Bar tape unraveling isn't good. Max I've touched is 56mph or so. A number I don't share with my wife. I don't mind going fast but weigh a number of factors on how much to dial it back. Rule #1 - rubber side down. Actually, the worst descent I've ever done was last year in Springville (bit NE of Birmngham) - dead straight but steep and with 25mph gusts from the side. So sometimes curves aren't the scary part.

keep in mind, I've lived in flat areas most of my biking life.

Terrible. I'm not sure what messing with runners has to do with protesting against the police.

Over toward Gurley you have some significant hills. Can easily hit 50 on some of those. Heck on Blowing Cave you could hit 50 in a few hundred yards. I've never had my hands hurt so bad coming down a hill as that one - at negative 30% any letup and you were basically shot out of a cannon. Straight downhill.

Rashad Turner with the St. Paul chapter of Black Lives Matter said, “Our job as an organization is to keep the pressure on. Our job is to let the community know that every day we are planning on dismantling white supremacy.”

Turner said the goal of Sunday’s planned protest is not to have runners afraid or intimidated. But rather, it’s to unite.

“My hope is the marathon runners realized they’re not going to be able to finish this race and instead of being angry and complaining, that they join in in the protest and stand in solidarity because justice is all we are asking for,” Turner said. “I’m not concerned about them feeling threatened. We’ve always been non-violent, we’ve been peaceful. Hypothetically we’d be more afraid of a car running through the crowd like they have in the past than we would a marathon runner reacting with violence.”
So ####### stupid.

Beyond ####### stupid. :hot: Ivan, be careful GB. It scares me to think what this might be like at a place like the Philly Marathon.

2nd weekend of Louisville taper for me. Saturday was a 4:30 ride, Sunday a 1:15 ride/2:15 run. Looking forward to racing on October 11 - I've not toed a start line this year and am tired of training.

Wow, the Baltimore Marathon is Oct. 17. Freddie Gray police trials are supposed to start Oct. 13 (though there is talk they will be moved back). That could make for a real interesting day (including for my son, who's running the Half Marathon that day)

If I get delayed at the end, I'll live. I'm just going to set my running OCD aside and treat my garmin time as my result regardless of what my chip time says. I have a sense of humor about the situation, and obviously I have no interest in getting into a dust-up after logging 25+ miles. If I was going for a BQ, this would be infuriating. In my case though, I'm the only person who cares about my time.

Worst case scenario is that I come back with a story.

If it was me, I'd be a little upset that all my training went to waste but then I'd just join in the protest and stand in solidarity because they are just trying to get justice after all.

alsonotreally

I can't believe the city would allow the race to be interrupted. Besides the fact that it's completely wrong, blocking the race would certainly result in violence.

Yeah, there's no way this doesnt get at least a little violent if they actually block the course. People who are normally nice and laid back, like me, tend to get angry easy after they've been running for a while. And there are going to be hundreds of folks coming in around the same general timeframe. Somebody will throw an elbow or run somebody over. I'm just preparing myself not to be That Guy.

After Boston I'm not sure how these folks don't get arrested for terroristic threats. Security at these events has gotten a lot more paranoid.

Here we are, September 29th & the SI was 150 at 5AM. Where the #### is Fall and when is it getting here?
Really bad here too. Tropical systems in the gulf have been keeping humidity ridiculously high.

I really need to add some faster running to my training but the weather is not cooperating. Maybe it will keep me healthy this year.

I'm officially on the schedule for an ablation on 11/4. One night in the hospital then a week of no running to let the catheter wounds in my legs heal. Perfect timing, a week after my half and before I really start Boston training. I'll have to stay on the beta blocker for a couple of months after the procedure while the heart tissue heals but hopefully (doc says 80% chance) I'll be afib and drug free after that. Can't wait to see what kind of difference it makes.

That's awesome. Glad you're finally getting it done.

Yeah, I guess that is the sliver lining to running slow. Build up that strong healthy base.

Stupidly early forecast for the Chicago Marathon is a morning high of 62/low of 45. Might be windy though. Can't complain about that, I guess.

:censored: those guys. I'd love to see them try to stop me from crossing a finish line... :boxing: :football:

The more I thought about this, I bet its all a bluff. The story about them planning to do it is all they needed to drum up their awareness.
It's not a bluff. They're not that smart. They want to attack "white privilege" because it's not fair how only white people have the time and money to train for a marathon.

I think I'm going to work to run the Ann Arbor Half in April. The one giant caveat is that I absolutely hate running in the bitter cold so I'm not sure about my ability to get out for long runs in January and February. But, if all goes well, I'll see if I can't get under two hours in my first half in ten years.

If you want a PR course and want to wait just 2 more weeks, take a look at The Martian Invasion of Races: http://www.martianmarathon.com/index.php/events/marathon-half-marathon

need an opinion.

I have a group of lawyers in their late 20s - early 30s who I lead, and I'm organizing a run for Thursday's session.

The first quarter mile of the nearby hill is ~135' in elevation. I did it 5 times this morning after we did weights (after 4 sets of squats it wasn't easy).

My plan is to make us do the hill 10 times which will be 5 miles and 1350' (equal to the World Trade Center).

Is that too much for moderate runners? This crew averages 8:30 minute miles when pushing on flat land.

That sounds like hell. I would never force anyone to do something so extreme. Oh wait, you said they were lawyers? Yes, definitely pick a hot day to do that workout.
