Ran a 10k - Official Thread (2 Viewers)

Sooooo.........been having some GI issues the last week or so. Tried to run Wednesday - had to abort once to head back to the house, but finished off a 3 mile run. Doctor visit yesterday, which leads me to a colonoscopy in a few weeks.

Feel like crap, but gonna try and squeeze out a run tonight to see how it goes. Not real optimistic.  So if I disappear off of strava for awhile don't be alarmed. If you see a run on there every few days, it should be good.

Kind of worried about this one to be honest.
To follow up on this, had a pretty rough weekend internally. Ended up going to the ER yesterday and spent the day there getting some blood work done and a CT scan.

Turns out I have some inflammation that right now can be treated by two antibiotics. So I still have to follow up with the GI doctor in a few weeks, but it is possible that what is going on could be caused by a simple virus/infection. So that is good news for sure. And the blood work and CT scan came out well - nothing glaring.

The main downside is that I cannot drink alcohol with one of the antibiotics, so no beer over the Thanksgiving weekend.  :(

But, the upside is that I should be able to start running regularly again, hopefully without frequent rest stops. So I have that going for me, which is nice.

that's goodish news

feels like we're all at the age where GI issues are too often a terrible red flag for some terrible stuff. glad it's just the horrible no-beer for the weekend variety.

if none of the regulars are- I'd be interested... need a new pair in case I can get my ### out the door again. and the size is right (if they fit true- I'm a 10.5-11 depending on fit)
Ok they're yours, but you better get out there and ####### use them! Pm your address will try to send them next week.

Anyone interested in a pair of size 10.5 Hoka Ones? I only ran in them twice, won't be using them again whether I start running again or not. No charge, just looking to clear some space.
Was going to say :hey: but glad to see el floppo wants them.   Better put some miles on those beasts.

Is there any reason to not sign up for a free 50k (trail but nothing bad, I did it last year) 3 weeks after a road marathon?

Use of to wear Asics, but I've been told Hokas are solid.  I switched to Brooks and will never go back to Asics.  Every shoe is different and you have to find what works for you.  Took me 2 years.

5K Turkey Trot for me today.  This was my first race since I ran a 10K in June.  I originally planned to run more races this fall but training was hard with the hot and humid summer we had and I never felt like I was at a good racing fitness level.  Anyway, my mom wanted to run the Turkey Trot this year so I agreed to run it too.  Otherwise, I wouldn't have.

Last Saturday I decided to run on the treadmill so I wouldn't have to deal with 25 mph + winds and realized that I couldn't remember running a 6:00 mile in many months.  I realized that I didn't have a good idea of what kind of pace I could handle for this 5K.  I decided to crank up the treadmill to 6:00 pace for a mile near the end.  It didn't feel THAT bad although I've noticed over the years that I'm a better treadmill runner than outside runner.  Anyway, after that experience I felt that 6:00 pace would be a good goal.

Weather was good this morning.  Upper 30s with a little wind but nothing too strong.

Mile splits (Garmin data):

5:59/149, 6:01/163, 5:57/168, last .14 miles (on Garmin) 5:28 pace/171

Finished in 18:37.  66 out of 6,950 overall.  2 out of 308 in AG.  Missed first by one second.  Award was an embroidered winter hat.

My mom (69 years old) finished in 31:18.  4th out of 59 in her AG.  She was disappointed that she didn't place for the first time in her 5 5Ks she's ran.  There were new batch of up and coming 65 year-olds that bested her.  Oh well, at least she won't need to worry about them next year.

Overall, I'm happy with the race considering my training.  Heart rate data shows I probably could have done better although it certainly felt hard.  It's always tough for me to run paces that I'm not recently familiar with.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

Nice race, Jux!

My strava feed is blowing up with turkey trots and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous. But the good news on my front is that I have found another activity that doesn't irritate my tendinitis. Doing some work on the treadmill with some serious incline. I'm working pretty good but without the pounding. I start out with 13% and 3.6 mph and then change it up every mile or 10 minutes or so. Occasionally I'll throw in a mile @ 5% and 7 mph. End of the workout I've gone around 3.5 - 5 miles and 2000 ft of gain. So far so good.

Ran a Turkey Trot in Massachusetts today.  Woke up this morning and saw there wasn't rain in the air, so i got up and got dressed and headed out.  Wasn't sure how it would go as I had only run twice (9 total miles) since my marathon 2.5 weeks ago.

30 minute drive to a race I had no idea of size or race course.  Signed up and got my bib #1658.  It was an hour before race time and I asked how many runners did they expect.  She said 1500 or so.  I was surprised as it had a small race feel.

Temp was about 30 with a bit of a breeze.   DId a warm up for 1.5 miles and then stripped down to shorts, long sleeve tech shirt, hat and gloves.  Slipped into the third row for the start.

Mile 1 -- 6:19

Mile 2 -- 6:30

Mile 3 -- 6:26

Last 0.05* -- 4:43/mile pace

Thrilled to report I PRed by over a minute (old PR was 20:36).  Ran a 19:26 which was good enough for 26 out of 1483 overall.   My age group was an insane 30-49 (WTF) and I finished 7 out of 267 (not bad for a 45 year old.)

* Full disclosure -- My watch only had me running 3.05 miles.   I feel a bit guilty taking a PR with being 0.05 short.  Am I cheating the system?  I guess my rationale is if the watch said 3.15, I wouldn't "shave off" time to reflect what it was for 3.1.    There was a heavily wooded section that may have lost signal (?).  Others thoughts?

It's a legit PR*.

Had a lot of fun morning in the Tampa Turkey Trot 5k.  About 3,000 folks running.  Great start to a great day.  Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Completed my first Turkey Trot. I was excited to come in here and post the results until I seen the times posted. I PR'ed it by about a minute. 22.48 was my final time. 7.21 pace per mile. 600 people, I finished 46th overall and 10th for my age group. 1st overall was a high school kid at 18 flat. This thread inspires me a bit to get out and run. It's nice to have a place to come back in and brag about your small accomplishments. Great runs and Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Do I need to post again the link to how inaccurate GPS watches really are?  Hell I've run the same race multiple years, same course, and seen a 1/2 mile difference.  Those are 31 mile races of course, but you can do the math on the accuracy of these things.  You're good, congrats on the PR!

Congrats to everyone on the races today!  After getting hurt at my first 10K last year on Thanksgiving, an achilles issue that lasted into the Spring, I decided to sit this one out.  I've got a 100K at the end of April to start training for, and would like to enter this training block healthy - and unfortunately fat, but that's easier to fix than an angry tendon.  Looking forward to a nice, mellow trail run in the morning.

It can be overwhelming when you see others run faster.  Don't let it.  We are all trying to improve, whether its 5 min/mile or 14 min/mile.  Remember, regardless of how fast any of us are....there is always someone faster.   I sometimes will find someone in this thread who is faster and follow their training techniques and work harder to try to "catch" them.

Congrats on killing your PR by a minute.  That's AWESOME!  Congrats.

If theres a fit Issue, theyre all yours.

Happy thanksgiving all! I also just did my annual turkey trot to the can this morning. Pretty sure I PRed the crap out It

I swear Tampa has a hex on me. Every year I come down here something happens.

Ive dealt with a sore Achilles off and on all cycle. So of course now that I'm a week out from the marathon it decides to get really sore and is now swelling on my heel. I'm getting pretty pissed off.

Tampa's easy to blame, but you'll get through it. I know how frustrating it must be for you.

Ugh...I feel your pain literally. Hopefully the extra rest treats you right and you bounce back fast.

Is that where your ankle was bothering you?

I bought some KT tape to get play with.
I've actually been dealing with the double whammy of posterior tib and achilles tendinitis. No doubt they are related. I tried some KT tape for my marathon attempt. Not sure how much it helped but as I said before, I could have kept pushing if was only my ankle.

If I were you I would definitely experiment with taping and maybe a brace. Would be smart to get that dialed in this week.

lots of weaving, dodging, hopping up and back off the curb.. just trying to find a clear path to run on for about the first half mile yesterday.

lots & lots of people walking.

there are two routes. one 2 mile route for walkers and one 5 mile route that goes the opposite direction which is ostensibly for runners only. doesn't ever work out that way.

didn't plug in the Garmin to see what my first time split was but it felt awfully slow. my guesstimate is about 1 minute slower than any of the other 4 i ran. end pace said 9:03/mi. that's pretty good for me. was shooting for something under 9 so...... didn't quite get there.

Try to stay positive.  Rest the heck out of that achilles.   If need be, only run once or twice the rest of the way.  You have rocked this cycle, so you just need to get as healthy as you can.  In several of my marathons, I was in taper and dealing with minor injuries.  I rested the entire last week of taper (with exception of one short 2 mile run to stretch out the legs).  It worked and the minor injuries didn't flare up during the race.

I am confident that if you take care of yourself and not worry about losing fitness and focus on getting healthy, you will have a successful race.

my headlamp has mostly burned out :(   3 good seasons of running in the dark with it. only the red blinking light still functions. the 3 other settings went kaput.

Man, lots of activity in here.

Congrats to:

@Osaurus. Keep on getting out there!

@JShare87. Awesome job on the pr. That is one heck of a fast time.

@Steel Curtain. And another pr. Nice work coming off that marathon.

@Juxtatarot. Nothing unusual to see here folks. Just another fast run from a guy who trains like a beast and is so dang consistent. Nice job to you and your mom.

And juxt, was just talking about Kenosha today. Gonna see how the next few weeks go with my health and make sure I am good there, and then ramp up the first three weeks or so in December to see if mentally I am ready to take that on. My HR combos and pace have been pretty good lately for the few times I have run, so it is encouraging. Also have a potential job change coming up that could really change things mentally on that front, so keeping my fingers crossed there. So we shall see.

Work that calf with a roller (stick) or lacrosse ball or something.  Make sure there aren't any knots in there adding extra tension to that achilles.  And I've had pretty good success with KT tape for achilles.

Just got back from my first headlamp trail run of the season.  I almost forgot how much fun it is to be out on a singletrack trail with just that circle of light leading the way.  Although coming upon a family of 5 deer scared the #### out of me - just 10 glowing eyes staring back at me, then darting off down the hill.

I don't run. But we did just have a Turkey Trot here. The Trot ran right by the restaurant, which was nice. Except for the part about them closing down my street when I really needed to get in and get some work done Thursday morning. They also needed my water. Of course, I keep the spigot locked. They ended up getting the water, but barely in time, as I made them wait while I walked back and forth several times from the restaurant to where I had to park my van with the road closed to unload a bunch of crap.

It was a fairly minor annoyance (good thing we were closed) and they were great folks. We're not on the main road, so a few hundred (or thousand, I didn't really pay attention to the race) people running by us was some nice exposure.

Resting the past 2 days is helping the ankle, but I'm still annoyed.  I just finished volunteering at a tournament at our soccer club.  Just standing around for 2hrs irritated it around the outter edge of my ankle and the heel.  Been doing ice bucket, yoga, and ibuprofen to keep the swelling at bay.  Really strange that it never swelled or got this irritated until this past week. :hot:

On the plus side - I'm sleeping a ton.

REST!  Just keep doing it.  It will get better.  I feel very confident.

Not me. Three marathons in a row (spring, fall, then spring again) would be too much for me. I hope you get in.  It's a great marathon. Perhaps I'm biased but I prefer it to Boston. Pancake flat. Great crowd support. Also, if your family comes, it's easy for them to see you multiple times since it weaves and loops.
Agree.  But for me, it will be fall....then another fall....then spring.

I'm trying to hit the big marathons I haven't done.  I really enjoy the big marathon experience.  If Chicago doesn't work, then I'll eye Marine Corps.

I'll go with you to Marines Corps. That's been a bucket lister for me.

I think you should put in for Chicago.   I have a cheap (relatively speaking) hotel room reservation for you and the wife if you want it.   I think its $180/night and its walking distance to start.

If you don't get in the lottery, then you can we can do Marine Corps.   Or you wait and see if I get in to Chicago and we figure it out from there.

Chicago runners could also stay at my place, in the near western suburbs (Oak Park  ...last stop on the Green Line el train)) and get a tri-man dropoff (20 minute drive) or, worst case, stay at one of the Oak Park hotels and take the el into the city (25 minutes on the el) or let me drop you off.

No excuses @Ned!!!!  ;-)

The taper wins. Again.

Whats up guys, I swear this thread used to be where amateur runners used to dwell.  Now its turned into a bunch of elites pounding the pavement on a daily basis.

I know some of yall use Strava...is Strava Premium worth it?  I tried it a few years back and didn't think the upgrade was worth it.  Now it looks like they have personalized coaching and live feedback.  I don't remember those features last time I was on there.  Is that a good feature?  I'm getting back into running (after all but quitting for the better part of 4 years) and need some direction.  Seems like a good option.

I know its cheap, but so am I

Thanks!

I never saw those features, so I can't really say.... I didn't think the other stuff was worth it so I cancelled it a while back.  Did you join the FFA group on Strava?

Welcome back!

Since I am actually able to run again (eight miles yesterday!), I have been motivated to figure out my username and password on Strava.  I lost it when I upgraded to Windows ten a few months back and was not motivated to get back on until now.  Thanks for all the kudos I have been receiving all these weeks!!

I am signed up for the Houston marathon, which was a pipe dream of course, but I am thinking I may try to run the half.  I have until the end of December to switch races.  I think SteveC is running the full.  We should finish about the same time!

I have never run a half that took over two hours to complete.  This will be a first (if I stay healthy enough to make it).

Speaking of Strava, we need an update on who is who over there. I see there's some new blood that have joined TeamFFA who I assume are FBG's. Also, we need to clean the group up and clear out the guys or gals that are definitely not FBG's. LIke that spanish dude who is crushing everyone on the leaderboard each week.
