Ran a 10k - Official Thread (12 Viewers)

By the way, I know it's way early, but who plans on running Boston in 2016? I'm on the fence but it might make a difference if some thread members were willing to entertain me.

I'll be going, but unless they accept non-qualifiers it will be as a spectator, only.

####, that post got me to think to confirm dates. Doubt I can swing Boston next year. Thought the wedding I am going to in New Hampshire was April 15, it's April 22. I was planning on a long weekend, but I don't think I can swing a whole week off this time of year.

####!

I'll be applying, but I need to get lucky to get in.
Or you could just run another marathon a tad bit faster... :)
 We'll chat about this I'm sure, but remember what you said about your 2:59? That's how I felt, and still feel, about my last marathon.

I wonder if you are going to change your mind after Monday.

Grue said he could have done better if he didn't have a lingering cold?

I believe the words were "never ####### again".

That race took years off my life, I swear.
Listen here you big pansy. Part of the reason I'm going for the marathon this year is because of watching your (and others) training progress. The progress you and everyone makes around here is incredible. That race you ran is scratching the surface of where you can be, and you worked so hard to get to that point. And you were cruising that day.

Why the heck do you think I've gone through the agony of this HR training? Because you and everyone else here who have been down that road told me what could happen if I stick to it. And I'm now really seeing the benefits of it and am excited again about my future in running.

Now guess what? Your turn. Get back out there and kick some ### Ned. Because if I can do it, you sure the hell can.

I expect to be there (via a requalification on Monday).

And to mention: S### just got real for Monday. I believe I've mentioned that the sister of one my former grad students was severely injured in the bombing (she was near the finish, having watched her daughter finish the race). I've used her as motivation on behalf of all those who injured or died, and we've had a couple of communications through sister/former student. Last night, she sent me a very encouraging email, noting that she'll be running the race with me in spirit and following along on-line. She also provided an update on her continuing recovery ...that she is able to walk a couple miles now (she's a former runner herself), but still suffers from PTSD while her daughter and husband continue to deal with survivor's guilt. It's an honor to carry that with me on Monday, but it will be an emotional day, I'm sure.

One week to go! Boston forecast looking quite good - close to 50 degrees for the mid-morning start and moving into the low/mid 50s with clear skies.
Still seven days out you f'n jinx!
Update: rainy, windy and raw...
:bowtie:

A little nastiness will take our minds off the rest of the pain.
Let's hope the hourly forecast holds. Aside from increasing winds at lunch, it's looking pretty solid! http://www.wunderground.com/q/zmw:02101.1.99999#horizontal-day-109

Yup, woke up to a better forecast than when I went to bed...I wish I could stop obsessing over it but it's what I do.

My right foot is a little shorter than my left. Throughout my training I've felt like my right foot slides around in my shoe while my left feels just right. I get a hot spot in the ball of the right, my sock feels like it bunches up, and I find myself curling my toes on my right foot to compensate. I bought a fresh pair of size 11s last week and on my ten miler Saturday felt like my foot was coming out of it. It was all I could think about as I ran.

So I went out after my Saturday run and bought a pair of 10.5s and have run four times this week w/ a 10.5 on right and 11 on left. Kind of goofy but it feels great so I'm rolling with it. Used cash from my secret sock drawer gambling stash to fund it. No need to explain dropping 300 in two days on two pairs of shoes, two that I'll never use, to anyone but you nerds.

Did you buy different shoes than the 11s? That would be fun.

Probably worth buying two pairs at the same time from now on to avoid differing wear on each. donate the matching pair.

runningwarehouse.com or amazon usually have good deals. I like to wear 1 model year back so I can scoop up the deals when they're trying to make room for the newest models. You can get them as cheap as $65 on amazon if you're lucky.

Same shoe, Brooks Glycerins, and I only ran 10 miles more on the left so no difference in wear. Will go the online older model in future, good idea.

I remember the first time I had 4 pairs of shoes show up at the door. My wife looked at me with that WTF look. "But this is like buy one get one free!!!" :excited:

Yeah, this is how I've been buying mine. Usually I can find my Mizuno's for $49-$59 a pair. I have pretty good luck at the race expos too when the stores around here are dumping inventory.

Which reminds me, I'm due for another pair.

Speaking of "models" here. Is the glide 5 the same shoe as the glide 6 (replace with whatever model you have) with different colors and/or different assembly etc? All the technical aspects the same? Not sure how to ask my question, but I got the shoes I did because I run closer to the outside of my foot and these shoes were best for that type of stride. Wondering if the next "model" of that shoe is also best for that stride or do I need to go to the shoe store each time I want shoes until I learn them all?

I think not doing the leg workout is to my benefit. I struggled a little bit today, but not like I have been the past few Fridays. I didn't do leg workout yesterday like I normally do. Did another round of upper/abs instead.

I've never worry about getting the newest model. If I have a model I like, I'll keep buying them on-line or at Sports Authority.

Yup, the Glide will always be a stability/control shoe (or whatever it is). They just tweak things like heel drop, weight, colors, etc. I haven't been to a B&M shoe store in years.

That's what I'm trying to do, but it doesn't appear to be in saucony's business model to keep them around for very long. That's why I asked if the newer models are essentially the same. When I do find the exact model I have, the newer models are still cheaper for some reason. I think I might be doing the internet wrong.

I'd think given your knee issues that more leg strength would be better for you.

My knee issues aren't a strength problem. They are a cartilage problem. Early on in life when I hit my growth spurt I did have ligament problems and I had a pretty intense regiment I had to do in 9th and 10th grade, but that's not been an issue for 20 years.

Yep. Good luck to all the Boston runners. We'll be watching the progress next week.

Special thanks to Ned for continuing to update 1st post in thread!

True 'dat.

Running the Boston 5k race on Saturday. I took a few months off from running, but started up a month ago. I've been running the 5k at around 26 minutes without pushing myself too hard. Everyone tells me that I'll run faster during the race. What is a realistic expectation for improvement. I want to get down to an 8 minute mile pace. I've also read that you should not start too fast, but I've also read the opposite that people say to start fast and then just will through it at the end. What is the best approach for my first 5k?
I'd say don't make it a discouraging event by flying out of the gates ...don't sprint. But take off at a pace that's somewhat uncomfortable, knowing it will continue to feel harder as the race proceeds. You could try something around an 8 minute mile and see how long you can sustain it ...that could bring you in close to 25 minutes. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.
Thanks, I appreciate the input. Really want to crack 24 minutes.

signed up for my first 5k. Saturday night April 25th.

I ran 5k yesterday with the dog at 29:25. each mile I ran was faster than the previous one. I was breathing hard but nothing too bad.

how much quicker will I run a race? will adrenaline kick in and get me more around 28:00? its only 5k so I was thinking of just running balls out (for me, that'd be just under 9:00 min/mi) for a mile or two and see what happens. worst thing that can happen is I have to walk for 30 seconds before picking up the pace again.
Run the first mile like it's a one mile race and then just try to hang on. You do this and I'm confident you finish under 27 minutes...and likely vomit.
I ran a practice 5k today. Mile 1 8:33

Mile 2 9:00

Mile 3 9:21

27:50 overall

HR was between 172-180 for most of it

Definitely felt lightheaded when I got done. Had to lay down for 20 minutes before I felt right again.

Nice job. Run some really slow miles for the next 2 weeks. Then go out and kill it race day.

You could always return them and claim that they are mismatchedd. I mean they only cost about $2 to make and they are still making more producing two pairs to get you to buy one. The mfgr definitely would prefer that to you switching to another company. Ditto the retailer.
