Ran a 10k - Official Thread (5 Viewers)

Thought this would be a good weekend to post this. 100% of the proceeds from this really cool Boston Strong poster goes to the Martin W. Richards Charitable Foundation. Martin was the 8 year old little boy that was killed by the terrorists 2 years ago in Boston. His parents set up the Foundation to support peace through education and athletic initiatives. The poster features my friend Julie who was a ballet dancer and who will be running her second Boston marathon this year.

Good luck to all the Boston guys too.

Have not been in here as much...just plugging along running 3 days a week...my Saturday runs up to 7 miles for the first time in a while which feels good.

Though...skipped this morning...strep has been going around the house and I feel I have it now...woke up with the typical sore throat...but also very achy.

Misty ride today. Had to get it in early as I am moving this weekend (oh, does that suck).

Anyway - new PR on another common hill by 15 seconds or so (only a 3.5 minute climb). Reset a portion of my critical power curve from 3-3:30 minutes, holding 375 watts for that length. That's really stout for me. I was hoping to hold 360ish at the top end.

Picked up a TomTom on a whim today at the marathon expo, 20% off deal. Wife insisted so who was I to argue. So happy to be rid of the chest strap. Interface is a huge upgrade over the 405.

Ran the Boston 5k this morning. Great morning for running, wanted to break 24 minutes, but that was a little unrealistic, but i really did want to break an 8 minute pace and I did that. Finished 24:11. Could have done better if it weren't so congested at the start and then having to dog people who were walking a 1/2 mile in. Really hate how people who are walking after a 1/2 mile are in the 7 minute corral. Overall, a fun race though and doing the famous right onto Hereford, left onto Boston was motivating. Going over the marathon finish line with less than a mile to go really helped carry me. Maybe I'll have the chops next year for the marathon.

Good luck to everyone running in the big one on Monday!

Did 5 miles (mostly walking) and 1,000 yards in the pool.

Convinced my boys (well the youngest at least) to do a tri with me sometime this summer. Anybody ever done a family tri event? Not looking to do a relay but something that all ages can do together - preferably a sprint distance and not the ultra short ones.

Tried telling my wife the difference in how you feel after a 2 hour ride vs a 2 hour run. Failed as I didn't want to say cycling is like sex, you get the satisfied tired feeling. She's already jealous of Lolita (my bike's name)

My right foot is a little shorter than my left. Throughout my training I've felt like my right foot slides around in my shoe while my left feels just right. I get a hot spot in the ball of the right, my sock feels like it bunches up, and I find myself curling my toes on my right foot to compensate. I bought a fresh pair of size 11s last week and on my ten miler Saturday felt like my foot was coming out of it. It was all I could think about as I ran.

So I went out after my Saturday run and bought a pair of 10.5s and have run four times this week w/ a 10.5 on right and 11 on left. Kind of goofy but it feels great so I'm rolling with it. Used cash from my secret sock drawer gambling stash to fund it. No need to explain dropping 300 in two days on two pairs of shoes, two that I'll never use, to anyone but you nerds.
runningwarehouse.com or amazon usually have good deals. I like to wear 1 model year back so I can scoop up the deals when they're trying to make room for the newest models. You can get them as cheap as $65 on amazon if you're lucky.
Speaking of "models" here. Is the glide 5 the same shoe as the glide 6 (replace with whatever model you have) with different colors and/or different assembly etc? All the technical aspects the same? Not sure how to ask my question, but I got the shoes I did because I run closer to the outside of my foot and these shoes were best for that type of stride. Wondering if the next "model" of that shoe is also best for that stride or do I need to go to the shoe store each time I want shoes until I learn them all?
I've never worry about getting the newest model. If I have a model I like, I'll keep buying them on-line or at Sports Authority.
That's what I'm trying to do, but it doesn't appear to be in saucony's business model to keep them around for very long. That's why I asked if the newer models are essentially the same. When I do find the exact model I have, the newer models are still cheaper for some reason. I think I might be doing the internet wrong.
You should be wearing Hokas.
Yeah...been to the local store here twice, closed both times during a time they were suppose to be open. No idea which pair is the correct pair in the line.

Definitely get fitted - the first year or two they only had a couple of models and they were pretty similar. But they've dramatically expanded their line the past two years, so there are some that would feel foreign to me even though I've run in 3-4 other models almost exclusively for the past few years. I have three active in the rotation now - the Mafate Speed for short-medium runs and when the trail is muddy, the Stinson ATR for longer stuff, and the Conquest (last year's model) for roads and/or smooth trails and fire roads. I really want to try the Challenger, those look sweet and are super light, but I need to wear out one of my trail pairs (probably the Mafates) before I can justify buying another trail pair.

The bonus of the more cushioned shoes like Hoka is that I think they last longer - I don't usually retire mine until 600 miles or so.

Used my pent up stoke for you Boston guys to go out and get in a long one today, 20 miles with 3,500' of elevation gain. This knee issue has definitely impacted my training right during what should have been my peak 2-3 weeks of volume for my upcoming 100K, but I'm optimistic it will at least hold up and get me my States qualifier in 3 weeks.

Now to focus on gruecd, tri-man, pbm, and Nigel tomorrow! I hope you fellas all have great races, and can't wait to hear about them!

Goal today was to keep my heart rate below 140 for a long run for the first time. Ended up at 10.21 miles at a 139HR. Pace was terrible, but didn't care. Wanted to see if I could control my heart rate and just keep myself in that zone.

So a light week coming off the race - only 24.49 miles. But had a great tempo run this week and the nice relaxed long run today.

Really pumped about the Boston guys tomorrow. Kick some ###!

I'd was really cool to meet Gruecd and Tri-man today, it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone they are great guys.

On the race, the weather doesn't look good with 20+MPH wind from the E ESE direction. So things might not go exactly as planned tomorrow.

In case anyone wanted to track the Boston guys....

Text their bib numbers to 234567 and you'll get tracking via text

TriMan is 18044

Grue is 5382

Either Nigel or PBM is 29787

Am I missing anyone?

Ugh, the forecast looks like ####. Make the best of it, guys. :football:

Good luck, men!

What's the start times?
Funny, I was just looking that up...

Good luck to the Boston runners... definitely feel that twinge not running this year

I will be at Beacon / St Paul in Brookline cheering, hopefully the rain holds off!

Lei Day 5K

Returning as defending champion at this race believe it or not. My one and only race win. Obviously most people are aware of my situation and there was virtually no chance of a repeat but as always, I was going to give it my best.

Race is was a big family affair with my kids, wife and MIL all participating in one event or the other. There's a 1 mile run/walk race for the kids a 10:15 and then the 5k follows at 10:45. We get there early and I'm pretty relaxed, feeling like I have plenty of time for a warm up and all the socializing before hand. The one mile race starts and my wife, daughter and MIL start out and I'm trying to wait for them to get back before I had out for a warm up. My 7 year old finishes in 10 minutes (new PR woohoo!) and my wife and MIL are walking so it takes a while. Before I know it they are done and it's time to warm up.

For some odd reason in the confusion I think I have plenty of time for a warm up. I didn't. My plan was to jog a mile, stretch and then do some strides. I start running away from the start line and about a half mile out I check my watch...it's 10:42! IDIOT. So, no stretching, no strides and now no rest before hand. Luckily it was chip timed and I didn't have to be back right at 10:45. But at any rate my warm up turns into a panic as I rush back to start line getting my HR up to 188 bpm in the process! I finally get back to the beginning of the race and I'm stuck behind 550 people on a pretty narrow boardwalk.

I start about a minute after the gun and my starting heart rate was 164!

Mile 1 - I'm weaving in and out and just trying to find day light. 6:26 (192 BPM)

Mile 2 - I'm free of the walls of walkers but the pain is ever increasing. Sub 20 minutes isn't going to happen. I'm thinking about bailing and blaming it on the late start but I just can't quit. 6:35 (195 BPM)

Mile 3 - I'm praying for death but at least the late start allows me to track some people down. Mentally I'm looking for anything to help avoid thinking about my upchuck reflex. 6:46 - (198 BPM!!)

.1 - You know, the end of the race kick is quite an amazing thing. Here I am about to need the shock paddles to bring my heart down and I can still sprint in for a finish. .36 seconds 5:54 pace (200 BPM!!!)

Finished in 20:26

8/458 overall and 3/34 age group

Definitely pleased with the effort but obviously the pre-race tactics were pretty amauter hour. Who knows how many seconds that botched warm up cost me. I should be pleased with the overall results but I'm not. Until I'm 100% I'll always be running against my past self. I won't be happy until I can kick my own ###.

 you sound like me with the crappy timing. And you still brought home hardware!

I knew you were close to a 200max...

It really is amazing how oblivious I was of the time. The funny part is I didn't feel the normal pressure of a race. I slept well the night before. My stomach was fine to eat in the morning. And then I completely ruin all those good vibes with a sheer panic to get to the start line.

After finally getting back out and gutting my way through 4 miles Saturday sandwiched between strength training Friday and Sunday I intended to take today off so as to not stress my ankle too much, but...it's marathon day. This is like a runner's holy day.

*run scheduled*

Loved the report Hang10. I can relate to so much of that - many times thinking you have plenty of time and then PANIC. Also, very thankful that I don't own a HR monitor - ignorance is bliss.

Congrats on finishing top 10 given everything you've gone through!

Thanks. Yeah, wearing a HR monitor for racing is new for me. So really I don't have much data to compare it to from the past. I'm sure I've had similar HR results before though. One thing is for sure, I know better than to check those numbers during a race. Glad I didn't see a 195 average!

Why is the commentator giving all measurements using the metric system? I can handle kilometers but celsius? Really?
