Ran a 10k - Official Thread (12 Viewers)

pmb hung on for a BQ. Got a second wind late. Well done

Finish Net 01:11:36PM 03:07:23 10:17 07:33 7.96
 I think his old PR was a 3:08! Congrats to pmb!
Thanks guys, the conditions for the 1st half were better than expected. Things got hard very quickly in the 2nd, the wind and heavy wet shoes made the last few very difficult.
Well done, congrats! I know many people who run and a lot say that it is really two races, the first 18 and the last 8. Couldn't imagine running up heartbreak hill with driving wind and rain in my face. It's pretty nasty out there, great time, especially with the conditions.

LOL, just noticed another local guy I've run some trails with finished up a little ahead of Grue, small world with a 30k race.

Nice job guys, pbm awesome race! Noticed everyone had the monkey jump on their backs int he second half, saw the weather deteriorated some, how stiff was the wind? Thought Ned said something about 15mph?

pbm - congrats on PRing in those conditions!! STUDLY

Grue - you're plain old sick, man. Falling out of bed and running and 3:20. :tebow:

Tri - AND YOU TOO! How you guys pull this #### off with little to no training just blows me away.

"Well that might be the most brutal conditions I've run in. If you ran Boston today it took 20 miles of hope, 6 miles of heart, and 385 yards of bad ###. Congrats to all that crossed the finish today. You earned it."

Hey, nice thread you guys have here. I like what you've done with the place.

This is my favorite day of the year on FBG. Congrats to Grue, Tri-Man, Nigel and any other folks who ran Boston today that I don't know.

Yep. Congrats to all! - sounds like not great conditions. Hopefully that didn't take any of the fun out of it.

Grue, Tri, Nigel, PBM, you guys are beasts. Congrats and enjoy it.

One of my local friends ran a 3:51, which is pretty slow for her. I am looking for the guy who cuts my parents' lawn. He was hoping for around a 3:00 but I can't find his time.

Edit: Found Him. 3:02.

BOSTON (CBS) — Meb Keflezighi couldn’t defend his Boston Marathon title this year, but he still managed to run a race that was memorable and nauseating.

The eighth-place finisher told WBZ-TV he vomited during the race – five times.

“I stopped five times during the race after mile 23,” Keflezighi said. “I threw up.”

“You threw up during the race?” WBZ-TV sports anchor Steve Burton asked.

“Five times, oh yeah,” Keflezighi said.

Today is the PERFECT day for a 5k race report, ORDER UP!

So this is the wrong day to talk about the 5K I ran over the weekend!
No way, let's hear the details!
My goal for this 5K was to finish in sub-25:00. My PR is 24:10, but I am running my first HM in two weeks so my goal was to come out of this run with a reasonable time and no injury.

There are plenty of people who walk this race, as it is a fund-raiser for cancer research so probably 25-30% are walkers.

Mile 1: 7:30

Mile 2: 8:09 (2nd mile includes a long, steady incline for most of the mile)

Mile 3: 7:50

Final .1: :53 (though my watch said the race distance was actually 3.14)

Official time: 24:22, finished 103/1,412 and 8/42 age group

My 1-year-old decided that the morning of the 5K would be a good time to wake up and not go back to bed, so I got up at 4:30 and never went back to sleep. Otherwise, everything else was great. The weather was a beautiful 55 degrees with almost no wind. I felt good throughout, though the long, steady hill kicked my butt a bit and I didn't push hard enough in the 3rd mile. I kept thinking, "this doesn't suck enough," but I didn't really push it like I could have.

My father-in-law walked in the event, so I went back on the course and walked the final half mile back in with him. There were several cancer survivors at the race, which was cool, and I ran the race in honor of my father, who died more than 20 years ago from cancer. So while I didn't PR, I had a great time and will run this every year that I can.

That's awesome. The broadcast did mention once that he had stopped and bent over, but they said it looked like he grabbed his hammstring or something. Once he dropped off the lead pack they didn't mention him again until he finished - grabbing the hand of the woman crossing the line at the same time, who smiled with surprise.

I was rooting for MUT runner Sage Canaday who was going for his Olympic qaullifier of 2:18, but he missed it by a 1:12. First super-hot at LA and now windy at Boston, he's having bad weather luck in trying to qualify.

Mike Wardian (2:27:20) and Alex Varner (2:28:14) both turned around two weeks after Lake Sonoma 50 with solid times, unbelievable how quickly these guys can recover.

Ueah...that is all i remember them saying about him...that he stopped for a few seconds.

Also like how he finished with that woman who got a nice surprise to finish with Meb.

Congrats to the other bromingos who ran...Tri, Gru & pbm, unbelievable!

Thrilled with my time, was really dreading the weather and it's potential to screw my chances to go sub-4 but in the end wind was not a factor first half. Picked up after 16 through the hills and all the way home but was expecting worse overall.

First mile was 9:32. Half mile in I decided to duck into the woods to piss. Was not an emergency but knew if I didn't do it then it was gonna happen I the first few miles. Wanted to get it over with before I got in a groove, was my only whizz stop.

After that first slow one I picked it up for the next few, and soon had my average overall pace down to 8:45 where it stayed almost me 16. As an aside, love the TomTom and it's big display of average pace, if you choose. It's the only number I looked at the entire run.

I wanted to get through the Newton Hills at or below 9:00 pace, and then try to hold it coming in. I think I was at 8:48 when I hit the firehouse to start the hills at 17.5 and at 8:58 when I crested Heartbreak/mile 21. Some slow miles in there but grinded through them, did not stop. Knew then that sub 4 was in the bag barring catastrophe. Felt ok through 23 but last three were rough. Hips and quads were smoked. My watch said 9:00 pace overall when I finished but also had me at 26.42mi so official pace a bit slower.

Crossed the finish line and worked my way over to the Boson Sports Club in Copley where my team was able to gather post race. The hour between finishing and showering was the worst I've ever felt in my life. Shivering uncontrollably, legs cramping, disoriented, nauseous, wasn't really making sense when I tried to talk. I was a mess. Got a legit 30 min massage by a pro, hot shower and some food and I felt human again. Was a huge plus to have that set up for us as part of the charity team.

A few others quick notes:

Crowds were of course much thinner than usual given the weather, even at the notorious Wellesley and BC spots. completely understandable, god knows when I was at BC I'd have been in my dorm making love to a cheerleader on a day like this. Those out there were loud and awesome though. Would love to do it again someday in good weather. That said I had great support along the course. My wife and kids met me at 9 then again at 16 and finish. That was some serious hustle. Had other folks scattered throughout as well.

I'll tell people I ran it in 3:57, nobody needs to know I milked 59 seconds out of that last minute. We round down! Also thankful I got in when I did, a near miss under 4 would have had me tempted to train for another one in the fall and I'm really not up for that. Will relax and enjoy some unstructured running for a bit.

I was on the hook to raise at least $5k for the pediatric cancer charity at MGH that I was running for. I set a goal though of $10k and am currently $200 short. No doubt I'll get a few more contributions this week though so really pumped about that too.

That's the quick and dirty report, may add a bit more detail about pacing and such later but I'm working tomorrow and off to St Thomas for a week on Wed w the family so wanted to knock This out.

Thanks for the support guys!

Congrats on the happy ending!!!

was feeling pretty proud of my two runs through manhattan this weekend until I opened this thread.

Forgot today was boston. Nice work fellas. Heard it was pretty crappy weather and you guys still killed it.

Nigel, nice work... Throwing any kisses around in Wellesley? Did you have a heart rate monitor on? Use it or ignore it, if so?

Hey guys! Thanks for following yesterday. I was thinking about you while out on the course.

Great to meet pbm and to see gruecd again. And a PR for pbm on a day like yesterday? Dang! Good to see our whole 'team' represented well. I'll write up my race details when I get home, but let me at least share my favorite race sign (from Wellesley, no surprise) that I saw:

"Kiss me! You can cross MY finish line!"

Hey guys! Definitely thought of you guys when I was out there, too!

I'll write up more details later too, but despite yesterday being nowhere near my fastest marathon, it was definitely one of my best. I felt good the whole way, cruised up the hills, and negative split by 25 secs. Passed a ton of people in the last 10K.

Congrats to pbm on the PR and to tri and Nigel for great races!

Looking forward to getting back to training and to seeing what I can do after a few more months...
