Speaking of my son, cross country is off to a decent start. They are a very young team and should be a powerhouse in a couple of year's like 2Y2BB son's, but not this year. They have a phenom freshman who has emerged as #1, my son (a senior) is #2 and then a couple of decent underclassmen at 3 and 4. Still waiting for a #5 to emerge, the lack of one is going to hurt them in a lot of meets. They lost by 1 point yesterday - frosh and son finished 1-2, but opponent then took the next 4 places. It's cool to see this freshman arrive on the scene and it has definitely motivated my son to run faster - he finished 3 seconds behind the kid yesterday - but it's also been cool to see my son begin to take on a leadership role with the younger kids. He's not a big rah rah guy, but he is very encouraging to all the younger kids and also goes full-out every practice with a smile on his face, so I feel like he is setting a good example and helping his teammates be their best.
My kid had his first meet yesterday. Yes, a Tuesday - weird. So I didn't get to go as it was 2 hours away and basically chewed up an entire workday. He came in at 22:30 or thereabouts and was solidly mid-pack. The course had 6 creek crossings (over waist deep) and he evidently had a guy use his back as a launcher on one of them. So, yeah, he had a good time. He finished second in his team (first guy was at about 16 flat), mostly because
two better runners left shoes in the creek - they had guys in the creek with sticks to retrieve stuck shoes, evidently there are lots and lots of those.
He's still gunning for my 20:30. I'm not going to tell him it would be easier on a road course. Hopefully he won't figure that out for a while.
On my end I got in a
nice Tuesday ride. Probably the last one for the season.
