run cautiously next week at the Dances with Dirt relay, but after that, I'll set my sights fully on gearing up for Boston.

Ned, I'm hoping the numbers work out for you with next week's registration!!

Awesome Tri, pretty sure I'll be doing the charity entry for Boston one more time, then trying to qualify next fall for 2018.

Fingers crossed for Ned!

My daughter came in 3rd over all, 2nd on team, 21:40 (7:08/7:27/7:05). Not a particularly fast group but very solid debut and she's thrilled.

Weren't you going to get back into doing triathlons next year too? Will that be after Boston?

My son had a meet on Monday also. 5 teams, I suspect his team won. He finished 2nd overall with a 21:03, probably 10 secs behind first. Small charter schools so we're not talking the competition some of your kids are up against. Very impressed that he gutted through the IT bank issue. I saw him and mile 2 and it was kind of a hobble/limp gait. That's about a 20 second improvement over Sat but it was an easier course. He's still shooting to break 19 if the knee comes cooperates. He's losing a lot of good train time due to this injury. Next meet is 2 weeks away.

He also decided he wanted to go the marathon distance in Feb and will be lining up with me at the Black Mt (Mitchell) Marathon. He's officially signed up.

31 spots left if anyone is up for a trail marathon in winter.
that's actually really tempting. A good buddy lives between Black mountain and Asheville so I'd even have a place to crash.

I'll register as soon as my buddy confirms that he'll be around that weekend. And skip the hundred this year. Works better with the HIM in may.

Ah, that's the marathon and not the 40? That's disappointing.

Sand, 2Y2BB, The_Man, Nigel & BnB - So cool on the XC progress. Are we all aging that much that we have so many kids in XC? I'm super jealous and pray my boys (9 & 6) take up XC.

6 miles of trail running this evening. Great weather.

I still have problems getting going. When my legs and knees are warm I seem to have so much better runs. Problem is I don't have the time to always do that.

Great week so far. 3 days of running 9:40-9:45 with my HR staying at 149. Then tonight ran 4 at the same, then kicked it up for 2 to MP. Ran about an 8:35 with a HR in the high 160s. (Heat came back today). Gotta plug in the watch for final details.

But so far staying in a GREAT groove right now.

That's a fantastic debut. I have to think she will be closing in on 20 quickly and pressing for O/A #1 before long.

As I recall, you son is a Freshman, right? My son battled all kinds of pains for the first month plus of his freshman race season. All of a sudden, around the second week of October, it all went away and he started to have big drops. I've seen the same thing happen to a bunch of other kids over the last few years. I hope the IT thing in temporary!

Sorry for your loss, Sho.

My kid officially finished 130th out of 261. Top half! :P

So FUBAR you're skipping the century this weekend? Was thinking about doing it but my kid has a game that morning. So I've been wavering a bit.

Weren't you going to get back into doing triathlons next year too? Will that be after Boston?
Yes, that's my plan. It'll definitely be after Boston. I hope to join a club soon, which will allow me to cross-train through the winter (and run indoors on the worst of days).
